Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
Are the San Francisco Giants being underrated again? Yes, they lost Buster Posey, Kris Bryant, and Donovan Solano, but this hasn't been a lineup that was totally dependent on anyone. Many are concerned about their lineup against lefties, but they feature some of the game's best hitters vs. LHP over the last couple seasons like Austin Slater, Darin Ruf, and Wilmer Flores. They're not Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, and Trea Turner (not by a long shot), but somehow, they've been able to produce like them. It's a balanced attack with the SF Giants. They're one of just two teams that's been in the top five in non-pitcher wRC+ vs. both lefties and righties since 2020. Digging deeper into the numbers, 85% of those plate appearances went to players other than Posey, Bryant, and Solano. And Bryant, for what it's worth, actually was a drag on their numbers against lefties in his brief time in San Francisco. People also expected this Giants team to struggle defensively in 2021, but the opposite was true. They were one of the better defensive teams in the league, and their worst defenders are no longer here (Bryant and Alex Dickerson). Bryant combined for minus-8 outs above average at third base and in right field. For seven years and $182 million, he's the Rockies' defensive problem now. A signature of the Farhan Zaidi Era in San Francisco has been the breakout performer. In 2019 it was Mike Yastrzemski and Alex Dickerson. In 2020, it was Kevin Gausman, Darin Ruf, and others. In 2021, LaMonte Wade Jr. and Logan Webb. Who's it going to be in 2022? Thairo Estrada jumps off the page as someone who may be primed for a breakout season. He hits for contact, he recently showed that he can hit for power, he's athletic, and he can move all around the diamond. He's only 26 years old. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listeners about the state of the SF Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are: Who do you think is the most likely player to have a breakout year? Is it worth making a deal for Cedric Mullins? Also, if the Yankees can't come to terms with Aaron Judge, would you go after him? What is it that the Giants are unwilling to do that other teams are in order to land top free agents? Is it the number of years we are willing to offer, or the AAV, or do we simply have a payroll cap given to us by ownership? Or do players simply just not want to sign here? Why don't they care about right handed power hitters? Patrick Bailey is obviously Farhan Zaidi's type of catcher, and after a slow start last year, he finished off the year strong and gained the team's confidence that they made the right choice drafting him . Do you think he's the catcher of the team's future over Joey Bart? Do you really think we could trade for another catcher? or a far-fetched pipe dream? Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses the state of the San Francisco Giants outfield. This was a trouble spot in the last few years under the old regime, and it seemed that Farhan Zaidi had done a nice job of rejuvenating those three positions with the emergence of Mike Yastrzemski, Alex Dickerson, Austin Slater, and Darin Ruf. However, following down years from most of that group, Zaidi and the Giants may be in the hunt for an upgrade in the outfield again. Dickerson was DFA'd recently. Thankfully, LaMonte Wade Jr.'s emergence helped offset the poorer performance from other outfielders. Ben also looks at third base, where Evan Longoria is a borderline platoon candidate thanks to his continued struggles against same-handed pitching.Follow & Subscribe to the Locked On Giants Podcast on these platforms
Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick asks the question: What's the holdup with the San Francisco Giants' potential signings of Alex Wood and Alex Cobb? Multiple reputable reporters have said in recent days that the Giants were in the final stages of hammering out a deal, so why hasn't anything been announced? Have those potential deals hit a snag, or are the Giants trying to work out a 40-man move to make room ahead of announcing the signing(s)?Assuming those deals get done, Ben looks at where the Giants' 2022 payroll would stand, and compares it to recent years' payrolls. Ben opines that the Giants would still have $40 to $80 million to spend on 2022 payroll alone, putting the Giants in a very enviable position. Especially when we consider that their team would be mostly filled out at that point. They'd have four solid starters in Logan Webb, Anthony DeSclafani, Wood, and Cobb, a mostly complete bullpen, and a solid, platoon-heavy lineup. There are definitely areas that could stand to be upgraded, and they'd still need multiple starting pitchers, but the Giants would be in a great position with most of the free agent class's stars still available, and tons of money available to spend. Finally, Ben discusses the announcement yesterday that the Tender Deadline was moved up to Nov. 30, in order to give some breathing room ahead of a potential lockout starting on Dec. 2. The Tender Deadline was supposed to occur on that date. This is good news for all involved, as it will give non-tendered players a few days to explore their markets and potentially lock in deals ahead of a lockout. The Giants, though, figure to tender contracts to almost all of their arbitration-eligible players. Alex Dickerson seemed like a lock to be non-tendered, but he was DFA'd when they announced the DeSclafani signing. The only possibility to be non-tendered appears to be John Brebbia, though he's a borderline case at a predicted arbitration salary of only $1 million, considering his strong major league track record.Follow & Subscribe to the Locked On Giants Podcast on these platforms
Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick details the San Francisco Giants' three-year agreement with free-agent starter Anthony DeSclafani. Desclafani was a driving force behind the Giants' miraculous 107-win season in 2021, and he's back on a $36 million deal that's now the largest handed out by Farhan Zaidi in his tenure as Giants president of baseball operations. Rumors have been swirling about other starters as well, with multiple reporters stating that the Giants are finalizing a two-year deal to bring back Alex Wood, and that the Giants are in deep discussions with Alex Cobb. They were also linked to starter Steven Matz in recent days. If the Giants finalize deals for one or two of those additional starters, Ben loves where the Giants would stand from a payroll and talent perspective. They'd still have tons of money to spend just to reach last year's payroll, which they could probably blow past if they wanted to. That would allow them to wait out the markets for top starters like Kevin Gausman and Max Scherzer, or pivot to position players like Marcus Semien, Corey Seager, Carlos Correa, and Trevor Story. They have roster and financial flexibility, and figure to be among the most aggressive teams in all of baseball this winter.Ben disucsses the roster casualties of the Giants' recent move. Alex Dickerson was DFA'd yesterday to make room for DeSclafani, and his role in helping to transform the Giants will not soon be forgotten. Jay Jackson, a popular reliever from last season, was traded to the Braves for cash and a player to be named later or cash. Jackson had been DFA'd on Friday to make room for the Giants' 40-man additions that protected them from selection in the Rule 5 Draft.Follow & Subscribe to the Locked On Giants Podcast on these platforms
Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick names five San Francisco Giants he doesn't expect to be back in 2022. The first is Kris Bryant, which is sure to be a controversial take among Giants fans. While Ben acknowledges that Bryant is a very good player, there are several reasons to think he won't be wearing orange and black in 2022 and beyond. He's likely to have a robust market, and Scott Boras clients often don't sign until late in the offseason. The Giants aren't likely to wait around for Bryant, whose performance with the club was good but not great after he was acquired in a midseason trade. Ben also names Johnny Cueto, Anthony DeSclafani, Alex Dickerson, and Donovan Solano as key players he doesn't expect to be back in 2022 for various reasons.Watch Daily on YouTube http://bit.ly/LOGYouTubeSupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
Some good, some bad, some in between. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick evaluates the 2021 Giants' outfield. In many ways this group was disappointing overall, but there was some good performance and even a legitimate breakout. Mike Yastrzemski followed up his MVP-caliber 2020 with somewhat of a dud in 2021. His offense dipped to mediocre levels, although he continued to play strong defense.Alex Dickerson fell off a cliff and seems like a definite non-tender candidate. Austin Slater seemed to take a step back from 2020, but his numbers clearly indicate he continued to be a force against left-handed pitching. LaMonte Wade Jr. broke out and became Late Night LaMonte. Darin Ruf was a monster at the plate and figure to be back.Overall, the Giants have a ton of flexibility when it comes to their outfield. Not one player is under guaranteed contract, but almost everyone can be retained if the Giants so desire. The one exception is Kris Bryant, who is a free agent, but the Giants have tons of freed up money and can choose to spend some of it on an outfielder if they so desire. Ben names Starling Marte, Chris Taylor, and others among the outfielders the Giants may attempt to sign.Watch Daily on YouTube http://bit.ly/LOGYouTubeSupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses the San Francisco Giants' upcoming NLDS matchup with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Giants announced their playoff roster this morning, and there were a few surprises. Most notably, Johnny Cueto was left off. It's a move that makes sense, but is bound to make Cueto unhappy. Leaving Cueto off the roster gives the Giants another position player to work with, however. Steven Duggar and Alex Dickerson both made it, which will allow Gabe Kapler maximum maneuverability with platoons and pinch-hitting. That's clearly a bigger need and advantage than having an extra long reliever, a role Cueto would have filled. After discussing the Giants' official roster, Ben goes position by position, breaking down whether the Giants or Dodgers have the edge. Finally, he gives his prediction for how this series is going to end up.Watch Daily on YouTube http://bit.ly/LOGYouTubeSupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick attempts to predict the San Francisco Giants' 26-man Division Series roster. The NLDS opens up on Friday, and the Giants will either be facing the Dodgers or Cardinals. Ben discusses who he thinks are locks among position players, starters, and relievers, and then attempts to figure out the remaining additions. