In this episode, we take a close look at the growing complexity of legislation in the age of artificial intelligence and how longer, denser bills create new incentives for politicians to hide provisions that voters would never spot on their own. We also examine the Trump administration's new visa rules, including the unexpected decision to classify obesity as grounds for denial, and what this says about public policy and shifting cultural norms. We analyze Trump's proposal for $2,000 tariff-funded checks and the Supreme Court case that could unravel the entire tariff structure, followed by a deeper dive into the real economics of trade, revenue, and political incentives. We finish with a look at the housing market, the push for 50-year mortgages, and why extending loan terms does little to address the underlying supply constraints driving home prices and unaffordability. 00:00 Introduction and Overview 00:28 The Future of Legislation in the Age of AI 08:07 No Visas for Obese People 12:12 Foolishness of the Week: $2,000 Checks for All Americans 19:40 Trump's Political Gambit 22:35 Budget Deficits and the Myth of Tariff Revenue 28:13 The Housing Affordability Crisis 31:16 Mortgage Rates, Down Payments, and Lending Standards 35:56 The 50-Year Mortgage Proposal and Its Real Costs 45:08 30-Year vs 50-Year Mortgage Interest Rates 51:51 Are Tiny Homes the Solution? 53:50 How Politicians Could Implement 50-Year Mortgages 56:17 The Role of Banks in the Lending Business 57:18 What Mortgages and Loans Allow 01:03:20 Predictions for 50-Year Mortgages 01:07:01 Is Inflation Falling? 01:09:19 Conclusions on Mortgages and Lending 01:13:06 James's Personal Mortgage Story 01:15:41 The Problems with Higher Education and Student Loans Learn more about your ad choices. Mark Carney's Liberals pledged "generational investments" in the budget they unveiled Tuesday as Canada navigates a tariff-hit economic crisis, with $141 billion in new spending offset by about $51 billion in cuts and other savings. It includes a commitment of $13 billion towards housing and new builds over five years. Alina McKay, research manager at UBC Housing Collaborative, and Jill Atkey, CEO of the B.C. Non-Profit Housing Association, join the show to discuss what needs to be prioritized in the housing crisis. The budget also pledges $51 billion towards the Build Communities Strong Fund over the next decade. The Filipino community in B.C. has been working to build a community centre for years. B.C. NDP MLA Mable Elmore joins the show to discuss how government funding can play into the community's goals.

$25 trillion! This is the sum injected into the economy by Governments and Central Banks to protect a significant portion of the global economy during the Covid crisis. Where does this funding come from, and what are the impacts of such government spending? Is this strategy sustainable in the long term? These are important questions to consider, particularly since we are in a year where half of the world's population is heading to the polls and many candidates are advocating for a 'whatever it takes' approach.Even if we are near full employment, witnessing rising wages, have defeated the Coronavirus, and have inflation levels gradually approaching central bank objectives, let us not overlook the consequences of this approach. The massive government spending to save lives, known as 'whatever it takes,' is not without costs. As the saying goes, there‘s no such thing as a free lunch! The result? Endemic sovereign debt and budget deficits – a metaphorical portrayal of 'original sin.'In this episode of 2050 Investors, Kokou Agbo-Bloua will delve into sovereign debt sustainability and explore how governments can balance their finances amid high-interest rates while meeting the demands of voters. Joining the discussion is Anatoli Annenkov, Societe Generale's Senior Economist for Europe, who will analyse the relationship between public debt and central banks. He will explain how central banks can help stabilize sovereign debt crises and shed light on the importance of their independence.CreditsPresenter & Writer: Kokou Agbo-Bloua. • Guest Name: Veronique de Rugy • Affiliation: Mercatus Center • Summary: Veronique de Rugy strongly critiques the proposal for a US sovereign wealth fund, arguing it's a poor idea given the US's high debt-to-GDP ratio and existing budget deficits. She contends that borrowing to invest would be fiscally unsound and would lead to "cronyism on steroids," as government investment decisions are driven by political priorities rather than viable market opportunities, unlike private sector investments. 1910 JUNEAU ALASKA
The new Wisconsin state budget has now been in effect for almost 2 months, and the MacIver institute just released its in-depth report about it. This is the 9th state budget that we've reviewed, and in many ways, it the worst one we've ever seen. We'll be talking about this for a while, so I just highlight one thing for you today. In last budget, the state promised to give local governments a 20% cut of its sales tax revenue. But the state has yet to make room for that transfer in its budget. So instead, it's paying the locals out of the general fund surplus - about $1.6 billion a year. You probably remember a lot of people talking about a $4.4 billion surplus earlier this year – well that's where it's going. And because of it, we're expected to end this biennium with just $714 million in the account. That's definitely not enough to keep paying the locals $1.6 billion a year. That means we'll be going into the next budget cycle with another multi-billion structural deficit, but one that the state won't be able to cover up simply by dipping into its savings. We'll have a lot more to say about the budget in the coming weeks, and what the state could do to get us out of this mess.

