Matthew Turner and Amelie Thomas (Fatal Attractions podcast) join Flixwatcher to review Matthew's choice Paprika. Paprika (2006) is an adult animated Japanese sci-fi fantasy film directed by Satoshi (Tokyo Godfathers) Kon. It is based on the novel of the same name by Yasutaka Tsutsui and it is claimed to have been a significant influence on Christopher Nolan's Inception, although Nolan has never confirmed this. Dr Atsuko Chiba is a scientist by day and a dream detective at night, working under the code name Paprika. When a device called at DC Mini, a device to the help psychiatric patients, is stolen Paprika and Detective Toshimi Konakawa's dreams and reality begin to merge as they try to recover the device. Recommendability for Paprika was mixed, although we all agreed the animation style was incredible and detailed. The complicated plot and surrealism isn't going to be for everyone. My guest today is Matthew Turner is a British author who wrote the book The Successful Mistake: How 163 of the world's greatest entrepreneurs transform failure and adversity into success on the back of interviewing hundreds of successful entrepreneurs, authors, investors, and thought-leaders. As well as writing his own books, Matthew ghostwrites both articles and books for other successful entrepreneurs and thought-leaders, in between spending time with his two children. nohustle.co beyondbook.co It's Matthew's second time on the show; it's always such a pleasure to see him and chat. I highly recommend scrolling down and finding his Beyond the Pale episode — where we explore personal transformation and rediscovering your vision through a fictional story of a billionaire entrepreneur. Today, we have an opportunity to learn from intimate conversations with 163 entrepreneurs that Matthew had the chance to interview; we examine the big idea behind the book — how failures can lead to future success. Matthew explains how successful people he interviewed in the book still experience worry, fear, and self-doubt despite their money, fame, and freedom. We zoom in on the topic of financial pain and the entrepreneurial path. Matthew shares the mantra of "less doing, more living" and the importance of not neglecting one's health. I found it very helpful to be reminded that life without hardship doesn't exist, and it's all about pushing through challenges. I really like the idea of asking big questions when in doubt. Today: We talked about Matthew's book "Beyond the Pale," including its inception, the meaning behind the title, and the symbolic mountain lake on the cover. Matthew shared insights on the hero's journey in his book, exploring personal transformation, business success, and a rediscovery of vision. We discussed the various characters the hero meets in the book and the wisdom and advice they impart to him. We talked about the recurring theme of praise for achievement, reflecting on how it mirrors today's achievement-focused world, and the challenges of escaping this mindset. Matthew shared thoughts on the concept that the hero is not self-made, challenging the conventional idea of being self-made and its implications. We discussed a powerful question from the book that prompts readers to challenge what they think they know to be true. We talked about the importance of rest and slowing down, focusing on a significant moment in the book where the hero takes time to reflect. Matthew shared insights on the theme of control, including the realization of limitations in controlling every aspect of life. We discussed the multi-faceted concept of freedom as depicted in the book, including the paradox between wealth and feeling imprisoned. We talked about the paradox of desire, examining the quote, “The more you want something, the less likely you are to find it,” and its wider implications. Matthew shared thoughts on the theme of scarcity, including how it's embraced early in life and the difficulty of shaking it off. We concluded the interview by discussing Matthew's personal definition of success and how it resonates with his overall life philosophy.   https://turndog.co/ https://beyondbook.co/ ---- Crisis Investing: 100 Essays - My new book. If you're only subscribing to someone else's version of success, it's not going to make you happy because it's not your version; you never really wanted it. We have to take time on the front end to figure out what that success means to us. ~ Matthew Turner How do you define success? For most of us, the word “success” is tied to professional recognition, money and some level of prestige. But do those things truly bring happiness? And what is the cost of achieving them? Author Matthew Turner explores those questions in his latest book, Beyond the Pale, in which his protagonist achieves society's version of success, only to find he never truly wanted it. In this fictional account, Ferdinand fulfills the expectations of what he was told was success, only to discover that success means something entirely different to him personally.  According to Matthew, personal success means different things to different people–one size doesn't fit all. The way to discover what success means to each of us begins with focusing on the one thing we truly own–our values, and moving forward from there.  Here at Brilliantly Resilient, we believe that defining personal values is the first step to accessing resilience and rising after challenges. When we act based on what is genuinely important to us, we follow our true path and open the door to opportunities that resonate with us–helping us to define our own versions of success, and allowing our brilliance to shine. It's not always easy to change; as Matthew reminds us, Whenever you have an awakening, it's almost always easier to roll over and stay asleep, but it is worth it. Take time to decide what success means to YOU, and jettison the guilt you may feel at abandoning a path that may not lead you to where you really want to be. Tune in to hear more from Matthew on this episode of the Brilliantly Resilient podcast, and be sure to listen for these additional bits of Brilliance: Whenever you have an awakening, it's almost always easier to roll over and stay asleep. How dare you have the audacity to change your mind? We put a lot of guilt into changing our minds. We spend too little time focusing on our individual values and principals. If you don't have values, what do you own? They are your version of doing the right thing. We spend too little time focusing on our individual values and principals. If you don't have values, what do you own? They are your version of doing the right thing. Replace success with meaning and purpose and recognize that success is malleable. Really successful people define success on their own terms. They deconstruct society's idea of success and create their own. Let's be Brilliantly Resilient together! XO,  Kristin and Mary Fran

