Noami Grevemberg is a leader in the world of vanlife, and the founder of Diversify Vanlife, a platform that highlights less-heard voices in vanlife, road travel, and nomadic communities. It's also a resource that helps break down barriers to accessing life on the road, a lifestyle that Noami and her husband Dustin embarked on in 2016.We chatted with Noami towards the end of 2022, when she was coming off a much-needed vacation after finishing her first book, Living the Vanlife: On the Road Toward Sustainability, Community, and Joy. It's part memoir, part how-to guide, in which Noami shares the nitty gritty of their travels with candor, grace, and humor. The start of the book tells the story of how Noami immigrated to the US from Trinidad at just 16, and how she built a life for herself all on her own - from entering college at 25, to climbing the corporate ladder as an environmental scientist. All that hustle took its toll, and by her early 30's Noami was ready for a change. While she wouldn't have envisioned vanlife for herself when she flew to America as a teenager, it's a life she was able to choose for herself. And it's one that she wants others to be able to pursue too. This conversation with Noami is the perfect way to start a new year as we talk about resparking creativity after coming off a big project, realigning yourself with your values, what it took for her to create this book, and what aspiring vanlifers will gain from reading it when it's available this summer.Enjoy listening? Leyla Alyanak is a journalist and former foreign correspondent from France who, at 43, made a major decision to reinvent herself and travel the world for solo for six months. That trip ended up lasting four years – before cell phones, apps, and Google. During that time, she had numerous adventures, including getting lost in a Mozambican minefield and paddling her way out of a flood in the Philippines. Now in her 60s, Leyla travels the world solo as often as she can, documenting it all on Women on the Road, which is a website for solo travel over 50. However, after COVID-19 hit Leyla shifted her focus on her own country. Ever the optimist, she launched a new travel website called Offbeat France in which she shares lesser-known stories the guidebooks don't tell you. In this interview, Leyla talks about what her first solo trip as a teenager was like, how she supported herself through her journey as an adult, and why solo travel for women is important. This platform as you know it started several years ago in response to the lack of representation of female road travelers in the media we consume. After over 100 written interviews published online, followed by more than 100 episodes of the WOTR podcast and the growth of this tight-knit online community, we know there are still more conversations to be had.But we also feel, more strongly than ever, that in the spirit of what WOTR has aimed to do-- broaden our perception of who is on the road, and elevate those voices and stories-- that our current team at @ravel.media are not the ones who need to be hosting these conversations moving forward. That’s why we’re making some big changes. Thanks to Diversify Vanlife, we are partnering to evolve this platform so that it can further serve the conversations that aren’t being had enough, led by the people we need to hear from most.Starting in October, Diversify Vanlife will replace the WOTR podcast under the name Nomads at the Intersections. This monthly show, hosted by founder Noami Grevemberg and co-host Anaïs Monique, will shift the narrative and navigate the challenges, journeys and inspirations of the modern nomadic movement while diving deep into the stories of underrepresented voices. If you’re already subscribed to WOTR on your favorite podcast app, you’ll automatically start getting Nomads at the Intersections content as the re-launch approaches. As a queer couple, Natasha Seitz and Beth Luby challenge the notion we hear often online from white, straight couples: that the road always feels safe and strangers always seem welcoming. Can we hit the road responsibly during a pandemic? As someone planning to car camp or take a drive into the wilderness, you might not feel like you alone could make a huge impact on this pandemic-- but the reality is that travel can lead to transmission-- which means that travelers have the capacity to create an immense effect on the trajectory of viral spread. The good news is that we’re not here to make you feel guilty. We know you want to travel (we do too!), but more importantly: we want you to be knowledgeable and prepared, whether you’re planning to get out there soon, or hoping to sometime later in 2020. The reality is, we don’t really know. Van life: what started as a trend has only grown, evolving into a full-fledged movement in the US and beyond. And despite the multitude of vacation-style photos online showcasing this mobile living arrangement, there are many practical reasons people choose to live on the road for more than a couple weeks-- and no, it typically has nothing to do with Instagram. While the roots of living in your