Robert Babicz on the "Virtual Sessions" presented by The DJ Sessions 12/08/21   About Robert Babicz -   SEEING SOUND, HEARING COLOURS   Robert Babicz has been redefining the boundaries of electronic music since the early 1990s. His unique artistry encompasses sound, vision, emotion and spirituality. From releasing and performing acid techno as Rob Acid, to his role as a highly-sought after producer and studio wizard infusing technical perfection with deep emotion, to his striking photos, everything Robert does expresses his desire to celebrate beauty and humanity, and to live each moment with utmost consciousness. Robert's art and philosophy are so distinctive there's a word for it: Babiczstyle.    EVOLUTION   Robert made his first record on borrowed equipment in 1992 and played his first gig on gear he'd never used before. “I had no musical background or knowledge, no clue what I was doing. I just improvised music. But for the first time in my life I was absolutely in the moment, like a special state of consciousness. And people responded – they loved and accepted me.” Like anyone experiencing a transformation, Robert wanted to do it again and again. Music was a way to rise above the struggles of daily life (in the early years of his career, he slept on a mattress on the floor of a tiny flat in his home town Cologne, his synths his only possessions) and to share the joy of that transcendence with others. Playing as Rob Acid, he ignited parties with fierce techno played by strict rules: every set was 100% live and unique, he deleted the instruments' programming immediately afterwards.   Robert's ethos, forged by these acid-drenched sonic exorcisms, is razor sharp: work hard, make mistakes, move on. His tremendous output of official releases pales beside the number he deleted in the studio because they didn't meet his exacting standards. “I'm not afraid to get rid of something that doesn't work,” he explains. “I have so many ideas. It's never quiet in my head.”    SYNAESTHESIA    Robert has the rare gift of synaesthesia, which turns the world into a continuous interplay of colour, shape and sound. He sees music in 3D, describing tracks as “geometrical poem... sculptures in time.” When he's working on a track he can see the imperfections in the sonic structure and fix them, like a painter correcting a brush stroke.    Photography is an essential component of Robert's art and his fans know and love his sensitive and dramatic photos from all over the globe as much as his music. His images are as distinctive as his tracks because, for him, a beautiful photo has its own harmony. He sees music and he hears images, allowing him to bring about a unique artistic synthesis that evokes the underlying energies and structures of the cosmos, speaking to a universal need for beauty and harmony in a fractured world.   COMMUNICATION   The power of Robert's performances are fuelled by his lack of personal ego: “I'm not playing the instruments,” he says. “The people on the dancefloor are playing me”. He's never DJ'd (“I have so many ideas, I am always trying out my own music”), packs only “underwear and my instruments” to go on tour, and has a single goal: to feel the crowd, make people forget their problems and experience pure joy on the dancefloor: “The perfect moment is when they stop caring about their job, and are in the here and now. You can see it on their faces. They let loose of everything and are completely in the present. This makes me happy.”   CRAFT   Robert continuously pushes the boundaries of electronic music as an artist, consultant, teacher, and engineer. Among Robert's more than 1000 releases are seven albums and a flood of tracks for labels including Bedrock, INTEC, Mille Plateaux, Systematic, Audiomatique, K2, Treibstoff,  SUGA, Punkt and Praxxiz. In recent years, he has focused increasingly on his own imprint, Babiczstyle, which epitomises his sound, emotions and ethos.    Robert's exceptional sound-design, mastering and studio skills have prompted companies like Native Instruments and Apple to request his help on sound-design projects. He also teaches workshops on production and his music philosophy; and is one of the electronic music world's most in-demand mastering artists. Fellow artistes from across the dance music spectrum trust Robert to perfect the technical aspects of their records while rendering the emotions and intention even clearer.    AUTHENTICITY   Babiczstyle is authenticity in action. Wherever he travels the world, Robert is instantly recognisable for his music, his warm smile, his energy, and his bright red scarf. “It's a bit like Superman's cape,” he jokes. The difference is, when Robert puts on the red scarf to perform he doesn't become someone else. Robert's superpower is the integrity of his art and vision: “I don't want to be dreamed by others,” he says. “I want to be myself.”    