Locked On Giants is normally all about the data, with of course a heavy dose of passion mixed in. But on today's episode, things switch gears in a dramatic way. Javier Reyes of Locked On Padres joins the show and each host describes the players on his respective team that fans have disliked the most in recent seasons. From the San Francisco Giants' side of things, players like Mark Melancon, Tommy La Stella, a couple of hot-headed relievers, and many others are discussed at length. Explored are the reasons why fans dislike them. For the Padres, there are some names that might surprise SF Giants fans, including Eric Hosmer, who somehow has a reputation in the game for being a really good player, even though he was just awful for San Diego. Locked On Giant host Ben Kaspick goes so far as to call Hosmer the most overrated player in baseball in the last three decades. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Yesterday, the San Francisco Giants' and San Diego Padres' most unpopular players in recent memory were discussed. Turns out, there were too many to fit into just one episode. Locked On Giants and Locked On Padres continue to point out the players who were not embraced by fans since they started hosting their respective shows in Part II of the "Love to Hate" series.Numerous recent Giants certainly fall into that category. Even in 2021, when the SF Giants won 107 games, Tommy La Stella was disliked for his poor performance on the field, frequent injuries, and generally unathletic nature. In the last couple of years, after the Giants DFA'd La Stella with a year left on his contract, players like Alex Wood, Ross Stripling, and Anthony DeSclafani have been the target of fan frustration. Joc Pederson might even qualify now that he left the Giants and liked a negative instagram comment about San Francisco on his way out the door.On the Padres side, there's one clear and obvious winner who stands far above the rest. Eric Hosmer is host Javier Reyes' greatest nemesis. So much so that Hosmer has actually blocked the Locked On Padres twitter account. Hosmer's strong reputation is contrasted against the experience of actually watching him play on a daily basis and looking at the numbers that show he might be one of the most overrated players ever.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

The regular season is just over three weeks away, and there are some burning questions surrounding the San Francisco Giants. The first question is all about the corners. In the outfield, can Michael Conforto and/or Mitch Haniger return to All-Star form? For the SF Giants to have a successful season, one or both of these players probably has to get back to being a really good major league player. In the infield, can the Giants' David Villar and LaMonte Wade Jr. handle the job? Villar is still relatively unproven, and Wade regressed heavily in 2022 after a terrific 2021.Next question: Is the Giants' defense improved enough to avoid sinking their season? Defense was such a huge problem last year, but when you look at the players who hurt the San Francisco Giants the most, it's a lot of guys who are no longer on the team. Either that or they don't figure to play as much, or they are moving to less important positions. Joc Pederson comes out of the outfield. Darin Ruf is gone. Luis González is depth as opposed to a starter. No more Tommy La Stella or Brandon Belt, who wasn't moving well at all last year. Will this be the year that young SF Giants finally start to demonstrate that the team has a good pipeline? Kyle Harrison and Casey Schmitt have big seasons ahead of them. Can Villar and/or Joey Bart make the leap? How about Vaun Brown and Marco Luciano? And finally, is the SF Giants' rotation, which lost the huge upside of Carlos Rodón, be able to perform well with depth being its greatest strength? For every Carlos Rodón, there's often a Tommy La Stella. The San Francisco Giants got a career year out of Rodón in 2022, but they also suffered through injuries and underperformance from like likes of La Stella and others. Who on the 2023 SF Giants are the candidates to have a career year? And who will underperform? By definition, it's a hard question to answer, but the Giants have a lot of candidates to have big seasons and not many who are likely to play poorly. Youngsters Joey Bart and David Villar still have a lot to prove, however. What are the rules for Rule 5 picks? Specifically, what is going to happen with Blake Sabol? Sabol was a Rule 5 pick by the Reds, and the SF Giants traded for him minutes later. Sabol must make the Giants' 26-man roster—and stay there all season—or be offered back to the Pirates. He's part of the catcher competition with Bart, Roberto Pérez, and Austin Wynns. Will the SF Giants be buyers or sellers at the deadline? Unless they're totally out of the race, which is unlikely, expect them to be either buyers or somewhere in between. Even when they've "sold" under Farhan Zaidi, the moves have been relatively minor. He famously held onto Madison Bumgarner and Will Smith in 2019, and Rodón last year. When they've been in their best buying position, the Giants acquired Kris Bryant. Expect those trends to continue depending on where the Giants are in late July. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

