Non-Human The Rendlesham Forest UFO Incidents: Forty-Two Years of Denialtells the hugely complicated story of what is now considered to be the second most famous UFO case in history after Roswell in 1947. Gary Heseltine is a former police detective and UFO investigator and researcher. He has used his skills to re-investigate the case literally from day one after the events had taken place. With over five years of research, he has examined virtually everything ever published about the case, and in the process has discovered a wealth of material. Much of which has not featured widely in the public domain, and he lays out the 'true context' around it for you, the public to read.In addition, he has collected explosive new witness testimony from many of the military personnel who were involved in the various incidents that took place, both in the forest, and on the bases in the last days of December 1980. He has also obtained amazing new military testimony from a previously unknown witness that is presented in the book for the very first time. Non-Human also delves deep into the murky 'politics' world of the Rendlesham Forest Incident, and presents information that suggests that the narrative of the case may have been 'controlled' by a small number of people for over a quarter of a century. The author also makes the argument, that both the military and governments of the UK and the US, have downplayed the true significance of the case since it became known. Non-Human lays out the best evidence for the public to see collectively for the very first time. Let the evidence fall where it falls.BioGary Heseltine is the founder and editor of UFO Truth Magazine and is based in the UK. Born in 1960, he spent 6 years in the Royal Air Force Police (1983-89) before joining the British Transport Police in 1989. He became an Advanced police interviewer of witnesses and suspects, and in that specialist role he was involved in the 2005, London Bombings terrorist enquiry, where he interviewed a number of first responding BTP officers, to three of the four crime scenes. In 2010 he was awarded the PRG Disclosure Award in Washington D.C. for his work with police officers, and in 2012 he was presented with the EXO Politics Great Britain award for his research. He then appeared at the prestigious 2013 Citizen Hearings, at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. USA, speaking on behalf of police officers worldwide. As one of nine researchers he gave testimony before the Brazilian Senate in June 2022, where he stated that he believed some UFO/UAP events were likely to be extraterrestrial or non-human in origin. He went on to become a soldier and joined the Royal Army Medical Corp and went to training in Lichfield. He inadvertently became top recruit due to a negligent discharge by a colleague. He was based in Aldershot and his experience was full on. His medical training set him up for life. He transferred from the RAMC to the Royal Military Police and was immediately posted to Northern Ireland with 176 Provost Comp. At the conclusion of his tour to Northern Ireland he was posted to Colchester to serve 156 Provost Company and the larger-than-life Staff Sgt Sam Appleyard. Having arrived in Colchester he served with Staff Sgt Sam Appleyard and remembers L/Cpl Paul Lon who was killed in action. At the conclusion of his service Mick joined Hertfordshire Police and served in Hitchin and the regime was very structured and standards were very important to him and the rest of the team. During a fit of peak Mick walked away from the job and went travelling !Having run out of money he returned to the UK and whilst driving through Hertfordshire he decided to call into the headquarters and ask for his old job back. Unbelievably they took him back into the fold. Mick thrived on proactive operations and formed a relationship with members of the British Transport Police whilst conducting operations at the local train stations. He transferred to the BTP and started at Kings Cross. As an officer Mick was one of many who dealt people who died by suicide. He recounts a tragic time in Cyprus when he was called to a head on RTC where the occupants of the vehicles were seriously injured and resulted in fatalities. He felt that he had failed at the scene( which he hadn't). and was advised that he was too emotionally attached to the incident. This advice assisted through his career until the emotional baggage became too overwhelming.Mick was having issues in the workplace that meant he went off sick. He found the senior management of BTP and Occupational Health as being underwhelming. He was accused of working outside of the job and the bullying tactics got the better of him. Mick has now retired and undertakes medical training including FREC 3 training and would welcome a meeting with the senior management from BTP Hosted on Acast. WHEN SH*T HITS THE FAN Military Martial Arts Martial Arts Unveiled: The Realities of Conflict Management and Self-Defence In the latest episode of our podcast, we delve into the intricate world of martial arts with a focus on conflict management and self-defence. Our guests, Chris Chandler and Michael from the PolArm Academy, bring a wealth of experience and knowledge, challenging conventional perceptions of martial arts training. Founded in 2005, the PolArm Academy emerged from the necessity to address the unique challenges faced by British Transport Police on the London Underground. The absence of a reactionary gap due to noise and environmental constraints led to the development of a specialised training manual that emphasised legal and medical ramifications, a perspective often overlooked in traditional martial arts. Chris Chandler, with his extensive background in police training, highlights the critical importance of understanding the legal consequences of self-defence actions. "The legal and medical ramifications are something that gets overlooked all the time," Chris explains. In real-world scenarios, excessive force can lead to legal troubles, making it imperative for martial artists to balance effective self-defence with lawful conduct. The conversation takes an insightful turn as we explore behavioural detection, a skill honed by both Chris and Michael through rigorous training, including sessions at the FBI Academy. Understanding body language and pre-emptive indicators of aggression are crucial components of their curriculum. Chris elaborates, "Only 7% are words on communication skills. The rest is tone, pitch, aggression, and movement." Mick Tully, our host, shares his own experiences with conflict management, drawing parallels with the teachings of renowned martial artists like Geoff Thompson. The discussion underscores the evolution of martial arts from a purely physical discipline to one that incorporates psychological and behavioural elements. One of the standout moments of the episode is the emphasis on the mindset required for effective self-defence. Chris and Michael stress the importance of resilience and fitness, not just for seasoned martial artists but also for civilians. The PolArm Academy's approach includes "shock treatment" to simulate real-world stress and fatigue, preparing trainees for the unpredictability of actual confrontations. The