Dr. Charles Camosy on Current Trends in Bioethics

To say the least, bioethics is controversial. Many in the mainstream movement reject the sanctity and equal dignity of human life around issues such as abortion, assisted suicide, and biotechnology. But there is a robust pushback against such approaches—a human dignity bioethics, if you will—that promotes medical ethics and public health policies that align with the “do no harm” ethic of the Hippocratic Oath. The differences in these approaches impact our very understanding about the meaning and importance of human life. How do these distinctions play are among the most important and contentious controversies of the day. To get a handle on the current bioethics landscape, Wesley interviewed one of the most impressive and energetic defenders of human exceptionalism in bioethics today. Charles C. Camosy, Ph.D, is a Professor of Medical Humanities at the Creighton University School of Medicine and holds the Monsignor Curran Fellowship in Moral Theology at St. Joseph Seminary in New York. Before that, he spent 14 years in Fordham University's theology department. Among other places, his articles have appeared in the American Journal of Bioethics, Journal of Medicine and Philosophy, Journal of the Catholic Health Association, New York Times, Washington Post, New York Daily News and America magazine. He has monthly columns with Religion News Service and Angelus, writes a bimonthly feature piece for The Pillar, and does regular Q&As for OSV News. He is the author of eight books with two on the way. Peter Singer and Christian Ethics (Cambridge) was named a 2012 “best book” with ABC Religion and Ethics; Beyond the Abortion Wars (Eerdmans), was a 2015 award-winner with the Catholic Media Association; Resisting Throwaway Culture (New City) was named 2020 “Resource of the Year” by the Catholic Publishers Association. He also penned Losing Our Dignity: How Secularized Medicine is Undermining Fundamental Human Equality. Dr. Camosy is also the founding editor of a new book series with New City Press called The Magenta Project. In addition to advising the pro-life commission of the Archdiocese of New York and receiving the 2018 St. Jerome Award for scholarly excellence from the Catholic Library Association. Camosy is a proud knight of the St. Peter Claver Society. He and his wife Paulyn have four children, three of whom they adopted from a Filipino orphanage in June of 2016. Well guys if you are currently multi - tasking this is your warning you may become completed distracted and absorbed in this episode.    I recently sat down with Meg Reilly from the Magenta Project. An inspiring story, about a collective of  passionate people committed to developing pathways and generating opportunities for more equity and inclusion in sailing, leading with gender. Meg shares how she and others work with a wide range of individuals and organisations to make a positive and progressive impact on the sport, from grassroots initiatives to partnerships with international events and leagues.  Established by the sailors of the successful campaign of Team SCA in the Volvo Ocean Race 2014-2015, Meg shares the challenges and how the concept was embraced with early uptake of sponsors blind spot. The sporting side of boating has similar goals and big dream like me, that include increased participation, and I loved hearing their strategies of how they are also striving to reach gender parity in  sport — equal pay and equal play. Boating is not just for the rich and famous as I say every episode. And today I am spending time with the person and the front of helm who is carving up swell and paving the sandy pathways for more diversity and inclusion across the board. TMP have just release a great article that shares their success.  Breaking Waves and Barriers: Magenta Project Sailors Join the 12th Round Hainan Regatta 2023 All-female Team - The Magenta Project   You can find more information about Meg and the Home - The Magenta Project If you would like to know more about the upcoming events for 2024, then jump over to my website and subscribe to the newsletter to receive your personal invitations when events are announced.    www.theboatprincess.com

Diffusé le 8 mars 2022 Générique : Fast and wild/EdRecords Post-production : Julien Badoil/Studio Juno

