Underneath It All Show NotesSeason 4, Episode 13: Type 9: The PeacekeeperGrizel is joined by Kelsie, an Enneagram 9 Mentor, who helps other Enneagram Type Nines deal with mental health, conflict, boundaries, and more. On this episode, Grizel and Kelsie talk about accountability to dig into emotions, the unique emotional thresholds, and how to hold space for conflict as an Enneagram Type 9: The Peacemaker. From Truity.com: Nines are defined by their desire to maintain a sense of inner peace and harmony, and to avoid conflict or other emotional disturbances. They are typically agreeable, calm, and easy to be around. Nines rarely rock the boat, but they can be stubborn. While they typically go with the flow, they dislike being controlled and will respond with passive resistance if pushed too far.Deepest Fear: Nines fear being too needy and thus pushing people away. They cope with this fear by submitting to the desires and agendas of the people around them: being agreeable in order to be included.Core Motivations: Nines are motivated by their need for peace and harmony in their environment, and the desire to avoid conflict and deal with unpleasant emotions. Grizel will be sharing her holistic approach to this outdoor adventure and hopes that these conversations will help others to talk about mental health and break the negative stigma that surrounds the topic.Self reflection questions for this episode:What makes you feel so like yourself the most? Does that involve others? Does that mean being by yourself? What keeps you from pursuing hobbies? What keeps you from experiencing happiness? Are you living a lifestyle you want? If you change one thing about your life, what would it be?What societal roles are you fulfilling that you don't want to fill anymore? What societal rules did you grow up believing? What keeps you from sharing your mental health with others? What parts of yourself are difficult to change? What parts of yourself are easy to victimize and not move on from? What is the goal for outdoor adventures and when can it be changed from getting to that peak, to checking in and listening to your body, mind and emotional needs?Who is one person you trust to talk about REAL life with? Why do you trust them? The climate crisis becomes more severe by the day, and until more brands and distributors take a stronger initiative to reduce their carbon footprint with consumers, partnerships, and global strategies, the crisis will only get worse. It's easy to get overwhelmed by the climate crisis and not know where to begin as far as action steps, but similar to making changes in our own personal lives, Salomon is mindful of the small steps necessary in order to achieve bigger impacts. We were supposed to be hiking around the Windy City from My 26-June 14 to raise money for the Hiking My Feelings Wilderness Wellness Center, the American Diabetes Association and RAINN, the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization. COVID had other plans, so we postponed our 220-mile hike and pulled together the Hiking My Feelings Virtual Campfire in less than a month. 20 nights, 60+ guests, all gathering in the name of hope, healing, and inspiration. Going live for 2+ hours for 18 straight nights so far has been absolutely incredible. These conversations and the energy exchanges happening every night are what keep us going. We've been getting texts and DMs every day asking if we're tired yet and truthfully, we aren't. Our bodies may be desiring more rest, but our spirits are soaring to the highest heights and we are snuggled up in this cocoon of gratitude that you're all helping us co-create. This is the world we want to live in. One where stories matter and aren't reduced to listicles and quick consumption. A moment to slow down, connect in community, and remember why we are here: to experience all facets of the human condition. We love every single guest we've had. We love every single donor. We have so much love to give and we are so grateful for those who have shown up to receive it. Tonight's campfire is one you won't want to miss. Grizel Williams is joining us to share a bit about her experience hiking THOUSANDS of miles around the US and her passion for starting conversations about mental health. Tui from The Late Ones is joining us for an interview and live acoustic performance, and Jay from the Chicago Outerbelt Alliance is going to share a bit about his mission to make the healing power of nature more accessible by creating a 220-mile urban backpacking loop around the city of Chicago and surrounding suburbs. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/hikingmyfeelings/support

On the very first episode of “Where We Walk: Stories from the Appalachian Trail,” we’re looking back - but as you’ll hear, the memories we make on the Appalachian Trail, or A.T., extend beyond the real-time steps we take. We share submissions from women whose lives have been shaped by the A.T., whether on a thru, section, or day hike.Trails help us access landscapes both familiar and new, as well as give us the grace and space to explore our interior lives. We hope that in listening, you’ll reflect on how long trail experiences filter into your daily lives. In the first of a 6-part series in collaboration with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, we explore your memories of the A.T. and the ripple effect of those experiences.About the series: This story-forward six-part series, in partnership with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and made possible with support from REI, highlights the Appalachian Trail through both the women who helped to build it as well as those who continue to make it what it is today. Our goal is to tell a multi-dimensional story of the Trail through a range of voices from diverse backgrounds. Each episode will have a unique theme that helps tell the story of the way we shape the Trail, but more importantly — how the Trail shapes us. Grizel is a Latinx mental health therapist, former van dweller, writer, thru hiker, photographer, and host of our team’s latest show, Underneath It All-- a series that dives deep into the spaces where the outdoors and mental health intersect. More than ever, we’ve seen the overt and profound need to keep the conversation around mental health going, which is why we are so thankful for folks like Grizel who not only bring professional