Stefan told us about his time as a youth player at Rangers FC whilst Robbie spoke about his work with Aberdeen FC first team. Both guests also gave us some great answers to our usual Football Journals questions. * I mentioned in the episode I went through School Brian " Soapy" Cameron when in fact I meant school football. In boys league/soccer 7s I must have conceded 30+ goals to him with his new elgin and boys league teams. I'm happy to rectify mistakes after recording and also thank Brian for his contribution to Elgin over his career *I also mentioned that bielsa was in charge whilst Riquelme was at Villarreal when in fact it was Pellegrini Check out Robbies Podcast Changing Room Chat also! Die Pressekonferenz mit Cheftrainer Dino Toppmöller nach dem Auswärtsspiel in Aberdeen.
The 1960s were a tumultuous, but crucial period in the development of professional soccer in the United States and Canada - with teams from Scotland, of all places, playing a particularly interesting role. The dividing line for the modern North American pro game, of course, was the breakthrough, near-live (two-hour-delayed) NBC-TV network telecast of the 1966 World Cup final between eventual champion England and West Germany - the first-ever national standalone broadcast of the sport. Prior to that watershed, it was sports entrepreneur Bill Cox's International Soccer League that imported full major European & South American teams to play in a senior-level competition in largely East Coast urban centers and first-generation immigrant communities. Among the ISL's regulars were three Scottish sides - including Kilmarnock FC, which played four seasons and made the 1960 final. Immediately after the World Cup, no fewer than three groups of eager sports owners sought to launch a full-fledged domestic North American league; by 1967, two competing circuits bowed - including a hastily-assembled United Soccer Association, featuring full-team ISL-like imports - but under noms de plume of North American cities. Front and center were Scottish stalwarts Aberdeen FC - masquerading as the District of Columbia's "Washington Whips." UK football writer Mark Poole ("99 Iconic Moments in Scottish Football: From the Famous to the Obscure, Scotland's Glorious, Unusual and Cult Games, Players and Events") tells us the stories behind these two curious Scottish contributions to US pro soccer history. + + + SPONSOR THANKS: DraftKings Sportsbook (promo code: GOODSEATS): https://myaccount.draftkings.com/login BUY/READ EARLY & OFTEN: "99 Iconic Moments in Scottish Football: From the Famous to the Obscure, Scotland's Glorious, Unusual and Cult Games, Players and Events" (2023) FIND & FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill Instagram (+ Threads): https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable

In this episode David Cran, Managing Director of MintBox Removals discusses how he got involved within the industry only 5 years ago, but the seed of being a remover was potentially sowed much earlier on in life. David's life as a remover didn't start according to plan, a night out on the town ended early after an accident with a taxi, which resulted in David being hospitalised and on crutches for several weeks! MintBox Removals is based in Edinburgh and provides predominantly domestic removals, packing and storage services (mostly via third party storage companies), running 3 x Luton Vans and 1 x HGV (recently purchased from Richard Webster at Tonks - Listen to Richard's episode here (https://www.movingmatterspodcast.co.uk/21)). David's challenges have been, his personal accident at the start of his removal life, Covid and the stamp duty holiday, and growing the business. The one thing David would change from his relatively short time in the moving industry is to have spent a couple of years gaining experience while working for a large Edinburgh based mover. David's highpoints of being within the industry are, moving several Aberdeen FC footballers, being involved with the Ireland RFU during the Six Nations, being the ‘kitman's assistant' as David puts it, and purchasing the HGV. David wouldn't change a great deal overall within the industry but would like to see the conveyancing system making use of Proptech (property technology). The advice David would give himself just starting out within the industry again, apart from look right and left when crossing the road, would be connecting, and communicating with other movers earlier, and to enjoy the process. In the next 5 years David would like to go down the route of palletised storage, an industrial warehouse to operate from and an additional HGV. Industry wise, David see's more use of the demountable body system, ran by several companies currently. Outside of the industry David enjoys family time with his two children, and gardening, in which David has developed a passion for lawn care! And as always we end Moving Matters with four, yes four funny moving stories, an April Fool's prank, a famous Irish Comedian, an attic incident, and the CEO of Hibernian FC. Enjoy! Mike Elder interviews John Greensmyth, a ‘cancer veteran', reflects with his wife, Alison, on the brain freeze that can happen during consultations with medical staff and explores the amazing contribution made to the development of MRI scanners by an Aberdeen University research team. Among the points of interest covered in this episode are the following: Erica Banks, Communications Lead for Friends of ANCHOR, provides an update on news and events, beginning by