Israel is taking another look at its security strategy following the restoration of relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Israel had seen Saudi Arabia's anti-Iran stance as a bulwark in its security strategy. And, Iraqi journalist Muntazer al-Zaidi was thrown into the global spotlight in 2008 after hurling his shoes at then-President George W. Bush. Two decades after the US-led invasion of Iraq, we ask Zaidi about his views on the country today. Also, for months now, the fighting in and around the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut has been relentless and deadly. On Sunday, Ukraine's president said the Ukrainian military managed to kill 1,100 enemy soldiers near Bakhmut. Plus, "Naatu Naatu," an award-winning Indian Telugu-language song.

TK is joined by Farhan Zaidi to discuss the Giants offseason. Zaidi feels good about the group they have,There is a lot to optimism in their organization. And the ripple effects of the Carlos Correa situation.
Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
Are the San Francisco Giants really going to be a top home-run-hitting team in 2023? Farhan Zaidi recently said as much, but does his prediction figure to come true? The SF Giants set a franchise record for home runs in 2021, and despite some narrative to the contrary, they weren't a bad power-hitting team in 2022. Their additions of Michael Conforto and Mitch Haniger figure to add many more home runs to the mix, so it's not at all hard to envision the 2023 Giants being a top power-hitting team. Going into Year Five of the Farhan Zaidi era, is it playoffs or bust? Will Zaidi be around for a sixth season if the Giants have another disappointing season in 2023? He probably won't be fired, especially if other things go right, but certainly the rope starts to get a lot shorter. If the Giants have a poor 2023 season and follow it up with one to three more disappointing seasons afterwards, Zaidi might not stick around. But the Giants value continuity, and Zaidi showed in 2021 what he's capable of. Developing young talent will be the most important thing moving forward. What will it take to get Shohei Ohtani next offseason? Reports are that Ohtnai still prefers the West coast, which puts the Giants in a good starting position. Aaron Judge seemingly set the market for superstar players this offseason when he collected $40 million per year over nine years from the Yankees. It's not hard to imagine Ohtani also getting $40 million per year, but he will be a couple of years younger than Judge was at the time of his free agency. In that case, something like 11 years at $40M per year seems possible (that would come out to $440 million in total). Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Three farm laws passed by the Parliament of India in 2020 received major pushback from farmers around the country - with many of them mobilizing in Punjab and heading to the capital New Delhi. The protest site at the border village of Singhu outside Delhi turned into a mini-city of sorts with the Sikh farmers operating community kitchens and serving meals to thousands of people every day, including the policemen watching over the very barricades that restricted their entry into Delhi. In this week's Immigration Law for Tech Startups podcast, I'm joined by Nadia Zaidi our expert on writing-intensive hard cases for startup founders, as we talk all about the L-1 visa and all it entails – the path to the green card, who qualifies and who doesn't, and more. The L-1 visa is for intracompany transferees, including managers, executives, and workers with specialized knowledge. This is an episode for people who already have an operating business in a country besides the U.S. and you need to send people to the US to either start a new business, raise funding for your startup, or open a sales and marketing branch. The L visa is not the first visa type that would come to mind for a founder. But in some cases, a company may already have incorporated an entity abroad, they want to scale and break into the U.S. market but they're not willing to shut down their foreign business. Hence, this is a great option for multinationals. Please share this episode with companies, HR and recruiting professionals, startup founders, international talent, or anyone who can benefit from it. Mkurugenzi Mkuu wa WHO Dkt.

Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
There will be no recovering from this brutal offseason for the San Francisco Giants. Their fans will have permanent scars from how things unfolded with Carlos Correa. And yet, the offseason marches on and soon enough it will be time for pitchers and catchers to report to Scottsdale. In that case, the SF Giants have a lot of work to do. Even when they thought they were signing Carlos Correa, the SF Giants needed to make several additions. One of the most intriguing options remaining on the market is reportedly someone the Giants are interested in: outfielder Michael Conforto. Conforto is not Carlos Correa, but from 2017 to 2020 he was really good and one of the most underrated players in the game. He made a lot of sense for the Giants last offseason, but it turned out he sustained a shoulder injury in January and had season-ending surgery in April. Now Conforto is reportedly healthy and seeking a two-year deal with an opt out. That's right up the Giants' alley, but they could have a hard time convincing a left-handed hitter to come to San Francisco to rebuild value. Conforto, like Carlos Correa, is a Scott Boras client. More details on the Correa situation have emerged, and they're heartbreaking for fans. Correa had his whole family in San Francisco for the press conference that was supposed to be at 11 AM on Tuesday. Three hours before the scheduled presser, Farhan Zaidi called Boras and said there was an issue with the physical and they needed more time. Boras and Zaidi agreed that they would have until 1 PM, at which time Correa would be released from his obligation to the Giants and re-enter the free-agent market if the Giants weren't prepared to execute the 13-year, $350 deal. As 1 PM came and passed, the Giants informed Boras that they were not ready to proceed. Boras then began talking to other teams again, and about 12 hours later, Correa agreed to a 12-year, $315M deal—pending a physical—with the New York Mets. The real losers in this situation are fans of the San Francisco Giants. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Just when you thought that the Giants wouldn't make a big splash, Farhan pulls one out of his hat and signs Carlos Correa to a 13 year, $350 million contract. The Giants finally got their guy.

Last week Syed Muzamil Hasan Zaidi of Thought Behind Things came on The Pakistan Experience (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkMM0u_4cmM) and the podcast has ignited a fiery social media debate. Reluctantly, I have made this video addressing all the controversies surrounding the podcast. It was unrehearsed and unscripted so I forgot to mention that the screenshot is not from a private group chat, it is from the TBT group. I hope this puts all the matters and debates to rest and we can all move on. Did I do a podcast to settle scores? Did I put off the record things in the podcast? Did I say post an out-of-context clip? Here is a TPE daily update addressing all of that.

Shownotes: What is it like to be brought up in a conservative, small town where girls are groomed from their childhood to just be good daughters, wives and mothers? For the 85th episode of The Elephant in the Room podcast I spoke with Tehseen Zaidi, Head Communications, Syngenta India. Growing up in a small town in UP, Tehseen was unlike her peers, she was opinionated and spoke her mind. She was influenced and supported in large measure by her father (her role model) who believed in empowering his girls, enabling them to fly and define their own journey. It was refreshing speaking to Tehseen, she was disarmingly candid - opening up about her personal life, her mantra's to beating the imposter syndrome, her advocacy for gender diversity/women in leadership. We also spoke about
Love Jihad mindset instils predatory behaviour in a Muslim youth to make him hunt for girls from other religions, and to convert them, torture them, and even kill them, such as the Aftab Shraddha case. Tarek Fatah and Amber Zaidi join Sanjay Dixit to discuss and go deeper into the issue.
Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
The San Francisco Giants declined to pick up Evan Longoria's $13 million club option today, releasing the long-time Giants third baseman into true free agency. Longoria had been with the SF Giants since the previous front office traded for the five years left on his contract prior to the 2018 season. It's still possible that the Giants and Longoria reunite, but this decision was essentially saying that the Giants didn't think he was worth an extra $8 million. If the SF Giants bring him back, which is questionable, it'd likely be for a salary in the $2-3 million range. Qualifying offer decisions are also due today. The San Francisco Giants had until 2 PM to decide whether to extend qualifying offers to their eligible free agents. Carlos Rodón was a slam dunk to receive the offer, with Joc Pederson lurking as a possibility as well. Once the Giants extending qualifying offers, which amount to one-year deals that are worth $19.65 million this year, those players who received it have 10 days to decide whether or not to accept. Then, if they sign elsewhere, the Giants would receive Draft compensation. Farhan Zaidi met with reporters as the GM meetings. He discussed numerous topics, and also offered insight into the Giants' plans with LaMonte Wade Jr. Zaidi said that the SF Giants do intend to bring back Wade by offering him a contract ahead of next week's tender deadline. Wade is projected at a very modest salary of about $1.4 million, according to MLB Trade Rumors. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