AP correspondent Ben Thomas reports the nation's budget deficit rose again last month despite record tariff income. ((opens with actuality))
The financial world is plagued by misconceptions about the budget deficit, with both political parties incentivized to make our fiscal situation appear worse than reality. Diving into the actual numbers reveals a fundamentally different picture than what dominates headlines.Examining Congressional Budget Office projections shows they completely omit approximately $300 billion in annual tariff revenue. When properly accounted for, next year's projected deficit falls to roughly $1.4 trillion or 4.5% of GDP—a level that becomes sustainable when compared to our nominal economic growth rate. The relationship between debt sustainability, economic growth, and monetary policy creates a more nuanced story than the oversimplified crisis narratives that dominate public discourse. The Federal Reserve's current policy has resulted in an extraordinary 9% annual contraction of the money supply, a condition not seen since the Great Depression. This monetary tightening creates deflationary pressures that will eventually force rate cuts—likely beginning in September. Understanding these dynamics provides crucial context for investment decisions across asset classes. For equity markets, our analysis maintains a year-end S&P target of 6,600 despite near-term challenges. The market appears fully valued with earnings expectations running high, particularly for technology companies, creating potential volatility through August and September. Small-cap stocks, despite recent underperformance, stand to benefit significantly from upcoming Fed rate cuts, particularly those with strong balance sheets and meaningful dividends. The most profound insights often come from following the money supply data that mainstream financial media consistently overlooks. Whether you're positioning for potential market turbulence or seeking income through high-yield bonds yielding around 8%, having a clear-eyed view of these economic fundamentals provides an edge in navigating what promises to be an eventful conclusion to 2024.Whether you're heading out for a weekend getaway or embarking on a global adventure, LEVEL8's sleek, durable luggage is designed to keep up.Visit www.level8cases.com and use code LEVEL8LAG10 to get 10% off your next purchase.Discount Code: LEVEL8LAG10– Offers 10% off on all products– No expiry, unlimited usage– Not stackable with other discounts Sign up to The Lead-Lag Report on Substack and get 30% off the annual subscription today by visiting http://theleadlag.report/leadlaglive. It's time for our daily chat with KCBS Insider Phil Matier, hosted by KCBS Radio news anchor Steve Scott. Governor Gavin Newsom says President Trump and his administration's policies are to blame for a good chunk of the 12 billion dollar shortfall in the state budget. The governor unveiled his May revise today, calling for cutbacks to health insurance for undocumented migrants.
Governor Gavin Newsom has attributed California’s $12 billion budget deficit to what he calls the “Trump Slump,” citing former President Donald Trump’s tariff policies, volatile markets, and reduced tourism as key causes. In his revised $332 billion budget, Newsom warned that Trump-era economic uncertainty could cost the state up to $16 billion in revenue. “California is under assault,” he said, defending cuts to health programs and climate initiatives. Critics, including Republican lawmakers, dismissed the blame as political deflection, accusing Newsom of reckless spending and mismanagement. Beyond the Tariff Turnaround: Consequences Take Shape What did foreign countries learn from Trump's capitulation to the bond market? How will they use it? How will the 10% that remains for everything affect the American economy? Congress Blows the Lid Off the Deficit — $5 TRILLION Debt Ceiling HikeThe Trade Deficit talk has conveniently redirected attention away from the federal Budget Deficit as interest on the debt passes $1 TRILLION for the first time (along with “defense” spending). In this episode of the Must Read Alaska Show, host Ben Carpenter—former legislator and combat veteran—moderates a deep dive into Alaska's long-standing fiscal challenges with guests Senator Mike Shower and Representative Kevin McCabe. The conversation revolves around the state's structural budget deficit, the volatility of oil revenues, and the erosion of the original intent behind the Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD). Together, the lawmakers explore the urgent need for a comprehensive fiscal plan, including spending caps, government downsizing, and potential tax reforms. They caution against continued reliance on federal funds and the Permanent Fund, warning that a government unaccountable to its citizens threatens individual liberty. The episode is a candid, sometimes sobering, discussion on the lack of political will and leadership, the influence of public sector unions, and the uphill battle to re-engage Alaskans in the governance of their state.
