This month on Shirley Robertson's Sailing Podcast we preview the 37th America's Cup, as the city of Barcelona readies for what promises to be one of the most exciting editions of the famous trophy.Five Challengers are set to battle it out on the fastest foiling monohulls ever built, as they go head to head in the Louis Vuitton Cup, in a fight to take on the Defender, the current holder of the trophy, Emirates Team New Zealand.Robertson talks to representatives from all six of the Cup teams, chatting to team members with a wide range of roles, to get a real insight from across the fleet into what to expect come race day.In this edition, Part One, Robertson kicks off with Emirates Team New Zealand naval architecht, Dan Bernasconi, the brains behind the AC75, the foiling mono-hull that all six teams have built for this edition. With all six AC75s now blasting around the waters off Barcelona at speeds of up to fifty knots, Bernasconi discusses some of the differences between the race boats, as well as discussing changes to the rules for this edition, and the issues that the lumpier sea state off Barcelona may bring.Robertson also then talks to Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli's port-side helm, Francesco Bruni, helming partner to Jimmy Spithill in the last Cup, the pair that pioneered the dual-helm setup now favoured by all of the America's Cup teams. While at Luna Rossa, Robertson also caught up with match racing guru Philippe Presti, to take a look at how the increased manoeuvrability of the version two AC75s may lead to more engagement and closer racing as the Challenger Series kicks off.Robertson then heads to AC37 HQ, to catch up with Abby Ehler, the offshore sailing legend and sailing logistics supremo now tasked with delivering the Youth and Women's editions of the America's Cup. Twelve teams will compete in the AC40 race boats for both the UniCredit Youth America's Cup and the Puig Women's America's Cup, the youth event making a return to the regatta after a break in AC36 due to covid travel restrictions. This is however the very first time a women's regatta will take place at the America's Cup, a first that is heralded as a landmark event in sailing's long road to gender equality. This edition of the podcast is in two parts - in part two Robertson catches up with representatives of the remaining four teams.Support the Show.

This week on the show, Pam and Sarah are joined by offshore sailor Joan Mulloy, just three weeks after giving birth to her son Xavier. She is the first Irish woman to compete in La Solitaire and, prior to getting pregnant, she was planning on competing in the 2020 Vendée Globe, which starts on November 8, but 2020 turned out very differently for her.The Vendée Globe is a solo race around the globe and there have only been seven women in the race since its inception in 1989. This lack of representation left Joan feeling like she had limited role models in the sport, especially in an event as unique and lengthy as the Vendée Globe. Entering the race would mean months at sea, away from family, so Joan sought advice from other female offshore sailors who had paved the way. They recommend that she do what her body told her. So once Joan hit her second trimester she made the decision to scale back her on ocean training, instead opting to stay onshore. In offshore sailing races, you often have to go from zero to hero in a few short seconds, from grabbing a few minutes rest—of which you might only get 15 minutes over a few days of racing—to being up on deck making a quick maneuver. These conditions make it less than ideal for an expectant mother. Joan’s passion for her career was clear and starting her family only strengthens her passion, knowing that she is going to be the best mum if she is happy and fulfilled in her sailing career. As with all the sportswomen we have talked to, the importance of your support network is key to success as an athlete, and for the child’s wellbeing. We are very grateful that Joan shared her birth story with us because it’s our hope that these personal accounts will help other women on this journey. And before you go take a listen to Joan talking about the sport on the WiSP Sports The Sailing Show with Abby Ehler and friends.Hosts: Sarah Newberry Moore & Pam Relph JonesPodcast length: 50 minsSubscribe to WiSP Sports or WiSP Sports Mum's the Word on your podcast app.For more information, links and resources plus conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. On this episode Abby Ehler and Joan Mulloy, co-host to discuss motherhood in sailing. Joan is one of Ireland’s most inspiring young sailors, having represented her country on the global racing stage. In 2018, Joan became the first Irish woman to represent her country at the high-profile international Solitaire Le Figaro race. Her ultimate ambition is to be the first Irish person to complete the Vendée Globe, a solo round-the-world race. Joan has some very exciting yet challenging news not only of navigating the COVID environment but also that she is pregnant and expecting her first baby in September. Joan had been thinking about how much she would love to hear from other female offshore sailors talking about their experiences of motherhood and raising a family alongside