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers listeners' questions about the state of the San Francisco Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are:Do you think Kris Bryant will ultimately re-sign with the Giants? Is he worth a $200M+ contract? With lots of one-year deals, some with options and others without them, how much roster turnover do you think we'll have next season? Specifically which players do you think will come back? Which players do you think may choose to sign elsewhere?Do you see Johnny Cueto making the fourth starter spot and Alex Wood taking the long relief spot for the playoffs? Alex Wood's COVID-19 illness has hurt the Giants, as they've had to cover two different spots in the rotation with bullpen games. Among the questions asked and answered are: Are we pretty certain at this point that Logan Webb would be the Wild Card game starter if we ended up in the Wild Card slot? What would the Giants need to do to give Darin Ruf more at-bats? Would they have to move LaMonte Wade to center and take away ABs from Mike Yastrzemski even vs righties, or take away ABs from Alex Dickerson who has been decent at the plate for about a month now? On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick details the San Francisco Giants' 7-2 win and series sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday night. Kevin Gausman started off great, but ended up losing his command in what amounted to another shaky outing. Buster Posey, LaMonte Wade Jr., Brandon Crawford, and Alex Dickerson hit home runs. Prior to the game Johnny Cueto was placed on the IL and Thairo Estrada was recalled. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listeners about the state of the San Francisco Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are: Am I right to have given up on Alex Dickerson and Austin Slater? Do you think poor outfield play (Slater/Dickerson) will result in a call up from Triple-A? Heliot Ramos is the obvious OF we all think of, but Joe McCarthy's OPS is almost 1.000. What pending free agents are returning next season? Sean Hjelle just got promoted to Triple-A yesterday. What do you think is the likelihood we see him make an appearance or even a start in the majors this season, particularly given all the question marks around our rotation right now? The September roster expansion is inexplicably limited to just two additional players this season. Barring injuries, Steven Duggar and Thairo Estrada would seem to be the likely candidates. Do you see them going with a third catcher though? If so, Joey Bart or Chadwick Tromp?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants' resilient 11-8 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night in Phoenix. In the second game of the Kris Bryant era, the Giants jumped out to a 7-1 lead behind a breakout game from struggling outfielder Alex Dickerson, who hit a grand slam. Jay Jackson struggled in relief, but José Álvarez, Tony Watson, and Jarlín García had clutch outings. Ben also discusses the Giants' impending roster crunch.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants' crushing walk-off loss against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Tyler Rogers and John Brebbia coughed up runs, and the Giants blew a 6-1 lead. Alex Dickerson, Mike Yastrzemski, LaMonte Wade Jr, and Thairo Estrada homered, and Alex Wood pitched pretty well, but the bullpen could not hold back LA's bats, and Will Smith hit a walk-off three-run homer in the 9th.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about three things we learned this weekend with the San Francisco Giants. The first thing we learned is that the Giants' bats went quiet in St. Louis, and the outfield is becoming an area of concern. Austin Slater, Alex Dickerson, Mike Tauchman, and Steven Duggar are all going through rough patches. Only Mike Yastrzemski has been productive lately. The second thing we learned is that Kevin Gausman was placed on the family medical emergency leave list, as his wife Taylor was hospitalized due to pregnancy complications. Thankfully, Taylor is doing well and Gausman is scheduled to start Monday in Los Angeles. Logan Webb made Gausman's start on Friday, and he continued to throw the ball really well. The final thing we learned was that Tauchman was activated off the IL, Jay Jackson's contract was selected, Jason Vosler was optioned, and Evan Longoria was placed on the 60-day IL. We also received updates on Aaron Sanchez, Reyes Moronta, and Tommy La Stella, all of whom shouldn't be that far off from returning.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants' statistical rankings in key categories at the All-Star break. The Giants have been one of baseball's best offensive teams, lead by strong seasons from veterans Buster Posey, Brandon Crawford, Evan Longoria, and Brandon Belt. But they've also had help, as the likes of Mike Yastrzemski, Darin Ruf, and Steven Duggar have been very good as well. The Giants have also been a great defensive team, with Mike Tauchman, Crawford, and others leading the way, and they've also had surprisingly good defensive performances from Donovan Solano, Wilmer Flores, and pretty much everyone else, with the possible exception of Alex Dickerson in left field. Darin Ruf and LaMonte Wade Jr. have provided positive defensive value filling in for an injured Belt.On the pitching side, the Giants have been very good overall, led by Kevin Gausman, Anthony DeSclafani, Alex Wood, Tyler Rogers, Jake McGee, and Dominic Leone. One area of weakness has been baserunning, but they've more than made up for it by getting on base, hitting for power (the Giants lead the majors in home runs, isolated power, and slugging percentage), defense, and pitching. Given all of the data, it's no surprise that this team has the best record in baseball at the All-Star break.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick breaks down the San Francisco Giants' disappointing loss to the Cardinals, and takes a look at what to make of the upcoming schedule. Kevin Gausman took a no-hitter into the 7th, but Kwang Hyun Kim ultimately outdueled him as the Giants offense couldn't get anything going against the Cardinals' left-handed starter. Alex Dickerson homered in the 8th, which bodes well for the next two games against right-handed starters. Johnny Cueto starts against Adam Wainwright tonight in a battle of veterans, and Alex Wood takes on a young righty on Wednesday night. The Giants play the Cardinals, Nationals, and Cardinals again in their next three series, and they really ought to take advantage considering they then play the Dodgers and Astros 10 times in 13 games.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants losing their fourth straight game last night, this one to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Johnny Cueto was ill and did not pitch well, allowing five runs in five innings. Alex Dickerson continued to struggle hitting in the middle of the lineup. LaMonte Wade Jr. went hitless again at the top of the order. Is it time to panic about the Giants' first four-game losing streak of the season? Things won't get any easier tonight as they face Zac Gallen, one of the best pitchers in the league. What are the Giants' biggest needs as the trade deadline approaches? Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers listener questions about the San Francisco Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are: Considering big bats like Mike Yastrzemski and Alex Dickerson still haven't gotten it going at the plate, could the Giants pursue a big bat at the deadline? Maybe someone like Joey Gallo. He fits the Farhan profile. Will Farhan Zaidi trade for proven commodities, or for his usual potentially hidden gems? Will team control be a primary consideration for the players he targets? What is your take on these ridiculous home run dugout celebrations? I just watched the Padres put a Flava Flav size SD medallion on Wil Myers for hitting a solo shot...don't get me wrong I'm all for celebration, but can we all just take a page from the giants and keep it classy?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants' rash of injuries. Their lineup in last night's loss to the Dodgers was one of the most inefficient of the Gabe Kapler era. Alex Dickerson started against a lefty, which is very unusual. Jason Vosler, the fifth-string first baseman and another lefty, also started. Things should look a little better tonight with a right-hander on the mound, but unfortunately for the Giants, that right-hander is one of baseball's best pitchers in Walker Buehler.Wilmer Flores should be able to come back on Saturday, which is actually huge for the Giants with two lefties in Julio Urias and Clayton Kershaw finishing out the series for the Dodgers. Ben looks through the upcoming schedule and attempts to address how the Giants will deal with all of their injuries, and whether he thinks they can survive them.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses the San Francisco Giants' 6-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night. Anthony DeSclafani gave up a leadoff home run to Jesse Winker, but that would be the only run the Reds scored against him in seven otherwise superb innings. At the plate, the Giants struck out 17 times, but they grinded against Reds starter Luis Castillo, and Alex Dickerson connected for a clutch three-run home run against him. Brandon Crawford homered in the late innings as well. The Giants' offense as a whole has been thriving the last couple of years with patience and power, and that is nothing but a good thing. As Ben stresses, don't worry so much about the strikeouts. Last night's high total was an outlier, anyway.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses three things we learned this weekend with the San Francisco Giants. The first thing we learned is that the Giants' offense is back. Despite a sluggish start, the Giants are now near the top of the MLB leaderboards in several key categories, including wRC+, isolated power, fWAR, BB/K, and Chase%. Buster Posey, who's leading the major leagues in wRC+, has been a huge reason why the offense has posted overall strong numbers. The second thing we learned is that the Giants' predicted struggles against the Padres were overstated. They've played nine games against a team that was supposed to dominate them, and the Giants are 5-4 in those games. The Giants are also in first place, ahead of the Padres and Dodgers. The third thing we learned is that the Giants made a lot of roster moves. Mike Yastrzemski, Johnny Cueto, Kevin Gausman, and Jarlin Garcia were activated off the injured list. Alex Dickerson and Aaron Sanchez went on the IL. Jason Vosler was optioned to Sacramento.