In this episode of the Real ResQ, we are joined by Brian Dickinson, USN RS, mountaineer and author of the book, The Blind Descent. After six years and two deployments in the Navy, Brian decided to move on to the next chapter of his life. He talks about how the training at the US Navy Rescue Swimmer school set him up for success when it came to tackling the tallest mountain on every continent. With the support of his wife and children, Brian set out to climb mountains that other people only care to read about in books. He walks us through some of his adventurous hikes and then, we talk about the big one, Mt. Everest. On the very top of Mt. Everest, Brian became snow-blind. On top of losing his vision, Brian was alone on his quest and had to figure out how to get safely off of the mountain. Nothing short of a miracle, it took him seven hours of a ‘Blind Descent' to get to safety and thankfully, he lived to tell the tale. The inner strength and motivation that we learn in Rescue Swimmer school is so deeply embedded in us that we carry it for the rest of our lives. Former Navy rescue swimmer and veteran climber Brian Dickinson was roughly 1,000 feet from the summit of Mount Everest – also known as the ‘death zone' – when his guide became ill and had to turn back. Brian kept going and summitted solo, a rare feat – but, then went snow blind. He's about to die. Alone and blind on the top of Everest is one of the most compelling stories in history … and one of the most amazing testimonies to ever be on Brave Men. What happened next was a miracle. Brian says it was the hand of God that sustained him. Low on oxygen, blind, fatigued - relying on his Navy survival training, gut instinct and the presence of the Lord Brian began the deadly descent off Everest – with no one there to help. The book recounting his extraordinary adventure is a global best seller, “Blind Descent”. Considered one of the most dangerous feats ever accomplished in the annals of mountaineering this is a conversation you must share with others. You will be inspired, invigorated and filled with the courage to go after the ‘Everest' in your life. This powerful conversation between Paul Cole, the President of Christian Men's Network, and Brian Dickinson demonstrates that no matter how imposing our circumstances or obstacles – there is no challenge too big for God.

In this one conversation, you'll hear about freeing yourself from parachute lines underwater, evading high voltage wires, water stinging your face like gravel, struggling with a person you're trying to rescue, surviving a temperature of 70 below … and oh yeah, being struck with 24-hour snow blindness on top of Mount Everest and having to get down alone. Brian has always had an itch for adventure. He served in the U.S. Navy as an Air Rescue Swimmer, he has summited 6 of the 7 major peaks in the world including Mount Everest, which, after a solo ascent, he was forced to descend blind due to faulty goggles causing snow blindness. Brian wrote the book “Blind Descent” based off of the events and lessons learned from his time at Everest and is currently training to summit the last of the seven peaks Favorite Success Quote “Get busy living or get busy dying” – Shawshank Redemption Key Points 1. Live as a Doer, Not a Sayer Life is full of sayers. People who say they will lose weight, say they will start saving more than they spend or say they will start that business they have been talking about for years. But they never follow through. They are relegated to lives of menial existences, filled with mediocre intentions and non existent actions. As men who want to be more than average, as men who want to create a life worth living, we must become doers. Don't say you're going to start a business, do it. Don't say you're going to start working out, do it. Let your actions speak so loud that you don't need to say a thing. 2. Evaluate Every Situation As men (especially younger men) we are often prone to haste, because quite frankly, waiting sucks. As guys, if we're going to do something, we don't want to wait, we don't want to weigh different courses of action and examine the possible consequences. And this is when we get into trouble. This is how businesses fail, how sexual mistakes are made, and how dreams are broken. We must learn to pause before taking action and evaluate. Ask ourselves what the consequences of our actions will be and determine the best possible way to proceed. 3. Don't Over-think Things Often just as easy as not thinking at all is over-thinking situations to the point of insanity. If we go out and get a cute girl's number, we will sit for hours trying to think of the perfect line to text her, stewing over every single word instead of sending a simple “hey.” We often obsess over minutiae instead of focusing on the big picture. As Einstein once said “Make things simpler, but not simpler than they need to be.” Don't over-analyze, pause, take stock and execute. 4. Take Life One Step at a Time As men who are driven and ambitious, it is easy to live in the future, focusing on steps that are light years away. We think about the color of the flowers we will have at our wedding, before we even say hello to the girl. We think about how we will invest our income from our next venture, before we even know what that venture will be. We think about pretty much anything, except the thing right in front of us. Like Brian did while descending Everest blind, we need to slow down and take things one step at a time. Face each challenge as it presents itself and worry about tomorrow, tomorrow.