The San Francisco Giants weren't a 107-win team in 2021, and they weren't an 81-team in 2022. The 2021 SF Giants outperformed their talent level by dozens of wins. Last year's Giants seemingly underperformed by 5-10 wins. Hopefully things stabilize a bit in 2023, as the SF Giants figure to be in the mix for a playoff spot. Projections have the Giants as an above-.500 team, good enough to make the playoffs. How many games will the Giants win this year? How will the Giants' defense be affected by the shift restrictions? A lot has been said about how their hitters could be affected, but what about the defense on a team whose pitchers generate so many ground balls? It might actually help the Giants, as Thairo Estrada is a relatively rangy and athletic second baseman. Someone like Tommy La Stella would've hurt them there, but he's no longer on the roster. Hopefully Estrada stays healthy, as the likes of Wilmer Flores might otherwise be forced to play second, without being able to shift, and that would hurt. What would it take for the Giants to trade for the Brewers' Corbin Burnes? It would cost a lot of prospect capital, as Burnes is one of the best pitchers in MLB and is under club control for two more seasons. The Giants aren't really in position to be selling away their best prospects for short-term pieces like Burnes. San Francisco has money to spend every winter, and it makes far more sense to simply pay for a player like Burnes rather than give up someone like Kyle Harrison—and his six-plus years of team control—for a short-term solution. Ironically, despite all the negativity surrounding the Giants this offseason, they come in with a rosy record projection, according to ZiPS. The popular projection system projects the SF Giants to win 88 games and make the postseason as the final team in the NL. Perhaps even more surprisingly, the Giants are projected to finish only a few wins beneath the Dodgers and the Padres, who each have 91-win projections. Those teams appear to have higher ceilings than the San Francisco Giants, but they also have far less depth to cover bad and unexpected scenarios.Logan Webb was a surprising omission from the Team USA World Baseball Classic roster, which was announced last evening. Webb had agreed to participate in the tournament earlier this offseason, so it was surprising to see his name left off of the official roster for Team USA. Webb is an extension candidate this offseason (even though he's under team control through 2025), so perhaps the Giants wanted him to put off him plans to play in the WBC while they're negotiating a long-term deal. Why didn't the SF Giants upgrade their infield defense this winter? The outfield was much more of a problem than the infield defensively in 2022. And even in the infield, where the Giants ranked 21st with -7 Outs Above Average, they got a combined -12 from Brandon Belt (-4), Tommy La Stella (-4), and Donovan Walton (-4). Their projected starters, Brandon Crawford (+7), Thairo Estrada (+3), LaMonte Wade Jr. (+2), and David Villar (-1) combined for +11 Outs Above Average in 2022. So the short answer is that their infield defense might not really be a huge problem and that's why they didn't make huge efforts to improve it.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Ironically, despite all the negativity surrounding the Giants this offseason, they come in with a rosy record projection, according to ZiPS. The popular projection system projects the SF Giants to win 88 games and make the postseason as the final team in the NL. Perhaps even more surprisingly, the Giants are projected to finish only a few wins beneath the Dodgers and the Padres, who each have 91-win projections. Those teams appear to have higher ceilings than the San Francisco Giants, but they also have far less depth to cover bad and unexpected scenarios. Logan Webb was a surprising omission from the Team USA World Baseball Classic roster, which was announced last evening. Nothing lasts forever. Former San Francisco Giants General Manager Brian Sabean, who was the architect of the team's championship era, has left the organization for a "better opportunity" with the New York Yankees. Sabean became the SF Giants' GM in the late '90s, and held onto the role deep into the 2010s. He stepped aside for Bobby Evans in the middle of the 2010s, but Sabean still had a prominent role in the Giants' decision making. But after Evans was fired near the end of the 2018 season, Sabean moved into an advisory role. He said that he wasn't used as much as he expected, and the opportunity with New York was a better fit for him. He implied that he wasn't needed anymore within the Giants' organization, which is a bit upsetting to hear. Best of luck to Brian Sabean. Giants fans owe him a debt of gratitude for his service and crucial role in bringing in the most successful era in the history of the franchise.Turning the page, the Giants' DFA of Tommy La Stella is discussed. La Stella's first two years in San Francisco were quite poor, and it's no big surprised that he didn't survive the roster over the offseason. The Giants needed to clear a 40-man roster spot after signing Taylor Rogers. They'll still need to clear another when they officially announce their deal with outfielder Michael Conforto. La Stella is owed $11.5 million this season, but his deal was always a small one. More than the money, this move is significant because it frees up La Stella's spot on the active roster. Those at-bats and innings in the field (or at the DH spot) will now go to other players. Are we sleeping on J.D. Davis? He really hit with the SF Giants down the stretch, and he has a career .350 on-base percentage. When we're projecting out the Giants' roster, we often have LaMonte Wade Jr. at first base and David Villar at third, but doesn't Davis deserve to start somewhere? While there's no doubt Davis is a quality hitter, the question is whether he can provide any kind of positive (or even neutral) defensive value anywhere on the diamond. Davis, Wilmer Flores, and Villar all provide similar skill-sets. It's still entirely possible that one is moved prior to the start of the 2023 season.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