episode also touches on the challenges faced by modern law enforcement officers, who must navigate the complexities of public perception and legal scrutiny. The proliferation of mobile phones and social media means that every action is potentially recorded and analysed, adding another layer of pressure to conflict situations. As the episode draws to a close, Mick reflects on the broader implications of martial arts training. It's not just about physical prowess but also about cultivating a mindset that can handle the ethical and psychological demands of self-defence. "If you want to be a badass, become a badass," Mick aptly summarises. Whether you're a martial artist, a law enforcement officer, or simply someone interested in self-defence, this episode offers a comprehensive look at the realities of conflict management. Tune in to gain valuable insights and rethink what it means to train for real-world scenarios. Interviewed by Mick Tully who is a JKD Instructor under Guro Dan Inosanto and Rick Faye. In episode 239 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with Gary Hayes. Gary is the Co-Founder and CEO of PTSD999, which is a charity that was set up in 2015 to support those in the emergency services, and their families, living with Post Traumatic Stress. Gary lives with Complex PTSD himself and was undiagnosed for many years when he worked in the British Transport Police (BTP) as a Police Officer. Gary's journey began when he joined the Army in the mid-1980s and spent many years in non-active service. He then met his wife, who was joining the police force and he was growing tired of military life. He was encouraged to join himself and he did in 2003, passing through the recruitment process and joining the BTP. He started by policing football matches in London, largely for West Ham United before then joining a specialist counter-terrorist policing team. The year is 2005 and sadly, Gary's policing work coincided with 7/7, which is the biggest and most deadly terrorist attack that has hit London in recent memory. 52 people were killed in bombings on London tubes and buses, with a second failed attack coming on 21/7. Gary was seconded to the temporary mortuary that had been set up at Charing Cross to identify the victims and spent two harrowing months going through hundreds of body parts, identifying people and notifying their families. This work had a huge impact on Gary's mental health and he began to go off the rails, drinking heavily to cope with the horrors of what he saw. Fast forward to the 2012 Olympics and at this point, Gary felt ‘broken'. He got into an altercation with a member of the public whilst off-duty and he was suspended from work and given the ultimatum of either resigning or going to a tribunal and risk losing his pension. Sadly, after 11 years of policing, he made the decision to resign and his mental health spiralled further. He made a plan to take his own life and came extremely close to doing it. Thankfully, something stopped him from doing it. He told his wife and that moment of rock bottom was the start of his journey to recovery to where he is now and the work he does with PTSD999. In this episode we discuss his career in the military, police to the work he does with PTSD999 now, PTSD and the mental health state of men like him in the emergency services. For Gary's mental health, he was sexually abused by two men in his childhood, firstly a babysitter when he was just six years old and the second was a football coach when he was eight years old. This abuse had a monumental impact on Gary and were suppressed memories for many years. We discuss this, the suicide attempt he made after resigning from the British Transport Police, the dark and ugly side of mental illness and the recovery journey to where he is now. ShownotesThe Elephant in the Room podcast was in hibernation in December and January. We are back this week with our first episode of the year with the indomitable Ritika Wadhwa. Ritika Wadhwa is a strategic advisory board member for British Transport Police, is a Fellow at the Society of Leadership Fellows, Windsor Castle, a Board Director and Trustee of the 5% club. But, above all of that she is an accomplished, kind and hugely generous person - opening up her networks to all who need it (including me). There is a beautiful story behind the name of her consultancy Prabhaav Global and also her brand colours (listen to the podcast to know more). She is one of the many people I follow on LinkedIn and early last year I invited her to be a guest on my podcast. By the time we actually recorded the podcast episode it was October (I think) - the timing was perfect though. She had taken a proverbial leap of faith and launched her consultancy Prabhaav Global - on a mission to cultivate cultural intelligence amongst individuals and organisations. When we finally caught up we spoke about cultural intelligence, her journey to entrepreneurship, working with a global brand like ASOS, intent and impact, culture and identity, leadership and much much more……“When I decided to call it Prabhaav Global, a lot of people were giving me their feedback to say, why make it difficult? And I said, difficult for who? Because Prabhaav speaks to me. Prabhav means impact in Hindi. And that's what I want to do. That's me, that's my identity. That's my language. And I'm done with fitting in. I'm done with trying to be someone I'm not yet again. So I said, that's it. I'm going to call it Prabhaav Global. The colours of the company are going to be turmeric because I love yellow. After a break of seven years playing assorted television roles including ‘difficult' mothers in Succession and Ted Lasso, she's back treading the boards and once again playing a formidable matriarch. She joins Clare McDonnell in the studio to talk about her career so far, as well as her newest role. As of today, police in Northern Ireland can now charge people with upskirting, downblousing and cyber-flashing. At the same time, British Transport Police are encouraging women to lower their tolerance for sexual harassment during their commute and report minor offenders more often. So is recognition of so-called 'minor' sexual offences improving? Clare speaks to Naomi Long, Leader of the Alliance Party and former Northern Ireland Justice Minister, and to women's rights activist Zan Moon. What do women look for in a bra after breast cancer surgery? Clare is joined by Katy Marks, an architect by trade, who discovered after her single mastectomy that there was no bra on the market that was flat on one side. She didn't want to use a prosthetic and so designed her own, called Uno, which launches today. She'll be joined on the programme by Asmaa Al-allak who won this year's Great British Sewing Bee and is a consultant breast surgeon who has made post-surgery lingerie for her patients. Runner Eilish McColgan follows in the footsteps of her mother Liz McColgan in the pursuit of sporting greatness. Now she's made a documentary telling their story, looking at their relationship and charting the times Eilish has broken her mother's records – all except the marathon. Eilish joins Clare to talk about making the documentary, as well as the pressures and benefits of following in the family business.

