The Detroit Tigers continue their winnings ways, clinching 15 of their last 21 games. Coming out of Labor Day, the Tigers are five games out of the third and final wild-card spot in the American League, looking up at the Kansas City Royals and Minnesota Twins. What will it take for the Tigers to surpass one of those teams? Regardless, does the wild-card race change anything about how the Tigers plan to approach the offseason? To get to this point, the Tigers utilized their pitching depth to win games in August despite having just two traditional starters, thanks to the strategy created by president of baseball operations Scott Harris. Manager A.J. Hinch explains the role of the bulk reliever, as well as how it helps the Tigers win games. As for one of the starters, Tarik Skubal is running away with the AL Cy Young Award, but how dominant has he been compared to pitchers of the past? Rafael Devers continued to hammer Yankees pitching. Tarik Skubal continued to make a case for the AL Cy Young Award. And Paul Skenes continued to make history, becoming the first No. 1 Draft pick named to the All-Star Game the very next season. On today's episode: Act I: THE BIG STORIES: (0:55- 6:24) Rafael Devers crushed two more homers to give him 16 in his career at Yankee Stadium. They came a day after he reached 1,000 career hits. Boston's 3-0 win on Sunday Night Baseball delivered a series victory over the reeling Yankees. Tarik Skubal of the Tigers punctuated his All-Star selection with perhaps his best game in a season filled with big games. The AL Cy Young candidate fanned a career-high 13 batters across seven innings to complete a weekend sweep of the Reds. Skubal joined Mickey Lolich in Tigers lore as the only Detroit pitchers with 13 strikeouts, zero walks and no more than one run allowed in a game. Act II: WHIPAROUND: (6:24- 8:02) Paul Skenes continues to do things never before seen in baseball. The latest? The Pirates right-hander became the first player drafted No. 1 to become an All-Star the following season. He was among more than 30 first-timers named to next week's game. On the opposite end, Royals catcher Salvador Perez was chosen for the ninth time -- on the day he got his 1,500th career hit. The Phillies led all teams with seven players selected. Act III: LOOKING AHEAD: (8:02- 9:18) Chris Sale became an All-Star again at age 35 in his revival season with the Braves. Tonight, as he continues his bid to be the NL starting pitcher, he'll take on the D-backs on MLB Network at 9:40 p.m. ET. But first, at 7 ET on the Network, tune in for a celebration of the life of Giants legend Willie Mays. Gerrit Cole takes the mound for the final time in 2023 facing the Blue Jays with hopes of taking home the AL Cy Young Award come season's end. Join Tokyo Brandon, Steve Merril and Bryan Leonard for Wednesday's First Pitch!
The New York Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-3 to salvage the final game of their three-game series. Gerrit Cole bounced back from an iffy five-inning outing against the Pirates to throw eight innings of one-run ball on Thursday night. He also struck out nine and possibly nailed down the AL Cy Young Award. Stacey and Steve talk about that. Plus, Jake Bauers got the scoring started with a three-run jack to put the Yankees up 3-0 early, and Estevan Florial and Aaron Judge added RBI doubles to give the Yankees five runs, which they would need because of a not-so-great start to the ninth inning from Clay Holmes and a couple of not-so-great throws from Gleyber Torres. In sad news, the Somerset Patriots' season ended when the Binghamton Rumble Ponies eliminated them on Thursday night. The offense didn't show up in the two-game sweep, but friend of the show Richard Fitts had a strong six-inning start with eight strikeouts. Then, it's FanMail Friday! Closing out the month and first half of 2023 in the only way I know how, with nothing but passionate, unapologetic sports talk as I keep you apprised of all that's happening. On deck: (3:18) Baseball had a historic moment last night as Yankee starting pitcher, Domingo German, became the 24th pitcher in the sports history to throw a perfect game, as he did so against the Oakland A's. Could this be a springboard to what's been an up and down season to date? On the other side of town, you have Mets owner Steve Cohen, coming off of another state of the union regarding his underachieving ball club. Did he say all the right things? Am I a fan of what was said during his press conference yesterday? Then you have the exploits of Shohei Ohtani who hit two home runs, while striking out 10 in a win over the White Sox. Not only is he the frontrunner to winning another MVP, but is he also in the mix for the AL Cy Young Award as well? There's a surprisingly big series in the NL East