Today, we stand at a new “Napster moment,” but this time, it's not limited to music. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are revolutionizing the media landscape in ways that could eclipse the Napster revolution. Vast datasets, including text, images, audio, and video, are being used to train AI models, producing content at an unparalleled scale and speed. The problem? Much of this content – essential for AI model training – is sourced without creators' permission. This new phase of digital disruption raises critical ethical and legal questions about the future of IP in an AI-driven world. Let's dive in and talk about this critical moment in AI innovation.

Host: Kenny Jahng, Editor-in-Chief of Church Tech Today Guest: Clay Scroggins, Author and Leadership Coach This episode features a compelling conversation between Kenny Jahng and Clay Scroggins, leadership expert, author, and former lead pastor at Buckhead Church under North Point Ministries. They explore the intersection of leadership, technology, and ministry, discussing practical ways pastors can embrace technology, tackle burnout, and leverage AI to enhance their effectiveness. Key Takeaways Modern Challenges in Pastoral Leadership Expanded Role Expectations: Pastors are expected to fulfill roles as theologians, communicators, organizational leaders, cultural commentators, and technology experts. Tech Complexity: The growing reliance on technology adds pressure to pastoral responsibilities. Insights from Pushpay's 2024 Report: 45% of pastors feel unconfident about adopting tech solutions. 55% of churches allocate less than 10% of their budget to tech. Budget constraints and confidence gaps are major barriers to tech adoption. Technology as a Ministry Tool Technology enables churches to extend engagement beyond the Sunday service. Practical Uses: Mobile apps for prayer requests and volunteer scheduling. Bible software like Logos for more efficient sermon preparation. Key Perspective: Technology is a neutral tool—its impact depends on how churches use it. Approaching AI in Ministry Adoption Trends: AI adoption is growing, with 87% of church leaders in favor of its use in ministry. Common Objections: Misconceptions that AI in sermon prep is "cheating." Kenny's Philosophy: AI should be seen as an intern—a tool to save time and enhance focus on pastoral care. Actionable Steps for Pastors Experiment with AI: Use tools like ChatGPT to assist with non-sermon tasks, such as planning difficult conversations or creating group materials. Leverage Congregational Talent: Seek advice from tech-savvy members of your church. Build Influence: Advocate for a tech-forward culture by presenting clear, actionable plans to leadership. Memorable Quotes from Clay "We're not competing against technology; we're using it to raise the sail and catch the wind." "Prepare more efficiently so you can pastor more effectively." "The answers to your problems aren't always in the boardroom; they're out in your congregation." Meeting new people and learning from others is something that I really enjoy doing. That is why, ever since 2016, I have been highlighting some of those people each year that I think you should follow and learn from. They are people/groups I've learned a lot from and highly recommend. You can find the previous years here: 2016, 2017 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 In order to make my list, the criteria is two-fold. For starters, these people have to be involved in Church Communications, Social Media, Student or Family Ministry or Online Ministry. Secondly, they also need to be sharing great content on a consistent basis. And that's it. It's pretty simple but those are the important aspects of my criteria.  So, in NO particular order, here are the top 6 to seek out in 2024:  Peter Von Kahle. Peter is a videographer working for numerous ministries and Churches for video and marketing support.. He's on Twitter/X, has an awesome blog with tons of great insights and encouragement. Here my conversation with him about Premiere Pro Tips here. Kenny Jahng. When it comes to technology, Kenny is everywhere. He's been in the Online Ministry world for a number of years, serving as an Online Pastor at Liquid Church for a number of years. He is the Director of AI NEXT for Exponential and runs AI for Church Leaders and Church Tech Today. You can also find him on Twitter/X. Vernette John-Joiles. Vernette is the founder of Digging into Digital where her goal is to "upskill Christian leaders into the digital age." She offers great webinars, training sessions and consulting for Churches and ministry leaders to help them become more proficient in the digital world. In addition to her website, you can find her on Facebook. Here my conversation with her here. Aaron Magnuson. Currently, Aaron is working at Pray.com and has been for the past year and a half. However, he started doing online ministry for 10 years serving as an Online Pastor for 10 years at Churches in Oregon, California and Texas. He is also the co-host of the Social Media Church Podcast with Nils Smith and DK Hammonds. He's been doing that for the past 5 years. You can find him on Twitter/X. You can hear my conversation with him here. Barbara Carneiro. Barbara is a Church Communications specialist who is the Founder & Chief Mentor at Accidental Church Communicator and started the Church Communicator Conference. Building AI Skills: The Power of a 3-Minute Daily Prompt On this episode of The Church Online Podcast, host Kenny Jahng discusses how spending just 3-5 minutes each day on one generative AI prompt can help build skills over time. Kenny explains why consistency matters more than intensity when trying to gain proficiency. He emphasizes starting small, with just one prompt per day, as a way to tap into the compounding effects of a daily habit. Kenny shares how easy it is for the 3 minutes to slip away unused on busy days. He encourages listeners to stick to the routine regardless, as it is the habit itself that leads to growth. This practical episode explores how tiny bits of daily practice with AI tools can gradually strengthen abilities and creativity over the long-term. Kenny focuses on the methodology more than the specifics. Are you serious about taking this 30 day challenge?