Crime on London's tube network has soared by nearly 40 per cent above its pre-Covid levels and fare-dodging has hit a record high.Transport for London data reveals a total of 10,420 crimes were recorded on the London Underground between last December and May, fuelled by a four-fold increase in robbery and a 66 per cent spike in thefts. On the bus network, victims of sexual offences on bus were overwhelmingly female, and typically aged 12 to 30 years, with schoolgirls accounting for a “substantial” number of people targeted in attacks investigated by British Transport Police. So what's behind this post-pandemic soaring crime rate - and where are the worst station hotspots where passengers should be extra vigilant when travelling?Evening Standard transport editor Ross Lydall has been examining the data and joins the Leader podcast to discuss what's behind the shocking figures. Episode Bio: In this episode your hosts Gary & Shona Allen welcome special guest Gary Heseltine..Gary is a former British Police Officer, Editor of UFO Truth Magazine, creator of PRUFOS (Police Reporting UFO Sightings) database, UFO researcher and author. Gary will be discussing with us his own UFO experience, research and his fascinating new book 'Non-Human: The Rendlesham Forest UFO Incidents: 42 Years of Denial' Guest bio: Gary Heseltine was born in 1960 in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, England. Between 1983-89 he served in the Royal Air Force as a police officer. In 1989 he joined the British Transport Police where he had an almost 24 year career before retiring early to follow his passion for UFO research. For 19 years he was a Detective Constable, working on all manner of inquiries from murder, manslaughter to rape. He was also an Advanced police interviewer of suspects and witnesses. In the summer of 1976 Gary Heseltine had an encounter that would fundamentally change his life. He was to experience something that would change his perception of the universe and man's place within it. In simple terms he had a UFO encounter that sowed the seeds in an ever widening ripple effect that would eventually pull him into the field of ufology to the extent that it has become the all pervading theme of his life. In November 2001, Gary woke up with the germ of an idea to create an unofficial database for UK police officers to record and collate their sightings. The database didn't have a name at that point but the basic idea would be to record 'on and off' duty sightings made by serving and retired officers. PRUFOS (Police Reporting UFO Sightings) database was born. The database (note: some cases are not listed yet) contains details of around 550 cases going back to 1901 involving approximately 1,100 British police officers. In June 2022, he was one of nine researchers to give testimony before the Brazilian Senate on UAPs. Gary is also the Vice President of ICER (International Coalition for Extraterrestrial Research), a not-for-profit international NGO, composed of scientists, academics and leading UFO/UAP researchers. It currently has national representatives in 30 countries. This week the I am reading from Gary Heseltine's book 'NON-HUMAN: The Rendlesham Forest UFO Incidents: 42 Years of Denial' and Terry Lovelace's book 'FREE FALL: An American Near-Death Experience'.Gary HeseltineNon-Human The Rendlesham Forest UFO Incidents: Forty-Two Years of Denialtells the hugely complicated story of what is now considered to be the second most famous UFO case in history after Roswell in 1947. He went on to complete an almost 24 year career before retiring early in 2013 to follow his passion for researching UFOs. For most of his police service he served as a Detective Constable, working on all manner of enquiries including murder, manslaughter and rape. Amazon https://rb.gy/8oz1wwww.ufotruthmagazine.co.uk www.prufospolicedatabase.co.ukTerry LovelaceThis week I am talking to Terry Lovelace about his book 'FREE FALL: An American Near-Death Experience'.Nearing seventy years of age, I am a retired lawyer, former assistant attorney general, and bestselling author. I've never had a near-death experience. I experienced the phenomenon vicariously through two very credible women who've made this extraordinary journey firsthand. It's my great privilege to share their stories in this compilation narrative. Both contributors are medical doctors aged 48 and 62 years. Both were without a heartbeat for four and thirty-two minutes, respectively, before being resuscitated. Both returned to this life with enhanced psychic and mediumship abilities. One donates her increased intuitive skills to law enforcement to help find missing children. Both have lost all fear of dying, and as a result, they likewise lost all fear of living. I think the latter is the greater gift. As a former agnostic, these stories changed my view of the afterlife. They confirm for me the existence of a divine creator, whether called God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Great Spirit, Source, the Universe, Consciousness, or any of the hundreds of names used across the world and in various faiths and cultures.BioTerry Lovelace is a six year veteran of the USAF where he served as a medic and EMT from 1973 to 1979. He has a bachelor's degree in psychology with honors from Park University in Kansas City, Missouri. He completed a law degree from Western Michigan and passed the Michigan State Bar Examination. He was also admitted to the bar in Vermont and the US Territory of American Samoa. His legal career began in private practice until his appointment as an assistant attorney general for the U.S. Territory of American Samoa, he also served as State's Attorney for Vermont Board of Medical Practice until his 2012 retirement. He and a friend were abducted from Devils Den State Park in NW Arkansas in June 1977 while remote camping. They were both on active duty at the time. What followed were 40+ years of nightmares, phobias, and PTSD-like issues which continue to this day. In 2012 a routine leg x-ray discovered two anomalous objects in his leg. The x-rays are on his website at terrylovelace.com. That event was his catalyst to write two books and speak publicly about his experiences. For fear of losing his job and the respect of his peers in the legal community, he waited until 2018 to self-publish INCIDENT AT DEVILS DEN, a #1 Bestseller on Amazon with 700+ Reviews at 4.8/5.0. His second book, DEVILS DEN: THE RECKONING was published the week of