This week, we're thrilled to welcome a true legend of grit and perseverance — former NFL quarterback Dan Pastorini ("Taking Flak: Life In The Fast Lane"). Born and raised in the Bay Area, Pastorini made his mark early at Bellarmine College Prep before starring at nearby Santa Clara University, where he etched his name into the school's record books and shined as the Most Outstanding Player of the 1971 East-West Shrine Game. Drafted third overall by the Houston Oilers during the famed "Year of the Quarterback" in 1971, Pastorini became a symbol of toughness and innovation — famously pioneering the use of the flak jacket to play through brutal injuries. During his nine seasons with the Oilers, Pastorini led the team through the beloved "Luv Ya Blue" era under coach Bum Phillips, playing alongside greats like Earl Campbell and Elvin Bethea. His leadership helped fuel dramatic playoff victories and brought Houston to the brink of Super Bowl glory in both 1978 and 1979. It's a revealing conversation, which includes Pastorini thoughts about: His upbringing, early sports dreams, and why he chose football over a potential MLB career after being drafted by the New York Mets. Life in the NFL trenches: the hits he took, the historic games he played, and the deep bond he formed with the city of Houston. The controversial 1979 AFC Championship loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers — and the call that still sparks debate. His transition to Top Fuel drag racing, where he broke barriers once again by winning major NHRA events and clocking speeds over 270 mph, AND His passion for giving back through the Be An Angel Foundation and reflections on a life lived at full throttle. From quarterback to drag racer, businessman to philanthropist, Dan Pastorini's story is one of resilience, reinvention, and heart. + + + SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable "Good Seats" Merch: https://www.teepublic.com/?ref_id=35106 SPONSOR THANKS (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): Old School Shirts.com (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS): https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats Royal Retros (10% off promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 Yinzylvania (20% off promo code: GOODSEATSSTILLAVAILABLE): https://yinzylvania.com/GOODSEATSSTILLAVAILABLE 417 Helmets (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS): https://417helmets.com/?wpam_id=3 GRILL LIKE A PRO: Dan Pastorini's Texas Style BBQ Rubs & Spices: https://dpqualityfoods.com/ GIVE UNTIL IT HURTS: Be An Angel Fund: https://beanangel.org/ FIND AND FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/goodseatsstillavailable.com X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/

After Rory McIlroy dramatically became the sixth golfer in the modern history of the game to win the career Grand Slam at The Masters, Phil and Josh return to discuss this momentous occassion and everything that went on in the world of motorsports. Kyle Kirkwood added his name to the illustrious history at Long Beach, becoming a two-time winner of the event after winning pole for both races. Alex Palou's early season winning streak was ended, but he still had a strong finish. Multiple pit strategies and a completely green flag race made it interesting, while Penske's performance definitely was not Penske Perfect. Kyle Larson dominated 2/3 of the weekend at Bristol, winning the Cup and XFinity races. Yung Money ended up 2nd behind Chandler Smith in the Truck Series event. Rajah Carruth and Martinsville winner Daniel Hemric both had solid days along with the Niece duo. Oscar Piastri inserted himself into the title discussion with a dominant weekend at Bahrain, culminating in a win from pole. The McLaren driver held off Woody Russell and teammate Lando Norris to take the top step. Fish Lips was nowhere the entire weekend while Ferrari had mixed fortunes. Phil is competing as an Am in the ApexOne GT3 Endurance race at Catalunya, so he gives his thoughts on ACC and his feelings going into the event. Can Phil come through with a victory? Someone who many thought would have a victory at Augusta long before Sunday was Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irishman made it unnecessarily interesting throughout the final round, but held on in the first hole of the playoff to make history. Phil was focused on the Masters because it has always been his favorite golf tournament of the year, while Rory's win also was a happy result. The GSP Roundup covered F2/F3/F1 Academy, IMSA, MotoGP/Moto2, Supercars, Formula E, WSBK, WEC and Anthony Wayne Stewart's first career Top Fuel win at Las Vegas in the Four Wide Nationals, with Austin Prock (Funny Car) and Dallas Glenn (Pro Stock) taking the Wally's in their respective classes. Phil and Josh preview the Rockingham return for XFinity and Trucks and make picks along with the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix Formula One race before Josh's Sim Segment and Show Close.

A pair of champions join host Brian Lohnes on this week's episode of the NHRA Insider powered by Speedmaster. For Brian Corradi it was the grind of a top fuel season being rewarded with an epic and hard fought finish at the In-N-Out Burger Finals in Pomona and for Jordan Lazic it was the realization of a lifelong drag racing dream to hoist a Congruity HR NHRA Pro Mod championship trophy in Las Vegas. These two conversations are interesting. Lots of talk about team, about dedication, about how communication and quality of work has to match in order to rise to this level of success. Two fascinating chats with guys who not only can wrench, but who can drive as well.

Ida Zetterström is finally getting her feet underneath her in NHRA Top Fuel competition and a lot has happened in just a few races. Zetterström gives a detailed breakdown of her first five races; earning a red light for the first time in his drag racing career; the boost a big coming out weekend gave her and her team; continuing to get comfortable in a different dragster from her European machine; finding her routine and rhythm again after being out of the seat for over half a year; the competition not overlooking her team as a field filler; why she said a championship ring was a very American thing; experiencing a baseball game for the first time; the goals Zetterström wants to hit before the end of the season. On this episode of the NHRA Insider Podcast powered by Speedmaster, host Brian Lohnes is joined by winning Top Fuel Crew Chief Mike Green and top 10 Funny Car racer Blake Alexander. The conversations are entertaining and enlightening on several aspects of the sport. Green talks about one of the most challenging race-winning weekends of his decorated career. Justin Ashley was available to make a single qualifying run Friday and then left the track for religious observance. Returning Sunday, Ashley and the entire team put on a furious performance that garnered them the Top Fuel points lead and dropped jaws along the way. He takes us all inside the winning approach. Blake Alexander is in the best running funny car of his career right now and the performance continues to impress. Running 3.831 and then 3.87 at Dallas showed that Jim Head, Dave Leahy, and the whole team have their program in good order and he's driving to match. Lohnes and Alexander talk about the car, the preparation, and all the behind the scenes business work Blake does to sustain and grow his career. That and more on this show!
On this episode of the NHRA Insider Podcast powered by Speedmaster, host Brian Lohnes is joined by back to back Pro Stock winner Dallas Glenn and the winning Top Fuel crew chief form St Louis, Mike Neff. The two bring lots of insight into their recent successes and what it has taken to achieve them. Glenn has accepted all comers over the last two races, including beating his nemesis and closest contender Aaron Stanfield in a pair of squeaker final rounds. He talks about the team dynamic, his approach, and how small things can add up to big success or heartbreak. Mike Neff has a good race car to tune now and the frustrations of the season were washed away in one fell swoop with a huge win at Worldwide Technology Raceway. A minute issue with clutch discs manifested itself into months of futility, but now corrected the JCM racing dragster is among the best in the nation and could make a dramatic championship run. A great show with lots of fun and in-depth conversation!
