Rebekah Campbell is a serial entrepreneur who has played a lead role in the disruption of two industries. She's best known as the Co-Founder of Hey You, Australia's number 1 order ahead platform used by 900 000+ Aussies in cafes and quick service restaurants (QSR) Hey You grew out of the combination of Rebekah's Posse.com and another business called Beat the Q. She tells the story of how the 2 officially became 1 company in 2015. Hey You is evolving the way that people order and pay at cafes and QSR. Posse.com was founded in 2013 and was a social search engine that helped people find and recommend their favourite places and interact with storeowners. Posse at the time was used by 45,000 merchants worldwide and is backed by leaders from Google, Facebook, Twitter and E-Bay. Prior to Posse.com Rebekah founded Scorpio Music, one of Australia's most successful music companies. Scorpio developed the careers of Evermore, George, Lisa Mitchell, Matt Corby and many others. Rebekah also talks about writing her book - and why this was so important to her. She says "When I was writing, I just thought about one person and if I could help that one person to have the change that I have had in my life, it was worthwhile." Sounds familiar doesn't it? When thinking about our ideal client - think of that 1 person. How I got started, key facts and gems, books, mentors, mentality, sharing, communicating, having a team, not doing it all alone. Being open to the unknown & the unexpected, having a blueprint to guide but allowing space so the ego and control do not ruin the vision, the hope, the dream. Myrtle and Maude creates natural wellbeing products for pregnancy. Julia d'Albert Pusey is the Co-Founder and a super smart business woman. This episode is packed with about as much as can be packed into 40+ minutes. I think Julia is probably one of THE most prepared guests I've ever had on the show. Julia says: "Don't be scared of failing – just don't put a lot of money behind it" and explains how this applied in her previous business. "Set a financial limit" She also says: "You cannot go to the market with perfect option. Test the market on the cheapest option and see if there is a bite" She describes the early days in "Myrtle and Maude" when it was "not pretty" because getting something out there was most important. She describes the impact of Google shopping and then Amazon on their business. Myrtle and Maud is certainly a business to watch over the next few years. Julia is certainly a business woman to watch. Kelli Komondor says her motto might well be "Why not now?" Why wait another 5 years or 10 years - why not now? In this rich and rewarding conversation Kelli tells her story - and much more. 2020 - the year of necessary changes for small businesses, nonprofits and corporations. Kelli Komondor found the courage to follow her dreams to have a business of her own and to become a published author. Kelli took that leap and now runs a successful and growing business providing content, PR & marketing and branding to small businesses and nonprofits. This is a completely different style of podcast episode. Today I'm in conversation with Ian Whitworth as we discuss his book "Undistruptable. Timeless business truths for thriving in a world of non-stop change" Ian describes himself as "Failed vet student, amusement ride operator, audiovisual technician" He started his own advertising agency so he could give himself the creative director job he yearned for. That business won some awards which helped him start audiovisual business Scene Change - partly to test marketing ideas that his corporate clients felt were too weird. It worked, becoming a successful national firm in the event industry. Ian believes: "So many talented people want to give it a shot, yet they're held back by the big business myths. But success is simpler than your crusty CEO wants you to think." Ian built his businesses on simple rules, Year 6 maths, basic decency and no jargon. The book is terrific and is certainly written in Ian's very Australian writing style. Regular listeners know I ask similar questions of my guests. IN this episode Ian's questions are specifically about his book and the recurring themes he covers: the importance of building and nurturing relationships - with everyone selling is a skill and vocation that is vital to success good customer service is the foundation of good business money and measuring results is where true success comes from decency and common sense prevail Ian's book is published by Penguin and can be found wherever you buy your books. In fact he suggests you go find your local independent bookshop for your copy. Many of Rebel Therapist's program participants and listeners are brilliant folx who feel intimidated by the idea of consulting for organizations, and yet they have the gifts those organizations need. I'm talking about you. It's part of my mission to help healers, especially those who are queer/trans and/or BIPOC to parachute into organizations, facilitate real change, make lots of money, and not lose themselves in the process. If you want in on this exploration, this is for you. I'm so excited to bring you one of my personal heroes, Kristen Meinzer. Kristen is an award-winning podcaster, culture critic, royal watcher, and author. She currently hosts