talking about the https://www.friendsofanchor.org/index.php/news/event-will-show-how-money-has-been-spent (‘Supporter Thank You') event on Friday 7 October. In addition, Erica draws attention to various fundraising events that are happening during October, including the https://www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/events/dance-proms-2022 (Aberdeen Dance Proms) that are taking place on Wednesday 5 and Thursday 6 October. [00:59] Mike interviews John Greensmyth, who recently took part in Brave, a fashion show featuring men from the local area who have had to deal with a cancer or haematology diagnosis. John talks about living with cancer for over thirty years and how that ‘roller coaster' ride has affected him and his family. He also describes some ways in which the Brave models supported each other and concludes by highlighting the importance of research and of treating each patient, first and foremost, as a person. (NB An extended version of John's interview will be released as a bonus episode in due course.)[05:25] In this month's foray into the Friends of ANCHOR archives, Mike shares some news stories about various fundraising activities that took place in 1997. Among the items mentioned is a barbecue, dance and raffle which put Tullynessle on the map and the initiative taken by 91 year old Effie Watson, whose ‘goal' was to ‘kick off' an auction for the charity by donating a football, signed by the Aberdeen FC squad, which she had won in a raffle. [20:22] In the ‘Finding the Words' section of this episode, Mike and Alison recall the meeting at which the consultant explained Mike's cancer diagnosis. Despite their best efforts, much of that meeting passed as a blur, so it was extremely helpful that Alison had prepared some questions and then wrote down key points covered in the meeting. [23:44] In the ‘And Finally' section, Mike highlights the fantastic contribution made to cancer diagnosis and analysis by the work of Aberdeen University scientists, who carried out the world's first Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) body scan, thanks to their breakthrough development of spin-warp imaging techniques. [27:48] Suggestions or feedback about the podcast can be sent to foapodcast@freerangepodcasting.co.uk, and Mike's guest in the next episode will be Louise Budge, the Service and Commissioning Project Manager for The ANCHOR Centre, which is currently under construction at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. It's been a few weeks but the boys are back with a great conversation about taking the unconventional path to success. In a world where players are pros at 16 or on the academy trail even younger, Christian Ramirez had to build his own path to professional football. He had no offers coming out of college from MLS or abroad and bet on himself in the lower leagues in the States. It eventually paid off and he made a name for himself at Minnesota United and has since enjoyed success at the national team level and now abroad with Aberdeen FC in Scotland. Christian is a humble guy who has a great chat with the boys about his career, staying ready for the national team, life abroad and making the move at what many would consider a late stage in his career. Check out our Spotify Playlist Follow us on Instagram “Orange Slices” connects the past, present, and future generations of U.S. internationals around our collective soccer story. In the final day of the transfer window, Newcastle United fan and journalist Sean Douglass tells us how Premier League starlet Matty Longstaff has ended up on loan at Aberdeen and what he'll offer. The panel also discuss who could leave Pittodrie today and what is still needed at County. There's also more fawning over Billy Dodds' seemingly unstoppable Inverness in the Championship, and a hat-trick of losses for Cove, Peterhead and Elgin to debrief. On this episode it’s my pleasure to showcase a few tracks from the upcoming Hot Digits Year 7 compilation that’s out at the end of May, and that I have somehow managed to become involved in. I’ve got my contribution, as well as tracks from Andy Buchan, The Velvet Stripes, Stephen Richards and Ross Fitz, all of whom are joining me on what is a truly excellent compilation. I’ve also got new heat from Disco Lust, old heat from Change, George Duke and The Meters and other funky bric a brac. In the second hour I bring you a guest mix from Scottish DJ and music obsessive Ewan Mack. Hailing from Aberdeen but now living in Edinburgh, Ewan's love of music started from an early age when he started to listen to soul, funk and disco in the early 80s. In 1993, Ewan discovered house music after listening to a Graeme Park mix on Pete Tong's essential mix. A pair of belt drive turntables and basic mixer were purchased shortly afterwards and Ewan started DJing at house parties and birthday parties while at University. The belt drives were upgraded to 1210s which he still owns and Ewan continued to play at local nights in Aberdeen. He was a finalist in Cream's search for a resident DJ competition in 2002 just before it closed its doors! While a family and a career have taken over, Ewan still likes to collect a broad range of disco and soulful house-music although the tempo has moderated over the years. He makes regular recordings to share with like-minded music fans and started streaming on twitch during lockdown 2020. He references Graeme Park (fellow Aberdeen FC fan), MAW, Dave Lee, Norman Jay, Dimitri from Paris and Frankie Knuckles as