Episode 68: Wayne Wilson. I was lucky to get Wayne Wilson, the legendary coach from RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) to hop on the prohockeypod this week for 35 minutes. Wayne went to Bowling Green State University where he won a National Championship in 1984 before embarking on his coaching career. He was able to work under the legendary coach Jerry York for a few years and learn the ropes. A chance to become a Head Coach at D3 RIT came open and Wayne didn't hesitate. He went on to win Coach of the Year in his 2nd season and a few years later, RIT made the jump to D1 hockey. After being promoted to D1, RIT continued to have success which resulted in Wayne winning D1 Coach of the Year in 09/10. For a school that didn't have athletic scholarships until just recently, Wayne has consistently built solid programs and been competitive each season. One of his great memories is from 2010 when RIT made it to the Frozen Four. He is very humble, full of experience/knowledge and I was happy to get the chance to speak with him. Hope you enjoy!

Wisconsin athletic officials said the fire involved roofing solvent material and occurred during construction. Wisconsin’s home football stadium is undergoing a renovation of its south end zone. NCAAFB – Saban: Current state of college football not ‘sustainable’ Alabama coach Nick Saban is concerned about the current state of college football. He recently told The Associated Press "I don’t think what we’re doing right now is a sustainable model.” The new era of college athletics sees players having more opportunities to earn money than ever before and more power to determine where they play. Saban says if college athletes are going to be paid, he would like Alabama to provide the same amount to everyone on his team while supporting their ability to earn as much as they can in endorsement and sponsorship deals after they get to college. NFL – Mayfield: Browns ‘disrespected,’ deceived him about future Baker Mayfield feels the Cleveland Browns deceived him about their offseason plans, which resulted in them trading for Deshaun Watson. Speaking on a podcast, Mayfield, whose tumultuous four-year run as Cleveland’s quarterback essentially ended when the team acquired Watson in a stunning deal last month with Houston, said the team was not upfront with him. Mayfield said he feels “disrespected 100 percent” because the team told him one thing and did another. Mayfield struggled while playing most of last season with a shoulder injury. He’s currently on Cleveland’s roster as the Browns try to work out a trade. Olympics – Allyson Felix says she’s retiring after 2022 track season Allyson Felix, who closed the Tokyo Games last year with more Olympic medals than any U.S. track and field athlete in history, says she will retire after the 2022 season. At age 35, Felix won a bronze medal in the 400 meters last summer in Tokyo, then followed it up with a gold medal in the 4×400 relay. Those were her 10th and 11th Olympic medals, which helped her pass Carl Lewis in the U.S. record book. In an Instagram post, Felix says her final season won’t be so much about the numbers on the clock as enjoying the moment with her fans. Mayfield said he feels “disrespected 100 percent” because the team told him one thing and did another. Mayfield struggled while playing most of last season with a shoulder injury. He’s currently on Cleveland’s roster as the Browns try to work out a trade. Great chatting with Joe Bertagna in this episode as he joined Fred Pletsch and I to talk hockey, with some great stories his days as a commissioner, player, and goalie coach! Before we jumped into the hockey talk, Joe shared with us how he and 3 members of his family had COVID-19 earlier this year, he's recovered and doing well now. The 2019-20 season was Joe's final season as commissioner of Hockey East, he spent 23 years leading that conference, 15 before his Hockey East days leading the ECAC, he leaves NCAA hockey as the longest running conference commissioner in NCAA Hockey history. We discussed his days as a goalie, including his time playing at Harvard, and later in his career, coaching the Women's hockey team at Harvard. We also heard some great stories from Joe involving his playing, coaching and days as a commissioner, one of which was about the late, great Badger Bob Johnson, and another about his good friend Ben Smith, who also had COVID-19 earlier this season. Joe also talked with us about the great Bobby Orr and something he did for Orr for years as the commissioner of Hockey East. We also talked about Jerry York of Boston College, no coach in the history of the sport has more wins than York. Great stories and great time catching up with Joe in this episode!!

Lobey, Lynchie and Hank open the new year with their thoughts on that rotten stinker of a Patriots loss to the Dolphins, 27-24, last Sunday! What was that? Bob thinks it might be the day the music died for this Pats dynasty! Mike says "Not so fast. These are the Patriots!' It wasn't a great week all around for owner Robert Kraft, where prosecutors in Florida are now talking about charging him with a felony for last night's involvement in a Jupiter, Florida sex sting operation. This, after a low court had already ruled any video evidence was wrongfully obtained and wasn't admissible in court. They also talked about what the best sports story of the past decade was and there were a number of them tossed around. Lynchie also saluted Boston College hockey coach Jerry York for his recent induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame and then the Lynchie, Lobey and Hank talked about what great college hockey coaches the city of Boston has been fortunate to have running the local programs! Happy New Year!

How is offense like a housecat? We begin by having Jerry York give us a great analogy to recap a great weekend of hockey here in Boston. The top four teams in Hockey East made it to the TD Garden for the HEA semifinals and final. Hockey fans saw an awful lot this weekend. First, you had Notre Dame's final game as a member of Hockey East. The Fighting Irish are off to the Big Ten after the NCAA Tournament. Their coach Jeff Jackson explained during a press conference that, while Hockey East had been welcoming to the folks from South Bend, it was never truly home. Perhaps it just felt that way after UMass-Lowell trounced Notre Dame in their semifinal matchup. Friday night's second game was the always-heated Commonwealth Avenue rivalry, which now has a loud new chapter to their archive. A controversial finish nearly overshadowed an unforgettable third period. Hear what one of the central players involved in the ending controversy had to say about that fated final faceoff. It all culminated in Saturday night's final, the fifth in a row for Lowell. Once in the middle of Hockey East, the University of Massachusetts campus has vaulted itself to a national powerhouse. We'll be back on Friday to discuss the River Hawks' chances, and everybody else's, in the NCAA Tournament.

With most of the non-conference action out of the way, co-hosts Nate Ewell (@nateewell, @collegehockey) and Brad Schlossman (@SchlossmanGF) break down the contenders remaining in each race. In addition, they look back at some crazy games last weekend and marvel at Jerry York approaching 1,000 career wins.
With football season winding down, the attention of many are already pointing their eyes at the frozen water of Conte Forum, where Boston College hockey begins its search for a sixth national championship. One month into the season, it's been eventful for the Eagles, having lost as many players as they have games (one apiece). At 5-1, Boston College is a top five team in the nation, riding the crest of being one of the power schools of Hockey East. Along with UMass-Lowell and defending national champion Providence, the trio represent the potential next batch of teams ready to represent in Tampa this year in the postseason. But it's still early, and there's going to be bumps along the way. One of those bumps came last week when Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Jeremy Bracco departed BC after just one month month as a member of the Eagles. It set off a firestorm of opinions on message board and social media, and it prompted possibly the most emotional response anyone's ever heard out of the Eagles and their head coach, Jerry York. So with football heading towards Senior Day on Saturday against NC State, we take a step aside to let things marinade. We let the hockey guys step into the booth as Eastern Bias goes LIVE for the first time this year!
