F1 News From the Nerds - A New Team Entering F1?

The FormulaNerds Team return for a special episode of News from the Nerds to discuss a potential 11th team joining the sport. James M is joined by Sam and James P to cover and discuss the ongoing story: The row over Andretti's F1 entry continues to rumble on. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has now thrown his support behind the bid in a public intervention.  Andretti's bid to enter F1 has been met with pessimism by the teams for the last two seasons. Owner Michael Andretti has taken a new approach to turn the tide of opinion. After the FIA announced it would investigate new teams to join F1, Andretti announced its intentions to tie up with General Motors and Cadillac to enhance its chances. No public concerns were raised by F1 at the announcement, however, President Ben Sulayems's recent tweet condemning supposed negative reaction indicates F1 is still wary of Andretti's entry. The FIA President has become the most vocal support for Andretti as it chases a place on the grid. Speaking during a press conference at the Dakar Rally, Autosport quotes the FIA president as stating that new team entries form part of the “sustainability of the sport”. He added that up to 12 teams can be on the grid in the future: “Today there are two sides of sustainability. There is sustainability of the environment, and there is sustainability of the sport. If you want to sustain the sport, you have to open it to the rest of the manufacturers. And to us, we are allowed to have 12 teams on the grid”. Showing further support, Ben Sulayem highlighted General Motors's position as an engine manufacturer, stating “we should be encouraging them to come to Formula 1”. He added that he “needs a reason why” the sport would not welcome Andretti or General Motors. On this week's Cut to the Race, Oli is joined by Abby, James and Sam to discuss the top three teams of the 2022 season for part two of the season review. On this show: The Nerds Quiz! Oli provides another quiz for the Nerds focusing on 2022 to test their knowledge of the latest season. How will they do? Can you beat the Nerds? An uphill battle for Mercedes: 2022 wasn't quite what Mercedes would have wanted with a car that was less than perfect. For the Silver Arrows there were many obstacles in the way but they finished on a high in the final races. The quartet talk about Mercedes' challenging season and the promise of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. A championship fall for Ferrari: Ferrari's season started strong with a place in the championship but it soon went downhill after some blunders, retirements and bad luck. Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz had varying seasons with highs and lows. The panel dissect exactly what went wrong for the Scuderia. A double victory for Red Bull: Red Bull won both championships this year but it wasn't without its challenges. A double DNF in Bahrain proved futile in hindering Red Bull's progress and they dominated the season. They had some blunders with the cost cap and team orders but they fought their way to victory. The panel discuss Red Bull's double victory, the clear difference in Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez. -- Keep up to date with all the latest Formula 1 News @ www.formulanerds.com -- Follow Us: Facebook - www.Facebook.com/FormulaNerds Twitter - www.twitter.com/Formula_Nerds Instagram www.instagram.com/FormulaNerds -- For Advertising & Sponsorship Opportunities:- Email Business@FormulaNerds.com Learn more about your ad choices. 2022 F1 Season Review & Quiz - Part 1

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 28, 2022 77:52

This week on the Cut to the Race Podcast, host Oli and his panel of Abby, Sam and James M tackle the first half of the 2022 season review. In this episode, it's the bottom seven teams from Constructors' Championship and their drivers. Who exceeded expectations, who failed to deliver, and what can we expect from their respective 2023s? Quiz '22 This week's quiz is all things 2022. How closely was the panel paying attention this season, as they try to count everything from drivers to retirements and list the calendar in order?  The battle for P4 An intense fight between the two was somewhat overshadowed by internal dysfunction. McLaren started terribly, but quickly recovered. Well, half their line-up did, at least… Alpine were quick from the get-go, but were plagued by poor reliability. Well, half their line-up was, at least… Personnel changes for next season will see shifts in team dynamic, but will they continue their fight for best of the rest? A tale of two teams Alfa Romeo and Aston Martin had divergent seasons yet converged at 55 points apiece. Alfa took a step forward, whilst Aston took a step back. Valtteri Bottas was a revelation Alfa, but how did his rookie teammate fare? A surprisingly slow start for Aston made way for a resurgent Sebastian Vettel, who provided his own summer surprise. Did Haas flatter to deceive? After an abysmal 2021 season, the only way was up for Haas. With Nikita Mazepin sacked during the off-season, Kevin Magnussen shocked and delighted in equal measure with P5 on his return to F1 at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix. Exciting early season form eventually tailed off, but Mick Schumacher remained costly for the team. KMAG dovetailed