Movie Therapy with Rafer & Kristen, a podcast in which listeners write in with their quandaries, and she and her cohost Rafer Guzman respond with a mix of advice and viewing recommendations. She also hosts By The Book, a podcast in which she and her cohost Jolenta Greenberg live by the rules of a different self-help book in each episode. Her book, So You Want to Start a Podcast, won the Audie Award for best business/personal development audiobook of 2020. She was named a 2020 Woman of the Year by The Women's Center in Washington DC. In 2021, she was selected by the U.S. Department of State to serve in the U.S. Speaker's Program. As you may have noticed, most of the work she does is NOT consulting. Consulting is only about 10% of her business. If you'd like to bring your gifts to organizations as a side hustle, whether or not you want to grow that side hustle into a full time thing, listen up. You'll hear what worked for her, and what she's learned through mistakes to do differently. Your gift is probably not the same as hers. You're probably not poised to be a world class podcast consultant. Your gift may be around communication or healing trauma or Diversity Equity and Inclusion or something else. As you listen, think about how you could be bringing YOUR gifts into organizations. Here's some of what we talked about: Developing her primary consulting packages based on her years of experience Creating a valuable "prescription" document for each of her clients Find allies in organizations, especially if you're part of a marginalized community How she deals with the isolation and loneliness of being an entrepreneur Her mistake early on of giving away too much without getting paid How she sets up her pricing for individuals and for corporations The scary early months of starting her own business Her rolling to-do list and other productivity hacks Here are some takeaways that particularly stand out to me: Takeaway #1: One way Kristen creates immense value in her consulting work is by giving her clients a document with plans mapped out in tangible steps. She calls it her prescription. This is a way she demonstrates the value she's delivered and it helps the clients make the best use of the consultation. Takeaway #2: Especially if you're part of a marginalized group, look for people in an organization who can advocate for you. Find allies, nurture relationships and don't try to do everything alone. Takeaway #3: Kristen shared an early mistake so that you don't have to make it too. She gave too much away without getting paid. Now she's careful to limit what she shares before she officially gets hired. Takeaway #4: A piece of advice Kristen would give to her past self who was about to start her own business: Believe it's going to be OK and don't overwork out of anxiety. Nicki Krawczyk created a storm when she named her business Filthy Rich Writer - in fact she was surprised at the response. Nicki Krawczyk is determined to destroy the myth that writers don't make any money. After earning her degree in Public Relations and reading a book her mother gave her about how to become a copywriter and earn 6-figures, Nicki propelled herself into freelance work. She has worked with high calibre clients like Hasbro, TripAdvisor, and Adidas. Today, she heads her own training program and podcast, where she instils the proper skills writers need to reach their ultimate potential as self employed copywriters. It's this business she named Filthy Rich Writer - whatever "Filthy Rich" means ... In this terrific conversation Nicki gives us some solid and well thought through business philosophy - about pricing, about hiring others to help "as business owners we think we can do it all ourselves and we'll wait till we have more money before hiring someone. Truth is we need that person in place in order to make more money and to take biz to the next level" Nicki has her own way of dealing with the tough times and there certainly are tough times in business - "it's scarier than you think it will be and it's better than you think it will be and everything can happen in the same day." Nicki is a fun and lively guest and shares her stories and wisdom with generosity and a genuine desire to help you build and grow your business - whatever business that is. Settle in - whether with a cuppa T, driving along or out with your dog for a walk ... wherever you listen to your podcasts. At some point in your life, you've likely considered starting a side hustle. Perhaps you've thought of an idea that would benefit people, or maybe you're interested in turning a passion project into something more. But starting a side hustle can be a daunting task—and before you know it, you've grown frustrated and put the side hustle on the back burner while life takes over. It doesn't have to be that way, though. This episode's guests are Craig Clickner and Carrie Bohlig, the husband and wife duo behind Tandem Consulting and authors of the book So You Want to Start a Side Hustle: Build a Business that Empowers You to Live Your Life, Your Way. Carrie and Craig wanted to leverage entrepreneurship as a way to enrich their quality of life by giving them freedom and time. They've developed several streams of passive and progressive passive income and want to help entrepreneurs like you do the same.
