In this episode, Megan and Frank investigate the strange phenomenon of past life memories. Are past life memories evidence for reincarnation? Is what we remember a good guide to who we are? And how might a single identity span different lifetimes? Thinkers discussed in this episode include Plato, Pythagoras, Thomas Reid, J.M.E. In the first half, constitutional litigator Jonathan Emord, and Dr. Robert Verkerk with the Alliance for Natural Health, discussed natural health advocacy, and the need for a shift toward informed consumer choice. "We have a regime that is interested in censoring truthful information," Emord stated, arguing that many health issues could be managed through lifestyle changes rather than pharmaceutical interventions. He highlighted the historical censorship of nutrient claims by the FDA as well as the influence of the World Health Organization. Emord expressed skepticism about the WHO's alignment with public health interests. "They are completely and utterly controlled, not just by Big Pharma, but by individuals like Bill Gates," Verkerk remarked. The two expressed optimism about potential improvements under Robert Kennedy Jr.'s possible leadership at HHS, including dealing with health crises without infringing on people's freedom, protecting consumer rights, and bringing about FDA reforms. Dr. Verkerk elaborated on the Alliance for Natural Health's mission, which seeks to protect Americans' rights to choose natural health remedies. He emphasized the threats posed by special interests. "We're seeing this ever greater authoritarian creep, and rights are being taken left, right, and center," he commented, citing the alarming trend of declining health in the U.S., attributing it to the manipulation of science by powerful entities. On the topic of food safety, Emord pointed to a "protectionist regime" that limits competition and innovation, and contributes to frequent food recalls.-------------In the latter half, author Lynne McTaggart discussed her groundbreaking work in the realm of intention experiments, which explore the power of human thought to affect physical reality. "I wanted to find out... how can you have a thought and send it to somebody else and make them better?" she explained, reflecting on her transition from traditional journalism to consciousness research. She has conducted 41 intention experiments since 2007, measuring the effects of collective human intention on various subjects, including plants and water. "We had 37 of the 41 show measurable, positive, mostly significant effects," she reported. One of the first experiments involved having a group of participants send intention to a leaf, resulting in it glowing significantly brighter than the control. "It showed us we were onto something," and, how being in a group amplifies the effect, she said."Even a group of eight can be hugely powerful... all you need is a group and a common intention," McTaggart stated. She recalled an experiment aimed at reducing violence in Sri Lanka during a 25-year civil war, stating, "Within a few months, that war was over. Now, we can't say definitively that was us, but it looks pretty compelling." The discussion also touched on the concept of the "mirror effect," where altruistic intentions such as in the Sri Lanka experiment not only seem to have beneficial impacts in the world but can lead to personal healing among the participants. McTaggart announced a new peace intention experiment that will take place on February 1st, and those interested are invited to participate via a live stream.

Following Juan Soto's historic contract, the value of Kyle Tucker has increased drastically. The Houston Astros right fielder is set to become a free agent after the 2025 season, and general manager Dana Brown could look to benefit from trading Tucker before he hits the open market. "Definitely seemed like there is momentum building," Brian McTaggart, Astros beat reporter for MLB.com, said while attending the final day of MLB Winter Meetings in Dallas. Tucker and the Astros agreed on a $12 million contract last season after the 27-year-old lost his arbitration case the year prior. "There's always been a belief that Tucker was going to explore free agency," McTaggart said. Framber Valdez will also be a free agent next season at age 32. The left-handed pitcher held a 15-7 record, 2.91 ERA and 4.5 WAR in 2024, but Brown said he will "listen on anybody" when asked if he would consider a trade of either Valdez or Tucker. "I think it's less likely that [Valdez] gets traded," McTaggart said. The Astros still remain in the race to sign Alex Bregman, who is now a free agent. Houston offered the third baseman six years at about $156 million, and agent Scott Boras has stated that he is still communicating with Brown about a potential deal, but many remain pessimistic as Bregman is reportedly seeking a number closer to $200 million. "I find it hard to believe that the Astros would go above six years." The Astros have their ace, third baseman and right fielder dominating the headlines from Winter Meetings, and there is a chance that the 2025 season's lineup would feature a lot of new faces in key positions, but could the Astros still win the division with a restructured roster? "They're not the 2019 Astros," but they "could still be a pretty good team," McTaggart said.