major influencers. Ewan got in touch a while back to share some of his mixes, and as soon as I listened to one I had to invite him to record one for the show. Ewan’s mix is an expert selection of nu-disco delights, sometimes verging into soulful house, lots of reworks of classics, really funky, just what I look for in a guest mix. Big thanks to Ewan for a great mix, and if you like what you hear please head to Ewan’s Soundcloud and check out his other mixes. https://soundcloud.com/ewan-mack I’m back in two weeks bringing you a full on soulful mix from top bloke Iry Sabir - see you then! In the meantime, don’t forget that there’s a treasure trove of great shows to explore on Stream101’s Mixcloud - mixcloud.com/stream101 (PS, I made the rookie error of playing one of the tracks that Ewan dropped in my hour - argh! My bad, but that new Disco Lust tune is so good it deserves to be played twice!) HOUR 1 TRACKLIST Dr Packer - So Ruff, So Tuff (Dr Packer Rework) Change - It Burns Me Up Andy Buchan - Baller Ross Fitz - I Miss Your Love ('85 Mix) The Meters - Funkify Your Life RLP - Do You Believe That Love Will Never Do Without You? Europaspesial! What would you do if you couldn't fail? This was the question Gavin Simpson asked himself around three years ago, before putting the day job to one side and launching his music project Sourfish. The answer was to write songs, and make music that evoked emotion. “What do you Say?”, is an eclectic collection of five songs which were finalised during a busking venture to New York and New Orleans. Accompanied by two podcasts the EP picks up musically where Sourfish left us with the catchy What do you Say? and its poppy Friends vibes. Angel of My Eye takes us somewhere new, a piano based outing it is a raw, emotional song. The EP closes with the sweet, acoustic Neil Young inspired Hey, Hey. Raised in The Highlands of Scotland, Gavin initially picked up the guitar after falling in love with the anthems and melodies of Oasis and the Britpop generation. This opened the doors to their musical influences and led to a fondness of the songwriting talents of The Beatles, Paul Simon and Bob Dylan. Sourfish is Gavin's guitar driven musical act, he writes and arranges all the songs, plays the guitar and provides an occasional vocal. The debut EP Time to Play was accompanied with a debut boxing match. The title track was a finalist in The UK Songwriting competition and selected for placement on reality TV. This was followed up with the single “The Sheep are on Fire”, a tie in with leading Scottish football team Aberdeen FC. Gavin's journey to understand and discover new music includes working as radio DJ promoting breaking music. Most recently this has pivoted to Gavin's 'What do You Say?' podcast sharing the stories of other acts, with guest such as Frank Turner, Amanda Palmer and Bear's Den. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/stephen-connor2/message

Thank you for your interest in the BvB London fan community podcast with the summer break in full force in the Bundesliga and BVB at their annual training camp at Bad Ragaz on today's show we head back to Scotland to get a preview of the 20-21 season that has just kicked off. We share an hour with Duncan Fraser who for the past 18 years has been a director of Aberdeen FC 9 of which were spent as CEO a position which he resigned from in June 2020. He is currently Scotland's FIFA Commissioner and a UEFA delegate. On the show, Duncan gives a rare insight into life at the top of a top tier football club and working Scotland's corner within the not always uncontroversial European governing bodies. A chartered accountant by training, Duncan is a life-long Aberdeen fan and he has been involved with the club as club secretary, operations director, managing director and CEO. During the 17 years at the club, The 'Dons' as Aberdeen are known won the Scottish League Cup in 2014. Aberdeen FC have never been relegated from the top tier of Scottish football and have won the title 4 times, the Scottish cup 7 times and the League cup 6 times. The crowning achievement for the club who play their football at Pittodrie stadium was the 1983/84 UEFA European Cup Winners cup and Super Cup under manager Sir Alec Ferguson. Topics on the show: 1. Introduction to Duncan, how did he come to be in football, his life with Aberdeen FC and what he has learnt from managing a football club. 2. An introduction to Aberdeen FC and Pittodrie stadium, the great players and managers what makes this club unique? What about the fans of the 'Dons' what makes them special? 3. Duncan shares his view on safe-standing and Bundesliga audiences as well as his experience of German football and Borussia Dortmund and the 50+1 form of ownership in Germany. 6. Being Scotland's FIFA commissioner and a UEFA delegate, what direction are the reforms of the governing bodies going? Are the UEFA Nations League and new third tier for clubs the conference 'viable' or is this more watering down of football? 7. Are we likely to see a new competition replacing the Champions League? A Euro 2020, now postponed across Europe, is UEFA out of touch with climate challenges? Should football be doing more in this respect? The football plan that is mentioned in the podcast that influenced the developments at the DFB was a plan developed by former Leeds United manager Howard Wilkinson initially for the FA in 2000 substantial parts of which were implemented according to Wilkinson by the DFB in an article in The Times in March 2012.
