Brian McTaggart, Astros beat reporter for MLB.com, joins The Matt Thomas Show after the Cincinnati Reds completed the series sweep over the Astros with Thursday's 1-0 result. Hunter Brown allowed four hits and struck out six over six scoreless innings. However, the Astros offense was unable to bring runners home, giving the Reds nine consecutive wins over Houston. "They just got shut down pitching-wise," McTaggart said. "I think the one thing that is going to help is getting [Kyle] Tucker back." Tucker is expected to be activated from the injured list this weekend after being out with a shin fracture for over three months. "They're going to want him at the top of that order." When Tucker returns, "Ben Gamel" is a possibility to get sent down. "I think Chas [McCormick] is probably going to stay at this point." McTaggart also discusses Spencer Arrighetti's "ups and downs" showcased through Wednesday's nine-run first inning following a near no-hitter performance the previous start and how Matt Chapman's deal with the San Francisco Giants will affect Alex Bregman's next contract.

Oh, Hello there! This right here is the inaugural episode of the Untitled Mariners Podcast, a show for Joe Six Packs by Joe Six Packs. Your hosts, Jeromy & Derek (that's us), are devout Seattle Mariners fans who just needed someone to talk to about our favorite team. We are not experts, like some of the Mariners pods out there, & are just here to hangout with you. In this first episode, we introduce ourselves & tell you the what & why of the show. We also get into some of the bigger moves made by the Mariners this offseason, as well as reminisce for entirely too long about former 4th outfielders (I miss you so damn much Ben Gamel, please come home). This episode ran pretty long. In the future, you can expect a brand new one-hour episode every Monday morning! In addition, we will definitely be doing emergency pods if something big goes down in Mariner Kingdom[e]. You can find us on twitter: @umspod Jeromy: @jkrom34 Derek: @ibangmybros Youtube coming soon!

The Pirates dropped the rubber match today 9-5. The offense came alive early to give a 2-0 lead, but ultimately bad pitching and an offensive lull hindered the chances of a win.Kevin Newman, Rodolfo Castro, and Ben Gamel continued their hot streaks as each also collected two hits today. We discuss what we are seeing out of Castro and how he has found better success during his latest call. Also, though he had a 2-RBI double today, why Tucupito Marcano has struggled and what we want to see more of from him.Zach Thompson took the mount today and struggled for the most part. As DiNardo questioned a few nights ago, we discuss if you had to choose between Thompson and Wilson at this point which pitcher would it be? We also look to today's bullpen performance and takeaway some notes.
What can words do? Well, since Dennis Eckerlsey called out the Pirates team as being a hodgepodge of nothingness the offense has scored 16 runs in their last three games. Tonight, they not only had 5 runs, but they contributed towards it with 13 total hits. All but one starter had at least one hit, while Kevin Newman, Greg Allen, Bligh Madris, and Ben Gamel each enjoyed a multi-hit game. Though he had a terrible base running blunder that could've cost the lead, Ben Gamel redeemed himself at the plate with 3 total hits as well as a HBP in the 9th. It was Kevin Newman's second hit that gave the Pirates the lead in the 9th and then Michael Chavis' clutch hit vs. a lefty that ultimately won the game.Bryse Wilson did enough to keep the team in the game as he gave up 3 earned runs on 5 hits and 2 home runs. What am I making out of Bryse Wilson so far? Well you will hear just how he ultimately is opening my eyes ever so slightly.
Today just was not a good day for the 2022 Pirates. Many questionable decisions were made, Mitch Keller leaves the game with shoulder fatigue, Bryan Reynolds gets ejected, Oneil Cruz again goes hitless, and Shelton still refuses to get tossed from a game. However, the bullpen did an amazing job keeping this team in the game. Chase De Jong did a fabulous job with 4 scoreless innings which was backed up by scoreless appearances by Austin Brice and Manny Banuelos. Ben Gamel hit a clutch 3-run double to bring the game within 2 runs thanks to the bullpens efforts.Unfortunately, none of this was enough for this team to come back from the 5-run deficit it encountered as they allowed Mitch Keller to continue to pitch while clearly looking to be dealing with something potentially injury related.
It's been a really good string of starts for JT Brubaker heading into tonight's game, but he wasn't as sharp and effective this time around. JT gave up a good amount of hard contact, including his first home run allowed since June 16, though thanks to the Cubs base running blunders he did only give up 2 earned. The lack of offense was not surprising as the lineup saw not only Yoshi Tsutsugo and Josh VanMeter batting ahead of Oneil Cruz yet again, but also Josh VanMeter batting leadoff. Tonight seems to be the final straw that set DiNardo over his boiling point on the season and he lets out an early show vent based on these questionable decisions.Thankfully, we were able to see Oneil Cruz and Ke'Bryan Hayes each have a 2-hit performance as well as Ben Gamel showcasing everything that he can do, as he apparently seems to in Wrigley Field. We also point out something that we might want to keep an eye on with Oneil Cruz's approach.
Odds makers only have the Steelers favored in 4 games this upcoming season. Too many? Too few? Just right? Pirates insider Jason Mackey joined the show. Jason talked about the scene out in LA leading into the All Star Game. Jason talked about Oneil Cruz and why he won't get sent down due to his struggles. He commented on Termarr Johnson making the shortstop mention after being drafted Sunday night. He mentioned Ben Gamel and Jose Quintana as two players he sees being traded by the deadline.

