Today's episode features Matt Thomas, radio play-by-play voice of the Rockets, calling the second-half highlights of Wednesday's thrilling Game 5 victory in Los Angeles. With the Lakers now up 3-2 in the series, Game 6 is Friday night in Houston. The Rockets are hoping to become the first team in NBA playoff history (0-160) to overcome a 3-0 series deficit to win, and they are already one of only 16 teams to push a series to Game 6 after losing the first three games.
When the Astros come to Baltimore we always reach to longtime Houston sports voice Matt Thomas of Sportstalk790 to update us on the once-mighty (and trashcan banging) franchise to get us current. And in the land of the Rockets playoff misery and aftermath of the Texans draft to rebuild C.J. Stroud's offense, the current last-place and unfamiliar misery has settled into the Astros reality this spring for Houston sports fans. Payments is full of noise: legacy processors, vendor sprawl, duplicate onboarding, and merchants who just want their money faster. We cut through it by showing a pragmatic path from point products to a unified embedded finance stack that actually scales. With Jaris founder and CEO Chris Aristides and VP of Platform Partnerships Matt Thomas, we unpack why “foundation first” beats bolt-on every time and how to make it work across multiprocessor portfolios without ripping out your core.We start with the playbook behind winners like Square and Stripe: remove complexity, unify the experience, and make multi-product adoption effortless. Then we translate that into the realities of processors and ISOs. Chris explains the banking backbone - independent RTN, sponsor bank alignment, and vertically integrated ledgers—that makes settlement reliable and compliant. Matt breaks down managed settlement as the key unlock: a dynamic funding layer that normalizes Fiserv, TSYS, Worldpay, and Elavon flows, enabling split settlement, instant payouts, and automated loan repayment without custom builds for each backend. From there we stack the products merchants actually use. Lending remains a high-margin anchor with powerful retention, while instant payouts reach a far larger share of the base with a clean pay-as-you-use model that works on weekends and holidays. High-yield savings ties it together for cash management, all delivered through one onboarding, one golden merchant record, and a white-labeled UI that honors sub-ISO relationships and trust. The result is tangible: fewer forms, faster activation, clearer visibility for ops, and a material lift in retention and revenue. If you lead partnerships, product, or operations at a processor or ISO, this conversation gives you a concrete framework to touch the other 95 percent of your merchants, modernize onboarding, and launch new revenue lines through a single integration. This isn't just about cookies. It's about resilience, leadership under pressure, and what it really takes to rebuild when everything feels like it's unraveling.Matt didn't plan to build a national cookie brand during a pandemic. But when his branding agency collapsed in March 2020, he and his wife Elise went all-in on Cookie Co.—a passion project born from her lifelong love of baking. From selling cookies out of their garage (while neighbors suspected something sketchy) to hitting $1.3M in year one, the growth was explosive. Franchise interest poured in. Within a few years, they reached 31 locations across multiple states. Then the economy shifted.Eggs and butter doubled. Inflation soared. Franchisees struggled. Listen now on Apple, Spotify, and YouTube.—Matt Thomas is a Design, Research, and Product leader at Motability Operations where he leads the Design and Research efforts for a range of products, from a commerce platform for selling used cars to colleague-facing tools that support that website. His team also designs for a vehicle refurbishment workshop, a completely different challenge with a unique set of users, which keeps things interesting. They work closely with Product and Technology teams to bring these products to life, always focusing on learning from the people who use them. He is super passionate about broadening where the team gathers insights and making research more accessible, so teams can make better product decisions. In our conversation, we discuss:* How Matt defines “broadening research” and why it starts outside of formal studies.* Real-world examples of overlooked insight sources like sales calls, account managers, and field teams.* The internal system Matt's team uses to collect, tag, and feed sales feedback into their repository every day.* Why traditional research reports don't always land and what to try instead.* Tactics for building trust and buy-in, even when you're blocked from direct customer access. Some takeaways:* Matt encourages researchers to stop thinking of research as only formal studies. Some of the richest data comes from support calls, onboarding conversations, and field visits. These sources already exist in most companies but often get ignored because they don't look like traditional research. When you tap into them, you're bringing context into the room that would otherwise stay invisible.* It's tempting to jump straight into tagging or setting up automations, but Matt suggests beginning with a conversation. Ask a customer-facing teammate what they're hearing. Offer to sit with them for an hour or buy them coffee. Building trust first, then showing how their insights feed into decisions, opens more doors long-term than asking for data access right away.* Matt's team gets sales feedback emailed to them daily and loads it into their repository in batches. But even without automation, he recommends reviewing 20 feedback items a day which is just enough to build a habit and gather useful patterns. That creates a log of real impact you can use later to justify hiring or tooling decisions. Don't aim to boil the ocean; aim to show traction.* The goal isn't to create a polished report. It's to influence a decision. Matt's team shares snippets via Slack or email, hosts research gallery walk-throughs, and tests lightweight formats like social-style insight posts. Different stakeholders need different communication and just because a report is well-written doesn't mean it will be read.* From usability bingo nights to Iron Man-style gallery sessions, Matt embraces experimentation in how research is shared. Some people need a sticky note wall. Some need a voice clip in their inbox. If one format doesn't land, try another. The most impactful insights often come wrapped in something a little unexpected but perfectly timed.Where to find Matt:* LinkedInStop piecing it together. Wex and AC react to the Rockets' sloppy win over the Mavericks, plus break down their thoughts on the news of players moved at the trade deadline. Is this going to help or hurt the Houston Texans entering the 2026 NFL offseason? Is there a chance the Texans can still make a run to the playoff?
In this episode of Hoopsology, hosts Justin Goodrum and Matt Thomas sit down with Michael Grange — journalist, NBA analyst, and author of Basketball Now: The Inside Stories of the Brightest Stars of the NBA. Grange takes us inside his new book and shares his insights on the current state of the league, the rise of Canadian basketball, and why this era of the NBA might be the most talented in history. From LeBron, KD, and Steph to rising stars like Victor Wembanyama and Paolo Banchero, we explore the generational shift happening in real time.
