Susan Morrison (Lorne: The Man Who Invented Saturday Night Live, SPY Magazine, The New Yorker) is a journalist and author. Susan joins the Armchair Expert to discuss never wanting to subject her children to a life of moving around, marrying comedy and journalism into irreverant reporting at SPY Magazine, and loving the idea of walking through New York City as time travel. Susan and Dax talk about why humor is just the language we all speak to get by in the world, how Saturday Night Live is a monopoly for comedy, and that she could draw a line from all of Lorne's life experiences straight to the producing skills he would later develop. Susan explains that Lorne is a master of teaching people how to be in a room, why listening for the laugh during dress rehearsal is his secret sauce, and how Lorne's strategic instincts directly contributed to SNL being the longest running entertainment show in history.Follow Armchair Expert on the Wondery App or wherever you get your podcasts. John is joined by Susan Morrison, articles editor of The New Yorker, to discuss “Lorne: The Man Who Invented Saturday Night Live,” her biography of SNL creator and producer Lorne Michaels. Morrison argues that no one has done more to shape modern America's sense of humor than Michaels, an enigmatic Canadian about whom most Americans know nothing; and that while Michaels a figure of enduring obsession among comics, he remains a mystery to them as well. Morrison lays out the singular combination of qualities (tastemaker, talent-spotter, task-master, raconteur, adrenaline junkie) that makes Lorne Lorne—and reveals that, yes, in fact, he was the inspiration for Dr. Evil. LORNE: The Man Who Invented Saturday Night Live is the definitive, years-in-the-making biography of Lorne Michaels by The New Yorker editor Susan Morrison. Through unprecedented access to Michaels and hundreds of interviews with him, his cast members, friends, and family, Morrison reveals the man behind the show-his obsessions, his genius, and the legacy that has impacted generations of comedians and writers, from John Belushi to Tina Fey to Chris Rock. LORNE is the full, wildly entertaining story of a furrier's son from the suburbs of Toronto who would go on to transform comedy. LORNE takes readers behind the scenes of Michaels' relentless, 50-year journey to build and sustain the cultural institution that is Saturday Night Live. Through never-before-shared accounts, Morrison details the fascinating challenges Michaels has faced putting the show together every week -balancing the excesses of creative genius while keeping the team functioning under immense pressure. From his confrontations with NBC executives to his role in cultivating the personalities that have come to define American comedy, readers get an up-close view of Michaels in all his glory and contradictions: he is a commanding, domineering presence; a withholding, enigmatic leader, and a guiding force. As one talent agent told a client who was auditioning: the real star of SNL is Lorne Michaels. How has Michaels done it? Ten years ago, Susan Morrison, articles editor at The New Yorker, rolled up her sleeves to find out. Susan is the author of the newly released title “Lorne: The Man Who Invented Saturday Night Live,” the definitive biography of SNL executive producer Lorne Michaels, and joins The Excerpt to share her insights.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Saturday Night Live has churned out dozens of unforgettable stars — from Bill Murray and Eddie Murphy to Tina Fey and Kristen Wiig — but the biggest force behind the show is executive producer Lorne Michaels. Ahead of SNL’s 50th anniversary, Susan Morrison, author of Lorne: The Man Who Invented Saturday Night Live, talks to Apple News In Conversation host Shumita Basu about Michaels’s unique management style and singular eye for comedy.
This season marks the 50th Anniversary of “Saturday Night Live:” the groundbreaking and iconic show that revolutionized late-night television with its sharp celebrity impersonations, satirical news segments, musical performances and absurd sketches - performed by comedy’s brightest stars and brought to life by the brilliant mind of creator Lorne Michaels. To commemorate this milestone, host Alec Baldwin speaks with writer and producer Steve Higgins, a key figure of the show for three decades, and Susan Morrison, the author of Lorne’s biography “Lorne: The Man Who Invented Saturday Night Live”. Morrison and Higgins reflect on the early days of the show, its relation to the New Yorker Magazine, and what has kept the show a cultural touchstone for so many decades.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Seventy-five years ago, Lillian Ross published “How Do You Like It Now, Gentlemen?” in The New Yorker, her longform profile of Hemingway's 1950 visit to New York City. Ross spent time with Hemingway as he shopped for a coat, visited with Marlene Dietrich, took his son Patrick to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, met with Charles Scribner, and talked enthusiastically about his forthcoming novel, Across the River and into the Trees. This profile has been polarizing since its publication: Did Ross deliver a subtle takedown? Did Hemingway embarrass himself with his odd mannerisms? Should Hemingway never have agreed to it? Should The New Yorker never have published it? Is this, ultimately, the most intimate and penetrating portrait of the later Hemingway ever written? To explore this iconic profile and the journalist who wrote it, we welcome Susan Morrison, who serves as Lillian Ross's literary executor. Morrison is the Articles Editor at The New Yorker and the author of Lorne: The Man Who Invented Saturday Night Live. We hope you enjoy this episode and always remember: “what you win in Boston, you lose in Chicago!”
“Saturday Night Live” turns fifty this year. Profiling its executive producer, Lorne Michaels, the New Yorker editor Susan Morrison sheds light on one of the most important people in show business. Morrison spent years talking to Michaels for her new book, “Lorne: The Man Who Invented Saturday Night Live,” and she includes recordings of those interviews in a conversation with David Remnick. “Lorne was a real student of what I call sort of the hinges between eras,” Morrison says. To keep the show current, Michaels “paid attention to replenishing the casts in a sort of seamless way, so that it would never seem like an old guy trying to do an entertainment for young people.” Plus, one of the show's most notable alumni, Tina Fey—rumored to be a possible successor to Michaels, who is now eighty—reads an excerpt from the magazine's review of the show's first season, back in 1975.
Susan Morrison, owner and principal designer at Creative Exteriors Landscape Design, has created hundreds of gardens in California's East Bay area. Her designs incorporate comfortable outdoor rooms into landscapes of all sizes, from hillside estates to postage-stamp front yards. Susan's home garden features thoughtfully arranged spaces for relaxing and entertaining enfolded in an artful, water-wise plant palette. Focal point plants in key locations draw the eye through the landscape, inviting visitors to explore. In this episode, Susan describes her thought process for siting focal point plants, and shares some of the eye-catching cultivars she uses most often.

Servicemen of an earlier age might find care more rough and ready - Dr Catherine Beck of Copenhagen University looks at mental health in the age of Nelson's navy and why it was thought to be such a pressing issue. In the 18th century electricity was thought to be mysterious and scary, and there was still a whiff of that into the 20th century when savvy female demonstrators were wanted to try and get the highland housewife happy with the power supply of the future. Join us as we travel across the centuries.
It's one of Scotland's almost forgotten campaigns. James Graham the charismatic Marquess of Montrose and his allies occupied Orkney in 1649 - they were planning to invade the Scottish mainland. Would the islanders turn out to fight? Dr Andrew Lind of the Institute for Northern Studies takes Susan Morrison through the battle that came next and its tragic aftermath. On a lighter wartime note, Susan chats to Dr Michelle Moffat, Tutor at Otago University in New Zealand about how Scots took their holidays in World War 2 and how sometimes there was nothing the authorities could do but to gnash their teeth.
