Delhi, India Part 2 In this episode, your FAQ is: Safety in India for solo travelers Today's Destination is: Delhi, India. Part 2 Today's Misstep- Cellphone issues that were my fault and more Travel Advice: Safety tips for travel in Delhi. FAQ: Let's talk about safety in India. My friend Kathryn is going to Delhi and is worried about being a solo woman. Can I talk to her about what she can expect? The short answer is that Kathryn is already back home, and she had a great trip, but she was nervous and needed confirmation that all would be well. Today's destination: Delhi, India Part 2 One of the best parts of India…and Aero City Let's discuss a region of Delhi called Aero City.  It's really close, just minutes from the airport. Indira Gandhi International Airport, that is. It's well connected to the rest of the city through the Airport Metro Line. And you can get to places in the center of Delhi, like Connaught Place, in about 25 minutes. Aerocity is a top priority for safety and security for female travelers, with state-of-the-art cameras, staff, and surveillance. The hotels and surrounding public spaces are really nice. Aero City was full of what's new about India. There are hotels, shopping centers, and restaurants. I felt Safe being here. I took the AirPort Express Metro to Aero City and walked for about 6 minutes in the 105-degree heat. Drenched in sweat, the pool was on my mind when I arrived! It made the walk bearable! There were girls and sisters in the pool, my new friends, ages 8 and 11. They were in the room next to me and on School holidays in Dehli—a break for the families and fun for me.  Today's Misstep: Cellphone issues:  Here is when I discovered my cellphone issues with Airalo and why my WhatsApp was not working! India is not in the Asia plan! That was my failure! I did not have internet service when out of Wi-Fi coverage in India.  Something with the eSIM, Airalo plan, which was not covered under “All Asia”. I need to tell them to label that better. If you want to sign up for the plan I have used worldwide, get $3.0ff with the code MARY2856.  Today's Travel Advice- Dehli Safety Tips Dress Conservatively: Especially in urban villages and when visiting religious sites Avoid Crowded Areas at Night: Stick to well-lit and populated areas, and avoid walking alone at night Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Keep an eye on your belongings and be cautious of pickpockets and scams Use Trusted Transportation: Prefer pre-paid taxis, Uber, or Ola, and avoid accepting rides from unknown drivers Act Confident: Walk with confidence and firmly decline any unwanted attention or offers Connect with Dr. Travelbest 5 Steps to Solo Travel website Dr. Mary Travelbest X Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Page Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Group Dr. Mary Travelbest Instagram Dr. Mary Travelbest Podcast Dr. Travelbest on TikTok Dr.Travelbest onYouTube In the news

Episode 485: Neal and Toby recap the most memorable trends of the year including the rise of dry January, along with the rise of weed drinks. Then, ‘romantasy' novels were all the rage as book sales skyrocketed thanks to #booktok. Also, nostalgia was a major contributor to sales as consumers make purchases with their emotions. In fashion, it was all about vintage clothing and the mob-wife aesthetic, while a generational war arose over which socks were ‘in.' Lastly, loneliness increased in 2024, causing people to turn to AI, decorate their fridges, or simply sit on the couch and watch their favorite TV shows.  Subscribe to Morning Brew Daily for more of the news you need to start your day. In recent trends, the concept of solo dining has seen a noticeable uptick. Responding to a shift in societal norms and lifestyles, restaurants around the globe are adapting their policies and structures to better accommodate single diners. This shift may be due to the increasing rate of urbanisation and the rise of the single-person households. This trend not only affects the layout and seating arrangements of restaurants but also the menu design and portion sizes. In the realm of biology, scientific developments have led to the creation of creatures with see-through skin. This journey towards transparency in creatures is a highly intricate process that has opened avenues for greater understanding of biological systems. It allows scientists to view internal structures and processes without resorting to invasive procedures. This development has broad implications for many areas of biology and medicine. As the NFL season approaches, teams are gearing up to compete at their highest level. The preparation for the upcoming season involves players refining their skills, coaches perfecting strategies, and fans predicting the outcomes of games. Each team has its unique strengths and weaknesses, making it a thrilling and unpredictable season to look forward to.In other news, prominent Howard University made headlines by revoking Sean Combs', also known as 'Diddy's', honorary degree and rejecting his $2 million gift and pledge agreement. The decision was met with mixed reactions, on one hand, it served a blow to the musician's reputation while, on the other hand, it saved the university from potential controversies it might have faced in light of Diddy's previous legal issues. Finally, a lingering sense of anguish persists in society, owing to various challenges faced by individuals and communities. This is a reminder that while progress can be achieved in several fronts, there is always a need for empowerment and resilience in the face of adversities. Overall, these stories represent the evolving dynamics of societal patterns, scientific advancements, sports fervor, celebrity influence, and emotional undercurrents.

