In this powerful and introspective episode of The Mark Haney Show, I sit down with Krista Bernasconi—Mayor of Roseville, founder of MarketSharePR, U.S. Navy veteran, entrepreneur, and community leader. Krista shares her “cheat code” for success, built around discipline, early mornings, and a relentless commitment to service. We dive into what it takes to lead one of California's fastest-growing cities while running a thriving business and raising a strong family.
Can even the most cynical be saved? With the Christmas season upon us, this week's episode features special guest Eddie Bernsconi (Jimmy's brother) to examine the continuing relevance of Terry Zwigoff's 2003 black comedy 'Bad Santa'.
Life admin often refers to the overwhelming and mundane paperwork that surrounds contemporary living. However, Oriana Bernasconi, a sociology professor at the Alberto Hurtado University in Chile, joins Uncommon Sense to talk about a more serious side of the term – that of paperwork documenting human rights abuse – as well as a living, breathing archive and the analogue spreadsheet.Author of “Resistance to Political Violence in Latin America: Documenting Atrocity”, Oriana talks about her substantial research in human rights archives documenting the atrocities that took place during the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile. She also talks us through “technologies of memory” and how archives have allowed the living to connect with the dead.Plus: Oriana introduces us to the works of Judith Butler and Jacques Derrida around performativity and gives her pop culture recommendation for the 16-part TV series “Una historia necesaria”.Guest: Oriana BernasconiHosts: Rosie Hancock, Alexis Hieu TruongSeries Executive Producer: Alice BlochEpisode Guest Producer: Emma HoultonSound Engineer: David CracklesMusic: Joe GardnerArtwork: Erin AnikerFind more about Uncommon SenseEpisode ResourcesRosie, Alexis and Oriana recommendedWINHANGANHA – film by Jazz MoneyInside/Out: A Prison Memoir – theatre production by Patrick KeatingUna Historia Necesaria – TV series by Hernán CaffieroBy Oriana BernasconiResistance to Political Violence in Latin America: Documenting AtrocityPolitical Technologies of Memory: Uses and Appropriations of Artefacts that Register and Denounce State Violence (co-authored with Elizabeth Lira and Marcela Ruiz)Archives of Violence: Case studies from South America (co-authored with Vikki Bell, Jaime Hernández-García and Cecilia Sosa)From The Sociological ReviewThe aesthetics of memory: Ruins, visibility and witnessing – Margarita PalaciosThe digital writing of human rights narratives: Failure, recognition, and the unruly inscriptions of database infrastructures – Josh BowsherFurther resourcesthe publications of the Tecnologías Políticas de la Memoria project“Documenting Dictatorship: Writing and Resistance in Chile's Vicaría de la Solidaridad” – Vikki Bell“Documentality: Why it is Necessary to Leave Traces” – Maurizio Ferraris“Performative Acts and Gender Constitution: An Essay in Phenomenology and Feminist Theory” – Judith ButlerRead more about the concept of Speeach Acts, as well as the work of Michel Foucault, Hannah Arendt and Jacques Derrida.Support our work.

This month on Shirley Robertson's Sailing Podcast we preview the 37th America's Cup, as the city of Barcelona readies for what promises to be one of the most exciting editions of the famous trophy.Five Challengers are set to battle it out on the fastest foiling monohulls ever built, as they go head to head in the Louis Vuitton Cup, in a fight to take on the Defender, the current holder of the trophy, Emirates Team New Zealand.Robertson talks to representatives from all six of the Cup teams, chatting to team members with a wide range of roles, to get a real insight from across the fleet into what to expect come race day.In this edition, Part One, Robertson kicks off with Emirates Team New Zealand naval architecht, Dan Bernasconi, the brains behind the AC75, the foiling mono-hull that all six teams have built for this edition. With all six AC75s now blasting around the waters off Barcelona at speeds of up to fifty knots, Bernasconi discusses some of the differences between the race boats, as well as discussing changes to the rules for this edition, and the issues that the lumpier sea state off Barcelona may bring.Robertson also then talks to Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli's port-side helm, Francesco Bruni, helming partner to Jimmy Spithill in the last Cup, the pair that pioneered the dual-helm setup now favoured by all of the America's Cup teams. While at Luna Rossa, Robertson also caught up with match racing guru Philippe Presti, to take a look at how the increased manoeuvrability of the version two AC75s may lead to more engagement and closer racing as the Challenger Series kicks off.Robertson then heads to AC37 HQ, to catch up with Abby Ehler, the offshore sailing legend and sailing logistics supremo now tasked with delivering the Youth and Women's editions of the America's Cup. Twelve teams will compete in the AC40 race boats for both the UniCredit Youth America's Cup and the Puig Women's America's Cup, the youth event making a return to the regatta after a break in AC36 due to covid travel restrictions. This is however the very first time a women's regatta will take place at the America's Cup, a first that is heralded as a landmark event in sailing's long road to gender equality. This edition of the podcast is in two parts - in part two Robertson catches up with representatives of the remaining four teams.Support the Show.