Facebook: facebook.com/robertbabicz  SoundCloud: soundcloud.com/robbabicz  Instagram instagram.com/robertbabicz Twitter:   @robertbabicz Bandsintown: bandsintown.com/RobertBabicz  YouTube: Robert Babicz Channel Web:  robertbabicz.de Booking World: Jon Woodall @ airlondon Booking DE: Marcel Janovsky @ WIR Booking Press:  Florian Amann @ FOEM Music Communications   About The DJ Sessions - “The DJ Sessions" is a online/downloadable series featuring the hottest electronic music DJ's with live mixes and interviews, streamed live to a global audience. So how did you meet the bass? A: When I started buying records it was more or less Techno. One of my first records was Carl Cox with ‘The End Of The Cliché’ in 1995. Mayday and Love Parade were the biggest events at that time and I was at my first Love Parade in the age of 14. Then I started buying more experimental music by Moodyman, Dr. Rockit, Etienne De Crécy and names like that. When I started DJing latin and vocal house was big. it was all about massive vocals (almost screaming) on fast organic beats produced by acts such as Kings Of Tomorrow, Jon Cutler, Ian Pooley and Masters At Work to name a few. I really liked that style of music end of the 90’s but I am not producing Latin House today, you are completely right - there is still soul in my music. My set for ‘How I Met The Bass’ is not about Latin House. It starts with a smooth soul groover by Georg Levin that I loved to play a lot when I started DJing in bars in Hamburg. Sonar Kollektiv was the label where the record came out and it was quite famous at that time and even Dixon produced music with Georg Levin on Sonar Kollektiv. When you listen to the last quarter of my set you can hear some influences in my tracks I recently put out for sure. Steve Bug, Josh Wink and the music that got released on Poker Flat, Dessous, F Communications and Ovum was my thing and most of the records they put out today are still catching me. Q: You´re releasing your music on big labels such as Suara, Green, Audiomatique, Einmusika, Soul De Anima. Any more label goals to reach? A: There are always new goals to reach - it never stops but I keep them as a secret for today and let you know when they come true Q: Which future projects are on the way? A: I have signed a follow up EP with the Lazarusman to Dave Seaman’s Selador Records and another EP together with Saccao to Lost On You records which is a label that donates all the money from the sales to children in Africa and so do I. There is a limited vinyl edition to pre-order, just have a look into my newsfeed on Facebook. Other than that I am constantly working on new tracks.

Marcus Worguli, Osunlade - Reno 11. Alex Niggemann - Boujuma (Matthias Meyer Remix) Biography: Doomwork may be summed up and identified in one single term: “unconventional”. Musically grown in the early years of the new millennium – when Italian dance had its point of apex- Alessandro and Claudio started to looking for darker sonority ; the path for the discovering of Detroit’s “Techno” music scene and its founders was short: Derrick May, Juan Atkins and Jeff Mills. Shortly after, their tin ear brought them to the so called “Big Beat” and its facets: Synth Rock, Funk, Hip Hop (Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, Prodigy). At the same time they started to be interested into the Chicago House movement, born in the first half of the 80’s. Alessandro and Claudio decided collaborating together in 2008 and thus giving start to the Doomwork project. They soon reached the top of the Beatport chart, the famous reference portal of world modern club culture, with the song “Isla” first (two months n°1 in the deep house chart),and “Jazzy Stuff” then (two months n°1 in the general chart, resulting as the top selling record of 2009) and scoring again with “Groovin” (one month n°1 in the deep house chart, boasting one of the world deep house guru’s remix: Milton Jackson). In 2010 they are among the nominees of the Beatport Awards in the “the best deep house track” session, obtaining a second price with their track “Lost in memory”. All their productions constantly get positive feedbacks from the most important djs of the techno world scene as Carl Cox, Loco Dice, Karotte, 2000andOne, Radioslave, Satoshi Tomiee and many more. Their musical output brought them not only fame, but also drawn the attention of the biggest expertise of the international “scene” : Dylan Hermelijm (aka 2000andOne), chief of Planet Gong (one of the most estimate European organization), is one of them. He decided to remix and release the track “Andromeda” on the historic dutch techno label 100%PURE. The track went “on air” on BBC radio during Pete Tong broadcast “Essential Mix”, and then was released in the compilation “Wonderland” for Pete Tong’s label “Defected Records”, “Andromeda” thus became one of the most important project of the duo. Many of their works are included in the most important compilations : Space Ibiza comp. , Privilege Ibiza comp. , Cavo Paradiso “Definitons” vol. 10 (mixed by Satoshi Tomiee) , Campari Sunset ,released by Sony Music to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the famous drink. They have been performing in clubs all over the world since 2009; Air Club (Tokio) for the Redbull Master Night, Q Club (Zurich) , Tenax ( Florence), Goa (Rome), Elrow 14 (Barcelona), Bullit Club (Monaco), are only some of the clubs the duo perfomed in. Despite this intense working period, they managed to focus on their live set, a music container that ranges from “deep” and “techno”, “electro” and “house”, “prog” and “hip hop”, and brought to life their own musical purpose, in order to create a bond between the artist and the dance floor. The project immediately received positive feedbacks, and met the dancefloor during the “Amsterdam Dance Event 2010” where it can be brought to the audience in the setting of the famous “Studio 80” . Since then it became part of the “Saw Recordings” tour, Satoshi Tomiee and Hector Romero’s label. At the end of a busy 2010, the 2011 seems to be hectic either, with the launch of their own label “Retouch Recordings”, with the new projects that seem to be more important than the previous years, a new 100%PURE release and the debut on “Audiomatique”, Steve Bug’s label (Trentemoller latest album was released on the same label, just for the record), and together with their first concept album soon to be made, we’ll hardly see them enjoying a cocktail.

Rod B. & Alvaro Garfunk bring you the Miami Underground Movement     Rob Acid, Sontec, Dicabor, Alton Inc, Acid Warrior Straight out of Cologne in 1993, under the pseudonym Rob Acid, Babicz released his first single Happy Answer on London Records, which unexpectedly became a huge club hit. With the rise of acid house influenced records dominating the charts, Babicz was able to ride high on this new wave of club culture. In addition to becoming an in demand live performer using one of his other names, Acid Warrior, Babicz started to release singles on high profile imprints like Kompakt, Treibstoff and Steve Bug’s Audiomatique, as well as his own label, Junkfood In what Rob appropriately dubs “the rave years” in the mid-nineties, he was already playing all over the world. During this time Babicz teamed up with Mate Galic and psychedelic sonic experiences of every kind followed, which as Rob himself sums up perfectly came as a result of “excessive sound-research and absurd parties… transistor radio and porn films on big screen”. His affiliation with Force Inc a few years later brought a series of more experimental, less dancefloor-orientated works which suggested his theoretical musique concrete roots. By the turn of the new millennium, Babicz was striving for a different sound and thus began a new label, Shortcut. At the same time, he received multiple requests for sound design from hard and software producers, most notably resulting in the presets he produced for Native Instruments. In 2007 Robert released his landmark record, A Cheerful Temper on Systematic Recordings, which expertly moves between electronica, techno, minimal and classic house. Playing ‘live’ has always been a key feature of Babicz’s authentic musicianship; improvising instead of reeling off pre-determined sets has made his celebrated shows unquestionably unique events. He consistently delivers astonishing performances of his own productions built around warm melodies, blissed atmospherics & analogue bass - sometimes jacking, but mostly tripping and always around the foundations of his first love: techno. Consequently, Babicz has more than proven his worth in the world of dance music and his right to the title of pioneer and innovator, whether producing tech house, minimal or acid techno. With the release of Immortal Changes in early 2010, described by DJ Mag as a “marriage of organic groove and glistening electronic melodies” it is clear that Robert Babicz still has much more to give… Playlist: Intro r.babicz - remote kiss ( babiczstyle) r.babicz - the sun ( babiczsyle ) r.babicz - dark flower (fever album mix) ( systematic ) g.boratto - i feel ( babicz earth remix ) ( defray ) r.babicz - percofonik ( babiczstyle ) r.babicz - storm lunch ( babiczstyle ) r.babicz - astor (g.boratto rmx) ( systematic ) r.babicz - come closer ( lost babicz mix ) ( systematic ) r.babicz - simple feeling ( babiczstyle ) Special tanks to Luke Allen http://www.robertbabicz.de/ http://www.facebook.com/robertbabicz http://www.myspace.com/robertbabicz http://twitter.com/RobertBabicz http://soundcloud.com/robbabicz