The Houston Astros were once 10 games back from the division lead but managed to clinch the AL West and return to the postseason for the ninth time in the past 10 seasons. However, hopes of returning to the ALCS for the eighth consecutive year vanished following back-to-back home losses to the Detroit Tigers in the AL Wild Card Series. Hunter Brown started in Wednesday's 5-2 defeat, giving up only one run after six innings. Bryan Abreu was able to hold the Astros' 2-1 lead in the seventh, but things unraveled in the eighth when Ryan Pressly and Josh Hader took the mound. The Astros offense was unable to rally, securing the win for the Tigers. "At the end of the day, they just didn't hit," Brian McTaggart, Astros beat reporter for MLB.com, said. With the conclusion of the regular season, the focus shifts to the offseason, where the Astros will look to upgrade a flawed lineup. "This team has a lot of things on their checklist this offseason." The biggest question mark is placed on third base, as Alex Bregman is set to become an unrestricted free agent and could leave Houston for a more desirable contract. "He means so much to the clubhouse." The Astros have a history of not paying the market and thus not extending homegrown players, such as Carlos Correa and George Springer, so general manager Dana Brown might have to find a third baseman to fill the shoes of the two-time All-Star. While Bregman's future will be the main headline for weeks to come, McTaggart also adds that the Astros should address other positions, such as first base and the bullpen.

Brian McTaggart, Astros beat reporter for MLB.com, joins The Matt Thomas Show with Ross to discuss the Astros securing their fourth consecutive American League West title with Tuesday's 4-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners. The Astros are now locked into the AL's No. 3 seed in the Wild Card Series. The final regular-season home game Wednesday afternoon saw Alex Bregman start at third base. However, in the fourth inning, manager Joe Espada removed Bregman from the game to receive an ovation from the fans at Minute Maid Park in what could be his final regular-season home game with the Astros. "I thought it was a nice moment," McTaggart said. "This could be it... It will be weird next year if [Bregman] won't be here." The Astros selected Bregman with the No. 2 pick in the 2015 MLB draft, with Bregman making his debut a year later. As a two-time All-Star who helped the Astros earn their first two World Series championships, Bregman has "taken on a huge leadership role." Bregman is set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and while general manager Dana Brown has said he will engage agent Scott Boras with talks of an extension, "it's hard to imagine [Bregman's] going to stay with the Astros," especially with the organization's history of not retaining homegrown players, such as Carlos Correa and George Springer. The Astros final series of the regular season starts Friday in Cleveland, and Yordan Alvarez will not be with the team. Alvarez is recovering from a sprained right knee, and even if he returns in time for the Wild Card Series, he will most likely not play left field for perhaps the entire playoff run. "They do have a whole week to rest him." The best-of-three AL Wild Card Series begins Tuesday at Minute Maid Park, and McTaggart expects Framber Valdez, Hunter Brown and Yusei Kikuchi to lead the postseason rotation in that order. "That's a pretty tough 1-2-3."

"They paid a really high price," but "he sort of changed the ascent of this team," McTaggart said. Kikuchi has cemented himself in the top three of the Astros pitching rotation as the postseason approaches. Justin Verlander, who has struggled as of late, has a chance to "reestablish himself" Friday against the Angels. Brian McTaggart, Astros beat reporter for MLB.com, joins The Matt Thomas Show after the Astros avoided the sweep against the Oakland Athletics with Thursday's 6-3 victory. Framber Valdez allowed a run on five hits and a walk while striking out six in just over six innings. "He's keeping his emotions in check," McTaggart said. With Valdez, Yusei Kikuchi and Hunter Brown all pitching well, manager Joe Espada has "got some good choices" when it comes to constructing his postseason rotation. If they could clinch the division before their final regular season series against the Cleveland Guardians, the Astros would be able to rest their starters before the Wild Card round. "You got to hope that last series doesn't mean anything." Injuries have been the main concern for the Astros all season long, and with the closing weeks approaching, the roster has not been freed from this challenge. Second baseman Jose Altuve exited Wednesday's game with right side discomfort and did not play Thursday. However, both Altuve and Espada do not seem worried about the injury. "It wouldn't surprise me if he played this weekend." Optimism will carry into the outfield, where Kyle Tucker is expected to make his return to right field after starting his first few games back from a fractured shin as a designated hitter. "Tucker might play right field tonight."