Bruce Bochy will probably get a statue outside of Oracle Park some day. He means that much to the San Francisco Giants, so the news of him accepting the role of manager with the Texas Rangers last week was shocking, even if it could be seen coming. Bochy read the room and seemingly agreed mutually with the organization that it was time to move on as the club prepared to bring in a new president of baseball operations, a role that ultimately went to Farhan Zaidi. Bochy managed the Giants for one more season, then he "retired." But it was apparent almost right away that Bochy still wanted to manage again someday. Which was a little bit awkward from the SF Giants' perspective. The optics made it appear that Bochy was nudged out the door, which may in fact have some truth to it (but it was seemingly decided before Zaidi was hired, so it was more of an organizational decision than a front office one). Anyhow, what will Bochy bring to Texas? What made him so beloved in San Francisco, aside from simply winning three titles? What enables the San Francisco Giants to win those three championships under Boch? There are a lot of connections between the SF Giants and Texas Rangers these days. Bochy is the new Rangers manager, and Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reported recently that the Rangers plan to make a big push for 2022 SF Giants ace Carlos Rodón. Rodón had a monster season in San Francsico in 2022, and he is certain to opt out of the $22.5M player option for 2023. The Giants have been hesitant to hand out long-term deals to starting pitchers, so it wouldn't be a shock if Rodón doesn't return to the Giants. The same kind of thing happened last year with Kevin Gausman. Former Giants hitting coach Donnie Ecker, who accepted a role as Rangers bench coach and offensive coordinator following the 2021 campaign, is also discussed. Bochy's coaching staff, and whether he'll go with more "old school" vs. "new school" coaches, will be fascinating to watch. Ecker fall firmly in the latter category. Ali Zaidi, the White House's new climate czar, doesn't have the name recognition of his predecessor, Gina McCarthy. But maybe that's the point. McCarthy was instrumental in getting the Inflation Reduction Act, and its billions of dollars for climate projects, through Congress and to President Joe Biden's desk. But now the task turns to getting that money out the door in a quick-but-not-too-quick manner, and the White House thinks Zaidi is the technocrat for the job. On this episode of Parts Per Billion, our environmental policy podcast, we talk about the new national climate adviser with Bloomberg Law reporter Stephen Lee. Lee tells us what Zaidi will be tasked to do and how he'll get it done while working alongside climate officials such as John Kerry, John Podesta, and others. The San Francisco Giants' full-season attendance was down over 8% in 2022 compared to 2019. This has generated a lot of discussion on social media, and theories abound as to why the Giants have seen such a decrease. Are people less interested in the Giants because of Farhan Zaidi's roster construction? Even when the SF Giants won 107 games last year, they weren't selling out Oracle Park despite Covid-19 restrictions being lifted. We can have all the theories we want, but they're missing a crucial component: the league-wide trend of attendance declines. That's right: across MLB, attendance was down about 6% from 2019 to 2022. We're looking at those two years because they were the last two full seasons without restrictions on attendance. In other words, the San Francisco Giants are not unique in having a significant dip in attendance over the last few years! The Philadelphia Phillies, who have a lot of big names, have built their team largely through free agency (as a lot of Giants fans want Zaidi to do), and they're in the NLCS. Yet they saw nearly twice as big of a decrease as the Giants from 2019 to 2022, and they drew fewer fans overall this season than the SF Giants, who won fewer games. Turning the page, the timelines for Kyle Harrison and Marco Luciano are discussed. Harrison could impact the major league team early in 2023, perhaps as early as April (though more realistically May or June). Luciano should start the season in Double-A and could make it to Triple-A by the middle of the season if everything goes according to plan. That would make him a potential September callup candidate in a dream scenario. Farhan Zaidi's possible free-agent wishlist is discussed. Yes, the stars at the top are certainly on that list, but Brandon Nimmo might be the perfect combination of talent, value, speed, defense, and offense that the San Francisco Giants are seeking. Nimmo plus one of the big bats, plus a top-of-the-rotation arm would be a really nice offseason for the Giants. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
