As part of our esteemed guest series. I'm excited to welcome a dear friend and an incredibly insightful psychiatrist, Dr. Omid Naim.Trained in the Western traditions, Dr. Naim has evolved to embrace a more holistic approach when it comes to mental health care. He advocates for the integration of spiritual and community-based methods, emphasizing the power of connection and shared human understanding. So what does a more holistic approach to psychiatry look like? How can addressing family trauma transform our mental health? Why is the sense of community so critical for this journey?Join us as we delve into these questions and more ...This episode is not just a dialogue; it's a journey towards understanding the deeper facets of mental well-being and how they affect us and our family's. Jennifer's Takeaways:Mental health disorders and their causes (03:35)Family dynamics and mental health (06:03)Parenting stress and self-care for moms (12:15)Men's emotional struggles and parenting (18:00)Setting boundaries (23:17)Gender roles (26:13)Personal growth (31:42)Self-awareness + community building (36:01)Differences between pleasure and happiness (41:24)Self-care, and toxic shame.(46:58)About Dr. Omid NaimI was born in Tehran, Iran, just before the Iranian Revolution in 1978. This early childhood experience of societal terror and chaos shaped my appreciation for how unresolved trauma and grief have lifelong effects on individuals, families, and the community. Through the lens of my own family and community I came to witness firsthand how unacknowledged trauma can be neglected as the root cause of mental illness and other chronic health conditions in our society. Although I didn't know it then, this would become the foundation of my professional life. After completing medical school at the University of Southern California and residency training in General Adult and Child Psychiatry at USC, I began working in community mental health with high risk youth. Even though I was a classically trained Western psychiatrist, I could see that there was a need for more holistic, spiritual, and community-based approaches to health due to the limitations of the medical model. Witnessing patients with the extensive histories of abuse and neglect becoming more and more medicated – while trauma was as a root cause was ignored, and their disabilities worsened – I knew the system needed to change. This fueled my passion to find new ways to approach how we care for people and led me to further my education in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona as a Bravewell Scholar under Dr. Andrew Weil. This time spent training in Integrative Medicine laid the foundation for creating a new model for mental health which evolved into the Hope Integrative Psychiatry Clinic. At Hope, we focused on empowering our clients to tap into their capacity to heal and recover naturally and elevating our deep needs for meaning, community, and belonging as the cornerstones for emotional well-being. This practice informed an entirely new integrative model for health and led to what would become La Maida Institute. With the help of my wife, Alexis, and the team of dedicated professionals who made La Maida Institute grow, we were able to continue our private practice and develop the ecological approach with the support of a new communal model. Things were coming together in a profound way and we began to see that what we were really talking about was a paradigm shift in how society views health and well-being and how, through the formation of La Maida Project, we could truly make a meaningful impact. And the story keeps getting better and better!Omid and Alexis are parents of two children. He enjoys exploring and adventuring with his family as well as connecting with others to uncover the deeper truths of life.Connect with Dr. Omid Naim:Website: https://lamaidaproject.org/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lamaidaproject/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/lamaidaproject/Meet Jennifer KolariJennifer Kolari is the host of the “Connected Parenting” weekly podcast and the co-host of “The Mental Health Comedy” podcast. The EVAC Movement started with a group of students and our teacher, Amy Donofrio, in Jacksonville, Florida. Our class was full of conflict and divided, until we began sharing our stories, and realized our shared traumatic experiences: murdered loved ones, incarceration, and police brutality. We began not only to bond…but motivated to create change. We began by inviting police officers to class for youth-led roundtables and just over one year later, these powerful in-class discussions led to us speaking at the White House, meeting President Barack Obama, making the front page of The New York Times and winning first-place nationwide in a contest sponsored by Harvard. We share this journey in our Tedx Talk, “At-Risk or At-Hope? How We Label Youth Matters.”

