Actor/Author Jeff Hiller (Actress of a Certain Age): "This Poor Delusional  Middle-Aged Queen"

DENNIS ANYONE? with Dennis Hensley

Dennis is joined via Zoom by actor Jeff Hiller to discuss his new memoir Actress of a Certain Age as well as his recent Emmy nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy for the HBO series Somebody Somewhere. Jeff talks about being completely surprised by the nomination, his plan to enjoy every moment of the Emmy experience and how happy he is to get to share it with the series' star Bridget Everett who is nominated in the writing category. He also talks about what it meant to play such a kind, nuanced character like Joel after years of often snarky smaller parts with names like Flight Attendant and Waiter. He also talks about making a vision board that was eerily similar to Joel's and he made his long before he even knew about the show. He also recalls spending a semester as an exchange student in Namibia in college and the story in his book hat made Dennis cry about receiving a very gay sign from his mother after she passed away. Other topics include: why he likes auditioning, how doing a lot of improv helps him in day-to-day life, carving up a twink on American Horror Story and loving it, that time Ryan Murphy ordered more cockrings and why you should never let a new guy you're dating come to your improv show.

The Liquids Ban - An Aviation Rule Origin Story

It's been nearly 19 years to the day since we have had restrictions on taking liquids through onto the aircraft. Almost 2 decades of decanting our toiletries into small containers, of getting held up because we forgot to empty our water bottles, and countless expensive bottles of perfume have no doubt been confiscated. For pilots and flight attendants, it changed the way we work!Do you remember why though? It's something we are so used to now that many of us don't remember what led us to that place. And it all started in the UK. A local terrorist plot that had consequences worldwide and changed aviation and travel forever. In today's episode of The Red Eye, we have a dramatization of the events of that day. The day that the liquids were banned on planes.Music Credits for The Liquids BanOminous & Gloomy - Music by ViraMiller from PixabaySnowy Peaks pt I - Chris HaugenYacoby - SchwartzySound Effects by freesound_community from Pixabay Sound Design by Ally MurphySend us a text! A union member since 1996, she's been the International President of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, AFL-CIO since 2014. You may remember her integral role in threatening a strike, which helped pressure the Trump administration to end the 2019 government shutdown. But under the second Trump term, the administration plans to gut many government agencies and has canceled one million contracts for federal workers so far. “We have to understand that if one group is under attack, we're next,” she tells Laura Flanders in this exclusive interview. “So we have to rush to each other's sides.” In this episode, Nelson and Flanders explore labor movement tactics and strategies, wins and losses, and why general strikes and cross-industry worker solidarity are critical in this moment. What is her message and her mission for 2025? All that, plus a commentary from Laura on floods and profits.“We have to understand that if one group is under attack, we're next. So we have to rush to each other's sides. But we can also turn this around and not just be on defense. . . We are in a crisis. Yeah. Our world is burning. Women and the Jet Age: A Global History of Aviation and Flight Attendants (Cornell University Press, 2025) is a global history of postwar aviation that examines how states nurtured airlines for competing political and economic goals during the Cold War. While previous histories almost exclusively stress US and Western European aviation progress, Dr. Phil Tiemeyer examines how smaller, poorer states in socialist Eastern Europe and in the postcolonial Global South utilized airlines of their own to forge rival pathways to modernization. Part of this modernization involved norms for working women. Stewardesses at airlines around the globe encountered novel threats to their dignity as the Jet Age approached. By the late 1960s, stewardesses endured harsh objectification: High hemlines, tight uniforms, and raunchy marketing were touted as modern and liberated. These women, whether from the West, East, or South, forged their own pathways to achieve greater dignity at work. In Women and the Jet Age, Dr. Tiemeyer's global account of the rise of air travel and of early feminist strivings among stewardesses is one of the first histories to place such developments—political, economic, and feminist—in dialogue with each other. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. When corporate profits hit record highs but workers are still fighting for fair pay, safe conditions, and a seat at the table, something's off.In this premiere episode of The Debrief, a special series from Cuckoo 4 Politics, host Michael Desrosiers brings you one-on-one conversations and post-show commentary that go deeper than the main episode ever could. These are the follow-ups, the “after the mic” moments where the real talk continues and nothing's left on the cutting room floor.Michael sits down with Sara Nelson, International President of the Association of Flight Attendants, for a straight-talking conversation about the widening gap between booming business and the people behind it. Why are airline workers still battling for fair contracts in the wake of a post-pandemic surge? What happens when companies flood social media with curated half-truths? And how do you keep people united when the system is designed to wear them down?Sara breaks down what's in the tentative agreement and what's not. She pulls back the curtain on the pressure to settle for less, the reality behind corporate messaging, and the danger of a labor movement losing momentum. Michael and Sara also zoom out to look at the bigger picture: outdated labor laws, the limits of collective power, and why organizing doesn't stop at the bargaining table; it extends to ballots, policies, and public opinion. This is a grounded, no-fluff look at where things stand, what's at risk, and why staying loud still matters.Episode Breakdown:00:00 Introduction01:40 Sara Nelson on Why She Never Backs Down03:08 The Real Power of Worker Solidarity06:06 What Mother Jones Got Right About Labor08:12 The 4 D's of Union-Busting13:05 Clearing Up Misinformation About the Contract15:06 Why Hotel Standards Matter in Union Negotiations20:11 Protections Around Electronic Notifications22:32 Can Labor Laws Actually Be Changed?26:45 Why Healthcare Shouldn't Be on the Bargaining Table28:55 How Corporate Money Distorts Democracy32:55 “We're the Tide”: Sara Nelson's Final Word on Collective