Christmas 2020. It was #1 in New Releases immediately and hit #1 Bestseller status on February 10th. He was a guest lecturer with Leslie Kean, Author and NY Times contributor at Rice University in Houston, Texas in November 2019.He's spoken at the UFO Congress in 2018, Contact in the Desert in 2019 and 2021, The Roswell UFO Festival 2019, UFO Con in Dallas in 2020, Alien Con in San Francisco in 2020, The Ascension Conference in Sedona in 2021, and the Ozark Digital Conference in 2021. His story was featured on a television episode of the Travel Channel's “MY HORROR STORY” which originally aired in November 2019, and “UFO ENCOUNTERS” aired in Canada in August 2021.Terry is a graduate of THE WELLNESS INSTITUTE in Graham, Washington where he successfully completed their program in hypnotherapy. He is currently performing hypnotherapy for experiencers who are struggling with memories from an ET encounter. Gary Hayes was born in the East End of London. His family moved to Dagenham where he was raised by his parents who still live in the area.At the age of 17 Gary was preparing himself to join the Royal Green Jackets. Having joined the Army he served in Germany and left the military after 3 years.Gary ran his own business and was involved in the close protection of a number of high profile figures from the world of sport and entertainment including Jerry Lee Lewis. His business partner removed the companies assets and left the UK. Gary was left to deal with the aftermath.Gary eventually joined the British Transport Police and his career was exciting and full of the incidents you would expect for the British Police at that time, until 7th July 2005. This was the day that terrorists carried out their attacks on the transport network in London, a date that will remain in Gary's mind for the rest of his life. Following the attack he was tasked with assisting in the temporary mortuary where the bodies of the bombings were taken following their recovery from the Tube and buses that had been targeted by the terrorists. Gary describes how he assisted in the identification process and hands the remains of eh cowards who carried out the atrocity to the hostile undertakers.During the interview Gary shares his views on stop and search and includes his personal knowledge of knife crime and dealing with the victim of a fatal stabbing. He will also describe how he was involved in an off duty incident that resulted in him standing trial for assault where he was convicted. This resulted in him losing his job despite the fact he had PTSD. The judge identified that he was suffering and as a result gary did not go to prison. The way in which his forces professional standards team conducted themselves still causes Gary anxiety.Gary is the Co-Founder of PTSD999 and gives talks and guidance to organisation including the Police, Military and Fire servicewww.ptsd999.org.uk/www.facebook.com/ptsd999officialhttps://twitter.com/ptsd999The team can be contacted on 07957 252955 Hosted on Acast. Gary was born in 1960 in Scunthorpe in Lincolnshire. He served in the Royal Air Force Police (1983-1989) before spending an almost 24 year career in the British Transport Police (1989-2013). Gary was a Home Office trained Detective Constable for 19 years working on all manner of enquiries including murder, manslaughter and rape. He was an advanced police interviewer of witnesses and suspects and involved in the London Bombings terrorist enquiry as a specialist interviewer of first responding police officers. In January 2002 and whilst still a serving police officer he launched an unofficial national database for police officers reporting UFO sightings in the UK. Following the sudden death of UFO Magazine editor Graham Birdsall in September 2003 Gary launched his own online ezine called UFO Monthly which ran for 41 issues between 2004-2007. He then spent 12 months as the co-editor of UFO Data Magazine (2008), a subscription based printed magazine. In 2010 he was presented with the PRG World Disclosure Award in Washington D.C. by Steve Bassett. In 2012 he was given the Exopolitics Great Britain Award. In April 2013 he gave testimony on behalf of police officers worldwide about their UFO experiences at the Citizen's Hearings at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. He is also one of the leading researchers in the Rendlesham Forest incident, Britain's most famous UFO case. He is currently the lead researcher and co-writer of a major independent feature length documentary called Capel Green that is currently in production in the UK and the USA and due for release in 2019. Based on his police experience Gary has examined the best evidence from around the world and concluded, on a circumstantial evidence basis, that some UFO sightings involve extraterrestrials who are interacting with planet Earth. As a result of this belief he retired early from the police in 2013 to create and launch UFO Truth Magazine, a 96 page bi-monthly ezine and created especially for those people who believe that some UFO incidents involve ET. The ezine features articles by many of the world's leading researchers including Stanton Friedman (Can/US), AJ Gevaerd (Brazil), Steve Bassett (US), Grant Cameron (Can), Bill Chalker (Australia), Mary Rodwell (Australia), Suzanne Hansen (New Zealand) and Tim Good (UK) to name but a few. In April, 2013 he spoke on behalf of police officers worldwide (who had experienced UFO sightings) at the Citizens Hearings at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. The magazine holds two international conferences per year in London and Holmfirth, West Yorkshire respectively. I am the co-writer and lead researcher of a new independent feature length documentary on the Rendlesham Forest incident called Capel Green which is set for a 2019 release. He is also a screenwriter with four feature length screenplays to date and one short screenplay for an animated feature. His latest feature length screenplay (2019) *Eleven Brothers is based on a unique piece of football history (soccer) from 1914 when a family of 11 sons played against another family of 11 sons in the months prior to the outbreak of World War One. The story combines two timelines in flashback through the eyes of the mother of one of the families and through the eyes of one of her sons who fought through the horrors of the trenches. Visit our website https://psycho-killer.co for exclusive videos, photos, articles, and transcripts. In straight-laced Victorian