"Masters Of The Air" premiered on Apple TV+ at the beginning of the year, earning strong reviews for its storytelling, performances, and incredible craftsmanship, rightfully earning its place alongside the legendary WWII miniseries "Band of Brothers" (2001) and "The Pacific" (2010). Based on the 2007 book by Donald L. Miller, the show follows the actions of the 100th Bomb Group, a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bomber unit in the Eighth Air Force in eastern England during World War II. Actor Callum Turner, who plays Major John "Bucky" Egan, Visual Effects Supervisor Xavier Matia Bernasconi, and Virtual Production Executive Steve Jelly were all kind enough to spend some time talking with us about their work on the show. Please be sure to check out the limited series, which is available to stream in full on Apple TV+ and is up for your consideration in all Emmy categories. Thank you, and enjoy! I felt that I was drawn more to the end of the pipeline, more to the beginning of the pipeline, so I was more drawn into lighting and compositing." Virtual production was the most logical choice for Masters of the Air due to logistical, budgetary and creative reasons. Virtual production is still in its infancy with lots of room for technological development. Extraction of foreground elements from LED screens is an important area of research. Virtual production fosters real-time collaboration and creativity compared to traditional segmented workflows. However, on-set experience and mentorship is still crucial. Actors appreciate virtual production as it helps their performances by providing interactive environments rather than pure green screen. His recent projects include Masters of the Air, Mad Max Furiosa and Godzilla x Kong.

L., Engert, V., Puhlmann, L., Linz, R., Caldairou, B., Bernasconi, A., Bernasconi, N., Bernhardt, B. C., Singer, T. Abstract: The hippocampus forms a central modulator of the HPA-axis, impacting the regulation of stress on brain structure, function, and behavior. The current study assessed whether three different types of 3-months mental training modules geared towards nurturing a) attention-based mind-fulness, b) socio-affective skills, or c) socio-cognitive abilities may impact hippocampal integrity by reducing stress. We evaluated mental training-induced changes in hippocampal subfield vol-ume and intrinsic functional connectivity, based on resting-state fMRI connectivity analysis in a group of healthy adults (N=332). We then related these changes to changes in diurnal and chronic cortisol levels. We observed increases in bilateral cornu ammonis volume (CA1-3) fol-lowing the 3-months compassion-based module targeting socio-affective skills (Affect module), as compared to socio-cognitive skills (Perspective module) or a waitlist cohort that did not un-dergo an intervention. Structural changes were paralleled by increases in functional connectivity of CA1-3 when fostering socio-affective as compared to socio-cognitive skills. Moreover, train-ing-related changes in CA1-3 structure and function consistently correlated with reduction in cortisol output. In sum, we provide a link between socio-emotional behavioral intervention, CA1-3 structure and function, and cortisol reductions in healthy adults. Copy rights belong to original authors. We all have those dreams of riding every single day.We sit at work, look out the window and think “Wow. Today would be amazing to go riding."Then we go back to work and push it out of our minds…And that is where most people stop pursuing their dreams! If you don't push for riding 60 days a year but you dream about doing it, then you are smothering your chances of actually doing it. Who told you to dream small? When did you begin telling yourself you aren't a dreamer? Why did you begin listening to your negative thoughts or better yet “Reality” (HUGE AIR QUOTES HERE PEOPLE). You have the potential to ride 60, 70, 80, or 100 days out of the year if you want to! The only person holding you back is… Yup you guessed it (or maybe not and blamed the weatherman) is YOU!Today is a treat. Dropping important matters in his life to sit down and record a podcast was nothing but special and we are deeply grateful. Aaron Bernasconi (don't ask how I pronounced it) looked out that window and decided to do something more with his life than just dream about riding. HE WENT OUT RIDING! More days than most too in the beginning. From the rental fleet to the hard-to-get-because-of-covid fleet on his show room floor, Aaron is surrounded by the things he loves and he breaks down his thoughts when it came to working inside the industry. Aaron is a normal guy with normal problems, however, he stopped being normal when he decided to push himself to the next level. The America's Cup has long been at the cutting edge of yacht racing and we've seen incredible development over the last decade or so and a lot of that has to do with Dan Bernasconi. Dan is head designer at Emirates Team New Zealand and played a large hand in things like the evolution of foiling in the America's Cup, the use of cyclors on Team New Zealand's boat for the Bermuda campaign in 2017 as well as the design of the AC75 monohulls used in the last edition in Auckland. Dan's route to the America's Cup came via Formula 1, and he talks about the six years he spent with McLaren when they were at the top of the tree, how he then got into the sailing game and how he approaches boat design. He also delves into some of the major developments he's been behind, the team's thinking around when to reveal to rival teams some of the latest innovations they've been working on and what it's like when some of the radical design features come off.
