Part 4 of the ongoing discussion looks at the French Army in 1915: an often overlooked year, it was a year of “carnage, optimism, and learning,” as Alex says in the talk. Fighting to keep pressure on the German invader and relieve pressure on the WW1 Russian Front, the French faced a long year where that optimism took several body blows; it was a year where the French Poilu learned this would be a long and terrible war.     This was a fascinating conversation as always, and you really need to listen for the part where Jim Taub talks about handling and firing a Chauchat light machine gun!   Joining us for this discussion are:   Alex Lyons, the man who spends his free time telling us the story of his Poilu great-grandfather on Twitter, Steve Marsdin, a student and researcher of the 1914 Battle of the Frontiers and its effects, Jim Smithson, author of “A Taste of Success: The First Battle of the Scarpe. We are starting a 4 Part Series on ChatGPT and AI Tools for Ministry.  We recently released a bonus episode of the podcast with Rob Laughter and Jason Moore recently as we discussed MidJourney and AI Imagery. Give that a listen if you are interested in that topic. Originally we were going to have several folks together in one episode to talk about ChatGPT, but the content is so rich that we decided to split it up into 4 episodes - we're going to do a deep dive into what ChatGPT is, and some effective and unique ways to use it for Ministry. We'll have Alex Lyons on today, then we'll have Ryan Frank from KidzMatter, then our friend Kenny Jahng, and we will conclude the series with a bonus episode with Dustin Stout and talk about his new tool that gives ChatGPT superpowers. So today, we've got Alex Lyons. Alex is the Creative Director at the South Carolina Baptist Convention - Alex and Carl do several state events together with the convention. We're going to talk very elementary when it comes ChatGPT and define some terms but also talk through how they are using it with great effect at the SC Baptist Convention - mainly, how they are being able to produce a mountain of additional content at lighting speeds. Also we'll talk through several other AI tools Alex and his team are using. SHOW NOTES --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/makingsundayhappen/support

This was so much fun to host–with the help of Alex Lyons, a fantastic group of WW1 enthusiasts were gathered for what will be the first of a multi-part series of discussions of the French Army and the French experience during WW1.    France went to war in 1914 as a country of 40 million people. Its army went to war in 19th century uniforms of dark blue tunics and red trousers, calling up 8.5 million Frenchmen over the next four devastating years. When the guns went silent in November 1918, the Adrian-helmeted and horizon-blue clad PCFs– pauvre con du front, or poor bastards at the front–had seen 1.4 million of their brothers fall on the field of battle, with another 4.2 million wounded–a million of those wounded significantly disabled for the rest of their lives.    Joining us for this discussion are: Bart Debeer, who co-wrote a Dutch-language Western Front Guide for Beginners with a friend Bryn Hammond, whose blog “Vingt Frong”  aims to “awaken interest in the French experience of the First World War in an English-speaking audience,” Alex Lyons, the man who spends his free time telling us the story of his Poilu great-grandfather on Twitter, Steve Marsdin, a student and researcher of the 1914 Battle of the Frontiers and its effects, Jim Smithson, author of “A Taste of Success: The First Battle of the Scarpe. The Opening Phase of the Battle of Arras 9-14 April 1917” and two guide books on the Arras battlefields, Dr. Rich Willis, author of the forthcoming “Fighting for the Butcher: British Troops Fighting in General Mangin's Xe Armée, July-August 1918”   I'm really excited to present this first discussion on these fascinating topics, and I hope you enjoy this first talk.    The BFWWP is on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/BattlesoftheFirstWorldWarPodcast.    Any questions, comments or concerns please contact me through the website, www.firstworldwarpodcast.com. Great War historian and writer Alex Lyons joined me on an evening in the UK to let us into a very personal and ground-level account of a French soldier in the First World War: through the letters of his great-grandfather, Jules André Destrigneville.   Alex has been composing tweets of Jules' letters, cross-referenced against unit histories, orders, and other soldiers' accounts. He has also written articles for the Great War Group's excellent publication, Salient Points. Having the time to talk with Alex about his great-grandfather's experiences and the general experience of French soldiers in World War I was an immensely rewarding time, and I think you'll enjoy it.    Correction: deep into the episode Alex and I discuss some of the ranks in the French Army, specifically those of sous-officiers and officiers.   Sous-officiers are those of NonCommissioned Officers, and are the ranks of Caporal, Sergeant, and Adjutant and their various grades. Officiers are officer ranks, beginning at Sous Lieutenant and going all the way up to Général.   Follow Alex on Twitter: https://twitter.com/Ri315e   Link for the Great War Group: https://greatwargroup.com/   The BFWWP is on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/BattlesoftheFirstWorldWarPodcast.    Any questions, comments or concerns please contact me through the website, www.firstworldwarpodcast.com. Mooliano Faze is a laid back, down to earth person who just happens to be one of the funniest people you’ll ever meet. Being very gifted at the art of the joke, a friend convinced him to start doing comedy skits on social media a few years back. Despite filming the skits mostly from a cell phone, the quality of the content, along with Mooliano’s unique approach at building his brand and name by making hilarious, yet controversial Facebook posts, he grew a large following in a short amount of time. Because of the popularity of his skits, he decided to teamed up with former JSR guest Raymond “White Jesus” Thompson to up the production quality of the skits by helping script scenes and shoot them more professionally, eventually adding JSR’s own Alex Lyons to the crew to do audio. With Ian being under the weather, Alex decide to take the studio on the road and sit down with Mooliano and Ray to talk about this project that he was recently brought into, along with what’s wrong with comedy now, what they think a comedian’s job is, and a lot of just shooting the shit and laughing. All this and more on this episode of Joe Shmoe Radio. For the full effect of Mooliano Faze, follow him on Facebook to see his skits and catch many laughs from his wildly funny posts:https://m.facebook.com/michael.c.faison?tsid=0.361972133679725&source=resultYou can also follow him on Instagram at MoolianofazeBe sure to check out our other episodes as well. Ray is a longtime friend of hosts Ian and Alex and just a down to earth and funny guy. to a lot of his friends, he is known as White Jesus because of his image. This nickname recently sparked an idea in Ray's head to start writing an internet series called simply "White Jesus", with him obviously playing the main character. He then reached out to a few people to help contribute to the writing process, one of them being our own Alex Lyons. Alex found the premise hilarious and wanted Ray to come on the podcast to talk about it, as well as just have a good time and laugh. Hope you all enjoy this as much as we enjoyed recording it. a hilarious conversation that you would only hear on Joe Shmoe Radio!!!

Clare Balding is walking with dogs (and their owners) in this new series of Ramblings. Prog 5: Dartmoor with Alex Lyons who is a search and rescue dog handler. Alex Lyons is a dog handler with the Tavistock-Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team. He and several members of his team - and their dogs - take Clare for a wild, wet and windy walk on Dartmoor. Clare sees how the rescue dogs work, and asks why anyone would want to spend their leisure time doing a voluntary job which is exhausting and occasionally upsetting. The answer? A sense of fulfilment, the opportunity to spend time in beautiful and remote countryside, and - of course - the joy of working with highly trained and intelligent dogs (who make their presence felt, and heard, throughout the programme). Producer Karen Gregor.