Just a few short weeks after San Francisco Giants GM Scott Harris left for the Detroit Tigers, the Giants have found his replacement. Pete Putila, the former assistant GM of the Houston Astros, has been hired as the SF Giants' new general manager. Putila is largely credited with helping to establish the Astros' immensely successful player development pipeline. His hiring by the Giants signals their intention to dramatically improve their development capabilities moving forward. The Giants have not done a great job of successfully developing their own minor league players in the four seasons under President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi. Several of their top draft picks have stalled for various reasons, and the major league team hasn't enjoyed many breakout performances from young players in recent seasons. Logan Webb is one exception, as is Camilo Doval, but the Giants haven't had a lot of young talent impact the team and it has been a problem. Putila should be able to put the San Francisco Giants in the best position possible to improve in this area. There is, of course, Putila's association to the 2017-18 Astros teams that were known to be invovled in illegal sign stealing. But Putila was the Astros' director of player development at the time, a role that was very likely not at all involved in the in-game sign-stealing efforts that originated out of the dugout during games. Zaidi says he checked with MLB to see whether Putila had been involved in the league's investigation into the Astros, and the league confirmed that he wasn't even interviewed, meaning there was zero reason to suspect he had any involvement. The Astros' scheme is often falsely considered an organization-wide effort, but in reality it was a fairly crude operation that originated with on-field personnel. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
The San Francisco Giants are about to embark upon a huge offseason. They just had an 81-81 season, which can only be characterized as a significant disappointment following up a record-setting 107-win campaign in 2021. The Giants know they need to have a big offseason, and Farhan Zaidi's meeting with reporters was the very first step in the offseason for the SF Giants. Zaidi addressed the status of Brandon Belt and Evan Longoria. He basically implied that both could be back, but hinted that if they do return to the Giants, they would have less significant roles. This is no surprise, as both players have the potential to still be productive, and they are well-liked inside the clubhouse and amongst Giants fans, but neither should be relied upon to make a significant impact. The Giants hold a $13 million club option over Longoria (with a $5 million buyout), whereas Belt is a pure free agent and is coming off knee surgery. Carlos Rodón was also addressed. The Giants and Zaidi fully expect Rodón to opt out, which is an most obvious call. Rodón may follow in Kevin Gausman's footsteps, departing the Giants for a long-term deal Zaidi doesn't appear to be eager to hand out to a starting pitcher. The Giants may look to add an ace-caliber pitcher on a short-term deal, and players like Jacob deGrom, Justin Verlander, and Clayton Kershaw should be available on that kind of deal. Zaidi also said prospect Kyle Harrison should impact the MLB rotation next year, perhaps even early in the season. Zaidi also touched on his search for the Giants' next GM, which should be wrapped up within a few weeks. He also discussed the Giants' commitment to Brandon Crawford at shortstop, and noted that "everything is on the table," meaning they won't shy away from the stud free-agent shortstops just because Crawford is on the team and owed $16 million in 2023, the final year of his deal. It's time to bust out the scalpel and open up the body of the Giants' 2022 season to determine what went wrong with the team that won a franchise-record 107 games just a season ago. Eric, Willie, and Chad put their gloves on and dig deep into the mediocrity of their offense, the sub-average bullpen, and bad defense that was countered by their excellent starting pitching. They also put out their Christmas shopping list for Zaidi, take a look at how their pre-season predictions went, and forecast the 2022 MLB Playoffs. It's a full one! Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
The San Francsico Giants have lost a lot of games this season, and they just lost their General Manager. Scott Harris, the Giants' GM since November 2019, is leaving to become the Detroit Tigers' President of Baseball Operations. It's a major promotion for Harris, who will now assume Farhan Zaidi's role with his new organization. The Giants and Zaidi will be tasked with hiring a replacement GM, something they'll want to get done as quickly as possible given that the offseason is fast approaching and the SF Giants have tons of work to do. The Giants are still a very desirable organization to work for and there should be no shortage of interest for this role. Despite the rough 2022 campaign for the San Francisco Giants, they're still a big-market team with a beautiful ballpark, and are primed to be big spenders this offseason (at least that's what we hope). The Giants finally wrapped up their miserable season series with the Dodgers. The SF Giants ended up going 4-15 against their rivals, the worst winning percentage they've ever had against LA since moving to San Francisco. It was a miserable season vs. LA, and the talent disparity was monumental. The Giants can and must add to this roster in a meaningful way this offseason. Expectations shouldn't necessarily be to match the talent of the Dodgers in one offseason, but they should at least make themselves a somewhat obvious playoff team. If they don't, pressure will start to mount in a serious way on this front office, which will be entering year five of the Farhan Zaidi Era. A new GM could bring some welcomed new perspectives.