Today's episode is a different type of interview than I normally share. After a recent podcast appearance of my own, I was approached by Danny Ozment, the host of ‘So You Want to Podcast?', about appearing as a guest on his show. But rather than just a straight-up interview, he suggested we do a podcast swap. So, instead of recording an interview for each of our shows separately, we recorded one conversation that we both could use for each of our shows. I thought that was a really interesting idea, so that's what you're hearing now. Danny is a marketing consultant, brand strategist and podcast producer who helps entrepreneurs and businesses create podcasts that build brand loyalty and make their marketing efforts more effective. Danny is a classically trained musician who previously worked in arts and music and found he needed to work from home to support his family. He uses his skill set to help podcasters and other businesses deliver their message more effectively. As I mention in the episode, we're both serving the same audience but in complementary ways, which makes for a great discussion and podcast swap. I'd love to hear your thoughts and takeaways from this one, for sure. Topics covered include: Our different approaches to opt-ins Danny's work history and how he transitioned into the podcasting space What makes a guest stand out for Danny The kind of equipment you need, both to appear on other people's podcasts and to start making your own The benefits of guesting on other people's podcasts When is a good time for people to start their own podcasts and not just guest on other peoples? Danny's thoughts on pitching: What makes them stand out in a good way? I hope you enjoyed this episode with two podcast nerds talking shop. And, I'd love to hear your thoughts as to whether or not you might consider the podcast swap approach for your podcast. Tag me on IG @angie_trueblood and let me know what you think. World Traveling Feminist meets Corporate Risk AnalystCraig and Carrie are a husband & wife duo, running companies, teaching mindset from their book ‘So You Want to Start A Side Hustle', having meaningful conversations on their podcast Tandem Talks, traveling the world doing keynotes & growing their non-profit Tandem Giving focusing on advocacy adoption for older children without families. They are a serious side hustle power couple and share their insight with you. They met as singles while building their own businesses, but their paths to entrepreneurship were very different.Craig first began to consider creating his own business while working in banking as a risk analyst in 2003. “I had just gotten promoted and, while I was very fortunate, I only got a 2% raise because the company hadn't performed well that year, even though I did. I realized the corporate world wasn't going to get me everything I wanted for my life. I needed to diversify.”Carrie began her business while studying sociology and women's studies at the University of Wisconsin. Living a modest student lifestyle, she was open to hearing about any opportunity that could earn her extra income. “My friend was excited about his business and, as the daughter of an entrepreneur, I was intrigued.” As graduation approached, she saw her roommates struggle to start their careers and pursue financial stability. “I wanted to have something of my own, and starting my business seemed like a perfect fit for the flexibility I was after.”Craig and Carrie met a few years later. “We shared a passion for business and liked the flexibility of having a career and a solid second income. It was exciting to build something together,” they add.The couple appreciates the flexibility their business affords them. It's also allowed them to focus on philanthropy. “We're committed to creating an endowment to support leadership and education for other entrepreneurs. It's the best way to leverage giving,” says Craig. And as parents, they appreciate creating something meaningful that will outlive them while also inspiring and empowering people around the world. “We only succeed together. That's the beauty of our business. We're not in business to make widgets, but to develop and empower people to help themselves. We meet them where they are in life, and can really help make a difference. We're vested in their success.”More from Craig & Carrie:Tandem Talks PodcastTandem ConsultingThe BookSupport the show (https://paypal.me/sidehustlecity)