Power38:01 The Importance of Voting and Union ParticipationLinkscuckoo4politics.comhttps://www.instagram.com/cuckoo_4_politics/https://www.facebook.com/Cuckoo-4-Politics-104093938102793https://www.tiktok.com/@usercuckoo4politicshttps://bsky.app/profile/cuckoo4politics.bsky.socialPodcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Flight attendants are the face of the airline industry, yet many still aren't paid until the plane leaves the gate—while executives take home millions.Michael Desrosiers talks with Sara Nelson, International President of the Association of Flight Attendants, about what's behind the latest contract fight at United Airlines and why this moment matters for every airline worker. With decades of experience in labor organizing, Sara lays out how outdated laws, corporate tactics, and union density shape what workers can win—and what they're still being denied. The conversation traces the long arc of labor rights in the airline industry, from the aftermath of 9/11 and a wave of bankruptcies to the current push for boarding pay and sit-time protections. Sara explains how the Railway Labor Act limits the right to strike, why Delta's flight attendants are organizing without a contract, and what it really means to bargain under pressure when CEOs are already cashing in.What happens when the face of the airline, its workers, finally demands their share? And what's lost when a contract gets voted down? This episode is a clear-eyed look at worker power, corporate delay tactics, and the strategic fight to take back what labor built.Episode Breakdown:00:00 Introduction01:06 Union Power and Labor Wins03:03 How Labor Law Shapes Airline Contracts05:54 United Airlines Tentative Agreement Explained07:10 Corporate Influence and Political Climate10:05 Why Union Density Impacts Income Inequality14:08 9/11's Lasting Impact on Airline Labor19:10 Pandemic Relief and the Payroll Support Program21:06 Delta Airlines and Union Busting Tactics26:05 The Role of Pattern Bargaining in Raising Standards29:03 The Push for Boarding Pay and Fair Compensation35:00 Frustration with Executive Bonuses and Worker Pay38:00 The Right to Strike Under the Railway Labor Act43:00 Why Locking in Gains Now Strengthens Future Negotiations45:00 What It Will Take to Shift the Balance of PowerLinkscuckoo4politics.comhttps://www.instagram.com/cuckoo_4_politics/https://www.facebook.com/Cuckoo-4-Politics-104093938102793https://www.tiktok.com/@usercuckoo4politicshttps://bsky.app/profile/cuckoo4politics.bsky.socialPodcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Send us a textIn this episode we explore Operation Pedro Pan, the clandestine operation of the U.S. Government, the Catholic Church and Pan American World Airways to relocate over 14,000 children out of Cuba to the United States between 1960 and 1962. Our guest for this episode is Pan Am veteran Yvonne Conde who wrote the book Operation Pedro Pan: The Untold Exodus of 14,048 Cuban Children. She will share many personal insights on being one of the many children that were sent away by their parents for a better future in America in the early 1960s. Yvonne will also share her stories of working for Pan Am during her 18 years in the air as a flight attendant. Her father, Pedro Conde, worked for Pan American in Havana from the 1940s to the early 1960s. Yvonne is a freelance writer based in New York City and has written for Latina Magazine, Crain's, Smithsonian, and Hispanic Business Magazine and has been featured on the NewHour with Jim Lehrer and National Public Radio. Operation Pedro Pan facilitated the migration of Cuban children to the United States as a response to the Cuban Revolution and the subsequent fear among Cuban families that their parental rights would be revoked and their children would be indoctrinated into communism.Under the operation, more than 14,000 Cuban children, primarily between the ages of 6 and 18, were sent to the U.S. without their parents. The children were placed in foster homes, orphanages, and other institutions, with the intention of reuniting them with their families later. The operation ended during the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962 that put the United States and the Soviet Union on the brink of nuclear war. Support the show Visit Us for more Pan Am History! The murder of Northwest Airlines flight attendant Nancy Ludwig at Detroit's Airport Hilton sparked one of Michigan's most exhaustive investigations of the early 1990s. Detective Lieutenant Ken Krause masterfully organized the Romulus Police Department's response, creating sophisticated tracking systems for the 2,300 tips that would eventually flood their office. What makes this case particularly fascinating is the stark contrast between meticulous police work and the unreliability of human perception. When a hotel desk clerk confidently claimed Ludwig had stayed at the hotel previously and received a mysterious phone call the night of her murder, investigators quickly disproved both statements. This perfectly illustrates why seasoned detectives approach eyewitness testimony with healthy skepticism, despite its powerful sway over juries. The investigation's scope was breathtaking. Detectives compiled databases containing 8,000 hotel guests, 2,600 gold Monte Carlo owners, and countless flight crews, all while working double shifts and sometimes sleeping on the detective bureau floor. They pursued forensic evidence with equal vigor, identifying that the killer had blood type A and secreted a rare enzyme called PGM2-1+ found in less than 2% of males. This scientific clue led them to test 200 potential suspects, though all were ultimately cleared.Even the smallest pieces of evidence received scrutiny that bordered on obsessive. A piece of two-ply nature jute twine used to bind Ludwig's wrists was traced through distributors to companies that might employ the killer. Composite sketches from multiple witnesses were distributed widely, with flight attendant Lin Nelms even placed under hypnosis to enhance her recall of the suspect. As theories ranging from jilted lovers to elaborate terrorist plots were methodically investigated and dismissed, the case demonstrates how homicide detectives must balance scientific analysis with human intuition. When Detective Link Helton admitted to meeting a mysterious woman in a parking lot to receive potential evidence, noting "there was no length I wouldn't go to solve this case," he captured the relentless dedication that drives investigators even when confronted with seemingly endless dead ends.Have you ever wondered what happens when thousands of leads all seem to lead nowhere? Follow this riveting account of detective work at its most persistent and discover how even the most challenging cases never truly go cold in the minds of the detectives who pursue them.Send us a text Support the show
