It's a sacred podcasting ritual, like pissing in the same spot. Welcome back to the Describing the Skybox podcast! Today, we're looking at a sequel to one of our most surprisingly liked games from a few years ago. Perfect Tides: Station to Station is a narrative adventure game and direct sequel to Perfect Tides which focuses on the same protagonist, Mara Whitefish, just a few years older as she enters college. The character writing that was at the center of our enjoyment of the first game is in full force again here, Mara's maturation is apparent and feels very natural. She feels very much like the same character growing up in a very realistic way. Her issues are still at the forefront of the game, dealing with the stress of college work, but with a big focus on her romantic and social life. The character writing takes center stage here and is the reason you will want to continue playing the game. The mechanical side of things is much lighter this time around, with the point and click adventure game mechanics mostly removed entirely, your interaction is much lighter now focusing around talking to people, gathering information, and writing papers using a simple two-topic system that ultimately doesn't seem to have much impact on the overall experience. Still, you just sort of have to trust me when I say that doesn't matter too much if the narrative parts of the game are what you're here for, which you should be. We're going to be talking about the very human way characters are written, the game's themes of love, art and self, and when someone gets a new pet that is the same as their old pet. You may say I'm a podcast, but I'm not the only one. Welcome back to Describing the Skybox! This week for our second episode of Mystery May this year, the die has decided we play Dreams, the game development software slash game on the Playstation 4 (and 5). Dreams is an odd one to talk about in our format to some degree, as a lot of what defines what this game is is tied up in the tools it provides for designing not just logic but also 3D models and music, which are robust in their capabilities but weirdly restricted to being used with a controller. It is difficult to get used to, but surprisingly capable once you do. Additionally though, Dreams is also a games browser with surprisingly good discovery tools. So, in addition to the creation tools, we played and will discuss a number of games that reflect what you can make with the tools provided. We're going to be talking about the distinctive “Dreams-like” feeling of the games, the strengths developers can lean into and weaknesses they try to avoid, and we talk probably for too long about a meme game. Thank you for joining us again this week! Dreams was a time killer game for us a while ago so I was a little surprised at how interesting parts of it were when we took a deeper look. A great podcast has been revealed to you. Welcome back to Describing the Skybox! Today, as our first episode in Mystery May, we're going to be talking about Fez, a now shockingly 14 year old game. Fez is a puzzle platformer, emphasis on the puzzle, but not a complete dis-emphasis on the platformer, in which you move around on a 2D plane, but have the ability to rotate the play area, adding a bit of 3D thinking as well as some perspective-based puzzles to work through. This carries the game surprisingly well, with it feeling very clever but also surprisingly intuitive. Along the way, there are numerous hints and secrets to find which could lead players to an ultimate secret about the world of the game, but are more often than not just additional collectibles to pick up. This cleverness and emphasis on secrets in the exploration are both the game's strengths and its weaknesses, as it does create an atmosphere that makes you want to explore, bolstered by the fun, cartoony art direction, but also asks a lot of the player to even get from place to place. Navigating can be a little stilted as your destinations aren't clear and exits to each zone are not necessarily immediately visible with multiple angles to look through. If you're looking for a fun, light, platformer game, don't be fooled by the game's visuals and presentation, but if you want to dedicate some time, Fez does feel like a kind of pioneering game in the indie space. I can podcast it. I'll take responsibility. Welcome to the very first episode of Describing the Skybox and the first horror game episode for October! Today, we're talking about Mouthwashing, a narrative adventure game set on a freighter in space. There isn't too much in the way of interaction in this game, a few light puzzles and traversal challenges, so the story takes the spotlight for the majority of the experience. Which is entirely fine because of how well written this game is. Mouthwashing is a pretty tragic story that despite its low-fi and sometimes surreal visuals, really emphasizes the horror in the human experience, whether that comes from systemic problems or directly from another person, and the narrative does a good job of navigating its nonlinear story