Matthew Turner is a British author who wrote his latest book Beyond the Pale while interviewing hundreds of successful Entrepreneurs, Authors, Investors, and Thought Leaders. He also ghostwrites articles and books for other successful entrepreneurs. Beyond the Pale is about a fast-paced millennial that is always switched on, ready to work, and dreams of changing the world. It takes you on a journey of discovery and gives insight into the business world. It looks at one powerfully successful entrepreneur's road to riches and examines the soul beneath the quest for answers by finding out how to ask the right questions. It all began with one of his previous books called, A Successful Mistake. He interviewed 160-odd people and asked them about their biggest failure or their biggest mistake and the lessons they learned from that and how it set the foundations for success, growth, and progression. Successful people understand what success means to them, and usually, when they made a mistake or fail they were following another person's version of success, whether it was a parent, a teacher, a friend, or society's general outlook on what success is. It clicked into place when they took a step back and defined success on their own terms.Matthew always liked the idea of writing a book where he would combine his passions for both fiction and nonfiction into a kind of fable. Books like The Alchemist really inspired him and brought a lot of lessons to life in ways that normal how-to non-fiction never did. This ignited the character of Ferdinand who shares certain traits with him. Matthew is very different from Ferdinand, and Ferdinand is certainly not Matthew, but the journey that Ferdinand goes through over the course of the book is very similar. Questions he has, frustrations, and feelings. Guiding each other along the way to better understand why they are programmed to work harder and longer, is it the fear of missing out or the fear of getting it wrong? The one thing all his books have in common is that it stays within the limits of law or decency and that they are all driven by some kind of pain, curiosity, and question. When he writes, Matthew can have certain out-of-body experiences, and that's how he personally digests all these things as a writer. It's how he is able to better expand and grow as a person. Writing to him is to explore and live it as an external avatar. In this episode:[01:50] Matthew always had that storytelling gene, but writing didn't necessarily come naturallyHe learned through a lot of trial and error, doing the work and listening to editorsMatthew split his time between writing for himself and other people[06:48] Matthew shares what he learned interviewing entrepreneurs for ‘A Successful Mistake'Talking about the biggest failures or mistakes and lessons learned, setting foundations for success, growth, and progression.Successful people understand what success means to them Defining success on their own terms[10:43] Matthew assessed his relationship with the hustle when he wrote ‘Beyond the Pale'A fascinating rabbit hole to find out what your relationship is to your workBeing programmed to work harder and longerLooking into fear of missing out and fear of getting it wrong[13:00] The relationship between success and assessing your relationship with the hustleAlways being at the mercy of the hustle The hustle isn't just working 12-15 hour daysStop comparing yourself to others[15:00] Asking yourself what success means to youSeeing if the definition of

Matthew Turner and Amelie Thomas from Fatal Attractions podcast return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Matthew's choice True Grit. True Grit is the 2010 Coen Brothers Western adapted from the the 1968 novel of the same name. It stars Jeff Bridges as Deputy U.S. Marshal Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn and Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross and co stars Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, and Barry Pepper. The previous film adaptation starred John Wayne, Kim Darby and Glen Campbell. Mattie Ross, a 14-year-old farm girl, collects her father's body after he was shot while on a trip to buy horses by Tom (Brolin) Chaney. She hires a reluctant Rooster Cogburn to track Chaney down. He agrees to take her with him but departs without her. Furious Mattie pursues him riding alone and catches up with Rooster to find him riding with Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Damon). Rooster is left with no choice but to carry on with Mattie in tow. It earned a whopping ten Oscar nominations and failed to win a single one. Despite this, mainly due to Roger Deakins cinematography, True Grit remains a favourite among fans of the Coens and Westerns. True Grit had a mixed response for recommendability due to its western genre, you either like them or you don't! Slightly higher scores for the other categories gives an overall rating of 3.75 The Coen Brothers are currently the top featured Flixwatcher directors (along with Tarantino) and True Grit ranks ahead The Ballad of Buster Scruggs but below No Country for Old Men. In this episode of the Thoughtful Entrepreneur, your host Josh Elledge speaks with Author of https://beyondbook.co/ (Beyond the Pale), http://turndog.co/ (Matthew Turner).    Matthew Turner's latest book Beyond the Pale is a fable that follows the main character Ferdinand Foy on his entrepreneurial and personal growth journey. Matthew explains there is a toxic nature behind hustle culture such as the message gurus send that if you are not working, you are failing. While social media is a good thing, it also has negative effects such as comparing the journey of one person to another while their paths are completely different. It causes insecurity or doubt that could lead to listening to gurus and overworking oneself. It takes the form of a negative feedback loop where if you are failing, you work harder until you reap the negative effects of it. Matthew explains that hustle culture can negatively affect the mind, body, and soul causing physical burnout, mental decline, and drainage of the soul.  While there are negative effects to hustle culture, there are instances where you will have to work more based on the circumstances if the hustle is a means to an end. Matthew explains that there needs to be a deadline to it so it does not spiral out of control causing the consequences of the culture. Working harder is not the only way to achieve success. Matthew explains practices such as working smarter, reevaluating cost, changing business models or overcoming adversity can be better at achieving success compared to being sucked into hustle culture.    Key Points from the Episode: What Beyond the Pale is about Hustle culture How the negative effects of hustle culture affect the mind, body, and soul A personal story of how Matthew avoided being dragged into the culture of hustle Other avenues to achieve success that isn't working harder About Matthew Turner: Matthew Turner (aka: Turndog), is a Storytelling fiend who enjoys a rich cup of black coffee. First and foremost, he is a father, and everything he does is dedicated to his blossoming family. This is what motivates him, so when he talks about WHO he is, it's important to focus on this before everything else. Beyond that, he is a writer. In his eyes, everything is a story. We trust stories. As a species we've evolved the way we have because of stories.  We feel them… deeply. This is his gift to the world. The topics may change and the books may differ, but storytelling remains his constant throughout.        Want to learn more?
