Houston Astros outfielder Chas McCormick joins The Matt Thomas Show ahead of a three-game home series against the Oakland Athletics. After struggling with production at the plate, the Astros optioned Chas McCormick to Triple-A Sugar Land. However, McCormick quickly returned to the Major League club on September 2 after Jake Meyers was added to the paternity list. "I was hard on myself because I knew I was a better player," McCormick said. Since being recalled, McCormick is hitting .409 over his last six games and recorded three hits in Sunday's 12-6 loss. "I've been happy with my performance...it's been awesome to feel like the player I know I am." Even though he had support from teammates, coaches and family during his offensive slump, McCormick did not hide his self-disapproval. "I had to figure it out myself." The Astros hold a 4.5-game lead over the Seattle Mariners for the lead in the AL West, and productive at-bats from the bottom of the lineup will be important to securing the division and a spot in the postseason. "It's been a strange year," McCormick said. "We just want to gain some momentum," because "these last three weeks will be critical."

Brian McTaggart, Astros beat reporter for MLB.com, joins The Matt Thomas Show after the Cincinnati Reds completed the series sweep over the Astros with Thursday's 1-0 result. Hunter Brown allowed four hits and struck out six over six scoreless innings. However, the Astros offense was unable to bring runners home, giving the Reds nine consecutive wins over Houston. "They just got shut down pitching-wise," McTaggart said. "I think the one thing that is going to help is getting [Kyle] Tucker back." Tucker is expected to be activated from the injured list this weekend after being out with a shin fracture for over three months. "They're going to want him at the top of that order." When Tucker returns, "Ben Gamel" is a possibility to get sent down. "I think Chas [McCormick] is probably going to stay at this point." McTaggart also discusses Spencer Arrighetti's "ups and downs" showcased through Wednesday's nine-run first inning following a near no-hitter performance the previous start and how Matt Chapman's deal with the San Francisco Giants will affect Alex Bregman's next contract.

"They're going to want him at the top of that order." Brian McTaggart, Astros beat reporter for MLB.com, joins The Matt Thomas Show after the Astros avoided the sweep by shutting out the Philadelphia Phillies 10-0 on Wednesday. Yordan Alvarez recorded a two-run homer and two solo shots for his third career three-homer game. Spencer Arrighetti struck out 11 batters and held a no-hitter through seven innings. Chas McCormick also homered Wednesday but was optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land after the game concluded. "I do think Chas will be back," perhaps closer to the playoffs, because "he's got value," McTaggart said. Space is now cleared for veteran outfielder Jason Heyward, whom the Astros are expected to add to their active roster ahead of a four-game series against the Kansas City Royals. "I suspect [Heyward will] be starting in right field tonight." The Astros hold a 3.5-game lead over the Seattle Mariners in the AL West and are projected to make the postseason. With the addition of Yusei Kikuchi and other members of the rotation stepping up, the Astros have six quality starters, raising questions about who would take the mound in a playoff series. "It's a great problem to have if your Joe Espada." Despite giving up four runs and seven hits in five innings during Tuesday's 5-0 loss, "there is no way that Justin Verlander does not start a game in the playoffs." After September 1, all MLB teams will have an expanded roster of 28 players up from the standard 26. The Astros will be able to add a pitcher and a position player. While McTaggart believes the Astros will add a third catcher, there is a toss up between Forrest Whitley and Rafael Montero, who are both pitching well in Triple-A. "My gut tells me it will be Montero."

Brian McTaggart, Astros beat reporter for MLB.com, joins The Matt Thomas Show as the Astros complete back-to-back series sweeps following Wednesday's 2-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. "They really had to do everything right to win that game," McTaggart said. During this road trip, in which the Astros went 8-1, Kyle Tucker was seen working out on the field, a positive sign for the right fielder, who has been on the injured list since fouling a ball off his shin on June 3. "Once Tucker comes back, whenever that is, your one through five is really deep." Productive at-bats from the outfield have been lacking from the Astros offense, especially with Chas McCormick, whose batting average has dipped to .198 after going 0-4 with four strikeouts on Wednesday. If McCormick could get hot, "it would really deepen this lineup and make [Joe Espada] sleep better at night." McTaggart also discusses Justin Verlander making his second minor league rehab start for Triple-A Sugar Land, Ryan Pressly slumping in his eighth-inning role and Yusei Kikuchi performing well in each of his starts since being traded to the Astros.
