James Vowles: podium pride + Williams' winning potential

F1: Beyond The Grid

With 16 Drivers' and Constructors' World Championships combined, Williams are the third most successful team in Formula 1 history – behind Ferrari and McLaren. But they haven't won a title since 1997 and it's 13 years since they last won a race, so Team Principal James Vowles is on a mission to bring the glory days back to Williams. In 2025, the team have taken big steps towards success. Carlos Sainz secured the team's first podium in four years when he finished third in Baku, and they've amassed their highest points total since 2016. Speaking to Tom Clarkson, James reveals what he and Carlos spoke about over dinner before that sensational podium, why that result means so much to the whole team, and the reasons Carlos had endured a frustrating season up to that point. On the other side of the garage, James shares what he thinks is different about Alex Albon this year and how he's risen to the challenge of having a much more experienced and competitive teammate. And while Williams have performed better than expected in 2025 with such a strong driver line-up, their main focus is 2026. So what opportunities will the new era of Formula 1 bring them? Given James's first-hand experience of the intense championship battles between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg at Mercedes, what would his approach be if Alex and Carlos are fighting for a title in the coming years? Russell's 'statement' + McLaren title fight gets 'feisty' – 2025 Singapore GP Review

Tom Clarkson is joined in the Marina Bay paddock by F1 correspondent Lawrence Barretto and Australian motor racing journalist Greg Rust to reflect on the Singapore Grand Prix. McLaren have become World Champions for the second year in a row, but the big talking point was the opening lap contact between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Will that incident change how their championship battle plays out in the final six races, especially now the team have wrapped up the Constructors' title?  George Russell converted a stunning pole into his second win of the season with a dominant performance from lights out. But as his wait for a new contract with Mercedes continues, why does Lawrence think Russell is in a similar situation to the one Carlos Sainz found himself in at Ferrari?  Behind George was Max Verstappen in P2. It's his fourth podium in a row and, given Red Bull's previous struggles in Singapore, does this result confirm they've finally turned a corner with their car? And if Max does significantly close the gap in the title fight this year, will McLaren favour one of their drivers over the other to ensure they win a first Drivers' Championship since 2008? Also on the agenda, the guys discuss another frustrating weekend for Ferrari, while celebrating impressive points finishes from Sainz, Fernando Alonso and Ollie Bearman. Unsurprisingly, McLaren win the 2025 Formula 1 Constructors' Championship, equaling Red Bull Racing's record of least races taken to win the teams' title. Surprisingly, George Russell scored his first win around the streets of Singapore - building on a classic pole lap from Saturday. He was unmatched on Sunday, as Max Verstappen, in second, couldn't charge further, and held back the "faster" McLaren of Lando Norris. The Ferrari duo struggled with brake wear issues with Lewis Hamilton picking up a post-race time penalty of 5 seconds. Fernando Alonso, who was furious with Hamilton's "track limit" violations had a feisty race with a slow pit stop. Carlos Sainz went from P18 to the points after Alexander Albon's team work helped keep Liam Lawson at bay. The most-interesting stories and talking points to look out for from the 2025 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Max Verstappen-Red Bull Racing, have they found something in the setup that can bring them in the fight between the McLaren drivers? Can Verstappen and his legion of fans believe in a (very) late title fight in the 2025 Formula 1 season? As for Ferrari, Charles Leclerc will be the favourite for pole position, but can he finally convert a pole to win around the streets of Baku? Leclerc has scored 4 consecutive pole positions for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, but has converted none of them into race wins. Will Ferrari be in the fight, can they maximise a race weekend performance, or will the bumpy streets of Baku catch them out? McLaren can win the 2025 Formula 1 Constructors' Championship in Baku by scoring a 1-2 finish, and if they do so, they will be the "fastest" team to win the title in the season - with 7 races to go. However, will "papaya rules" (or "papaya mess") be in focus yet again on a weekend they can make history? Oscar Piastri & Lando Norris have been equally matched for several races, and that should continue in Baku. As for the mid-field, there's a high percentage chance that one of the teams could spring a surprise podium, after all, we have had surprise podium visitors and plenty of weird moments in Baku - which is also the highlight of the preview show for the 2025 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. #F1 #F12025 #AzerbaijanGP #Baku Learn more about your ad choices. Mea culpa! Mea maxima culpa! Yes, it seems like we suffered a bad case of "missing Maverick" during our rider reviews. What can we say - he was right in the middle and we just straight skipped him. Scandalous! Seems like the rider reviews aren't quite done, yet...What have we got in other news? For starters, there's Constructors' World Championship. That's the grading system where we're not looking for the best rider, but the best bike. Don't feel bad if the above doesn't immediately make you feel excited or even ring a bell, because the Constructer's Championship is woefully underexposed in MotoGP. That's a shame, because it is an arena where the stakes, drama and tension are all sky-high.In other words, it makes for good stories. Lando Norris, the slower McLaren driver won at the Hungaroring | F1 2025 #HungarianGP Post-Race Show

Inside Line F1 Podcast

Oscar Piastri has lost two race wins to Lando Norris purely on luck! First, Silverstone, and second was today in Hungary. We predicted this "race strategy situation" in our race preview. The second McLaren (Norris, in this case) on the road would get the favoured tyre strategy in the race while the first McLaren (Piastri, in this case) would go chase Charles Leclerc for the race win. Was McLaren fair with their drivers who are the only two contenders for the Drivers' Championship in 2025? Did McLaren favour one driver or the other in the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix? Or did they maximise the team's result of a 1-2 finish irrespective of which driver finished first? And finally, was Norris a lucky winner of the Hungarian Grand Prix, a race where was the "slower" of the two McLarens and was in fact overtaken by two other cars (George Russell & Fernando Alonso) at the race start? Btw, Norris was very lucky that Alonso chose to not battle with him when the DRS was enabled. Why? Alonso, who was also on the one-stop, was the thorn in everyone else's race strategy. He executed a "Monaco-style" strategy at the Hungaroring (also known as "Monaco without the walls"). He bunched up the field and messed up tyre strategy for the other midfielders. Fair play to Aston Martin & Alonso who scored the team's best result of the season and maximised their points to jump two spots in the Constructors' Championship. Finally, Charles Leclerc revealed that the mysterious issue that he faced in the race wasn't the "front wing" adjustment at his pit stop, but in fact, an issue with his chassis that compromised his pace. Leclerc continued to not add to his already embarrassing "pole to win" conversion rate in Formula 1. Lewis Hamilton, on the other hand, had another race to forget. He was one of those who was done in by Alonso's "slow pace" to finish 5th strategy. Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto impressed throughout the weekend and was the "Driver of the Day". As the summer break looms upon us, the question is whether Lando Norris will be comfortable knowing that he's brought the gap down to just 9 points, or whether he will know at the back of his head that Oscar Piastri would've actually been further ahead in the title battle if he was a tad bit luckier in two races - Silverstone and Hungary. Soumil Arora and Kunal Shah discuss the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix and how it all played out in strategy. #F1 #F12025 #HungarianGP Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Charles Leclerc grabbed a surprise pole position, his first of the 2025 Formula season, at the Hungaroring. But does he have the pace to win the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix against the mighty McLarens? On the contrary, does McLaren have a pace advantage that allows them to overtake Leclerc around a circuit that's famously known as "Monaco without the walls". How did McLaren lose their competitive advantage in the qualifying hour? What transpired in Q3 that brought Leclerc & Ferrari into play? And of course, why did Lewis Hamilton say he's "useless" and that Ferrari need a change in driver? Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen's magic saw him in Q3, but qualify behind a Sauber! Gabriel Bortoleto continued to impress with yet another Q3 session, while his team-mate and "Mr. Saturday" Nico Hulkenberg is now tied with Lance Stroll with the maximum Q1 exits in 2025. Is Aston Martin's pace for real, and if so, where did it come from? A double points finish in the race will propel them in tight the Constructors' Championship battle. 1996 Formula 1 World Champion, Damon Hill, and F1TV's lead commentator, Alex Jacques, join Christian Hewgill at the British Grand Prix for an F1 history lesson - 75 years since the World Championship began at Silverstone in 1950. How did the pinnacle of motorsport begin? What did the first World Championship look like in terms of the cars, the calendar and the Constructors? Who were the sport's biggest superstars in the early decades? What have been the biggest technological advances? How has safety improved over time?  