Chas McCormick also homered Wednesday but was optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land after the game concluded. "I do think Chas will be back," perhaps closer to the playoffs, because "he's got value," McTaggart said. Space is now cleared for veteran outfielder Jason Heyward, whom the Astros are expected to add to their active roster ahead of a four-game series against the Kansas City Royals. "I suspect [Heyward will] be starting in right field tonight." The Astros hold a 3.5-game lead over the Seattle Mariners in the AL West and are projected to make the postseason. With the addition of Yusei Kikuchi and other members of the rotation stepping up, the Astros have six quality starters, raising questions about who would take the mound in a playoff series. "It's a great problem to have if your Joe Espada." Despite giving up four runs and seven hits in five innings during Tuesday's 5-0 loss, "there is no way that Justin Verlander does not start a game in the playoffs." After September 1, all MLB teams will have an expanded roster of 28 players up from the standard 26. The Astros will be able to add a pitcher and a position player. While McTaggart believes the Astros will add a third catcher, there is a toss up between Forrest Whitley and Rafael Montero, who are both pitching well in Triple-A. Brian McTaggart, Astros beat reporter for MLB.com, joins The Matt Thomas Show following the Houston Astros avoiding the sweep against the Pittsburgh Pirates with Wednesday's 5-4 victory. The Astros were able to end a three-game losing streak; however, the offense is still "underwhelming," McTaggart said. Prior to the MLB trade deadline, the Astros traded Jake Bloss, Will Wagner and Joey Loperfido to the Toronto Blue Jays for left-handed starter Yusei Kikuchi, adding pitching depth to an injured rotation. "They got a guy who they think can eat innings," and "they don't need him to pitch at this elite level." While the price was high to acquire Kikuchi, the Astros are "trying to win now," and who knows what prospects like Jake Bloss are "going to be in five years?" McTaggart also comments on Kyle Tucker moving to the 60-day injured list. Tucker is "not close to a Minor League rehab assignment."

Brian McTaggart, Astros beat reporter for MLB.com, joins The Matt Thomas Show after the Houston Astros concluded their .500 road trip with Wednesday's 8-1 victory over the Oakland Athletics. With the Los Angeles Angels sweeping the Seattle Mariners, the Astros take the lead in the AL West. Seattle's "offense is so bad," so the division race "is very much wide open" for the Astros, McTaggart said. The Astros are returning to Minute Maid Park to host the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Astros schedule is "not getting any easier," so "they just got to worry about the division at this point." The MLB trade deadline is approaching on July 30, and the Astros have areas of concern that could be addressed through a deal. "If they don't" get a pitcher, "then something drastically has gone wrong." However, McTaggart says there are some "untouchables" when it comes to trade capital within the Astros organization, specifically Jacob Melton, A.J. Blubaugh and Brice Matthews. "These teams want young value."

Brian McTaggart, Astros beat reporter for MLB.com, joins The Matt Thomas Show to recap the 2024 MLB Draft that saw the Houston Astros select Walker Janek, a catcher from Sam Houston State, with the No. 28 overall pick. Janek grew up in Corpus Christi, home of the Astros' Double-A affiliate. The Astros "thought he was the best catcher in the draft," McTaggart said. While Janek might be the catcher of the future, the Astros have problems in the present that general manager Dana Brown will attempt to alleviate before the trade deadline on July 30. The Astros have a depth in the outfield which could be used as capital in acquiring pitching. "I just don't see them trading [Joey] Loperfido." However, "[Jake] Meyers has more value at this point than [Chas] McCormick."

Brian McTaggart, Astros beat reporter for MLB.com, joins The Matt Thomas Show after the Astros defeated the Miami Marlins 9-1 on Wednesday at Minute Maid Park. Framber Valdez allowed one run on six hits and a walk while striking out 10 over seven innings. The Astros have a chance to complete a series sweep over the Marlins on Thursday with Jake Bloss starting on the mound. As the MLB trade deadline approaches on July 30, the Astros have an opportunity to fill some gaps on the roster, especially at first base and the pitching rotation. "They want to add a bat," but the Astros "can't continue giving away their top prospects year after year," McTaggart said. "In a way there are some untouchables" within the organization, so "they're going to have to find another way to get a deal done." During the conversation, news breaks that Jose Altuve will miss the All-Star Game. Altuve would "rather just stay home and heal up for the second half" of the season. McTaggart also discusses the latest updates on Justin Verlander, Lance McCullers Jr. and more.