How upset will fans of the San Francisco Giants be if the team misses out on all of the top talent this offseason? The Giants' top target is clearly Aaron Judge, and a resolution could come within a week. Judge may very well end up back in New York, but there's also a chance he ends up elsewhere. Can you imagine the reaction if the Los Angeles Dodgers signed Aaron Judge? Giants fans would go absolutely ballistic. If Judge signs anywhere other than San Francisco, it's been pretty clearly reported that Carlos Correa is their next target. But what if the miss on him as well, and essentially don't land any top players? There's always the trade market, but the Giants' preferred method for adding top talent this winter should be cold hard cash. What's the latest with the SF Giants' reported interest in Kenley Jansen? About a week and a half ago, it was reported that the Giants were discussing a two-year contract with the former Dodgers closer. But we haven't heard anything since. It's possible that those reports were planted by an agent. No new reports have emerged on Jansen in the last 10 days or so, so it's unclear where the San Francisco Giants stand—and whether or not those original reports were even true.Other questions addressed on today's mailbag Locked On Giants: Have the Giants overused or underused platoons under Gabe Kapler? What do you make of Kapler's comments in The Athletic at the end of the season when he said he likes platooning and finds using a lot of pinch hitters "fun"? If Judge signs anywhere other than San Francisco, it's been pretty clearly reported that Carlos Correa is their next target. But what if the miss on him as well, and essentially don't land any top players? There's always the trade market, but the Giants' preferred method for adding top talent this winter should be cold hard cash. What's the latest with the SF Giants' reported interest in Kenley Jansen? About a week and a half ago, it was reported that the Giants were discussing a two-year contract with the former Dodgers closer. But we haven't heard anything since. It's possible that those reports were planted by an agent. No new reports have emerged on Jansen in the last 10 days or so, so it's unclear where the San Francisco Giants stand—and whether or not those original reports were even true. Other questions addressed on today's mailbag Locked On Giants: Have the Giants overused or underused platoons under Gabe Kapler? What do you make of Kapler's comments in The Athletic at the end of the season when he said he likes platooning and finds using a lot of pinch hitters "fun"? Could the Giants look to unload Tommy La Stella in a bad contract swap? Might they attach a top prospect in order to move the $11.5 million he's owed in 2023? It happens every year. Free agents are hyped in the offseason, only to fail to live up to their new deals. Last year, several players didn't live up to expectations. Kris Bryant was hurt all season in Colorado. Nick Castellanos produced like Tommy La Stella after getting $100 million from the Phillies. Which San Francsico Giants targets are likely to underperform? And which SF Giants targets are likely to overperform? Among the top free agents available, there are certainly cases to make that each one could underperform. Aaron Judge will likely never have a better season than he just had. Xander Bogaerts has somewhat concerning expected numbers (based on quality of contact). Dansby Swanson may get a huge deal, but has never been that great of a hitter. Brandon Nimmo hasn't been able to stay on the field enough and may end up underperforming based on health alone. In terms of who may overperform, Willson Contreras is a solid bet as he seems to be lining up as a solid bargain. But will the Giants be interested in signing a catcher? Do the San Francisco Giants have the ability to sign a big-time bat (like Aaron Judge) in addition to a top-of-the-rotation arm (like Carlos Rodón or Jacob deGrom)? Their payroll, including arbitration estimates, will be around $100 million after Rodón opts out and if they take the buyout on Evan Longoria. That would allow them to add Judge at $35 million a year and Rodón at $25 million a year and still come in around $160 million, where they've been the last few seasons. Indeed, the Giants are in a great position to make impact additions if they so desire. And hopefully the San Francisco Giants are willing and able to push well beyond that modest $160 million figure in 2023 and beyond. After winning 107 games last year, the San Francisco Giants flopped to an 81-81 record in 2022. Their position player group had a lot to do with it. The SF Giants' best three position players last year—Brandon Crawford, Buster Posey, and Brandon Belt—combined to produce 14.6 FanGraphs Wins Above Replacement (fWAR). This year, the Giants' top three position players—Thairo Estrada, Mike Yastrzemski, and Austin Slater—combined to produce just 7.0 fWAR. Posey's absence was felt, but also the Brandons combined to produce 8.2 fewer fWAR than they did in 2021.Joey Bart ultimately did not have a very good season. Strikeouts were a problem in the beginning, and they briefly went away after being sent down to the Minors, but those issues resurfaced later in the year. Austin Wynns actually ended up with a better wRC+ than Bart this year, and he should be the backup catcher in 2023. Bart will need to improve his swing and miss and chase issues if he wants to remain the San Francisco Giants' catcher of the future. The state of the infield and outfield is in flux. Brandon Belt is set to reach free agency. The Giants hold a $13M club option on Evan Longoria, with a $5M buyout. Wilmer Flores was extended. Tommy La Stella may not survive on the roster this winter. Brandon Crawford is under contract for one more year. The Giants can bring back J.D. Davis through the arbitration process. Thairo Estrada was one of the biggest bright spots of the year for the San Francisco Giants. In the outfield, will Joc Pederson be back? He did very well in his role, crushing right-handed pitching as expected. But he's a limited profile and his next contract will reflect that. The Giants would like to bring him back, but does he want to be back? Mike Yastrzemski and Austin Slater can form a formidable platoon either in center or right. LaMonte Wade Jr. and Luis González are very much on the bubble and it wouldn't be shocking if neither was on the SF Giants' active roster to start 2023.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:
