A conversation with Matthew Halsall - trumpeter and founder of Gondwana Records label who creates beautiful, dreamy ambient music and was in Japan for live shows at Peter Barakan's Live Magic and Blue Note Tokyo in October 2024. Matthew Halsall is a trumpeter, producer and composer who is redefining spiritual jazz for the next generation. Over the course of nine albums, numerous accolades and his taste-making label, Gondwana Records, he's become a vital voice in UK music with his lithe, limitless blend of jazz and deeply meditative influences that's in tune with the natural world. His thoughtful and refined style draws on the foundations laid by greats like Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders, but adds the sample-fuelled electronica that he first heard in clubs, as well as global percussive influences and his signature – what you might call – sparkle. We travel to Gdansk in this latest episode of Composing Myself for a chat with Polish composer Hania Rani. During the course of this wonderful forty-five minute conversation with Wise Music CEO Dave Holley and Creative Director Gill Graham we learn about Hania's early love for Beethoven's sonatas and the struggle of having to choose between Britney and J-Lo, her accidental, into-the-frying-pan introduction to singing, her work on the posthumous music of Polish rock musician and composer Grzegorz Ciechowski, and why it's not music but “all the other things” that inspire her. Enchanting, enlightening stuff.https://haniarani.com/--------Hania Rani is a pianist, composer and musician who was born in Gdansk and splits her life between Warsaw, where she has her home, and Berlin where she studied and often works.Her debut album ‘Esja', a beguiling collection of solo piano pieces, on Gondwana Records was released to international acclaim on April 5th 2019 including nominations in 5 categories in the Polish music industries very own Grammys, the Fryderyki, and winning the Discovery of the Year 2019 in the Empikchain's Bestseller Awards and the prestigious Sankiaward for the most interesting new face of Polish music chosen by Polish journalists.Rani also composed the music for her first full length movie "I Never Cry" directed by Piotr Domalewski and for the play "Nora" directed by Michał Zdunik. Her song "Eden" was used as a soundtrack of a short movie by Małgorzata Szumowska for Miu Miu's movie cycle "Women's Tales".Her follow-up album, the expansive, cinematic, ‘Home', was released on May 15th and finds Rani expanding her range: adding vocals and subtle electronics to her music as well as being joined on some tracks by bassist Ziemowit Klimek and drummer Wojtek Warmijak. The album reunites her with recording engineers Piotr Wieczorek and Ignacy Gruszecki (Monochrom Studio) and the tracks were again mixed by Gijs van Klooster in his studio in Amsterdam and by Piotr Wieczorekin Warsaw ( Ombelico and Come Back Home). Home was mastered by Zino Mikoreyin Berlin (known for his work on albums by artists such as Nils Frahm and Ólafur Arnalds). For Rani, Home, is very much a continuation of the work she started on Esja, “the completion of the sentence” as she puts it. The album offers a metaphorical journey: the story of places that become our home sometimes by chance, sometimes by choice. It is the story of leaving a place that is familiar and the journey that follows it. Home opens with the fragment of the short story "Loneliness" by Bruno Schulz, which can be seen as a parable of a journey that does not necessarily mean going beyond the physical door but can signify going beyond the symbolic limits of our knowledge and imagination. Otura Mun, Matthew Halsall, Cécile McLorin Salvant, and Maria Chiara Argiró discuss how capitalism affects their music making, how the weight of history can alter their own creations, and the role of competitiveness has in the creative process. Otura Mun is a producer, percussionist, and band leader for the Afro-Caribbean ensemble ÌFÉ. He mastered the art of DJing, then got into west African drumming, before making a trip to Puerto Rico and staying there for 19 years. Matthew Halsall, is a composer, trumpeter, producer and DJ who's at the forefront of the UK jazz music scene. He's also the founder of Manchester's well-renowned Gondwana Records. American jazz vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant is known for her unique voice and passion for storytelling. At 21 years old she won first prize at the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, and since then has received various accolades for her dynamic musical style. Maria Chiara Argiró is an Italian jazz musician based in London with an incredibly diverse musical background. After training as a jazz pianist she played in the post-punk band These New Puritans, and has now released an exciting electronic concept album, Forest City.

Caoilfhionn Rose (pronounced Keelin), is a singer, songwriter and producer who was born in Manchester, England, with family roots in Northern Ireland and Yorkshire (UK). Emerging from a diverse music scene, she ties together remnants of Manchester's musical past with its evolving present. She has collaborated with musicians from around the world and is perhaps best known for her work with Vini Reilly of The Durutti Column Collaborating on four songs on the Chronicle LX: XL Caoilfhionn released her long-awaited sophomore album ‘Truly' on Gondwana Records which was co-produced by Keir Stewart of The Durutti Column. It moves through a tapestry of curious musical inflections; nods towards folk, jazz, ambient, electronica and even a subtle influence of psychedelia. Rose's song writing draws from a diverse palette of influences, including Building Instrument, Rachel Sermanni, Alabaster DePlume and Broadcast. Rose also professes to a love for beautiful, stripped back, piano based music, such as Dustin O'Halloran and label mate Hania Rani. Rob turner is a musician from Manchester UK and is the Drummer and co-writer with the band GoGo Penguin.  The band is known for expanding the piano trio format, combining elements of traditional styles such as Jazz and Classical with modern electronic music which they perform live on acoustic instruments.  His work with the band has included five studio albums, two released by Manchester's Gondwana Records, the second of which received the coveted mercury prize shortlist in 2014 and three albums released by the legendary Blue Note record label.  With GoGo penguin Rob composed ‘As above so below, a hermetic influenced tribute to the work of Basil Kirchin commissioned by the performing rights society foundation, a live ballet performed at the Barbican and a live re-scoring of Godfrey Reggio's cult masterpiece Koyaanisqatsi. In addition to performing around the globe the band have also appeared on NPR's tiny desk series, Jools Holland and together with co-member and bassist Nick Blacka Rob has presented on Giles Peterson's worldwide FM radio. Hi everyone and my first mix of the year (Half way through) and happy to share with you this modern Afro House mix . Przełomem w twórczości artystki była wydana w 2019 r. solowa płyta „Esja” nagrywana aż w trzech miejscach – Rejkiawiku, Warszawie i Amsterdamie, wydana przez prestiżową wytwórnię Gondwana Records. „Esja” okazała się sukcesem, a dziennikarze „Gazety Wyborczej” wybrali ją jednym z najlepszych albumów 2019 r. „Esja” przyniosła artystce wielki rozgłos, również poza granicami kraju. Hania Rani ma na swoim koncie występy w renomowanych salach koncertowych na całym świecie, m.in. we Funkhaus w Berlinie, londyńskim Roundhouse, ale również w Tokyo, Moskwie i Istambule. W 2019 r. została nominowana do Paszportów Polityki w kategorii Muzyka Popularna oraz nagrody Odkrycia Empiku 2019 w kategorii Muzyka. Artystka współpracuje z takimi artystami, jak m.in.: Christian Löffler (projekt „Nest”), Mela Koteluk, Hior Chronik, Kamp!, Igor Herbut i Misia Furtak (album „Co przyjdzie?”). Ewa Gruszka-Dobrzyńska - ekonomistka i skrzypaczka. Debiutowała w 2013 r. głośną powieścią „Nocne zwierzęta”, która znalazła się w finale Nagrody Literackiej Nike i była nominowana do Nagrody Literackiej Gdynia. W 2016 r. otrzymała Nagrodę im. A selection where Jazz is mixed but without borders and limits of time and genres, which often bring this music to be a niche's phenomenon for experts and purists. During this appointment, I give you a cocktail of pleasant and good quality music that goes from instrumental to vocal jazz, from soul to funky, from latin to rare grooves or new electric sounds. This is also to show everybody that jazz is not a musical genre, but a style, an attitude to express ourselves through the music. This attitude keeps on evolving and it has no limits.