vehicle are several decades old-- it’s not a novel concept whatsoever-- there are more tools now than ever to make it accessible, and because of the economic outlook many Millennials are facing, the hashtag-turned-movement is also becoming a viable option to address affordable housing and creating a promising financial outlook. That said, as you’ll hear on this episode, it’s not so easy to go against the social grain and there are true challenges associated with not having a stable mailing address, crossing state lines regularly, and dealing with local community policies around vehicle habitation. To join this in-depth conversation, two incredible female travelers are giving their insights-- Bre Acio and Lacey Mayer, a couple who go by @theladiesvan on Instagram. Bre and Lacey are not only incredibly passionate about finding ways to make vanlife and long term vehicle habitation more socially acceptable, but own two businesses that do their part to make it more accessible to those who want to get on the road. In this episode, you’ll hear: What got Lacey and Bre’s business, SD Campervans, started How they have made campervan conversions as accessible as possible What The Vanlife App is, and how it’s different from others out there How to protect the public resources that makes road life sustainable The ways van life can be the answer to affordable housing The ways Bre and Lacey try to find balance between their businesses and their relationship Basics on city ordinances against vehicle habitation Lesser-discussed challenges of living on the road What the road travel community can do to create more protections for people living in vehicles Other Resources: Follow Bre and Lacey on Instagram - @theladiesvan Learn about SD Campervans Check out The Vanlife App Sign up for our newsletter to receive updates on our WOTR Camp Out happening this October near Moab, Utah! In this episode, we catch up with Jayme to hold an important discussion around miscarriage-- because getting real about what’s not being said is the only way to move toward a future where we all give ourselves permission to do the same. In this 2nd annual “Advice” episode, we ask our 9 most recent interviewees the 5 most commonly-asked questions we’ve been hearing online and in person from female road travelers. Because anything can-- and often does-- happen on the road, more perspectives usually help so that you can learn, reflect, and ultimately decide for yourself what feels right. And when we as female travelers share advice with one another, it does some important things: it normalizes that we are competent and can be sources of knowledge, and it also shows each other that there is no one way to do road travel. You can have a different perspective and still make it happen. In this episode, you’ll hear: Answers and insights to 5 commonly asked questions about traveling on the road: How do you finance your travels? What do you do about safety? Do you ever get lonely, and how do you combat that? What are your best tips for camping? What is one item you couldn't live without while traveling on the road? What happens when you practice understanding with the things you understand the least? We won't promise you'll end up living desert back roads in a giant orange camper like Brianna Madia, but we bet you'll build a life you never expected. The secret? Brianna takes the time to see potential where others might change course. Some people might see her old campervan, Bertha, and think that it's not worth the trouble-- that the potential for breakdowns make it too risky to live in. Some people might see her incredibly active dog, Dagwood, and think that he's too wild to give a home to. Some people might think that the desert back roads aren't the safest place to call home at all.But unlike most people, Brianna fell in love with all of the above, and in taking the time to truly understand and appreciate them for what and who they are, she's cultivated a unique life that reflects the very creatures she loves so much. From her life outdoors, to the dogs she loves, to the breakdowns and online criticism she faces-- this episode is full of Brianna Madia's beautiful stories of adventure and understanding.About Brianna:Brianna Madia is a storyteller and big orange van-dweller, spending most of her time in the deserts of southern Utah. Kit Whistler is probably the sweetest rebel you'll ever meet. When she first hit the road in 2010, it was in response to the physical stagnation she felt as a college student-- which resulted in a year of farmwork and backpacking around the States, and led her to discover parts of herself, and the land around her, she is now deeply connected to.Later on, when traditional “adult life” off the road didn't work, she hit the road again in 2012, this time with the expressed ambition to do nothing. To practice being idle. And in creating that space, Kit began the inner work many of us are afraid to do-- confront our fears and move forward in growth, learning that optimism is the most rebellious act we can take on as humans and finding ways to share that in any way she could.