Britain, the railway line between London and the seaside town of Brighton was a bordello on wheels. Inevitably, the secret trysts and dodgy deals conducted in its curtained carriages led to some unsavoury crimes. A series of murders on the Brighton Line shocked polite society and some remain unsolved to this day. Others saw their perpetrators sent to the gallows. Brighton's reputation as a Bohemian playground was matched only by the town's notoriety for violence. The curious characters of Grahame Green's novel Brighton Rock were typical of those Simon Ford and detective Jacques Morrell encountered on this journey through the archives. The Six O'clock Knock is a Psycho Killer production.TranscriptHello and welcome to the Six O'clock Knock, the true-crime podcast that takes a fresh look at murder I'm Jacques Morrell I served as a police officer from 1985 to 2015. my last 12 years in the job was spent exclusively dealing with homicides as a detective sergeant and I'm Simon Ford a journalist and writer I have years of experience in radio and broadcasting I still have a nose for a good story and Jacques is still keen to apply his copper's brain to cases whether solved or not that's right and this episode will focus on murder on the railway of course we touched on the railways a few episodes back didn't we the Frederick Deeming case serial swindler and bigamist with a parshan for murdering his wives yes indeed he used the opportunity to travel that steam trains and steamships gave 19th century society he travelled extensively and he used a different name in every town the Victorian era meant that travel was so much easier and quicker the railways had revolutionized transport replacing those horse-drawn stage coaches that up to then were the quickest way to get from one town to another right mass travel had arrived passengers were less conspicuous traveling in greater numbers the commute had arrived and with it the travelling criminal yeah we're looking at this subject after someone suggested a particular case known as the murder on the Brighton line but when we started digging we found two others on the same stretch of railway line between London and Brighton well as your fellow journalist the late Sir Harry Evans said keep digging the truth is down there somewhere wow it's not often I mentioned in the same breath as the late great Harry Evans so um thanks for that mate and in terms of the truth yes it certainly is so we're going to dig into all those grisly crimes and trust me they are grisly Jacques did you ever deal with any railway cases well not really because railways in the UK have their own police the British Transport Police, or BTP, we occasionally asked them for information or made inquiries relating to people moving through railway premises but to be honest we really saw BTP officers at our police stations well the British transport police force has its roots very early in the history of British policing the earliest record of railway police predates the formation of the metropolitan police usually recognized as the first modern police force in England and Wales by at least four years no one knows just how many individual railway dock and canal police forces existed in the 19th century but they probably numbered over a hundred largely unsung and in many cases unremembered I suppose a modern equivalent would be private security firms in the united states safeguarding the interests and assets of corporations these early forces combined to form the modern BTP we looked at the recent crime figures for the BTP there was a significant rise in all crimes of 12 percent in 2019 Adrian Han stock the deputy chief constable said the record number of passengers using the railways was behind the jump in crime rates which were mainly theft and anti-social behaviour Hanstock put a lot of this down to the fact that railway stations are becoming increasingly commercial environments well that's certainly true anyone familiar with some pancreas station in London will know that the original storage areas below platform level they're now a stylish shopping centre and the Victorian booking office is a bar and a restaurant the force also reported a surge in the number of vulnerable people it dealt with including through providing mental health support officers and rail staff performed 2529 life-saving interventions up 32 percent on the year before despite this there were only six homicides on the British railway network in 2018 to 19. one was the awful death of 51 year old Lee Pomeroy who was stabbed to death by a paranoid schizophrenic after an argument on a train maybe there is an argument for the BPT to be amalgamated into the regional forces to share experience and intelligence public transport will only increase in the years to come integrated management of our transport network imagine that so do criminals use the rail network as a way of getting about or do they prefer to use the roads instead well of course they use both but you know over the years I've thought about how the world has changed not just in a policing sense but how society has changed in how it moves around if I'm completely honest the core has a lot to answer for this may be just my opinion but the car has made us selfish and anti-social we treat the car as an extension of our private lives whilst it's given us choice and freedom to move around when we want to we seem to enjoy the anonymity that the car brings us and as policing has taught me the public don't like it when they're challenged do they no I suppose not we all resent being stopped by the police or getting a fixed penalty notice through the post I know I do how dare they take a photo of me driving through that red traffic light not that I make a habit of it incidentally I suppose the car has also allowed criminals to operate in even wider areas and as you say Jacques being less conspicuous you're spot on burglars are the best example dwelling house burglars usually have a rule of not [ __ ] on their own doorstep they prefer to steal from neighbouring estates or areas they were passing through they always had a problem though how to transport their ill-gotten gains now jewellery and cash is not a problem electrical goods not so easy the car changed all that not only does the car provide transport and storage they don't stand out or look out of place do they it's just another car driving on a public road privacy no interaction with the public yeah I get it I'm trying