Both spoke about their current roles within the club and how well Elgin have improved under the new management. They also spoke about their roles at previous clubs. Stefan told us about his time as a youth player at Rangers FC whilst Robbie spoke about his work with Aberdeen FC first team. Both guests also gave us some great answers to our usual Football Journals questions. * I mentioned in the episode I went through School Brian " Soapy" Cameron when in fact I meant school football. In boys league/soccer 7s I must have conceded 30+ goals to him with his new elgin and boys league teams. I'm happy to rectify mistakes after recording and also thank Brian for his contribution to Elgin over his career *I also mentioned that bielsa was in charge whilst Riquelme was at Villarreal when in fact it was Pellegrini Check out Robbies Podcast Changing Room Chat also! Die Pressekonferenz mit Cheftrainer Dino Toppmöller nach dem Auswärtsspiel in Aberdeen.
The 1960s were a tumultuous, but crucial period in the development of professional soccer in the United States and Canada - with teams from Scotland, of all places, playing a particularly interesting role. The dividing line for the modern North American pro game, of course, was the breakthrough, near-live (two-hour-delayed) NBC-TV network telecast of the 1966 World Cup final between eventual champion England and West Germany - the first-ever national standalone broadcast of the sport. Prior to that watershed, it was sports entrepreneur Bill Cox's International Soccer League that imported full major European & South American teams to play in a senior-level competition in largely East Coast urban centers and first-generation immigrant communities. Among the ISL's regulars were three Scottish sides - including Kilmarnock FC, which played four seasons and made the 1960 final. Immediately after the World Cup, no fewer than three groups of eager sports owners sought to launch a full-fledged domestic North American league; by 1967, two competing circuits bowed - including a hastily-assembled United Soccer Association, featuring full-team ISL-like imports - but under noms de plume of North American cities. Front and center were Scottish stalwarts Aberdeen FC - masquerading as the District of Columbia's "Washington Whips." UK football writer Mark Poole ("99 Iconic Moments in Scottish Football: From the Famous to the Obscure, Scotland's Glorious, Unusual and Cult Games, Players and Events") tells us the stories behind these two curious Scottish contributions to US pro soccer history. + + + SPONSOR THANKS: DraftKings Sportsbook (promo code: GOODSEATS): https://myaccount.draftkings.com/login BUY/READ EARLY & OFTEN: "99 Iconic Moments in Scottish Football: From the Famous to the Obscure, Scotland's Glorious, Unusual and Cult Games, Players and Events" (2023) FIND & FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill Instagram (+ Threads): https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable

In this episode David Cran, Managing Director of MintBox Removals discusses how he got involved within the industry only 5 years ago, but the seed of being a remover was potentially sowed much earlier on in life. David's life as a remover didn't start according to plan, a night out on the town ended early after an accident with a taxi, which resulted in David being hospitalised and on crutches for several weeks! MintBox Removals is based in Edinburgh and provides predominantly domestic removals, packing and storage services (mostly via third party storage companies), running 3 x Luton Vans and 1 x HGV (recently purchased from Richard Webster at Tonks - Listen to Richard's episode here (https://www.movingmatterspodcast.co.uk/21)). David's challenges have been, his personal accident at the start of his removal life, Covid and the stamp duty holiday, and growing the business. The one thing David would change from his relatively short time in the moving industry is to have spent a couple of years gaining experience while working for a large Edinburgh based mover. David's highpoints of being within the industry are, moving several Aberdeen FC footballers, being involved with the Ireland RFU during the Six Nations, being the ‘kitman's assistant' as David puts it, and purchasing the HGV. David wouldn't change a great deal overall within the industry but would like to see the conveyancing system making use of Proptech (property technology). The advice David would give himself just starting out within the industry again, apart from look right and left when crossing the road, would be connecting, and communicating with other movers earlier, and to enjoy the process. In the next 5 years David would like to go down the route of palletised storage, an industrial warehouse to operate from and an additional HGV. Industry wise, David see's more use of the demountable body system, ran by several companies currently. Outside of the industry David enjoys family time with his two children, and gardening, in which David has developed a passion for lawn care! And as always we end Moving Matters with four, yes four funny moving stories, an April Fool's prank, a famous Irish Comedian, an attic incident, and the CEO of Hibernian FC. Enjoy! Mike Elder interviews John Greensmyth, a ‘cancer veteran', reflects with his wife, Alison, on the brain freeze that can happen during consultations with medical staff and explores the amazing contribution made to the development of MRI scanners by an Aberdeen University research team. Among the points of interest covered in this episode are the following: Erica Banks, Communications Lead for Friends of ANCHOR, provides an update on news and events, beginning by talking about the https://www.friendsofanchor.org/index.php/news/event-will-show-how-money-has-been-spent (‘Supporter Thank You') event on Friday 7 October. In addition, Erica draws attention to various fundraising events that are happening during October, including the https://www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/events/dance-proms-2022 (Aberdeen Dance Proms) that are taking place on Wednesday 5 and Thursday 6 October. [00:59] Mike interviews John Greensmyth, who recently took part in Brave, a fashion show featuring men from the local area who have had to deal with a cancer or haematology diagnosis. John talks about living with cancer for over thirty years and how that ‘roller coaster' ride has affected him and his family. He also describes some ways in which the Brave models supported each other and concludes by highlighting the importance of research and of treating each patient, first and foremost, as a person. (NB An extended version of John's interview will be released as a bonus episode in due course.)[05:25] In this month's foray into the Friends of ANCHOR archives, Mike shares some news stories about various fundraising activities that took place in 1997. Among the items mentioned is a barbecue, dance and raffle which put Tullynessle on the map and the initiative taken by 91 year old Effie Watson, whose ‘goal' was to ‘kick off' an auction for the charity by donating a football, signed by the Aberdeen FC squad, which she had won in a raffle. [20:22] In the ‘Finding the Words' section of this episode, Mike and Alison recall the meeting at which the consultant explained Mike's cancer diagnosis. Despite their best efforts, much of that meeting passed as a blur, so it was extremely helpful that Alison had prepared some questions and then wrote down key points covered in the meeting. [23:44] In the ‘And Finally' section, Mike highlights the fantastic contribution made to cancer diagnosis and analysis by the work of Aberdeen University scientists, who carried out the world's first Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) body scan, thanks to their breakthrough development of spin-warp imaging techniques. [27:48] Suggestions or feedback about the podcast can be sent to foapodcast@freerangepodcasting.co.uk, and Mike's guest in the next episode will be Louise Budge, the Service and Commissioning Project Manager for The ANCHOR Centre, which is currently under construction at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. It's been a few weeks but the boys are back with a great conversation about taking the unconventional path to success. In a world where players are pros at 16 or on the academy trail even younger, Christian Ramirez had to build his own path to professional football. He had no offers coming out of college from MLS or abroad and bet on himself in the lower leagues in the States. It eventually paid off and he made a name for himself at Minnesota United and has since enjoyed success at the national team level and now abroad with Aberdeen FC in Scotland. Christian is a humble guy who has a great chat with the boys about his career, staying ready for the national team, life abroad and making the move at what many would consider a late stage in his career.
