Send us a textEarlier this week, the programme for the Portobello Book Festival was launched. Throughout the first weekend in October, the library will be buzzing with writers launching new books, talking about them, discussing the work of others and laying bare what it means to be an author. This is the 16th Festival and is probably alone in the UK for being free. Tickets will be available from Monday but to get a feel for what will be on offer, David Calder spoke to Joanne Baird and her daughter Grace, now both trustees of this popular event.

I was delighted and excited to chat to Billy Kay: writer, broadcaster, multi-linguist, and champion of the Scots language - most notably through his book 'The Mither Tongue', which is quite rightly regarded as a classic of contemporary Scottish culture. Billy is a much-honored individual but, for many people, he came to prominence recently for his address to the Scottish parliament - the first ever to have been presented in Scots. Scots in the Scottish Parliament - heaven forbid! In this episode we chat about Billy's early life in his beloved Galston in Ayrshire, his education, his love of the Scots language and his passion for Scottish independence, which, as he sees it, is the only route to saving the language and culture of Scots. With his deep knowledge of Scottish history he effortlessly roams across several centuries of Scottish witers and characters: Burns, Sir Walter Scot, James Boswell, the painters JD Ferguson, Allan Ramsay and more. The thing about Billy is that - just talking to him - made me feel more intelligent than I am. that's a talent! Enjoy. Links Billy Kay. The local elections are upon us and we ask how democratic Scottish local government actually is.When compared to our Nordic and European neighbours the answer is, not very. Lesley reflects on this and wonders if the SNP is not just  missing an opportunity to create genuine local democracy but fertile ground for independence.https://www.nordichorizons.org/powerful-pint-sized-democracy-nordic-style/?fbclid=IwAR0bjcfd-SQtmLXZTFESU87tiAsjgNY5c-7fbOKkAEqGSGxsEDFwY0uTtCk We examine the performances of Sir Keir Starmer and Anas Sarwar and question their electoral strategies both in Scotland and England. Likeability in Scotland, and being neither Boris Johnson nor Jeremy Corbyn in England, seem to be the tactics. Will this be enough to ensure any form of electoral success on Thursday?Billy Kay's recent address in Scots to the Scottish Parliament kicked off a storm over his use o the Mither Tongue. What is it about Scots that so upsets so many unionists? We also look at the ongoing non coverage by the BBC of the Michelle Mone PPE Medpro investigation and Andrew Marr's belief that unilateral nuclear disarmament is a vote loser if and when we get to indyref2.★ Support this podcast ★

It's an outside broadcast this week as Lesley takes advantage of the sunny weather to join me from the back step of her cottage. Saturday saw the launch of the Declaration of Arbroath movie made by Lesley and filmmaker Charlie Stuart. This in the deafening silence surrounding the 700th anniversary from national  broadcasters, with the notable exception of Billy Kay's three part series on Radio Scotland. We try and pick apart why this lack of enthusiasm for such a seminal event at all levels of Scottish civil society. We rarely, in fact never, show much sympathy for Boris Johnson but his recent admission to an ICU with Covid 19 made us both reflect on the pernicious nature of the virus and what, if any, impact this experience may have on Johnson and his premiership. Sunday night saw the resignation of Scotland's Chief Medical Officer Dr Catherine Calderwood in controversial circumstances. Was this a case of, do as I say not as I do,hypocrisy or of a valuable public servant being unjustifiably hounded out of office? Keir Starmer has been elected as Labour Leader and reappointed Ian Murray as Scottish secretary. Jackie Baillie also defeated Matt Kerr to become Scottish Deputy Leader. Is this Labour going backwards to the future? As always there's all the other stuff and nonsense to be going on with as well.

And you're about to find out more than you ever knew or wanted to know about the Vienna Settlers Movement, Red Vienna and the impact of them both on housing, culture, and democracy right through until the present day. What can it teach us about the relationship between popular movements and progressive local governments? We can't escape from Brexit, in so many ways, and Lesley ruthlessly dissects the recent Boris Johnson " Reach out to the Remainers" speech. She ignores his crass comments and focuses on the lack of content and blatant appeal to the emotions from Johnson and his band of Brexiteer Merrie Englanders. We speculate on Labour's recent policy statements on cooperative nationalisation and its potential appeal north and south of the border. The recent return of the in-proportion BBC weather map leads Lesley to discuss, well, weather forecasting. And, by various digressions, takes me to the Scottish visits of Corbyn, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and what links them.    All of the above plus, fungi, Billy Kay on Don Roberto, and two upcoming Nordic Horizons events.

They have it in other places too, it just goes by a different name. For the 139th (sort of) episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Billy Kay, and the above is only one of the subjects we talked about.Billy has for years been writing, broadcasting and producing material on Scottish Culture and Scots language, for the BBC and internationally, and is often to be seen giving talks around the country. He also currently has a show you can listen to on the iplayer... Scotland's Black History.I asked him to come on because he is one of the best qualified people to talk about the importance of building confidence in Scottish culture, and how that plays into the campaign for Scottish Indepence. At the end of the episode there is also a little Robert-the-Brucie bonus, which regards this.Hope you enjoy.LINKShttp://www.billykay.co.ukhttp://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/https://twitter.com/billykayscothttps://twitter.com/billykayscothttps://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/2016/08/31/on-russia-today/https://twitter.com/mgreenwellhttps://www.facebook.com/TheScottishIndependencePodcast

Is it possible to think of Scotland outside Europe? Our special guest this week is author, presenter and social historian Billy Kay, who argues that our relationship with Europe is so intertwined with our history – stretching long before the Act of Union – that it would be unnatural to turn our back on the Continent. Billy points out that Scottish sea trade with the Baltic states, Scandinavia and Russia was crucial to our merchants long before the 18th century. We have long links with Russia and Poland, so much so that Scottish societies of merchants existed there in the 1500s. He points also to the influence of the Scottish Enlightenment on French educational history, and long links to Italian and French places of study. Today’s podcast is a valuable discussion that puts Scotland firmly in the European context. Billy and his host, Derek Bateman, discuss the prospects for next month’s EU referendum, its implications for Scotland, and even the impact of a “Brexit” vote on Scottish public opinion and European views of Scotland in that scenario. Billy remains of the belief that Scotland will be independent, although he accepts the referendum may be several years away. Here he explains why.