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses the San Francisco Giants' trade for Mike Tauchman, and their disappointing loss to the Rockies on Tuesday night. Tauchman was acquired for left-handed reliever Wandy Peralta and a player to be named later. He figures to play every day against right-handed pitching, and his presence should be a boost to the Giants' lineup and bench. Austin Slater has been starting in center against righties, and he has not done well in that role. Now that Tauchman is in the fold, the Giants can start Alex Dickerson, Tauchman, and Mike Yastrzemski in the outfield against right-handed starters. This also makes their bench deeper because Slater gets added to it, and he can be utilized as a pinch hitter against lefties. The Giants will miss Peralta, but he is replaceable on the roster considering the Giants have three other lefty relievers (Jake McGee, Caleb Baragar, and José Álvarez) on the active roster, one more (Jarlin García) on the 10-day IL, and two others (Sam Selman, Conner Menez) on the 40-man roster.Ben also discusses the Giants' tough loss last night, in which Gregory Santos was a questionable reliever that Gabe Kapler went to in a tie game in the 10th, and he surrendered two home runs that sunk the Giants' chances of winning. Brandon Crawford homered in the 9th to tie the game, but the Giants could not overcome several mistakes and general poor performance by the bullpen.Listen to The Ultimate Mock Draft 2021 presented by Audacy and the Locked On Podcast Network. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick breaks down the last two games of the San Francisco Giants' 3-3 road trip through Miami and Philadelphia. The Giants got shaky starts by Logan Webb and Anthony DeSclafani in their latest two games, but the offense showed resilience and stormed back both times. In the first game, a six-run eighth inning propelled the Giants to victory. Buster Posey homered twice in the game, Alex Dickerson and Wilmer Flores each hit three-run homers in the inning, and Tommy La Stella hit a home run of his own.In the series finale, with the Giants going for a sweep, they fell behind early but then stormed back on a three-run home by Darin Ruf against his former team, and an Alex Dickerson single against a lefty. The Giants bullpen couldn't hold the lead, however, as Camilo Doval gave up a solo home run to Bryce Harper and Wandy Peralta allowed a run in the bottom of the ninth as the Phillies walked off the Giants. Donovan Solano injured his calf in the game and will likely head to the injured list, and Brandon Belt and Brandon Crawford both had minor injuries and had to come out of the game on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.Listen to The Ultimate Mock Draft 2021 presented by Audacy and the Locked On Podcast Network. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
Today on the Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listeners about the state of the San Francisco Giants as the 2021 season gets underway. Among the questions asked and answered are: If the offense keeps struggling, when do you think is a good time to start worrying about it? Should we be concerned about some of the struggling hitters (Brandon Belt, Mike Yastrzemski, etc.)? Small sample size but they've struck out a lot and haven't hit it hard. Are we going to start to see an outfield shuffle if things don't start going as planned? Yastrzemski, Alex Dickerson, and Mauricio Dubón's bats haven't woken up). Do you think part of the problem with Dickerson's poor numbers has to do with his sporadic playing time so far? How long can the Giants survive with three current righties (Matt Wisler, Tyler Rogers, and Reyes Moronta) they have in the bullpen? It's a bit too early to tell I guess, but I wonder what the timeline is to get Moronta back into higher leveraged opportunities. Right-handed pitchers out the 'pen have come out the gates struggling. How long of a leash will Farhan Zaidi/Gabe Kapler have with them before Camilo Doval and others get a shot? How concerning is it that Moronta doesn't have a strikeout to start the season? He's inducing a lot of weak contact at the moment, but I'm not sure how sustainable that is when hitters start to figure out he doesn't have the same fastball he used to have. How aggressive do you think the Giants will be about extending players during the season, given how many roster spots will be open at the end of the season? And who is most likely to get an extension? I'd like to see the Giants extend Kevin Gausman during the season considering they have a lot of money coming off the payroll. Do you think they can, and how much do you think it would be?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