Abby Ehler - sailing, surviving and thriving in round-the-world yacht racing

If you think about sailing a yacht round the world, what image comes into your mind? Fantastic sunsets, calm seas, whales and dolphins appearing intermittently, and balmy days in a bikini? Yep, me too. The reality of round-the-world ocean racing is somewhat different: I’m sure the wildlife encounters can be pretty special and there are no doubt some spectacular sunsets, but yachts sail 24/7 during their legs at sea and the Volvo Ocean Race is well-known to be one of the toughest sporting events in the world. It is certainly the longest, and involving 9 months at sea, enormous physical and mental human challenge and a daily battle against the elements. Yacht racing is also one of the few sports where men and women compete alongside one another, although it has traditionally been a male-only domain, and for centuries it was considered bad luck to take a woman to sea on your boat.  Times are fortunately changing, and my guest this week is Abby Ehler, now veteran of 3 Volvo Ocean Races, including this year’s voyage, where she was part of Team Brunel that placed third overall after a gruelling 9 months of sailing. Abby was previously the boat captain for Team SCA, the first all-female team to compete for 12 years when they took part in the Volvo Ocean Race in the 2014-15 competition. Over 250 women applied for 15 spots on that boat, so clearly there is an appetite for women to compete at the very highest levels within the sport. Off the back of Team SCA, the Magenta Project was founded to promote and encourage women at the top end of sailing. Abby is now their Director of Media and Events. in addition to being a mum to her son and racing regularly both at home and abroad.  In this interview we disuss: -How Abby got into sailing - What the Volvo Ocean Race entails - Her hairiest and scariest adventures - How changes to the rules of sailing this year helped more women to be involved at the highest levels - The establishment of the Magenta Project and their support of women in elite sailing - The future of the sport, including the Volvo Ocean Race and Abby's hopes for women in sailing in the years to come Abby is on Twitter @trimore and Instagram @abbyehler and you can find the Magenta Project on social media @themagentaproj. Their website is www.themagentaproject.org More info on the Volvo Ocean Race can be found at www.volvooceanrace.com and if you're interested in getting started in sailing then the best place to go is the RYA website www.rya.org.uk  Enjoy!

NOTE: This podcast is presented as a collaboration with Synthtopia.com for the presentation of people designing and implementing synthesizers. You can listen to the podcast here, on the Synthtopia website (in an embedded player) or on iTunes. But you can also read the article as well as search for information by viewing the transcription available here: http://www.synthtopia.com/content/2017/06/25/neural-audio-synthesis-with-google/ I first got to know the Magenta Project at Google when I heard a podcast with Douglas Eck. I subsequently interviewed him for my podcast, where we talked about using machine learning to do interesting work with composition. This led to an invite to meet with the team, and I got a great introduction to their work at their Mountain View headquarters, and first got to me this week's guest, Jesse Engel. But something interesting happened a few months ago: I got blindsided by the project when they put up details on their 'NSynth' project. This effort is about using machine learning for music, but not for composition - but rather for sound design. Somehow, I never saw that coming, but it really makes a lot of sense, and it comes up with some pretty interesting results. As part of this series on Synthesizer Design we've talked to people about their past work in synth design. But it is interesting to also talk to someone about the future of synthesis, how computers might be brought into play to enhance the sound design functions, and how machine learning can drive (and/or be driven into managing) massive parameter sets. Jesse Engel breaks things down for us in this talk, and we get a chance to see how big the datasets are, how all of this data might be managed, and how he goes about wrangling a bunch of scientists and statisticians into working with sound. Sometimes the work is as expected (a "better violin"), and sometimes not (the "cat flute"). It's a crazy ride, and I hope you learn as much as I did about one of the future possibilities for synth design. Enjoy!

Douglas Eck and the Magenta Project first came onto my radar by doing a podcast that was posted on the Web Audio API Weekly email, and I found his discussion about music and machine learning to be compelling and focused. I reached out to him, and things came together quickly: he invited me to Google for a visit with his team, and also got the planning into motion for this podcast. Once it cleared all the hurdles, we were on! We didn't have a lot of time, but it is clear that Douglas is experienced in presenting the Magenta team's vision "in the time allotted" - whatever that time might be. He certainly packed a lot of information into the small amount of time I was able to talk to him. Trying to understand how machine learning can work within a musical environment - as well as how it can draw musicians in, rather than pushing them away - is something I'd never considered, but it is clear that this is a big part of how the team is imagining their work. If you are interested in musical machine learning as a concept, you'll want to check out the Magenta project at its website, and also get some basic machine learning education wherever you can find it. Hearing about the successes that Google has had with "deep learning" and "reinforcement training" is pretty interesting, and it is exciting to watch this stuff develop from the ground floor. Want to get involved? The Magenta project is open-source, and is actively interacting with artists and art-tech folks as they are able. Start by reading their site, test-driving their tooling from Github and learning more along the way. Enjoy!