I think we can all agree that gaslighting is the wooooorst. When you share a vulnerable or tough experience with someone and they respond in a way that makes you feel like you’re being dramatic and overreacting it really hurts. In this episode I cover the many ways that people gaslight one another, where the term comes from, why people engage in gaslighting, how to respond when someone is gaslighting you, and of course what to do if you realize that you’ve gaslighted someone else. I also share a few examples of times that I have been racially gaslighted, oof. If you need a little validation you’ll find it here. Don’t worry you’re not losing your mind, you’re being gaslighted. The message that the patriarchy and toxic masculinity negatively impacts men and boys as well as women has gotten louder in recent years. But what does that understanding mean for mothers who want to raise feminist sons? Seattle University journalism professor Sonora Jha joined us to offer her own thoughts about this complex and important question. In a deeply personal conversation with bestselling author Ijeoma Oluo, Jha shared her journey to raise a feminist son as a single immigrant woman of color in America. A story of struggling, failing, and eventually succeeding, she offers much-needed insight and actionable advice, pulled from her book How to Raise a Feminist Son: Motherhood, Masculinity, and the Making of My Family. Jha and Oluo discussed everything from teaching consent to counteracting problematic messages from the media, family, and the culture at large, arguing that we have big work to do when it comes to our boys. Jha presented wide-ranging research, showing us all how to be better feminists and better teachers of the next generation of men. Don’t miss this crucial conversation that will resonate with feminists who hope to change the world, one kind boy at a time. Sonora Jha, PhD, is an essayist, novelist, researcher, and a professor of journalism at Seattle University. She is the author of the novel Foreign, and her op-eds and essays have appeared in the New York Times, the Seattle Times, The Establishment, DAME, and in several anthologies. She grew up in Mumbai and has been Chief of Metropolitan Bureau for the Times of India and contributing editor for East magazine in Singapore. She teaches fiction and essay writing for Hugo House, Hedgebrook Writers’ Retreat, and Seattle Public Library. Ijeoma Oluo is the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller So You Want to Talk About Race and the recently-released Mediocre: The Dangerous Legacy of White Male America. Her work on race has been featured in the New York Times and the Washington Post, among many others. Buy the Book: https://www.elliottbaybook.com/book/9781632173645 Presented by Town Hall Seattle. Key Points From This Episode: - Get to know today's guest, Evan You. - Hear what Evan’s other project, Vite, is all about and the various features it has. - The biggest change with Vite 2 is that it is now framework agnostic. - What inspired the change to make Vite 2 more framework agnostic and the benefits of the shift. - The difference between working on Vue and building a new framework-agnostic build tool. - Balancing high configurability and being overly opinionated; Vite sits somewhere in between. - How Evan keeps his finger on the pulse of other frameworks and how he's changed Vue accordingly. - Insights into Vite's new plugin system and what inspired it. - The decision-making behind drawing inspiration from Rollup's plugin. - Evan’s thoughts about Vite and Rollup plugins and what this means in the context of Vue. - Some of the ideas Evan hopes to bring back to Vue after working on Vite. - Challenges come with wide adoption, but Evan is still grateful for the active community and what they are creating. - Changes that have happened with VitePress; Evan's experience. - The current VuePress landscape and why Evan does not want VitePress to replace it. - Plans to make Vite the default way of doing things on Vue CLI; Evan weighs in. - The challenge Evan has when switching between Vue and Vite. - What Vite's development process looked like; Evan had to learn lots along the way! - When you are working on something new, with not much precedent, it is never going to be a straightforward process - You have to try to put yourself in other developers’ shoes to understand the range of issues that exist. - Plans for a Vite RFC process and what is in the pipeline on that front. - The pre-bundling changes that have happened with Vite 2 have contributed to better speed. - Deciding what to bundle: insights into Evan's thinking. - Asking the controversial question: when is Vite 2 going to be released? - Evan's thoughts on using only Composition AI and not Vuex. - Music Evan listens to while coding and where to find him online. - Alex's pick for the week: Fruity Pebbles Crisps, both delicious and horrifying! - Evan's pick for the week: Curse of the Dead Gods and Hades. - Tessa's pick for the week: So You Want to Talk About Race, Birdy the Mighty Recode, and her electronic soap dispenser. - Following up from previous picks