Chris and Don interview Don Rank the Pennsylvania Chairman for Backcountry Hunters and Anglers (BHA). They discuss the current funding sources for Wildlife (Pittman-Robertson Act) and Sport Fish (Dingell-Johnson Act). Don talks about a new proposal called RAWA Recovering America's Wildlife Act and the importance the act will have for all wildlife agencies. In Ohio it would be an additional 18 million for the ODNR. RAWA passed the House and is currently waiting for approval in the Senate.
Kaden McArthur, Government Relations Manager at Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA), speaks with host Mike Leonard about a recent bill that would undermine the Wildlife Restoration Program, which exists thanks to the federal excise tax on firearms and ammunition. Rep. Andrew Clyde (GA-09) and 53 cosponsors introduced the RETURN our Constitutional Rights Act, which would eliminate the federal excise tax on firearms and ammunition. Hunters and the firearms industry lobbied for the creation of this excise tax, authorized in 1937, making the proposed elimination puzzling. While the proposed legislation offers a replacement for the tax, the replacement would be a cut to recent levels of funding. All this is to say, don't mess with a good thing - a highly popular user-funded conservation model that hunters and anglers are passionate about. Luckily, McArthur and Leonard don't think this bill will gain much traction. This bill does not make any changes to the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund, however, the precedent it sets underscores the importance of organizations, like ASA and BHA, having a presence on Capitol Hill to represent the interests of hunters and anglers. Land Tawney is the President and CEO of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, one of North America's leading and most effective advocates for wild public lands, waters, and wildlife. Founded around a campfire in 2004, BHA uses education, nonpartisan political advocacy, stewardship initiatives, and stakeholder coalitions to ensure the protection of our public lands for generations to come. As its name implies, BHA is an organization that works on behalf of sportsmen, but you don't have to be a hardcore hunter or fisherman to benefit from its work. I'm a lot of things, but a hardcore hunter is not one of them– yet, I'm a proud member of BHA and a super-fan of all that it has accomplished. - Land was born and raised in Montana, the son of two highly respected conservationists who instilled in him a deep reverence for wild places and the importance of protecting them. From an early age, Land was hunting, fishing, and spending time around his parents' friends and colleagues, many of whom were well-known, renowned conservationists. When Land was in college, his father passed away, which fortified his desire to devote all of his professional energy to conserving the wild places that have always meant so much to his family. After successful stints at several notable conservation organizations, Land took the helm of BHA in 2013. Since then, he has led and grown the organization into one of the country's leading voices for sportsmen and public land protectors. - When Land and I connected for this conversation, he was hard at work preparing for the upcoming BHA Rendezvous, which is taking place May 12-14 in Missoula, Montana. We discuss all of the details of that premiere conservation event, and you can find additional information in the notes and on this episode's webpage. And we also covered a ton of interesting and important topics, including: the importance of advocating for conservation in Washington, DC; how apathy can be a huge threat to our wild lands; the slippery-slope threat of transferring federal lands to state or private entities; the importance of remaining optimistic in the face of challenges; how BHA helps and encourages new hunters; the importance of BHA's state chapters and local leadership; Land's personal and professional conservation journey; and, of course, he offers tons of great book recommendations. - A huge thanks to Land for joining me during such a busy time of year. And I encourage all of you to check out BHA's membership options and consider supporting them if you are so inclined. I deal with conservation organizations all day in both my podcast and conservation work, and BHA is the best of the best. Land Tawney is a lot of things. Most folks know him for his job title: president/CEO of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA). They know him as the fiery leader of a passionate group of huntin’ and fishin’ public land advocates. During his rise at BHA, Land has made a name for himself as a man unwilling to compromise and certainly willing to fight for what he believes. Get to know Tawney, though, and you’ll find that he’s all about service. He serves the hunting community, BHA membership, his family and his home state of Montana in all that he does. Tawney joined me at the MeatEater, Inc., headquarters to talk about the state of the public land movement, the freshly concluded midterm elections and the important legislation that needs all of our attention. It was one of my favorite conversations. Enjoy. Now, here's your host, Mark Norquist. Mark: 00:21 Hello and welcome to this third episode of the Modern Carnivore Podcast. I recently caught up with Land Tawny and Ashley Peters when I was down in Bentonville, Arkansas. Land is the President and CEO of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, a conservation organization focused on public land issues. And Ashley is both a member out of the Minnesota chapter of that organization. Uh, but most importantly she is a new hunter. Just started hunting a couple of years ago. So today's podcast, we talk about public lands and threats to them. And this is important because I think a lot of people don't realize that public lands in the US are truly the backbone of the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation. And without getting into too much detail here, this model was formally articulated, to be honest just in the last couple of decades, but it's built off the attitudes in work of many people in the hunting and fishing community, going way back to the nineteenth century, there are seven tenants to it and the seventh one is about the democracy of hunting, which is really based on inspiration from the work that Ted...