their sailing careers. So the aim of this podcast is to delve into the topic of Motherhood and a sailing related career, with the aim of chatting to guests Carolijn Brouwer and Maria Bertrand to talk about their experiences and share any advice to those, like Joan, who are about to enter into the new world of being a mum and many others who are wondering how on earth it is possible to juggle such an unconventional job with being a parent. Carolijn Brouwer has successfully navigated the balance of sailing as a career and being a mother, Carolijn many of you will already know is an experienced dinghy and offshore sailor, having won the last edition of The Volvo Ocean Race with DongFeng Race Team. Maria Bertrand will be a little less known to the sailing world from the outside, however she is certainly no less important and is a master of sailing team logistics and a natural born organiser. Maria, has two children, now aged eight and four, and has worked for five editions of the Volvo Ocean Race. If you think about sailing a yacht round the world, what image comes into your mind? Fantastic sunsets, calm seas, whales and dolphins appearing intermittently, and balmy days in a bikini? Yep, me too. The reality of round-the-world ocean racing is somewhat different: I’m sure the wildlife encounters can be pretty special and there are no doubt some spectacular sunsets, but yachts sail 24/7 during their legs at sea and the Volvo Ocean Race is well-known to be one of the toughest sporting events in the world. It is certainly the longest, and involving 9 months at sea, enormous physical and mental human challenge and a daily battle against the elements. Yacht racing is also one of the few sports where men and women compete alongside one another, although it has traditionally been a male-only domain, and for centuries it was considered bad luck to take a woman to sea on your boat. Times are fortunately changing, and my guest this week is Abby Ehler, now veteran of 3 Volvo Ocean Races, including this year’s voyage, where she was part of Team Brunel that placed third overall after a gruelling 9 months of sailing. Abby was previously the boat captain for Team SCA, the first all-female team to compete for 12 years when they took part in the Volvo Ocean Race in the 2014-15 competition. Over 250 women applied for 15 spots on that boat, so clearly there is an appetite for women to compete at the very highest levels within the sport. Off the back of Team SCA, the Magenta Project was founded to promote and encourage women at the top end of sailing. Abby is now their Director of Media and Events. in addition to being a mum to her son and racing regularly both at home and abroad. They also chat about the Tour Voile and Moth sailing; the classes of boat and skill-sets involved in these varying disciplines of sailing. And later on in the show they share the proposed double handed, offshore class that is currently under review as an Olympic category, which they feel could really help to bridge the gap from Olympic dinghy sailing to the keelboat and offshore leagues. Abby Ehler knows what it's like to sail around the world having been the Boat Captain on Team SCA in the 2015/6 Edition of the Volvo Ocean Race. Chris Stafford caught up with her while she was home in England for some R& R, fresh food and family time to hear what has been the most intense part of the race so far and why she's enjoying being on a mixed team. Donald Trump's dismissal of his comments about women as "locker room talk" has angered the sporting community. But is there some truth in what he's saying - in terms of what is said in players' dressing rooms? Former NFL player Joe Ehrmann is now coaching American sportsmen to change their negative attitudes towards women. He believes that the outcry over Trump's comments can be used as a catalyst to change those attitudes. As Fifa continues its process of reform following a series of corruption scandals, Joyce Cook has become the first disabled person to be appointed to the management board of world football's governing body. A wheelchair user herself, she's initiated a range of diversity and inclusion projects within the game. How does she see her new role at Fifa? The Volvo Ocean Race is encouraging more female sailors to take part by introducing mixed crews for next year's race. Men-only line-ups will be limited to seven sailors, while an all-female crew can number eleven. But there will be various combinations in between, such as seven men and two women. Two veterans of the race, two-time winner Phil Harmer and Abby Ehler, debate the new rules and consider what the best combination would be. When Spain's Carolina Marin won badminton gold at the Rio Olympics it was a landmark moment for her country and for the sport. Never before had a woman from outside of Asia won the Olympic title. Marin tells how she abandoned flamenco dancing for badminton and became the world's best. The quest is on to become the first rider to take a motor cycle past the 400 miles an hour mark, with recent attempts taking place in the American state of Utah. But land speed records aren't limited to motorcycles and cars. We've been to the 'Straight-liners' event in the north of England - featuring plenty of weird and wonderful machines.