this weekend as the second place Marlins visit the first place Braves. Can Miami thwart Atlanta's dominance over them throughout the past few years? (26:12) To no shock, the Chicago Blackhawks drafted the NHL's next great generational star with the first overall pick in a one Connor Bedard. With Edmonton Oilers back to back and three time MVP, Connor McDavid, head and shoulders the best player in the league, is there pressure for Bedard to deliver what his reputation and namesake has done to this point? I'll also discuss a couple of surprises at the top of the draft between Anaheim selecting Leo Karlsson instead of Adam Fantilli. And the Flyers taking a risk by drafting talented but mysterious, Matvei Michkov. I'll cover some of the big trades that have taken place so far and peek at some key dates on the upcoming NHL schedule as it was released yesterday. Lastly, I'll delve into the recent class that'll be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as Henrik Lundqvist, Tom Barrasso, Mike Vernon and Pierre Turgeon to name a few will be enshrined later this year. (37:53) The NBA free agency period is looming! Where will the likes of James Harden, Kyrie Irving, Draymond Green, Russell Westbrook, D'Angelo Russell, etc. will end up? (43:05) More NFL players are facing suspension in the next day or so after violating the league's gambling policy. Who will that be? And is it hypocritical for a league to be in bed with some of these gambling houses/websites, while coming down on players for placing wagers? There's a new executive director leading the players association and sad news as former NFL quarterback, Ryan Mallett passed away a couple of days ago at the age of 35. MLB – AP source: Verlander agrees to 2-year contract with Mets A person familiar with the negotiations says Justin Verlander has agreed to an $86.7 million, two-year contract with the New York Mets. The deal reunites the AL Cy Young Award winner with Max Scherzer and gives the Mets a high-profile replacement for Jacob deGrom. The deal includes a vesting third-year option, according to a person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because there was no announcement. Verlander leaves World Series champion Houston to step in for deGrom, who agreed to a $185 million, five-year contract with Texas last week. It also puts Verlander on the same team as Scherzer after they played together with the Tigers from 2010-14. Verlander turns 40 in February. MLB – Judge looms; Verlander, Turner deals heat up winter meetings Justin Verlander is going to the New York Mets. Trea Turner has agreed to a blockbuster deal with the Philadelphia Phillies. Baseball’s first winter meetings since 2019 kicked into high gear when Verlander agreed to an $86.7 million, two-year deal with New York, and Turner joined Philadelphia for a $300 million, 11-year contract. Clayton Kershaw also returned to the Los Angeles Dodgers on a $20 million, one-year deal. Who do the Super Halo Bros. think Ohtani should have been a finalist over? We'll tell you in segment 2!Plus, even though GM Perry Minasian said that Shohei will not be traded this offseason, it could still be possible that he will move to a contender at the Trade Deadline this summer, especially if the Angels are out of contention. While we want to see the Halos try to go for it with Ohtani in 2023, if the worst-case scenario happens, the team could still get a haul for Shohei. The Los Angeles Angels' Shohei Ohtani is once again in the AL MVP race for the second year in a row, and we're taking a look at how he stacks up against his competition, Yordan Alvarez, and of course, Aaron Judge! Will Shohei's combined pitching and hitting stats be enough to net him another MVP trophy, or will Aaron Judge's home run record season stand in his way? We'll dive into the stats in segment 1! Then, Shohei Ohtani was not a finalist for the AL Cy Young Award... what?!? While he may not have been the one to walk away with the trophy, Mike and Jon make the case that he should have been considered as a finalist against the likes of Justin Verlander, Dylan Cease, and Alek Manoah. Who do the Super Halo Bros. think Ohtani should have been a finalist over? We'll tell you in segment 2! Plus, even though GM Perry Minasian said that Shohei will not be traded this offseason, it could still be possible that he will move to a contender at the Trade Deadline this summer, especially if the Angels are out of contention. While we want to see the Halos try to go for it with Ohtani in 2023, if the worst-case scenario happens, the team could still get a haul for Shohei. We'll take a look at some big Rental deals of the past and show you why the Angels could still win big at the deadline! GET IN OUR VOICEMAIL! CALL US: (714) 409-6396 Tell us what's on your mind!