Alex takes us through the defining moments of each era, how Formula 1 transformed into the spectacle it is today and what we can expect in the future. And Damon talks about his life in Formula 1 – how he went from watching his World Champion father Graham as a child to following in his footsteps by winning the title in '96, his epic rivalry with Michael Schumacher, being teammates with the legendary Ayrton Senna – and how the sport is so different now to when he was racing. This episode is brought to you by Dropbox Dash, an official technology partner of the McLaren Formula 1 team. Now a multiple race winner, podium finisher and polesitter, Lando Norris is ready to take the next step in his Formula 1 career and become World Champion. To do so in 2025, he'll have to beat his equally talented teammate Oscar Piastri. But despite a sometimes challenging first half of the season, Lando says he's a better driver this year and just needs to find some consistency. Speaking to Tom Clarkson, Lando talks about how he's evolved as a driver on and off track since winning his first Grand Prix in Miami in 2024, what McLaren are doing differently in their approach since becoming Constructors' World Champions, how he moved on from his collision with Oscar in Canada and why he's working hard to switch off from Formula 1 when he's not racing. Lando also tells us how F1 The Movie star Brad Pitt performed in the 2023 McLaren car at Austin recently and what it would mean to win his home race at this weekend's British Grand Prix. Plus, Lando's race engineer Will Joseph joins the pod to discuss how their relationship has changed since they started working together in 2019. Finally.. it's F1 movie launch season. But is the film, dubbed by one critic “Barbie for men” any good? Our correspondents were given a preview showing in Montreal and give their verdict. We hear from the producer Jerry Bruckheimer and one of the stars, Kerry Condon.  Plus we examine the fallout from the Canadian Grand Prix - for the second consecutive race we saw a collision in the closing stages. This time Lando Norris hit his team mate Oscar Piastri, but the dent was in Lando's championship challenge. We look at the external and internal pressure mounting on Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur and discuss echoes from the past when Jean Todt was under pressure and Michael Schumacher protected him. As Renault's CEO abruptly departs, what next for Alpine F1 as they sink to 10th in the Constructors' Championship while doing an exec search for their fourth team principal in two years? Fernando Alonso gave Aston Martin a season best result in Montreal on their 100th Grand Prix, but is Lance Stroll's form a concern? And should Montreal race winner George Russell take matters into his own hands and force a move to Aston? Did the new technical directive really make headway for anyone in this race? And should the safety car restart have happened earlier? (Pardon the lack of audio punch in Kunal's track!) Before all else, did Max Verstappen deliberately ram into George Russell as the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix came to a conclusion? He received a 10-second time penalty for "causing a collision", but was Verstappen angry at Russell's driving or Red Bull's decision to put him on the hard tyre at the Safety Car restart, or both? But maybe the fans were entertained because they voted for Max Verstappen as the "Driver of the Day" for the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix. At the front, McLaren's Oscar Piastri dominated the race proceedings to score his 5th F1 win of the season. Lando Norris had yet another messy start, while Charles Leclerc ran a different tyre strategy to score yet another podium. Lots of movements in the Drivers' and Constructors' championship after the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix. - Fernando Alonso scored points at home - his first points of the season! He's the 18th driver to score points in 2025. - Isack Hadjar jumps Esteban Oon for 9th- Nico Hulkenberg jumps to 11th in the WDC, ahead of Carlos Sainz. - Pierre Gasly jumps Yuki Tsunoda for 14th. - Ferrari jumps to 2nd place in the Constructors' Championship - 165 points- Mercedes is down to 3rd (159 points), Red Bull Racing are 4th (144 points) - Racing Bulls jumps Haas for 7th place (28 points).- Sauber is up to 8th - up 2 places! It was a race of some of the nicest overtakes this season, and controversial ones too. That's why we're now LIVE on the Inside Line #F1 Podcast with Kunal Shah and Soumil Arora. 3 penalty points for Sundaram Ramaswami on missing our show today! Monaco was not the most exciting Grand Prix, Lando Norris closed the gap in the title race on his team-mate Oscar Piastri with his first victory on the streets. McLaren extended their already massive lead in the Constructors table and no-one looked happier on the podium than McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown. But away from the track, Monaco was a huge weekend, with more people, more boats and more going on than for many years. It reflected F1's cultural and financial boomtime. And we are focussing on that in this episode. F1 is attracting a lot of new sponsors, but what is bringing the big money into the sport? We hear from the largest of them, LVMH, who have come in with a 10 year $1bn deal, using its multiple brands like Louis Vuitton, Moet Hennessy and TAG Heuer, which was the title sponsor of the Monaco GP, the first time that the race has ever had a title sponsor. We also hear from the new Liberty Media CEO Derek Chang on his vision for how F1 grows from here. James Allen is joined in the studio by Autosport's F1 Business