to imagine myself as a burglar and having to use public transport while carrying the contents of somebody else's house with me I've got a heavy hold all bulging with jewellery and ornaments candlesticks that sort of thing a Sony PlayStation and I'm having to plan my getaway so 10 minute walk to the station buy a ticket wait around a bit I'm restricted by the timetable several people might see me look at me heavens even speak to me that's it and the car changed all that within a couple of hours at any time of day a criminal could drive to another town commit a crime drive to a different town dispose of the goods then return home the risks of being stopped by the police you'd take your chance even if the police showed an interest in you, you could hide any evidence in the worst case scenario you could fail to stop for them and try and get away yeah I see what you mean there the car allows people to move around unnoticed at a time to suit them protected by a metal shell things were very different 140 years ago it is 1881. the telephone has not long been invented Matthew Webb has recently swung the English channel and unwittingly his image has made it onto millions of matchboxes the first Boer war has just ended in south Africa where the British got their butts kicked two years ago 75 people died in the Tay bridge railway disaster in Scotland this case is much further south almost as far south as you can get on the British mainland in Brighton on the south coast of England [Music] the London and Brighton railway opened in 1841 and it brought Brighton within the reach of day-trippers from London the population grew from around seven thousand in eighteen hundred and one to more than a hundred and twenty thousand by nineteen hundred and one in 1881 there was overcrowding and disease clean water and sanitation would desperately needed just 47 miles from London the train was popular the regular service to the capital went to Croydon and then split into two one line to London Victoria and the other to London bridge stations on the route from London included East Croydon, Three Bridges, Hayward's Heath, Willsfield, Burgess Hill, Hassocks and Preston park. It's Monday the 27th of June at 2pm Preston park is a small quiet station serving a village on the outskirts of Brighton the ticket collector watches the arrival of the train from London bridge a male passenger gets off there's something about him that draws the ticket collector's attention the man emerges from the first class compartment and steps onto the platform he seems unsteady on his feet he's not wearing a hat which is unusual nor is he wearing the collar and tie even more concerning he's covered in blood he seems distressed the collector goes to his assistants the man mumbled something about having been attacked as the train entered Merced tunnel now Merston tunnel is just south of Croydon and several stops from Preston park probably a 30 minute journey Read more: https://bit.ly/brighton-line-transcript
This week, the Royal College of GPs is marking 150 years of women in general practice. More than half of GPs in the UK are women - but despite this, many still face issues like lower pay compared to men in their field. President of the College, Dr Amanda Howe and GP trainee, Dr Sophie Lumley join Emma to discuss why general practice is so appealing to women - and if they should continue to fill the ranks. Lucy D'Orsi, the new Chief Constable of the British Transport police is declaring a ‘zero tolerance' policy on sexual harassment. She tells us why she wants to make tackling the problem a priority and for all of us to call out bad behaviour. In June 1953 Ethel and her husband, Julius Rosenberg were executed for spying, for allegedly passing atomic secrets to the Soviet Union. Their story gripped the American imagination and has inspired novels, plays and even non fiction. We hear from the author Anne Sebba who's written a new biography about Ethel Rosenberg, the first in 40 years. It's the time of year, when more of your body is on show and you might head to your local beauticians for a wax or pedicure or other treatment. How do you react when your teen or tween is starting to show an interest? What would you say if your 12 year old wanted to shave her legs or get rid of unwanted hair on her face or body? What about treatments like facials or if they asked to get things like eyelash extensions. Treatments are often now marketed as mother/daughter bonding experiences. How do you feel about that? Do you think there are other activities we should be encouraged to bond over. When's the right time and what's the right way to talk to your child about beauty treatments - if you should at all. Gary served in the military and the British Transport Police. He was a frontline worker in the aftermath of the 7/7 bombings and is haunted by some of the tragic things he has seen as part of his job. As mentioned in the podcast, here is the link for the charity that Gary runs. https://www.ptsd999.org.uk/ Claudia Winkleman and Professor Tanya Byron identify struggles faced by real-life parents and family members by inviting them in and hearing their story, in a one-time unscripted session with a real person. Claudia listens in to the conversation to discover how Tanya begins to unlock the story behind the issue and help find solutions. With topics ranging from parental estrangement, gender identity, domestic violence, trauma, inheriting mental health issues, family dynamics after cancer and raising a severely disabled daughter, How Did We Get Here? is a passionate, insightful and moving experience with clear outcomes to each episode. This podcast doesn't tell people how to raise their children, or reconnect with family members, rather it helps people understand why, as perfectly competent adults, they can't put into practice what they know they should do. We spoke to Lucy D'Orsi, Chief Constable of the British Transport Police, and Inga Beale, London First Board member and former CEO of Lloyd's of London, about the value of good leadership, drawing on their experience of exchanging expertise across policing and business as part of London First's Leadership Exchange. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the Leadership Exchange matches leaders from different organisations and cultures to provide a confidential sounding board for exploring shared challenges. Lucy and Inga shared how working together has shaped their outlook and leadership style.

