ONCE UPON A GENE - EPISODE 069 Ben's Friends A Rare Disease Social and Support Platform with Ben Munoz Rare Disease Day is on Sunday, February 28th, 2021 and I'd love to know how you're celebrating and what Rare Disease Day means to you. Share a short voicemail message with me here! Ben Munoz is the President and Co-Founder of Ben's Friends. The organization is dedicated to ensuring that patients with rare disease or chronic illness and their caregivers, family and friends have a safe and supportive place to connect with others. They're a network of patient communities for anyone affected by rare disease or chronic illness and they're growing every day. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Tell us about yourself and how you became part of the rare disease community.  My journey into the rare disease space was in 2006. At the time, I was a student in business school when I got a pain in the back of my head and rushed to the emergency room. After an emergency surgery, I learned I had a rare type of stroke at 29 years old. It was called an Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM). I was in ICU for a while after surgery and later was dealing with a lot of panic around the condition and navigation information, treatment, risks and the overwhelm of it all. I had resources online through support groups and mailing lists, which is when I learned of the possibility of connecting with others who had my condition, though it was limited. I began thinking of how to create a website where people could connect with others with similar conditions. I started with a Facebook community of others with AVM. With the success and growth of the group, I went on to creating an additional support group for Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN) which was also successful and then Ataxia. I noticed the trend that people were looking for support and that there were very few support opportunities. From that, the non-profit was founded and we have more than 40 communities to date, each focused on one rare disease.  What compelled you to seek out support so quickly? I was in a dark place and remember the mix of emotions- thankful to be alive and survivor's guilt, the worry about what could happen tomorrow and feeling like a ticking time bomb with the AVM in my brain. I listened to a Tony Robbins recording and recall the energy he had, the inspiration and tools he provided and that motivated me to do something with the opportunity and turn the darkness and depression around and do something positive.  Has there been a ripple effect that's resulted from being a Ben's Friend's contributor? Members have gotten the support they've needed at a critical time, they want to give back to the community and they can contribute in the same way that someone did for them when they joined as a new member. We've built a pipeline for this where we recruit, train and develop moderators and provide leadership opportunities beyond that. Greeters, moderators, moderator support and executive directors have all started as members of a community.  What is your favorite Ben's Friends story? There was a member of the Trigeminal Neuralgia or suicide disease community who was contemplating suicide. The member wrote in a year after an incident and described how she was standing on a tall bridge in Portland and about to end it, decided not to and found the Trigeminal Neuralgia community of others going through the same thing she was. It gave her the strength to become a moderator helping others and went on to be a suicide prevention advocate. She testified in front of Congress a few times for programs for those contemplating suicide.  How do people join Ben's Friends and what if their disease isn't listed on your website? Go to our website, find your listed community, click to join, say hello and share your story when you're comfortable. If you don't see a condition listed, make a request to launch a new community. There is no cost to sign up. When Steve Palmer and Mickey Bakst started Ben's Friends, they had no idea that it would be the force that it is today. What began as an industry-specific recovery meeting in Charleston, SC has since transformed into a national lifeline for chefs, servers, bartenders, and other hospitality workers trying to achieve and maintain sobriety in an industry that often celebrates and enables excess and masochism. Though the meetings until now have been held weekly and face-to-face in the cities that host chapters, they're now available via Zoom on a local level, and—for the first time—nationally. Palmer spoke with Food & Wine senior editor Kat Kinsman about the particular struggles that restaurant workers are facing in isolation, and why human connection is vital for sobriety and mental health. Maybe the most important podcast I've ever produced. Addiction in restaurant culture. In an environment whose very premise is dedicated to serving others, how do we take care of ourselves without the emotional blankets of alcohol, drugs, sex, work, shopping, chaos, rage, you name it? How do we help each other remove those blankets and begin to feel and work through the complicated feelings that come with running and working in the food industry? How do we help our own? Ben's Friends is figuring it out. My conversation with Carrie Neal Walden of the Atlanta Chapter confirms we absolutely need this in Charlottesville. Sooner rather than later and you guys know why. No need to spell it out, if you know what I mean, you know what I mean. If you don't? Ask your local food industry professional, because until we start talking about addiction in restaurant culture, it will not get better. Our discussion topics are listed below. Also stay tuned for my very biased and giggly review of our local AquaFloat facility. It's pretty fucking epic and a much better tool than that after work shift drink. Addiction is a chronic disease, but if you have the right toolbox full of stuff, and some community that understands, it becomes just one more facet of the shiny diamond you are. Be well my friends. Big Love. Chaos. It's the new cocaine. Living in the present. Be here now. Don't "catastrophize" and predict a horrible future. You know how addiction ends. How about trying the other story? Aren't you curious? It's okay to say no and offer an alternative instead of saying yes all the time. It's okay to say yes, but not right this minute. Is restaurant culture different from other job cultures? Is it an Island of Misfit Toys? Setting boundaries. Parenting yourself. Restaurant culture and its peculiar habits, some that still exist. Why Ben's Friends is NOT AA. At all. A group of restaurant people that want to get and stay sober and they want to help other folks do the same. Not anonymous. Round table open-discussion format. Once a week meetings in 16 cities. Topic based peer-support discussion. What do you do if you're 2 weeks sober but your friends aren't? What boundaries do you set for yourself? What other industries could this model translate to? Handling your shit. To live sober, you've got to have connection. Anthony Bourdain Sean Brock Mocktails Food delivery system impacts everyone. We're all a hot mess. Shame is a useless emotion. Take it and turn it into something to help another person. It'll make you feel better. Sober Curious. What is it? Perception and Awareness. Being able to look at yourself from outside yourself.

The Indigo Road Hospitality Group operates more than 20 restaurants across the Southeast region of the United States, and in 2019 it was named one of Forbes' 25 best small companies in America. Palmer's career in hospitality began at the age of 13, when he washed dishes at a local Chinese restaurant. From there, he climbed the ranks and worked in several other restaurants and positions — which led to a problem all too common in hospitality: substance abuse. After battling an alcohol and cocaine addiction for ten years, Palmer went to rehab and found the road to recovery. Now 18 years sober, he's made it his life's mission to change the conversation in the restaurant industry and create space for others to find sobriety.  In this episode, hear the deeply personal story of Steve's substance abuse support group, Ben's Friends, and the sobriety movement it has inspired in ten cities. Plus, host Paul Spiegelman talks to Steve about his own recent venture into the restaurant industry and the challenges and opportunities of building positive cultures in hospitality.

Restaurateur Steve Palmer has long been part of Charleston, SC’s food scene, but when Oak Steakhouses and O-Ku Restaurants started popping up in other cities in the South, this dynamic leader of The Indigo Road Hospitality Group landed on a bigger stage. It’s something he’s embraced, seizing the opportunity to bring to life his ideas of hospitality and his role to define and shift industry culture, including as a mentor to many through Ben’s Friends, a food and beverage industry support group for those who struggle with substance abuse. Still, the nuts and bolts of all of this has to be good restaurants, and Steve knows how to build them. It’s a mix of brain and heart, and he has an abundance of both.