Erick has carved a special niche in the restaurant industry with inimitable persistence, passion and drive. In November 2018, Erick opened Virtue as his first solo concept, nestled in the heart of the historic Hyde Park neighborhood on Chicago's south side. The restaurant combines his love of Southern cuisine and his insatiable study of history and art as they relate to food culture. Erick and Virtue have been featured in a host of local and national media, and in 2022, Erick was named Best Chef: Great Lakes by the James Beard Foundation, making history as the first Black chef to win in this category. In November 2021, inspired by his experience providing takeout only during the pandemic, Erick opened Mustard Seed Kitchen in Chicago, a takeout and delivery-only concept featuring a menu of high-quality approachable meals. And less than a year later in August 2022, he launched a third concept, Daisy's Po-Boy and Tavern which evokes the vibrancy of New Orleans through its most celebrated sandwich, located a few steps away from Virtue. Months after Daisy's opened, Erick collaborated with Virtue's Chef de Cuisine Damarr Brown to open Top This, a delivery and takeout concept offering a variety of delectable mac and cheeses with delicious toppings. Erick's Virtue team is now getting ready to open a new Mexican cocktail bar, Cantina Rosa, celebrating Mexican culture the same way Virtue has done celebrating Black culture in Hyde Park. The New York Times stated that Naomi was a "chef who made Portland a dining destination," and described her as "a self-taught chef with an irreverent streak whose high standards and generosity of spirit made her the culinary matriarch of Portland, Ore." As a Portland-based chef, Naomi's ventures have included Family Supper, Clark Lewis, Gotham Tavern, and Ripe Cooperative. Her time as chef and owner of Portland's beloved gastronomic shrine Beast from 2007 to 2020 made her one of the region's most successful chefs and earned her the 2014 James Beard Award for Best Chef Pacific Northwest. Naomi was selected as one of America's Best New Chefs by Food Wine in 2009, and also appeared on multiple cooking competition shows, including as a contestant on Top Chef Masters and Iron Chef, and as a judge on Top Chef Knife Fight and Bobby's Triple Threat. She published her first book in 2016 entitled Taste and Technique, Recipes to Elevate Your Home Cooking, with Jamie Feldmar. In addition, during the pandemic, Naomi became involved in the Independent Restaurant Coalition (IRC). Shari is grateful for Naomi's friendship and contribution to Chefwise, and to be able to share their conversation today, where they discussed many topics in her book, including leadership, business, team, work-life balance, and fundamentals. James was also working with Shari's publisher Phaidon on a new book to tell the story of his restaurants at 70 Pine and his life growing up and cooking in NYC. Shari is proud to have called James a friend. Our deepest condolences to James' wife Kelly Kent and their children Gavin and Avery, and everyone who loved James too.   "Savoring Solitude: Women's Guide to Eating Out Alone While Traveling"   "Table for One: Dining Tips and Tricks for Solo Female Travelers" You have three meals a day, and you are solo. What do you do to enjoy these meals by yourself? You can have some great times if you follow these tips, or maybe you can add more tips for other travelers. Eating out alone can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience for solo travelers, including women aged 60 and above. Here are some tips to make dining alone more comfortable and enjoyable: Choose the Right Restaurant: Choose restaurants with a welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff. Look for establishments that cater to solo diners and offer comfortable seating options. You can find them on websites before you go or make reservations. When I was in Florence, Italy, I asked the hostel for a recommendation for a pizza restaurant, and they said Gusta was the best. I