Did you know that approximately 2% of the world's population uses a wheelchair AND that nearly 20% of people have a disability that limits one or more activities of daily living? If you applied that math to Las Vegas, that means that roughly 840,000 wheelchair users and almost 8.5 million people with different levels of accessibility requirements travel to Vegas every single year. In the various Vegas-related Facebook groups I'm a part of, I often see questions from people who are apprehensive about visiting the city due to the perception that Vegas isn't very wheelchair friendly. Ashley Lyn Olson's entire life changed 2 weeks before her 14th birthday when she was involved in a car accident that took the life of her father, disabled her mother, injured her younger sister and paralysed Ashley, meaning she would have to spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair. One of Ashley's biggest passions in life was travel and all of this would have to change now. But the important word is "change" not "end"; Ashley switched around those "why can't I..." questions for "how could I..." questions and decided to find a new way to "Access the World!" This is now her motto and as well as being a public speaker and an author Ashley now work campaigning and consulting for improved accessibility as well as travelling herself and documneting her experiences through her blog - http://wheelchairtraveling.com - helping other diabled travellers find the information they need to make it a little bit easier to "ACCESS THE WORLD!"

But it was important to have this discussion with someone who has a lived experience. That person today is Kent A bit more about him: "I started travelling internationally at 23 years old. But the desire to travel started earlier. I think it came from moving a lot as a kid. Most of my travel these days is for tennis. Though I would love to do more just for the sake of going somewhere new. I have a slight preference for the natural wonders and sights than the cityscapes and a bit more on the adventure side. My ultimate trip would be kayaking the Inside Passage, Canada." Today, 3 December 2020, is International Day of People with Disability (IDPWD). Oh, and their son Cooper uses a wheelchair. Does that slow them down? Not really. "I think we almost choose places that aren't wheelchair accessible just to prove to ourselves that we can do it and are up for the challenge," Bron tells me.  Based in Melbourne, Australia, Bron's three kids attend local schools, but she pulls them out for adventure whenever she can. Her oldest son, Cooper, was born with a brain injury. For many parents, this dampens the idea of long-term family travel, but Bron found ways to make it work.   Travel Origins Bron was first bitten by the travel bug at 15 when she was an exchange student in Germany. Then later at 20 years old, she went to the US, to Lake Taho and taught kids to ski. "I had never seen snow," she says laughing, "never skied before in my life!” She was trained as a teacher, though, and so quickly learned the basics and how to relay that info to kids.  Wheelchair Travel in Places That Aren't Wheelchair Friendly Their first trip with Cooper was to Singapore when he was young. The trip was for therapy for Cooper, and there were other families there who had kids with the same condition, so their induction into family travel with disabilities started on the right foot. Routines, Resistance, & Insurance for Family Travel with Disabilities Family travel with mobility issues can pos specific challenges to your journey. Bron speaks frankly about some of them, and about some of their routines when flying with a wheelchair. She also talks about the importance of travel insurance. Unfortunately, they had to find out the hard way that "crappy cheap family travel insurance doesn’t work.” More on that story in the show. Despite the challenges, family travel has opened up their lives to new experiences, she says. Listen in as we talk about travel habits, planning, destinations, and other aspects of their story as a family traveling with a wheelchair. We would be extremely grateful! iTunes is a search engine as well, and so when you rate and review us, you help others find us. Thank you! :::   Family travel with a wheelchair Meet Cory Lee. Diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy at the age of two, Cory has had mobility issues his entire life. However, that's not stopped him from becoming an advocate for family travel with a wheelchair and strong voice for wheelchair users and the disabled travel community. Now 27, Cory travels with his mother or another companion, so the connection to family travel with a wheelchair is here. However, I wanted Cory on the podcast to show both parents and children with disabilities that wheelchair travel is possible, and more of the world is accessible to wheelchair users than you might realize. Origins of a wheelchair travel addict When Cory was a child, he and his mom traveled in the US every summer. A took a trip to Disney World planted the seed of wheelchair travel for Cory. Then at 15 his took his first international trip, and the seed began to grow. Fast forward 12 years and Cory has now visited 20 countries on six continents. His dream is to visit every continent, but he's still working on how family travel with a wheelchair will work in Antarctica. Tips for Travel with a Wheelchair Planning any family travel with a wheelchair? Cory gives a lot of advice, but perhaps the most wheelchair travel advice he gives is this: plan ahead. When we talked, he told me that he was presently planning a trip that wouldn't happen for another 12 months! There are many extra factors that wheelchair travelers need to consider, he says. Fr example, he needs a roll-in shower, and he needs to search hotels, transportation, and other