we have talked about. Tweetables: - “The biggest change with Vite 2 is that it's now framework agnostic, so it's not just Vue specific, it works equally well for most of the other frameworks people want to use.” — @youyuxi [0:02:56] - “With Vite, because it's a new thing, I can be as opinionated as I want. it's a new area of exploration, where I’m not confined to the existing decisions we've made.” — @youyuxi [0:08:21] - “Compared to Vue, the workload on Vite is still somewhat OK. If we build up more community members to help triage the issues, can contribute PRs, and maybe even build up some maintainers to handle the daily patch releases, that would be a good place for me, so that I can just overlook the higher-level decisions and only tune into specific decisions when I need to.” — @youyuxi [0:40:18] - “This whole process is a constant discovering new ideas, trying it out, realizing it doesn't work, and then trying something else. it's never going to be a straight-line process.” — @youyuxi [0:44:03] Resources mentioned: - Evan You (https://evanyou.me/) - Evan You on LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/evanyou) - Evan You on GitHub (https://github.com/yyx990803) - Evan You on Twitter (https://twitter.com/youyuxi?ref_src=twsrc%255Egoogle%257Ctwcamp%255Eserp%257Ctwgr%255Eauthor) - Ionic Vue (https://ionicframework.com/docs/vue/overview) - Jason Miller (https://www.linkedin.com/in/developit) - webpack (https://webpack.js.org/) - VuePress (https://vuepress.vuejs.org/) - Vue CLI (https://cli.vuejs.org/) - ALGTR (https://www.instagram.com/lexieliu_/?hl=en) - New Fruity Pebbles Crisps (https://www.simplemost.com/new-fruity-pebbles-crisps-are-big-potato-chips/) - Curse of the Dead Gods (https://www.focus-home.com/games/curse-of-the-dead-gods) - Hades (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1145360/Hades/) - So You Want to Talk About Race (https://bookshop.org/books/so-you-want-to-talk-about-race/9781580058827) - Minor Feelings (https://bookshop.org/books/minor-feelings-an-asian-american-reckoning/9781984820365) - Tetsuwan Birdy Decode (https://myanimelist.net/anime/3974/Tetsuwan_Birdy_Decode) - Panel de Pon (https://panepon.fandom.com/wiki/Panel_de_Pon_(SFC)) - SoSplush (https://www.etsy.com/shop/SoSplush) - Enjoy the Vue on Twitter (https://twitter.com/enjoythevuecast?lang=en) - Enjoy the Vue (https://enjoythevue.io/) Special Guest: Evan You.

There is a pop psychology theory about left brain and right brain dominance from the 1980s. Supposedly those with strong right brains are the analyzers and those with dominant left brains are the artists. In this scenario, it is a rare person who is lucky enough to have both sides of their brain work harmoniously; their logical and scientific right brain plays nicely with the creative and imaginative left brain. Our guest this week, debut novelist Christina Consolino would be one of those people. Christina grew up creating stories but also loved to read biographies of famous female scientists like the first female physicians in the United States; the Blackwell sisters. She loves to read fiction but decided to make a career in science by pursuing a PHD in physiology and teaching it at the college level. Like a lot of writers, the characters she created in her head wanted to come out; when they got louder, she knew it was time to embrace the life of a full-time author. Christina's first book which came out in March is called Rewrite the Stars. It is the story of a military veteran's PTSD and the havoc it has wrought on his marriage. The reader gets both his version of events, as well as those of his estranged wife, Sadie. Christina talks to us about how her experience as an editor gave her confidence to write her novel, what disease her veteran character originally had instead of PTSD through 3 drafts until she decided it just didn't serve her story well, and what name she calls her favorite teaching skeleton. Books Mentioned in this Episode: 1- Rewrite the Stars by Christina Consolino 2- The Value Tales series 3- A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith 4- The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett 5- The Sisters Blackwell by Janice Nimura 6- Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare 7- The Fault in Our Stars by John Green 8- Washington Black by Esi Edugyan (audiobook) 9- So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo 10- She Wouldn't Change a Thing by Sarah Adlakha 11- Sophie's Choice by William Styron 12- How the Penguins Saved Veronica by Hazel Prior 13- A Polar Affair by Lloyd Spencer Davis 14- A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman 15- Where'd You Go Bernadette? by Maria Semple Online magazines mentioned-- 1- Literary Mama Movies mentioned-- 1- Write Before Christmas
