It was a vintage Thursday night across Europe, in which big-league clubs dropped like flies, and underdogs had some exceptional performances. We start out examining the big upsets, including PAOK's instant-classic thriller in Lille, Go Ahead Eagles' historic win over Villa, and AEK Larnaca pulling a shock in South London. We also debate the day's many controversial VAR moments, which favored Fenerbahce over Stuttgart and propelled Rayo Vallecano to the latest of equalizers at Häcken. Why is VAR usage so inconsistent, unpredictable, and frankly, incompetent, in these competitions — more so than any domestic league? Then in a whip-around segment, we celebrate Lincoln Red Imp's first ever major European tournament win, throw the usual shade at hapless Nice, and lament that Scottish sides occupy the bottom spot of both tables. Finally, we do some table takeaways, look ahead to the next match-day, and make some bold (or stupid) predictions. Cheers to Juanjo Bezares!

00:50:17 - Salonic - OK - PAOK.

Can a win be described as "routine" when it's your first in more than a year? If so, that's what 'Ruud's unbeaten interim Reds' achieved on Thursday night at Old Trafford. Amad Diallo was the clear stand-out performer, first breaking the deadlock with a looped header from a searching Fernandes cross. He made the second himself with persistent pressing, a strong run, and a sharp finish. 2-0, job done. That's not to say it was all plain sailing; van Nistelrooy was not pleased with the first-half performance and demanded better in the second. His time as manager will end with the Leicester game on Sunday but it remains to be seen if he will leave the club altogether. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

#767 A one-all draw against Chelsea at Old Trafford, given the context over the past week isn't so bad, although interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooij will rue some poor finishing. That has been one of the major stories of the season. Once again United created chances, taking 11 shots but missed four 'big chances' as defined by Opta. It's a challenge that incoming Head Coach Ruben Amorim has to fix.Ed and Dan discuss and then look ahead to Thursday night's game against PAOK.If you are interested in supporting the show and accessing exclusive bonus episodes, check out our Patreon page or subscribe on Apple Podcasts Subscriptions. Ruben Amorim has been officially confirmed as the next manager, or 'head coach', of Manchester United. He will start work on Monday November 11th, coincidentally the day of our live show at Manchester's Lowry Theatre! We're making sure, as we did with Ralf Rangnick, that we leave no stone unturned when it comes to learning how to pronounce Ruben Amorim. Is the media's very positive take on the Portuguese matched by fan sentiment? One thing is for sure, he has a big job in front of him. The man who now has most influence on how big that job will be is Ruud van Nistelrooy. The caretaker followed a good Carabao Cup win with a dull draw at home v Chelsea, which must be followed by victory over PAOK on Thursday night. Learn more about your ad choices.
