Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"I chose this recording because it was made less than a mile from my house and I also visited the well during lockdown with my family - making the most of some bad times! I tried to add to the feeling of being inside the well, listening to birdsong etc whilst being surrounded by dripping water. I mixed the raw field recording with a half speed version run through the "Treemonster" effect in Bitwig Studio to create this sound. The whistling lead was intended to sound like some kind of bird in the trees (and also features the Treemonster effect). This was inspired by a discussion about how best to use Treemonster (a wild and ridiculous effect)." Alice well, Oxford reimagined by Jarn Wood.

Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

Composition by coxidelic.  "I was inspired by the percussive sound of the Olivetti Calculating Machine, and thought it would be really interesting to use only that sound as the percussion in a track. I took the base sound, and applied a lot of sound distortion and filters to it, and recorded the results.  "There are actually five different Olivetti tracks playing at times concurrently during the composition. I added some ghostly vocals and a warm pad to give the chaos some structure. Everything was then compiled in Bitwig Studio 3 (the original manipulation of the Olivetti sample was done using ReSlice on the iPad)." This is part of the Obsolete Sounds project, the world's biggest collection of disappearing sounds and sounds that have become extinct – remixed and reimagined to create a brand new form of listening. Ahab label owner and artist Microman is back for us all to enjoy a second feast of his own material on the Avenue Red Podcast. Following on from his main episode, we have yet another a live DJ performance entirely composed of his own unreleased material that, combined with the last episode, makes over 6 hours of his wildly innovative and esoteric electronic music. Strictly for the ravers, this one is a maximalist sonic adventure through banging, searingly intense Swedish-style techno and acid. No room for prisoners. "Tip toeing around the house. The hybrid of tech and acid, together with harmonies in club music and old school. This mix is titled "The Ninth Gate" (a nod to the 1999 Roman Polanski film) and is made mostly from elements I produced in 2016, with 130 BPM club sounds all the way. I had a policy of making one tune a day, keeping it raw with the EQ, mastering and mixing... saving that perfectionism for a later date. I built a studio in the countryside with four cats and built in the classical Yamaha NS 10 together with big bass element speakers. I used Bitwig Studio after it was released in 2014. It is like a fast car, undoubtedly the king of DAW programs for creating music. This mix is the sum of two years worth of work, planning and execution. It's like when you're a kid and dream of the ultimate way to making music... and then you do it. In 2003 I got a reference to a thought and a dream, it was like: When you come to the cutting room and they say, "This is good as it is, we don't need to master this, you can release it as it is mixed from the studio!" - Then I got a reference to how long it took to get there, and what I did in-between. Plus, what do I like to listen to when I'm stoned and on something... and then you make it." Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

Flatterers created by Coxidelic (Tracy Cox). "Reading Canto 18, Flatterers, I was curious why Dante placed this seemingly innocuous act in a lower circle of Hell than murder(!). In the canto, Dante sees people he recognises wading through (and covered in) excrement. Virgil, Dante’s guide, points out a courtesan named Thais scratching herself with filthy nails.  "This is where the inspiration started for my composition. A harsh, metallic, scratchy rhythm forms a base that I used to build into a sonic maelstrom, which represents the never-ending chaos of The Inferno. The composition ends with a warning." Created in Bitwig Studio, using Cyborg synth engine, Audio Damage effects, and various random samples. Part of the Inferno project to imagine and compose the sounds of Dante’s Hell, marking the 700th anniversary of The Divine Comedy. To find out more, visit http://www.citiesandmemory.com/inferno

Bitwig has released the Bitwig Studio 2.3 digital audio workstation update. Additions include time-signature markers on the timeline, improved time-stretching for audio, new sounds and device presets for the content library, and more. However, the biggest news for Bitwig Studio 2.3 is the new Phase-4 four-oscillator synthesizer. Phase-4 uses phase manipulation synthesis, similar to the classic Casio CZ phase distortion synthesizers from the 1980s. However, Bitwig’s Phase-4 goes even further with extensive modulation control and a highly visual interface. Bitwig Studio 2.3 is a free update to licensed users with an active upgrade plan, and anyone can try the free demo at Bitwig.com. Two large musical artist communities joined together when Splice acquired Indaba Music. Both companies actively present remixing, production, and songwriting contests, and will collaborate on new projects like the weekly Firestarter series, now available at the Splice.com blog. The Firestarter challenges give producers a creative spark, such as a set of samples, a MIDI pattern, or a project file for them to build off of and share their results. Digital DJs can finally try out Serato DJ Pro 2.0, which is a free upgrade for Serato DJ users. The update adds an offline Practice Mode that lets you prepare tracks with loops and cue point and practice mixes without any hardware connected. The new Performance Pad View shows the DJ decks with cue points laid out in two rows of four, mimicking the layout of many Serato DJ controllers. Serato DJ Pro is now optimized for high-resolution displays and has 64-bit support for greater reliability and unlimited DJ library sizes.
