Welcome to our podcast where we discuss and deliberate over memoirs and biographies found in thrift shops. This is a great way to do things as we are not choosing who to read about. We may not be fans of the person, we may never have heard of the person and we never know who we are going to find next...There are only 2 rules to this podcast. The book has to be found in a thrift shop and we are not allowed to talk about the book until we press record, which is sometimes agonising. We have lots of episodes coming up so if you find yourself enjoying our podcast, please be sure to subscribe to be among the first to hear about each episode.
In this episode of The Grassroots Show on the EquiRatings Eventing Podcast, Sam Watson returns to the mic to join Nicole Brown for a brilliantly practical and mindset-focused deep dive into four of the most common mistakes riders make across all three phases of eventing. From the traps of trying too hard to misunderstanding the true role of rider responsibility, Sam shares hard-earned wisdom, hilarious analogies, and honest advice you can apply at any level. Whether you're trotting down the centreline or tackling a big cross-country track, this one is packed with insight. Episode Highlights: Why "trying harder" isn't the answer: Success often comes from calm, consistent, simple habits — not more effort in the saddle. Dressage: Focus on the process, not the shape: The "one-handed riding rule", the myth of being on the bit, and the trap of chasing outcomes. Show Jumping: Control what you can: You can't control your eye for a stride — but you can control speed, rhythm, softness, and the setup. Cross Country: Stay in your lane: Riders have four jobs: straightness, speed, softness, and staying on. The rest is up to the horse. Loose jumping, roast dinners, and emotional chaos: Sam makes it relatable with real-life parallels — including why preparing a Sunday roast has a lot in common with a successful eventing round. Nicole Brown '98 is the president of TriStar Pictures, the famed Sony Pictures division responsible for producing many of the most influential films in movie history. In this episode, Nicole tells her story—from growing up in Culver City and attending public and private schools, before discovering Harvard-Westlake through the Independent School Alliance. It was at HW where Nicole met the late great performing arts teacher Ted Walch, who encouraged Nicole (a budding actor) to consider working “on” student productions—rather than "in" them. The message stuck, leading Nicole to study history and film at Columbia University, pursue a life-changing internship with Marc Platt and executive role at Good Universe, and then finally—seize the opportunity to lead TriStar in 2020. Nicole references Ted Walch of Harvard-Westlake, as well as film producer Marc Platt and Sony Pictures Chairman Tom Rothman, as profound influences and mentors.