insight and deep compassion into their work-- but also want to share their learnings and experiences so openly with others. If you haven’t gotten to know a bit about Grizel yet, we figured this was as good of a time as any. That’s why we mashed up Grizel’s recent Women on the Road interview from the spring with Episode 1 of Underneath It All so you can learn a bit about her-- both as someone who loves the outdoors and travel-- and also as a podcast host committed to helping open up more conversations around how we can take care of ourselves and others.Other resources mentioned in this episode:Listen to Underneath It All, the newest Ravel Media podcast, and subscribe!Follow Underneath It All on Instagram: @underneathitallpodFollow Grizel on Instagram: @_grizel_Women On The Road on Instagram - @womenontheroadJoin the Women On The Road Podcast Facebook groupEnjoy this episode? We often talk about these wild outdoor adventures we embark on, highlighting the highs, even the lows, but we forget to discuss how we got there in the first place. Underneath it All, hosted by Grizel, dives deep into the stories of everyday people who have or are currently experiencing mental health difficulties and how the outdoors has influenced them. Because sometimes, what drove us to climb the highest peaks was experiencing the lowest valleys of our lives. Through these stories, we hope you can have a better understanding of others around you, learn to accept and fully embrace your own narrative, and to continue breaking the negative stigma that has engulfed mental health.Join the Underneath it All Community on FacebookResources/Links:Follow Underneath it All on InstagramUnderneath it All WebsiteFind Grizel on InstagramUnderneath it All airs bi-weekly on Mondays. Griz, known off trail as Grizel Williams, is a strong, fierce LatinX woman one trail away from completing her Triple Crown. She found in hiking a space to find herself. And in this episode, we talk about hiking with a dog, building a safe place for people to share their stories, creating a bridge between mental health, and hiking and the trekking pole ninja.
Mental health is something we've talked about before on the show, but never before has it felt more important to dive in. That's why this week, we took some time to focus on what challenges, resources, and tips this community has and needs. Whether you're a full-time traveler and your shelter is a car or a tent, or you have a more stationary place to stay and you're feeling stagnant-- the reality is that this forced by necessary stillness is a challenge for us all, on top of the anxiety that can be triggered during crisis. It's a good thing for us all that insightful, compassionate folks like Grizel Williams are a part of our community. A sad, yet seemingly inevitable byproduct of long distance backpacking is pain and injury. Though it's not a guarantee, to escape a long distance trek without one of the two or both is a rare feat. Consequently, two popular questions for thru-hikers are how to prevent injury while on trail and what to do about it once an injury manifests. In episode 17 of Backpacker Radio, the Paprika Pals are joined by Dr. Emily Kelly, a physical therapist based in Centennial, Colorado. She answers Badger and Chaunce's selfish injury related questions, along with a slew of others sent in from Writers and Bloggers at The Trek. If you're dealing with a hiking-related injury or are looking for ways to reduce your injury risk, there's some valuable insight in this podcast for you. Subjects discussed include: Vermont is the 14th state and insecure about its cheese quality relative to Wisconsin REI's Hawaiian shirts are too dude centric Grizel gets hit by an RV Emily Kelly DPT at Fit Physical Therapy in Centennial, CO Meniscus Bucket Handle Tear SPECIFIC QUESTIONS How long after ACL reconstruction can someone get back into hiking? If you sustain an ankle injury such as a strain or sprain while on trail, is it safe to keep hiking, and if so, what steps can be taken to promote healing and avoid further injury, while continuing to backpack? If you HAVE to get off trail, what steps can be taken at home to do the same, as well as to condition yourself to return to hiking as quickly as possible? I had an ACL reconstruction done a few months ago, and am struggling to get my quad and other “hiking” muscles to come back. What is the best way to work on getting these back so that as soon as I am cleared, I can get back on trail as quickly as possible? Knee injuries are incredibly common amongst long distance backpackers. What are the most common causes of knee pain for backpackers; how best to treat them, and what exercises can be done prior to hitting the trail to strengthen the knees? I have herniated disks between shoulder blades and in cervical spine that compress and push on spinal nerve after prolonged hiking. Strengthening muscles around area helps with daily pain but prolonged backpacking causes sharp severe pain. Is there a high potential for causing more damage by backpacking? What advice, stretches, forms, weight placement of items in backpack would they suggest to minimize pain? What are your thoughts about people starting a thru-hike while recovering from existing injuries? What kind of mobility aids they would recommend bringing on a hike to treat your own injuries? What are the top concerns you have (or deals with) regarding hikers. When should you work through pain in injury recovery vs. use pain as indicator to stop pushing? Top stretches for our aching hiker bodies? Does time of day matter? The best way to deal with osteoarthritis in back/hip, knees and feet. The grinding of the joints is somewhat painful after a few 12-15 mile days and I cannot take ibuprofen. I got off the trail in May due to back pain. I had a spinal fusion with harrington rods at age 8 and again at 13. I've been told by chiropractor that I would cripple myself if I continued. I recently saw an orthopedic spine specialist that said I can do anything I want as long as I could handle the pain of it. What Do I do??? I miss the trail so much. I am full out depressed being in the real world. Advice for IT band pain? Both on trail and at home. How to Physically Prepare for a thru-hike. Achilles Tendinitis- best stretches and how to use KT tape for treatment. Best way to transition yourself back to life off the trail?