About Brian Dickinson - (http://www.briandickinson.net) As a survival expert and former US Navy Air Rescue Swimmer, Brian Dickinson, delivers one of the most powerful experiences you will ever hear. His story exemplifies what it takes to face adversity and overcome impossible obstacles, leaving audiences inspired to conquer their greatest fears. In 2011, Brian soloed the summit of Mount Everest, but then went completely snowblind on the descent. Hand over hand he made his way down blind and alone. What should have taken 3 hours to reach high camp, ended up taking him 7 hours. Brian took a major fall down the south summit and eventually ran out of supplemental oxygen, but through determined faith and focus he survived. Brian's experience has been shared across the world. He's been featured on CNN, NBC, ABC, Fox News, Anderson Cooper, GMA, Success Magazine, Huffington Post and countless other news agencies. Several reenactments have been filmed, including CBN, NBC and the Weather Channel. Brian's survival story is also due to release in an upcoming movie series produced by KingdomWorks Studios. Brian authored the book, Blind Descent, published by Tyndale House Publishers, which recounts his story on Everest. Blind Descent has been on the Amazon best sellers list multiple times and continues to be one of the top selling Everest survival books.
I don't know if I've ever met someone who lives more in the moment than Brian Dickinson, and he shares his incredible story in today's interview. He is an ex-Navy rescue swimmer, a world-class mountain climber and the author of Blind Descent, the inspiring story about how he summited Mount Everest – alone – and overcame descending the mountain blind. Brian is still learning the ability to slow down and live in the moment, gathering the courage to be content. Brian's climbs help him gain perspective on the world off of the mountain, because he experiences how slowly time can feel. It can be dangerous to start climbing alone. “Not even climbing, but everything. If you can latch onto somebody who has a clue, has made the mistakes, you're going to learn a ton.” There's so much in your control, if you know how to control it. Control, on the mountain and in your business, comes down to preparation. “The success is creating a lifestyle of change,” and then you will always be prepared for that next climb or business endeavor. I've described preparation as the bridge between expectation and reality. Sometimes, that bridge can collapse, and things will go south in spite of your preparation – like when you start to develop snow blindness at the highest point on Earth. In these situations, success can come down to willpower. Sometimes willpower means moving forward, using your training, without overthinking the situation. Motivation can pull us through the impossible, in our lives and in our businesses. Brian used his family to help him descend Mount Everest and overcome his instinct to panic. Use your motivation to focus on breaking a bad experience down to small successes, keeping a map in your mind of where you are going. For now, Brian is taking what he learned and focusing on having the courage to be content. There's no shortage of adventures in this world, and he's going to go on the next few with his family. We are put in situations for a reason. Usually it's not at the top of Mount Everest, but it's always so that we can share something of value with other people, and maybe save someone's life, career or marriage through our stories. SOME QUESTIONS I ASK: How did Brian learn the ability to slow down and live in the moment? How did Brian's military training aid him in transitioning towards entrepreneurship and the tech industry? How important has mentorship been to Brian in his climbing endeavors? What are Brian's thoughts on preparation and willpower? When Brian was descending Mount Everest and started going blind, how did he not give in to the harsh conditions? How did Brian overcome panic in an unpredictable situation? IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL LEARN: An incredible story about human strength and willpower How preparation is a lifestyle as much as an activity Why it is courageous to be content How to use motivation to overcome the worst situations Plus much more… DON'T STOP HERE… Learn more about Brian: Website | Twitter | YouTube | https://www.facebook.com/briancdickinson (Facebook) | Instagram ADDITIONAL RESOURCES: Blind Descent: Surviving Alone and Blind on Mount Everest by Brian Dickinson

Get ready for an inspiring story of faith and determination! Coach Cafe welcomes Brian Dickinson, author of Blind Descent: Surving Alone and Blind on Mount Everest. Roughly 1,000 feet from the summit of Mount Everest – also known as “the death zone”--Brian's Sherpa guide was forced to turn back after falling ill. Brian had to decide whether to push forward alone to the summit of Mt. Everest or turn back. After carefully weighing his options, Dickinson decided to continue up alone. Just four hours later, Dickinson solo summited the highest peak in the world. As Brian prepared to descend back down the mountain's 29,035 feet, his vision suddenly became blurry, his eyes started to burn, and within seconds he was rendered almost completely blind. Alone at the top of the world, low on oxygen, and stricken with snow blindness Brian was forced to inch his way back down the mountain relying only on his Navy survival training, his gut instinct, and most importantly, his faith.