What are you doing to pass on the history of God's work to the next generation? Hope Community Church Video: Weekend Messages

DNA: Week 6 – In It TogetherEvery church has certain aspects of mission and vision that are unique to each church. At Hope, we’re discussing the things that make us who we are at our very core, our DNA as a church. A core value of ours is that we are In It Together.  For a team or a family to be at its best, everyone must think ‘we over me’.John 17:20-23  Jesus wants us to be unified so that the world would know God sent Jesus and that God loved us.The story of Nehemiah gives us some essential ideas to bring us together.Nehemiah 1:3Nehemiah 1:4 There are four essentials to be In It Together.1.  We have to CARE ‘about it’.  Know what your ‘it’ is and care about it.2.  We have to be Courageous for it.Nehemiah 2:9-10Nehemiah 4:1Nehemiah 4:143.  We have to be Selfless to it.“If you want to achieve anything in life worth achieving, it will cost you something.”Nehemiah 3:1Nehemiah 3:8Nehemiah 3:13Nehemiah 7:70“If you want to achieve anything in life worth achieving, it will cost you something.”We want to reach the triangle and change the world.4.  We have to ‘Seek God through it’.Chase after big things but only do so while seeking God through it.Here are a few questions to ask: What do we really care about? What’s our ‘it’?                                                      Where do we need to be more courageous for our it? Where do I need to be more selfless in it? Am I seeking God in it?

Hope Community Church Video: Weekend Messages

Every church has certain aspects of mission and vision that are unique to each church. At Hope, we’re discussing the things that make us who we are at our very core, our DNA as a church. We need to be as relevant as possible to as many as possible and to be as effective as possible at leading as many to Jesus as possible. We strive to be Relevant and Effective.Jesus often told stories using relevant examples from His culture. His healing and miracles helped people in their greatest needs.Matthew 28:19 (NLT)  The last words Jesus said to the disciples were about going out into the world and making disciples of all people.1 Corinthians 9:1-2 (NLT)  Paul gave a short resumé of who he was, but it wasn’t enough.1 Corinthians 9:19-23 (NLT)  Paul tried to do everything he could to find common ground with everyone, so he could share the Gospel with them.Paul tried to be as relevant as possible to as many as possible and to be as effective as possible at leading as many to Jesus as possible.Eugene Peterson wrote this in the message: “I didn’t take on their way of life. I kept my bearings in Christ – but I entered their world and tried to experience things from their point of view. I’ve become just about every sort of servant there is in my attempts to lead those I meet into a God-saved life.” 1 Corinthians 9 (MSG)Two observations from Paul:1. We contextualize the Gospel. We don’t compromise it.RejectReceiveRedeem2. Our mission stays the same. The methods need to change. The bottom line is that we need to be as relevant as possible to as many as possible and to be as effective as possible at leading as many to Jesus as possible. What can we do? 1. Be relevant and effective in our Church.2. Be relevant and effective in our Community.

One of my greatest mentors, Andy Frisella, loves to make the statement - There are no cover bands in the rock and roll hall of fame. I think this applies greatly to the health paradigm we face in today's model when most of the solutions are geared at a cookie cutter approach for health found in a pill, potion, and lotion. At Hope we have a unique lane that we navigate with our patients that is aimed at respecting each person's unique health journey and human dignity. Our goal is focused on healing the whole person through optimal expression of the nervous system. In this episode we break down "No Cover Bands." Risk is the possibility that something unpleasant or unwelcome will happen. Hope is the joyful anticipation of good. We can be so aware and responsive to what we're at risk of that we lose sight of our hope. In this episode, Gabrielle starts a discussion on what is hope. Scriptures mentioned: Hebrews 6:18 - 20 TPTSo it is impossible for God to lie for we know that his promise and his vow will never change! And now we have run into his heart to hide ourselves in his faithfulness. This is where we find his strength and comfort, for he empowers us to seize what has already been established ahead of time—an unshakeable hope! We have this certain hope like a strong, unbreakable anchor holding our souls to God himself. Our anchor of hope is fastened to the mercy seat which sits in the heavenly realm beyond the sacred threshold, and where Jesus, our forerunner, has gone in before us.