in a way that as each new layer is uncovered in the story it hits you in new and strange ways. The game is also short and easily played in a single, albeit somewhat long, sitting, so it can feel very tight and self contained, almost like a film. We're going to be talking about how the intro sets up different elements of the story that get paid off throughout the entire game, how the individual shots and short mechanical sections emphasize the tone of the story at each moment, and we discuss what may or may not be a womb. Did you know you can hold a podcast in your off hand? Welcome to the 200th and (kind of) final episode of NOCLIP! With it being both the 200th episode and our tenth anniversary, we figured now would be as good a time as any to finally play Minecraft, one of the most popular and the best selling game of all time, which neither of us had actually played before. Minecraft popularized the previously niche genre of survival games, captivated a huge number of people, and to some degree altered the landscape of online content creation, all while being a procedurally generated game full of blocks created predominately by one guy. Reputation of that one guy aside, it's impressive what this once small game accomplished and the culture it developed. The simplicity of its design allows for more complexity in its systems, with hundreds (probably? Thousands maybe?) of items to craft and a huge world to plumb for resources. The game is also very self-directed, allowing for a lot of player creativity if it does leave you a little directionless at times. The world is equal parts hostile and enticing due to unforgiving enemy spawns and procedural generation, so it is up to the player to determine where and how far they want to go given their current gear and needs. We're going to be talking about the ubiquity of Minecraft in modern culture, the ups and downs of the open nature of the game, and how Minecraft is about two inputs away from a dissociative experience. Dan Berkenstock is an entrepreneur, aerospace engineer, and Stanford PhD who co-founded Skybox Imaging, a satellite imaging company acquired by Google in 2014. He is a Distinguished Research Fellow at Stanford University's Hoover Institution, focusing on space and defense policy research and recommendations. Dan sits on several boards of venture-backed aerospace start-ups and teaches aerospace entrepreneurship in the Stanford School of Engineering. On this episode of the Defense Tech Underground, Dan describes the journey of building Skybox Imaging, launching SkySat-1, and joining Google post-acquisition. He discusses his recent Hoover publication, the Defense Tech Playbook, designed to help new founders in defense build a strategic, financial path to quickly transition capabilities to the warfighter. Dan shares detailed recommendations for expanding the impact of the STRATFI program and how the DoD can better articulate demand signals to the startup ecosystem.  This episode is hosted by Helen Phillips and Jon Hoey.    Full Bio: Dan Berkenstock is a distinguished research fellow at the Hoover Institution. His work aims to ensure sustained American aerospace leadership well into the twenty-first century and provides space-related scholarship and policy recommendations through Hoover's Technology Policy Accelerator. From 2008 to 2017, Berkenstock was the founding chief executive officer, later chief product officer, of Skybox Imaging. In his policy research, Dan focuses on the critical advancements needed to reduce the risk of conflict in space during a forthcoming period of rapid expansion. His technical research focuses on expanding convex and polynomial optimization techniques to identify globally optimal vehicle designs in aerodynamic shape optimization problems, with a focus on low-observability hypersonic vehicles. At Skybox, he oversaw the fundraising of more than $100 million in venture capital, helped reset the benchmark for performance in the optical, small satellite arena, and led the company through a $500 million acquisition by Google. The twenty-one Skybox satellites continue to operate as the world's largest high-resolution commercial imaging constellation, providing timely imagery of major conflicts that is often featured in major media outlets and imagery used daily by defense and intelligence customers. For his work at Skybox, Dan was recognized as Via Satellite magazine's Satellite Executive of the Year in 2014 and was named to MIT Technology Review's “Innovators under 35” in 2011. He continues to engage with the space start-up community by serving as an independent director on several boards of venture-backed aerospace start-ups and teaching aerospace entrepreneurship in the Stanford School of Engineering. Dan completed his PhD in aeronautics and astronautics at Stanford University, where he also received a master of science. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor of science in aerospace engineering. During this time, he completed four tours as a cooperative education student at NASA's Johnson Space Center.