Welcome to a new episode of Time To Talk with Alex Reads. I am your host Alex Reads, and I am bringing you mental health and emotional wellbeing content that I hope will be of some benefit to you, so I am glad to have you here with me!This week is Mental Health Awareness Week, and the theme this year is KINDNESS. I will be posting content throughout the week to support this, as I think we can always use a little room to be kinder in our lives. In a three-part series, I have teamed up with Samaritans, Network Rail and Office of Rail and Road to bring to you some conversations about mental health in the context of suicide prevention on the Nation’s railways. I am speaking to key players from mental health charity Samaritans, Network Rail and Office of Rail and Road in these first series of episodes to talk about their joint efforts with the Samaritan’s campaign ‘Small Talk Saves Lives’, a campaign. Small Talk Saves Lives is a campaign to empower the public to act to prevent suicide on the railways and other settings. Suicide is preventable and suicidal thoughts are often temporary and can be interrupted. Samaritans want to give as many people as possible the skills to notice if someone might be at risk and give them the confidence to approach them. A simple question or observation can be all it takes to interrupt suicidal thoughts and start the journey to recovery. Throughout this campaign, Samaritans is reminding people that they already know how to start a conversation, giving them the confidence to act.Research carried out jointly for Samaritans and the rail industry by the Universities of Middlesex and Westminster indicated that a ‘bystander’ campaign could be valuable as the public has a role to play in suicide prevention on the railways. And so, the partnership with British Transport Police, Network Rail and the wider rail industry to develop the campaign has been beneficial. They train thousands of rail staff in suicide prevention every year. Many of them go on to make an intervention and save a life. We encourage staff to notice if someone may be at risk and then start a conversation by asking a simple question, so making small talk.We have also consulted individuals who have experienced suicidal thoughts, those who have lost loved ones to suicide, people who regularly travel by train, and the general public. We wanted to make sure we considered a range of experiences when developing the campaign. An example of the importance of our campaign is Sarah's story. A stranger on a train platform helped stop Sarah from taking her own life. With Sarah's permission, we used her story to develop the first phase of the campaign and show others how small talk saved her life.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ORR - Office of Rail and Road - Ian Prosser, Chief inspector of railways and directorIan is the chief inspector of railways and director, railway safety at the Office of Rail and Road.Drop me an email: tttalkpod@gmail.com

A British railway ticket office worker has died from Covid-19 after being spat on while she was working at Victoria station in central London.Belly Mujinga, 47, was working with a colleague when a member of the public assaulted them, spat and coughed over them and said he had the novel coronavirus, said her union, the Transport Salaried Staffs Association (TSSA), in a statement Tuesday.Mujinga, who had an underlying health condition, was working for Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) on the station concourse at the time of the incident on March 22.British Transport Police said in a statement to CNN that an investigation into the incident had been launched."Belly and her colleague begged to be let to work from inside the building with a protective barrier between them and the public for the rest of that day," TSSA said in its statement."Management said they needed people working outside and sent them back out onto the concourse for the rest of their shift."Both women went back outside and completed their shift, added the union, but they had no personal protective equipment.Mujinga had underlying respiratory problems for which she had had an operation, regular hospital appointments and had previously needed to take time off work, according to TSSA.The union says GTR knew about her condition and, even after the incident, only stood Mujinga down after her doctor called her work around March 25.Manuel Cortes, TSSA general secretary, accused GTR of not taking Mujinga's assault "seriously enough" and criticized the company."As a vulnerable person in the 'at risk' category and her condition known to her employer, there are questions about why GTR didn't stand her down from front line duties early on in this pandemic," Cortes said in the TSSA statement. "There are serious questions about her death, it wasn't inevitable."GTR is investigating the accusations, it said in a statement to CNN on Tuesday, adding it takes the allegations "extremely seriously.""The safety of our customers and staff, who are key workers themselves, continues to be front of mind at all times and we follow the latest Government advice," Angie Doll, managing director at Southern Railway and Gatwick Express, said in the statement."We are devastated that our dedicated colleague Belly has passed away and our deepest sympathies are with her family, with whom we have been in touch through this very difficult time," she also said. Both Mujinga and her colleague fell ill from Covid-19 within days of the assault, according to TSSA.On April 2 -- just 11 days after the incident -- Mujinga was taken to Barnet Hospital, north London, in an ambulance and put on a ventilator."Belly died on 5 April, 14 days after she was assaulted at Victoria station," TSSA said. She leaves behind an 11-year-old daughter and a husband, who last saw her when she was taken away by ambulance, the union added."We are shocked and devastated at Belly's death," Cortes said in the TSSA statement. The union said it is taking legal advice on the situation and supporting Mujinga's family and colleagues. It also reported the incident to the Railways Inspectorate, the safety arm of the Office for Road and Rail (ORR).An ORR spokesperson told CNN the office is investigating the incident.TSSA revealed Mujinga's story as the British Government urged some people to return to work if they are not able do so from home, easing some of the restrictions it had put in place to stop the spread of Covid-19.The union says there is not enough guidance or protection for workers on the front line, such as Mujinga."Rather than talking about the easing the lockdown, the government must first ensure that the right precautions and protections have been taken so that more lives are not lost," Cortes said."Our rail industry needs to have a very serious look at what tasks are deemed 'essential' and must put protections in place for all our members and our passengers."The TSSA also called on the government t...