He commented on Termarr Johnson making the shortstop mention after being drafted Sunday night. He mentioned Ben Gamel and Jose Quintana as two players he sees being traded by the deadline.
What more can be said about JT Brubaker since incorporating his 2-seamer? He has quite possibly one of his best starts going 7 scoreless innings with 9 punch outs and just 5 baserunners. He didn't have much offense behind him as Ben Gamel's RBI single was the lone run JT was able to get while on the mound. However, things started to get crazy in the 9th and then extra's with the Mickey Mouse rules. Michael Chavis ties it up in the 9th to get the game into extra's. Then the wheels fell off. Daniel Vogelbach and Ke'Bryan Hayes each had an RBI to bring the Pirates lead at 4-2. David Bednar entered the game to close things down, however he wasn't missing bats and ultimately gave up the lead as well as the game.
It was thanks to Ben Gamel's big HR with one on that gave the Pirates the late lead and ultimately the victory. Though he had his first error in 3 years which lead to a run earlier, he happily was able to erase it.The game didn't start pretty as DiNardo mentions. Brandon Woodruff had a no-hitter through 4 with 6 strikeouts and it just looked like one of those games that was quickly already out of reach. Zach Thompson only allowed 2 earned, but his command lacked most of the game and was able to escape some jams.Yoshi Tsutsugo, Kevin Neman, and Oneil Cruz all strung 3 hits in a row to start the late offense. Yoshi had to pretty hard hits today which has been something pleasant to see after his year he's had.

The 76-year-old York told his coaches and players that it seemed to be the right time after 28 years in Chestnut Hill and 50 in coaching overall. He said he is ready to spend more time traveling with his wife, Bobbie, and watch his grandchildren’s hockey, lacrosse, and soccer games. Madison Fire Department officials said paramedics treated and transported one person to a hospital with “serious injuries.” The name of the injured person wasn’t released. Wisconsin athletic officials said the fire involved roofing solvent material and occurred during construction. Wisconsin’s home football stadium is undergoing a renovation of its south end zone. NCAAFB – Saban: Current state of college football not ‘sustainable’ Alabama coach Nick Saban is concerned about the current state of college football. He recently told The Associated Press "I don’t think what we’re doing right now is a sustainable model.” The new era of college athletics sees players having more opportunities to earn money than ever before and more power to determine where they play. Saban says if college athletes are going to be paid, he would like Alabama to provide the same amount to everyone on his team while supporting their ability to earn as much as they can in endorsement and sponsorship deals after they get to college. NFL – Mayfield: Browns ‘disrespected,’ deceived him about future Baker Mayfield feels the Cleveland Browns deceived him about their offseason plans, which resulted in them trading for Deshaun Watson. Speaking on a podcast, Mayfield, whose tumultuous four-year run as Cleveland’s quarterback essentially ended when the team acquired Watson in a stunning deal last month with Houston, said the team was not upfront with him. Mayfield said he feels “disrespected 100 percent” because the team told him one thing and did another. Mayfield struggled while playing most of last season with a shoulder injury. He’s currently on Cleveland’s roster as the Browns try to work out a trade. Olympics – Allyson Felix says she’s retiring after 2022 track season Allyson Felix, who closed the Tokyo Games last year with more Olympic medals than any U.S. track and field athlete in history, says she will retire after the 2022 season. At age 35, Felix won a bronze medal in the 400 meters last summer in Tokyo, then followed it up with a gold medal in the 4×400 relay. Those were her 10th and 11th Olympic medals, which helped her pass Carl Lewis in the U.S. record book. In an Instagram post, Felix says her final season won’t be so much about the numbers on the clock as enjoying the moment with her fans.