factors to see just how accessible and wheelchair-friendly it will be. Best Destinations for Wheelchair Travel Looking for a great place for family travel with a wheelchair? Cory tells us a few of his favorites. We didn't have time to discuss everywhere, of course, but I was surprised at a few that he recommended, and a few that he thought needed work. For US travel with a wheelchair, Cory named Washington DC as the most wheelchair accessible destination. The trains, buses and attractions were all wheelchair accessible, he said, and when considering the monuments, museums and other sites, there is certainly much to see and do. Another wheelchair accessible travel destination? Las Vegas. Cory never had a problem getting a wheelchair accessible taxi in Las Vegas he said. Elsewhere in the Americas, Cory just returned from a trip to Ecuador, where he enjoyed the sites in Quito and took a tour through the Amazon. You read that right. Listen in to hear about it. In Europe, Cory had high praise for Iceland and the city of London. Both were excellent destinations for family travel with a wheelchair, he said. Surprisingly (to me at least), Paris was not. They could only locate one wheelchair accessible taxi during their stay, he said, and it didn't come cheap. Then again, Cory says that this was 2011, and a lot may have changed since then.  What would be Cory's top pick for wheelchair travel. Where does he think sisone of the best destinations for family travel with a wheelchair? Australia. "They really have it going on with disability," says Cory. In places like Sydney and Melbourne, be believes that both attractions and transport were designed with travel with a wheelchair in mind Do you know anything about family travel with a wheelchair? Let us know? Family travel whould include everyone, and so I want to share as many tips, stories and advice as possible. Let us know! I figured I could wait till a week out to book my hotel for the last leg of my trip to Belize. I had already booked the first half of trip in the Northern Jungles, and was undecided as to what part of the country's coastline I wanted to visit for the last four days of my week-long visit. I then discovered a surprising and time consuming truth. Belize is not exactly accessible to tourists in wheelchairs. Seriously folks, very little has really been done to open up this beautiful country to travelers with disabilities. Apparently, there are only a handful of hotels that have even a single accessible room. Even Frommer's.com concurs: "Most disabilities shouldn't stop anyone from traveling. There are more options and resources out there than ever before. However, in general, there are relatively few handicapped-accessible buildings or transport vehicles in Belize. A very few hotels offer wheelchair-accessible accommodations, and there are no public buses, commuter airlines, or water taxis thus equipped. In short, it's relatively difficult for a person with disabilities to get around in Belize." Read more: I loved this travel bloggers assessment which I read prior to seeing the proof myself: "The fact is, most of Belize simply isn't accessible for people with limited mobility. Or just for those of us who aren't as spry as we used to be. Hotels almost invariably are built elevated from ground level. Walkways at jungle lodges or even at regular hotels are cobblestone or rough boards or loose gravel. Often the best rooms, those with the views, are on the top floors, up several flights of stairs. I can count the number of hotels in Belize with handicap-accessible rooms on the arthritic fingers of one hand - Calico Jack's in Placencia, the original SunBreeze in San Pedro, Hok'ol K'in in Corozal Town, and maybe a couple of others. Aside from elevators in the high-rise hotels in Belize City, the Radisson Fort George, Renaissance Tower and the Princess, and the little one atCorona del Mar in San Pedro, here are almost no elevators anywhere in the country. Even the new condo developments in Placencia and Ambergris Caye are going up two, three or four stories without elevators. (Surely, developers will figure out the average buyer of a US$600,000 condo is not going to be a 20-something marathon runner, but more like a retired couple with a hip replacement or two?) I understand the problems of building in a hurricane- and flood-prone environment, on sand, on remote hillsides. I realize there are no laws requiring access for those with less than perfect mobility. In today's world of aging Baby Boomers with bum knees, though, there's a market for hotels and condos with easy access. Somebody is going to figure out that wide doors, access ramps and elevators sell. Even if it's not mandated by law, it can make good economic sense to make new construction in Belize accessible to everyone." http://www.belizefirst.com/RamblesAroundBelize2008.htm Banyan Bay www.banyanbay.com, located on San Pedro Island, was one ocean front hotel that was recommended and available (overlooking the pool - not ocean - as is typical for "handicapped rooms" are found to be placed in least desired locations), but I decided that I really preferred to go south to Placencia. A web search came up with Roberts Grove which prides itself on having an accessible room for those with disabilities. While they were incredibly gracious and helpful, by the time I was ready to book, the room was already reserved. Another wheeler was going to the resort that same week and they were going to have to build a ramp for him to a non-designated first floor room. They offered the same for me, but the bathroom wasn't accessible and they had a shower, no tub and no shower chair, so I declined this trip. I looked to Hotels.com and used their search option for "Accessible room." A few hotels that met my discerning criteria - including accessible rooms - came up! YAY!