Correspondent Mark Mann-Bryans. In just 15 days' time, the final chapter in the story of the 2024 Formula 1 season will be written. A triple header of races - from the bright lights of Las Vegas to the heat of Qatar and Abu Dhabi – will decide the World Championships. It's late November, and time for Formula 1 to take up residency in Las Vegas. The sound of engines roaring down the city's world-famous Strip will soon bring in the crowds. Unlike other races on the calendar, which are organized by local promoters, the Las Vegas Grand Prix is run by F1 itself. So the pressure is on the event's CEO Renee Wilm to get everything just right. There will be extra focus on this year's Grand Prix, as Las Vegas is the first race where the 2024 Drivers' Championship can be decided. The season has seesawed between Red Bull's Max Verstappen and McLaren challenger Lando Norris. But it's Verstappen who can defend his World title, simply by finishing ahead of his British rival in the Grand Prix. Back at base, McLaren are studying the data as they prepare for another crucial event in the U.S.Aston Martin race engineers Chris Cronin and Andrew Vizard are also doing their homework ahead of the Las Vegas Grand Prix. It's not just the racing that the teams are preparing for back at base. At every Grand Prix across the season, the team's wine and dine guests and there are some big celebrity names on the Las Vegas guest list. But when night falls for the Las Vegas Grand Prix, and the starting lights go out, all eyes will be on Norris and Verstappen. The penultimate race of the season for the F1 teams lies 8,000 miles east of Vegas in Qatar. The 2023 race around the Lusail Circuit, which was held earlier in the year, was brutal. Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll and his Performance Coach Henry Howe reveal how they are preparing for the rigours of the desert race. The 2024 Formula 1 season is also the longest in the sport's history, with 24 races on the calendar. McLaren driver Oscar Piastri is taking it all in his stride but the Australian does have a unique take on the brain power that is needed in F1.McLaren are aiming to flex their muscles this weekend because Qatar offers the first chance to clinch the Constructors' crown. To do that they need to out-score rivals Ferrari by 45 points. The heat is on, in more ways than one, in Qatar.F1:Back at Base is narrated by Josh Hartnett. It's late September. The seasons are turning – but the wheels of Formula 1 have stopped. There is now a three-week pause before racing resumes at the U.S. Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. At Aston Martin's Silverstone headquarters, the cars have made a rare return home. In 2024, the cars travel to 21 countries across five continents - that's a total 127,000 kilometres in air distance. Head of Build and Car Assembly Mark Gray is the man in charge of logistics and caring for Aston Martin's racing cars when they are back at base. Inside the teams' fast-paced factories, there is no respite as his work continues around the clock. This teamwork is essential to the fates and fortunes of the drivers during a grand prix. Formula 1 is a team sport, but it also relies on the performance of just one individual - the driver. McLaren stars Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri reveal the pressures of driving a piece of work that takes hours to create and costs millions of dollars. Aston Martin drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll also share how crucial the team is when it comes to performance and reliability. It's not only the drivers who are feeling the pressure with six races to go in the 2024 season. Victory for Lando Norris at the last race in Singapore – and another podium for Oscar Piastri – saw McLaren stretch their lead in the team standings by 41 points. But the title hasn't been won yet - and there is work to do back at base, as team principal Andrea Stella knows only too well. Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali has been in Stella's shoes, when he was at the sharp end of Championship fights during his 22-year stint with Ferrari. Domenicali understands only too well that this pause in competition is, for all 10 teams on the grid, just the calm before the storm. The seasons have shifted again, and October is here. It's time for racing to return at the U.S. Grand Prix, in Austin, Texas. At Aston Martin's Northamptonshire headquarters, the team is battening itself down against forecast heavy rain and winds in the UK. It's vital the team's connection from Mission Control to the track doesn't go down. F1 journalist Sarah Holt and broadcaster Holly Samos have been given unprecedented access inside the team's Mission Control. They have been given their own headsets, desks and data screens. For the first time, we will hear what a Sprint race sounds like from inside the team. As Aston Martin reveals top-secret radio communications, a visit to Mission Control might just change the way we understand how the teams go racing. There are also pivotal moments for both Championships at the U.S. Grand Prix. A storm is brewing on track between friends-turned-title-rivals, Lando Norris and Max Verstappen, while Ferrari launch themselves into the battle for the Constructors' Crown.F1:Back at Base is narrated by Josh Hartnett.