Host Ben Kaspick gets you set for Opening Day on today's Locked On Giants podcast. The San Francisco Giants enter the 2021 season with a sense of cautious optimism, following a 2020 season in which they exceeded expectations by scoring the eight-most runs in baseball and falling just one win short of a playoff berth. Ben breaks down the recently announced 26-man roster and makes predictions about what's in store for the Giants in 2021.He follows that up by discussing the opening series in Seattle against the Mariners. The M's will feature three left-handed starters in this series, meaning the Giants will have guys like Austin Slater, Donovan Solano, Wilmer Flores, and Darin Ruf in their starting lineups, and others like Tommy La Stella, Alex Dickerson, and perhaps Brandon Belt may not be in there to start the game. Kevin Gausman will take the mound for the Giants tonight following a very strong 2020, and he's looking to lead this staff and perhaps pitch his way to a big new contract.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick breaks down the latest from spring training for the San Francisco Giants. First, Ben talks about yesterday's Giants lineup which featured newcomer Tommy La Stella at the top, followed by 2020 breakout star Mike Yastrzemski. Those two figure to be a pesky and formidable 1-2 punch at the top of San Francisco's order this year against right-handed pitchers, and they could be followed by the equally dangerous Brandon Belt and Alex Dickerson.Next, Ben breaks down tonight's starting lineup against the Los Angeles Dodgers, a game which will be televised on NBC Sports Bay Area. The highlight of this lineup is Marco Luciano batting ninth and playing shortstop. Luciano is considered by many to be the Giants' best prospect, and a top-10 prospect in all of baseball. He's just 19 years old and could be just a year or two away from the major leagues. Finally, Ben talks about what to look for overall from the Giants this spring training. The team has several of its top prospects in camp, so it will be fascinating to follow their performance. However, Ben advises that spring training stats, and the team's win-loss record, should not be read into too much. It's a wiser approach to look out for statements from manager Gabe Kapler or front office leaders Farhan Zaidi and Scott Harris when looking for insights about who's standing out in camp.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about Donovan Solano, Alex Dickerson, and very likely Mike Yastrzemski being named among the top 10 players at their respective positions on MLB Network's Top 10 Right Now lists. Solano, Dickerson, and Yastrzemski were all Farhan Zaidi acquisitions at very little cost, and all three have been major bright spots for the Giants. Ben discusses why Zaidi's ability to identify talent bodes very well for the Giants' future, and how Giants fans are extremely lucky that the team is as active and committed to winning as they are, especially when compared to a lot of other teams around the league right now, including the Rockies, who just essentially paid the Cardinals to take star third baseman Nolan Arenado off their hands.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants' New Year's resolutions. While 2020 was a pretty terrible year for humanity and baseball as a whole, the Giants actually had a fairly encouraging season. Their offense was among the best in the game and they were in contention for a playoff berth until the season's final day. Looking ahead to the new year, Ben goes through and sets some goals for the Giants. He hopes for a far more normal season, including being able to go to a game. He reiterates the Giants' goal of making the postseason, or at least being contenders deep into the season again. He also hopes for aggressive minor league development, for the team to finally spend some money, and for Farhan Zaidi to find the next Mike Yastrzemski, Alex Dickerson, or Donovan Solano. One last thing: this time can it please be a starting pitcher?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick looks at some 2021 ZiPS projections for the San Francisco Giants, which were released Monday on FanGraphs by Dan Szymborski. Examined today are the projections for Alex Dickerson, Jason Vosler, Joey Bart, and Darin Ruf. Ben talked at length last year about how projections systems were overly pessimistic about the Giants, and that they were likely to outperform them because of their commitment to platoons and innovative new hitting coaches. And indeed, the Giants massively outperformed their pessimistic 2020 projections almost to a man. Now, the 2021 ZiPS projections are out, and Ben examines whether or not the computer is buying into what the Giants were able to do in the small sample of 2020. As we'll see, the projections are buying into the improvements to an extent, but they're not all-in just yet.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about what the San Francisco Giants did at last night's non-tender deadline. It was predicted to be a non-tender bloodbath across baseball, but it was mostly business as usual, outside of a few surprises. The Giants were among the majors' most active team, non-tendering five players off their 40-man roster, agreeing to one-year deals to avoid arbitration with six, and tendering contracts to two arbitration eligible players. Tyler Anderson, Daniel Robertson, Melvin Adon, Chadwick Tromp, and Rico Garcia were non-tender by the Giants. Donovan Solano and Reyes Moronta were tendered contracts but not yet signed, and the Giants reached one-year deals with Alex Dickerson, Darin Ruf, Austin Slater, Jarlin Garcia, Wandy Peralta, and Trevor Gott.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!