the campaign with feel good performances, whilst Schumacher peaked mid-year. That wasn't enough to save him, as Magnussen's old foe replaces Mick for 2023. Falls from grace Perhaps the teams most disappointed with 2022 will be AlphaTauri and Williams – though admittedly, that's to be expected as they finished P9 and P10. AlphaTauri ran Haas close, but Pierre Gasly was unable to extract as much from the car as he did in previous years. Yuki Tsunoda took a step forward, or so it seemed, but struggled after securing his future for 2023, when Gasly will enjoy pastures new. Can his replacement, Nyck de Vries, deliver on the promise of his Monza cameo? Williams might have provided that opportunity to De Vries, but it's Logan Sargeant who has benefitted from a changing of the guard there. He replaces Nicholas Latifi, whose season never really got going. He partners Alex Albon, who was a bright spot in an otherwise frustrating season that saw Williams fall back to the foot of the standings. Round 22 - The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Review 2022

This week on the Cut to the Race podcast, Oli is joined by James M, Abby and Sam to discuss the final race weekend of the year - the 2022 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. There were mixed emotions throughout the weekend. Whether you were a Lewis Hamilton fan having to relive the events of the previous year, or a fan of any of the four departing drivers (some permanently, some perhaps not) - Daniel Ricciardo, Mick Schumacher, Nicholas Latifi and four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel. Together, the panel discuss the highlights and major talking points, including the confirmation of Nico Hülkenberg's return, Logan Sargeant securing his spot on the grid, and - of course - the on-track action itself. https://www.formulanerds.com/news/breaking-haas-announce-second-driver-for-2023/ https://www.formulanerds.com/news/breaking-logan-sargeant-secures-super-licence-and-f1-seat/ Mercedes were looking to build on their first race win of the season last time out in Brazil, but would they or Ferrari be able to take the challenge to the dominant Red Bull team as Max Verstappen looked for a record-extending 15th win of the season. And then there was the battle for second in the drivers' title. Charles Leclerc and Sergio Pérez came into the race on exactly the same number of points after the controversy of Verstappen refusing to move aside for his teammate in São Paulo. https://www.formulanerds.com/news/perez-on-verstappen-it-shows-who-he-really-is/ But only one would come away with the silver medal and it would prove to be a clever bit of strategy from Ferrari (yes, really) that would make the difference. https://www.formulanerds.com/news/strategic-battles-and-emotional-farewells-at-the-abu-dhabi-grand-prix/ The quartet also do the traditional 'national anthem review' for the final time in 2022, before James, Sam and Abby try to answer more obscure questions in Oli's latest crazy quiz. This week on the Cut to the Race podcast, Host Oli is joined by James M, Abby and Sam as the quartet dissect the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, held at the legendary Interlagos in Brazil + Oli plays quizmaster again as he tests the knowledge of the group. Will the trio fare as well as in previous weeks, or will they come up short this time? Arguably the race weekend of the season, each meaningful session provided action and surprises. From first-time pole-sitters to first time winners, there is simply no predicting what Interlagos might offer. Together, the panel discuss those highlights and major talking points. The action and subsequent surprises were helped with a sizeable side of drama, which will no doubt dominate headlines over the coming days and weeks. The third and final sprint weekend of the 2022 season, the festivities in Brazil were the best advert for the format that F1 has seen thus far. First, it produced the qualifying session of the year and perhaps the most popular pole position in recent memory. Changeable weather conditions caused chaos and confusion at Ferrari, George Russell set up his weekend perfectly by accident, and Haas acted quickly when it mattered most. https://www.formulanerds.com/news/a-red-flag-and-surprise-pole-position-in-the-sao-paulo-qualifying/ Then, tensions ran high between teammates at both Alpine and Aston Martin in the sprint, with penalties applied to guilty parties. Verstappen fell back whilst Hamilton surged through, and there was no shortage of quality wheel-to-wheel racing, and there was a small sign of things to come at Red Bull. https://www.formulanerds.com/news/sao-paulo-grand-prix-sprint-race-results/ The grand prix saw safety cars, diverging strategies and the Mercedes duo confirming their apparent renaissance. There was action throughout and drama aplenty. Verstappen and Hamilton came to blows again, Alpine grabbed the initiative in their battle with McLaren and fractures are starting to show at Red Bull. But the question is, how serious could the implications be? https://www.formulanerds.com/news/sao-paulo-grand-prix-race-results/ https://www.formulanerds.com/news/perez-on-verstappen-it-shows-who-he-really-is/ https://www.formulanerds.com/news/hamilton-you-know-how-it-is-with-max-as-pair-come-together-again/ -- Keep up to date with all the latest Formula 1 News @ www.formulanerds.com -- Follow Us: Facebook - www.Facebook.com/FormulaNerds Twitter - www.twitter.com/Formula_Nerds Instagram www.instagram.com/FormulaNerds -- For Advertising & Sponsorship Opportunities:- Email Business@FormulaNerds.com Learn more about your ad choices. Formula 1 headed to Mexico with both championships settled, but there is still plenty to play for elsewhere. The panel discuss the news that broke over the weekend, including Christian Horner and Red Bull's response to their penalty for breaching the cost cap and the team's boycott of Sky Sports, before taking on Oli's 'Confusing F1 Quiz', which featured some out-of-order questions and more driver-name switching to break Sam's brain. And then it was back to the track for the quartet. With Mercedes having shown some legitimate pace in the thin air of Mexico City and Ferrari having gradually lost their way, it would prove to be a 2021-esque battle between Red Bull and Mercedes. Saudi Arabia confirmed that they can host more F1 races. What does the trio make of this decision? Do we love this fast-paced circuit, or do we rather see it off the calendar? Also, there are set to be six sprint races, making the total number of races in a season 30 rather than just 24. Is this better than just increasing the number of Grands Prix per season, or will it prove to be too much to handle in a single weekend? https://www.formulanerds.com/news/steiner-more-sprint-races-better-than-expanding-the-f1-calendar/ Should F1 implement 'information' laps? After the delays in Singapore and Japan, the chairman of the Grand Prix Drivers Association Alex Wurz suggested that F1 implement information laps. Two teams are rumoured to have surpassed the budget cap last season, with potential championship implications. What do we know, and what do we think will come out of it? Silly season HAAS to be over soon: ·   It looks like we know who is going to AlphaTauri, depending on whether Alpine get their man, which should decide Williams's choice. Together, the team discuss whether Binotto is a dead man walking or if he's the right man for the job at Maranello. An extended anthem review, with a look ahead to the always popular Italian national anthem when F1 gets to Monza in September. The clash of Alpines, with Alonso shocked at his teammates driving standards. Was the writing on the wall for the hot-headed Spaniard and his French team? Are Mercedes back, or was Hungary another false dawn? A difficult Friday made way for a triumphant Saturday for Mr Saturday and a remarkable recovery drive from Lewis Hamilton on Sunday. In today's podcast, Sam and Abby get together with James and Catherine to discuss the latest news surrounding the motorsport world, mostly Formula One. They kick off the podcast with a quick round-up of the events surrounding Ferrari and Sergio Perez in the French Grand Prix. Charles Leclerc took full responsibility for his crash which caused him a potential win, while Carlos Sainz insisted that the team is not “a disaster,” despite some controversial calls they've been making. Meanwhile, the Mexican blames the Virtual Safety Car for not putting his Red Bull on the podium. You can read more on this on: https://www.formulanerds.com/news/f1latestnews/championship-fight-is-pointless-if-mistakes-continue-leclerc/ https://www.formulanerds.com/news/sainz-on-french-gp-we-are-not-a-disaster/ On another note, they took a look at sustainability in Formula 1, and so the discussion had to be topped off with Formula E which heads into Rounds 13 and 14 in London this weekend. They spoke about the future of the electric championship and what potential Formula One drivers can join in too, while having a look at Nyck De Vries, who seemed to found his feet in the all-electric series. Speaking of Nyck De Vries, who makes part of the Williams Drivers Academy, the Nerds took a look at possible prospects that can join the Oxford-based team for 2023 as Nicholas Latifi and Alex Albon edge the end of their contract in 2022. Read more on potential drivers on: https://www.formulanerds.com/news/jost-capito-two-talents-williams-next-year/. And while they touched on new beginnings, they also looked at the potential end of the F1 journey for drivers such as Daniel Ricciardo at McLaren, Sebastian Vettel with Aston Martin, and Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton. The discussion does not stop at the podcast, you can also get more insight into why these drivers might leave the sport soon on: https://www.formulanerds.com/news/ricciardo-give-me-a-winning-car-and-ill-win/ https://www.formulanerds.com/news/rosberg-lando-norris-is-potentially-the-best-of-the-next-generation/ https://www.formulanerds.com/news/could-hamilton-make-it-to-400-races/. The trio discuss Ferrari, who looked to have a strong weekend but was all ruined by Charles Leclerc's crash. They discuss who was truly at fault, Mattia Binotto's team or the 24-year-old's? They also point out the strategists' confusion which caused Carlos Sainz a podium finish after he made a spectacular comeback from the back of the grid. They go on to compare the Lewis vs Max rivalry to that compared to Max vs Charles this year. Mercedes are not at the top of their game but they seem to be turning up the heat on Ferrari and Red Bull, especially after a double podium finish thanks to Lewis Hamilton and George Russell with a slight push from Toto Wolff.
