Shiyan Koh, Managing Partner of Hustle Fund, and Jeremy Au talked about three main themes: 1. Taylor Swift $500M Singapore Economy Boost: Jeremy and Shiyan discussed the Singapore government's strategic chess moves for Taylor Swift's concert exclusivity in Southeast Asia. They discussed the excellent return on investment of the $3M move for a $500M increase in Singapore's tourism receipts, stimulating national GDP by 0.25% points for Q1 2024. They also discussed the regional competition for hosting such blockbuster events, along with the underappreciated aspects of the nationalization of the Singapore sports hub, travel logistics hub infrastructure and sensitivity to cultural norms. 2. Barbell Entertainment Blockbusters vs. Long Tail: Jeremy and Shiyan explored the Internet's explosion of the content industry, leading to bimodal distribution, where both blockbuster events and niche content find substantial audiences thanks to the zero marginal cost of digital consumption - and the plunge in middle-tier content. They also discussed how generative AI will impact the shape of this barbell. They reference the book Blockbusters by Harvard professor Anita Elberse and The Long Tail by Chris Anderson. 3. City Talent Vortex & Industry Concentrations: Jeremy and Shiyan discussed the challenges and opportunities presented by talent concentrations. They discussed how cities become industry hubs, such as finance in Singapore, entertainment in LA and tech in SF, with a thought experiment on whether Southeast Asia could produce a global superstar like Taylor Swift. They stressed the structural and cultural factors that influence where talent flourishes, the role of national policy in nurturing ecosystems that can compete on the global stage, and how individual talented individuals should react. Jeremy and Shiyan also talked about the social aspects of fasting vs. eating, the fan communities of avatar-driven Vtubers, and their personal preferences for content consumption like Dune by writer Frank Herbet vs. director Denis Villeneuve. Netflix is opening its first-ever restaurant featuring food from ‘Chef's Table' and ‘Iron Chef' stars in LA, but won't be allowing a meet-and-greet with the chefs. We're sure this great digital to physical move is still missing a trick by making it more about the food and less about the people. We consider why this restrictive choice has been made when the event itself is set out to build and showcase benefits of the physical VS digital entertainment experience. Lionel Messi has turned down $1.9 billion to play in Saudi Arabia and instead moved to Inter Miami for far less. We think this might be the most genius business and personal brand move he's made so far. But is he following in the footsteps of a British player who also said no to short-term money gain in aid of longer-term success in Miami, too? Maurice wrote a Linkedin post with key takeaways from Jacquemus's brand exposure and awareness tactics. This luxury fashion brand is everywhere right now and in all of the best ways. We're impressed by Simon Port Jacquemus's ability to use his own personality, personal life and exposure in building a well-known, extremely impressive luxury brand as quickly as he has. In particular, we look to their Le Bambino bag sailing across Lake Como as a tease to their latest pop-up opening. And finally, Anita Elberse, Harvard Business School Professor specialising in the business of entertainment, media, and sports - told Maurice, this week, how Harvard is being sued for discrimination against Asian-Americans. We discuss her summer program for minorities who otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity to be involved in such an institution as something made possible because of the ‘Affirmative Action' which is a sets of policies and practices within a government or organisation seeking to include particular groups based on their gender, race, sexuality, creed or nationality in areas in which such groups are underrepresented - of course, education and employment are big on this movement. Historically and internationally, support for affirmative action has sought to achieve goals such as bridging inequalities in employment and pay, increasing access to education, promoting diversity, and redressing apparent past wrongs, harms, or hindrances. We can't believe it's being challenged and consider the onslaught and affect to the world thereon.
Managing a team in good times is one skill set. But how do you motivate people when things aren't going well? Toto Wolff is the team principle and CEO of the Mercedes team, one of the most successful teams in the history of Formula One racing. But when the team's eight-year winning streak unexpectedly ended, Wolff had to adjust his leadership style to get them back on track. He tells Harvard Business School professor Anita Elberse about the difference between directing and leading, and how to help a struggling team learn from mistakes and move forward.

A Charlotte, North Carolina native, Mohamed was the second round pick for the Cleveland Browns in the 2009 NFL draft where he recorded two 100-yard receiving games his rookie year, the first Browns rookie to have two or more such games in a season since Kevin Johnson in 1999. Before joining the NFL, Mohamed earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology taking only 3.5 years from the University of Georgia where he was named the 2008 team captain, selected as a first-team All-Southeastern Conference and Academic All-SEC member, and received the team's Leon Farmer Award for his dedication to the strength and conditioning program and academics. In Spring 2017, while riding ATVs with friends Mohamed, was involved in an accident that resulted in the amputation of four fingers, leaving his thumb intact. Since retiring from the NFL, Mohamed has worked at Morgan Stanley as a financial advisor and is currently a speaker and advocate for fitness, athletes in business, and amputee causes. Mohamed has been a student at the Harvard Business School, completing their Business of Entertainment, Media and Sports program and their Crossover into Business program, both led by Anita Elberse.