Angry commuters scuffled with climate activists who climbed onto the roofs of trains early Thursday, snarling services in the busy morning rush hours in the British capital.Londoners have largely tolerated a series of peaceful protests in recent days by the Extinction Rebellion group, but interfering with workers' morning commute appeared to be a step too far for some.Television images showed at least one man reaching up and grabbing the leg of a protester on top of a Tube train, dragging him onto the platform where he was quickly surrounded as he lay on the ground.British Transport Police say they were called to three stations in east London early Thursday after protesters climbed onto the roofs of trains or glued themselves to the carriages.Robin Boardman, a spokesman for the protesters, said that if such action is necessary to make the government take notice of their climate change demands, "then this is what we must do.""None of us want to inconvenience ordinary people," he said. "That's why we're doing this in the morning when it will impact business as usual, and not in the evening, when people want to get home to be with their loved ones."Police arrested a total of eight people and urged protesters not to target London's underground rail network.London Mayor Sadiq Khan condemned the protesters."This illegal action is extremely dangerous, counterproductive and is causing unacceptable disruption to Londoners who use public transport to get to work," he said.More than 1,400 people have been arrested since the group began blocking roads, bridges and airports in London over a week ago to demand faster action on climate change. Most have been released without being charged.- AP

Gareth Roberts is joined by Amanda Jacks, a caseworker for The Football Supporters' Federation who helps fans with policing and stewarding issues. The standard of stewarding is discussed, alongside a recent documentary screened on Channel 4 which focused on fans and "trouble on the trains". It's the third in a series of podcasts focusing on perception of football fans, how they are policed and stewarded, and how they are portrayed by the media. We've previously spoken to Chief Superintendent Owen West about policing methods, which you can listen to free here https://www.theanfieldwrap.com/2017/10/cup-tea-chief-superintendent-owen-west/ and Professor Clifford Stott, who researches police and crowd behaviour. Find local support http://www.iasp.info/resources/Crisis_Centres/ #suicideprevention #livedexp Transcript: As someone whose family has been touched by suicide as well as a communications professional whose job it is to translate the work of those in the suicide prevention sector, I often feel like my emotions are fluctuating somewhere between heartbreak and hope. Never has this been more true than at The Alliance of Suicide Prevention Charities (TASC) quarterly meeting I attended last week. I was honoured to be invited to attend this meeting in central London to learn more about the group’s history, current work and future objectives. I was also invited to share Australian successes and challenges in suicide prevention and talk through Suicide Prevention Australia projects and our members’ work. The Alliance of Suicide Prevention Charities (TASC) is an alliance of the leading charities dealing with suicide prevention and mental health issues. On their website, they state that “TASC believes that, while not every suicide is preventable, many of the thousands that occur each year could have been prevented, had the appropriate help and resources been available. The stigma & taboo surrounding mental health and suicide mean that, all too often, suicide is seen as an inevitable consequence of a particular weakness inherent in the individual. We know that this isn’t the case. Frequently, our healthcare and social checks fail those clearly in need or asking for help. We believe that suicide is a serious health issue, and, more broadly, that mental health should be given the same emphasis as physical health.” TASC came together as an initiative to encourage collaboration and prevent duplication of efforts and funding in the area of suicide research and prevention. It was set up in November 2010 and holds quarterly meetings to discuss common goals, current research and future actions. The aims of this group are: To share and provide information To collaborate on effective interventions To influence policy makers and the media. You can read more about the TASC on their website. For now, let me share a few things that stood out for me in the meeting: “The head and the heart must work together” At either end of the meeting table were two individuals that, for me, really put this statement into perspective. At one end of the table sat a gentleman who had lost his son to suicide, a bereaved father passionate about making real change to how those in crisis and in immediate danger of suicide are supported to live. I could feel his pain, frustration and absolute determination in every word he spoke, a mix of drive and emotion shown by many of those at the TASC meeting who have been touched by suicide. At the other end of the table sat a representative from British Transport Police, an officer there to update us on the work being done at rail stations in particular to prevent suicides and care for all those impacted by suicide, from those at risk to their loved ones, as well as rail employees. This was, in part, quite similar to the work in Australia done by our friends at TrackSafe in partnership with R U OK? The care and compassion with which she spoke was so impressive, as were the changes they have been making in the workplace to prevent suicide and suppo...