got a pizza for myself and a second one to return to the hostel, and I was greeted with a massive hug Avoid busy or Peak Hours, so ask if you're unsure which they are. Consider dining during off-peak hours to avoid crowds and long wait times. Lunchtime or early dinner hours are often quieter and more relaxed, making it easier to enjoy your meal in peace. I ate an early dinner in Chennai at a local diner. I asked for no chilis, but it was still spicy hot with chilis. I managed to eat it along with my peanut butter. Bring a Book or Electronic Device: Bring a book, e-reader, or smartphone to entertain yourself while waiting for your meal. Reading can help you feel more comfortable and confident dining alone. I listen with earbuds and enjoy podcasts and my recordings of conversations with my mom, who died years ago when I travel. Engage with the Staff: Discuss with the server or bartender if you feel comfortable doing so. They can provide recommendations, share local insights, and make you feel more at ease. A smile will get you started, and after that, just ask a question you may have about the food, the restaurant, or the city. In the Philippines, in El Nido, my server/bartender explained to me that he was a temp worker and he was finished with his shift. His pay included room and board. Sit at the Bar: Sitting at the bar can be an excellent option for solo diners, offering a more casual and interactive dining experience. You can chat with the bartender or fellow patrons and enjoy watching the action in the kitchen, which can be very entertaining to a solo traveler like me. One restaurant chain lets you sit in the kitchen to watch the meal preparation. Hold your head high, exude confidence, and enjoy the freedom to choose where and what to eat without compromise. I sometimes talk to myself to build my confidence when solo eating. Stay Safe: Be mindful of your surroundings and trust your instincts when dining alone. Choose well-lit and populated restaurants, avoid sharing personal information with strangers, and secure your belongings. Don't leave your purse on the back of your chair. Celebrate Solo Dining: View dining alone as an opportunity for self-care and empowerment. Treat yourself to a delicious meal, savor the experience, and celebrate your independence as a solo traveler.   Connect with Dr. Travelbest Drmarytravelbest.com Dr. Mary Travelbest Twitter Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Page Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Group Dr. Mary Travelbest Instagram Dr. Mary Travelbest Podcast Dr. Travelbest on TikTok Dr.Travelbest onYouTube

Today on our episode #370 of All in the Industry®, Shari Bayer is joined by Barkha Cardoz, a culinary entrepreneur, who is the Founder of Cardoz Legacy LLC, and Co-Creator of FC + B&B Masalas, as well as the Co-Founder of The Young Scientist Foundation. Born in Mumbai and raised in Bhopal, Barkha first stepped into hospitality in Mumbai at The Institute of Hotel Management, where she received her culinary training and met her husband, the late renowned chef Floyd Cardoz.  In the 2010s, Barkha worked alongside Floyd at their beloved restaurant Paowalla–which later became The Bombay Bread Bar–supervising operations and supply. In 2020 she launched a collection of masalas in partnership with Burlap & Barrel, and in honor of Floyd's legacy. They are in every way an extension of her kitchen--each is an iteration of a spice blend Floyd and Barkha developed and used at home, to make dinnertime easier. She has a new book, “With Love & Masalas: Everyday Indian Recipes from My Kitchen to Yours” (Burlap & Barrel; 11/19/23). Today's show also features Shari's PR tip to cook with love; Industry News on David Chang “pausing operations” at Momofuku Ko as featured in The New York Times; and Shari's Solo Dining experience at The River Cafe, chef/owner Ruth Roger's iconic Italian restaurant in London. Photo Courtesy of Lauren Volo.Listen at Heritage Radio Network; subscribe/rate/review our show at iTunes, Stitcher or Spotify.
