After graduating from Stanford, Brian's first career was as a swimming coach. He received the prestigious United States Swimming National Coaching Excellence Award, in recognition of his team's Top 10 National Performance. After gaining his MBA from UCLA, he subsequently rose rapidly to become the VP of Performance Planning for a major transportation company, helping to turn the business around, and quadrupling revenues in record time. He has written 16 books, including bestsellers like Beyond Success! and It's Time for Joy! In today's episode, Brian shares his personal story of learning to be fully present with his family, a lesson that profoundly impacted his professional life and leadership approach. We explore the leadership principles of legendary coaches John Wooden and Pat Summitt, emphasizing humility, presence, and the avoidance of blame. Brian also reflects on modern leaders who embody these values, the importance of storytelling in leadership, and the influence of characters like Ted Lasso in promoting these timeless principles. Questions and Topics: You mentioned your daughters asking if you loved your phone more than them. How did that moment transform your approach to being present? Can you explain how being fully present affects both personal and professional life? Could you share a story about how presence impacted your professional relationships, like with your director of operations? What can we learn from the leadership styles of John Wooden and Pat Summitt? How did you first get connected with John Wooden? Can humility and confidence coexist in leadership? Are there current coaches or leaders you admire who exemplify the principles of Wooden and Summitt? What are your thoughts on Ted Lasso as a character and how he connects to Wooden and Summitt's coaching styles? How can leaders teach humility without relying on humbling experiences? Why do you think blame is so destructive in teams, and how can leaders avoid it? How does your book ‘Lessons from the Legends' apply to non-sports contexts like business or parenting?

Danny White faces a big decision – his biggest decision, in fact, since he hired Josh Heupel in 2021. White is conducting a Lady Vols coaching search that will reshape the direction of the program. Kellie Harper maintained the program as an NCAA Tournament regular, but she repeatedly peaked in the Sweet 16, and the Lady Vols were eliminated in the second round this year. Recruiting momentum had stalled. White acted boldly by firing a coach who played for Summitt and who won 20 games this season. Now, he must be bold in his quest to hire just the fourth coach in program history. The last two Lady Vols coaches came from the Pat Summitt tree. Will White look outside the Lady Vols family for this hire? That seems likely. On today's episode, hosts Blake Toppmeyer, Cora Hall and John Adams weigh in on the Lady Vols search. First, they address the candidacy of Duke's Kara Lawson. Verdict: Lawson should not be viewed as the frontrunner. Then, each offers two swing-for-the-fences candidates, plus a fallback option. Summitt Hogue and Joe Lynch discuss what kills warehousing companies. Summitt is the founder of Growe, a Dallas-based commercial real estate firm focused exclusively on serving the various needs of third-party logistics companies across the United States. About Summitt Hogue Summitt is the founder of Growe, a Dallas-based commercial real estate firm focused exclusively on serving the various needs of third-party logistics companies across the United States. After beginning his career in commercial real estate, Summitt quickly identified the unique and under-served challenges faced by 3PLs. Growe was formed on a foundational appreciation for the importance of speed, flexibility, creativity, and timing on a 3PL's real-estate strategy and overall profitability. This customized approach and ingrained understanding of the 3PL business model has led Summitt & the Growe team to expand beyond just real-estate services. Growe has evolved into a diverse network that connects numerous 3PLs, brands, manufacturers, and vendors in every market across the country. This multi-faceted approach has allowed Growe to fully support all aspects of its customers' growth initiatives by simultaneously providing real-time market intelligence, real-estate services, vendor connections, and customer introductions - resulting in full warehouses & well over $100 million in CRE transactions in the last 5 years alone. Summitt grew up working on a family farm/vineyard in West Texas and went on to play division I football at Texas Tech University. He now resides in Dallas where he enjoys spending time with his wife, Miranda, and chasing around their daughter, Falynn. About Growe Growe is a commercial real estate firm that specializes in representing 3PL (third-party logistics) companies in managing their real estate portfolios across North America. The company's core focus is to facilitate growth for 3PLs by helping them find new warehouses and fill the space as they expand across the country. Growe works specifically with growth-minded 3PLs, figuring out what they specialize in and bringing them brands that fit their needs, resulting in a win/win situation for both the 3PL and the brand. The company provides tenant representation and lease negotiation services specifically to those growth-minded 3PLs and helps them navigate the process of expanding in their existing market, managing a renewal, or expanding into a new market on the other side of the country. Growe has experience in almost every market across the United States and has local partners in every market to ensure that they have very specific submarket knowledge and understanding. The company ensures that their 3PLs get the most cost-effective and flexible deal in the market, which is important in the 3PL business. Key Takeaways: What Kills Warehousing Companies Summitt Hogue is the founder of Growe, a Dallas-based commercial real estate firm focused exclusively on serving the various needs of third-party logistics companies across the United States. In the podcast interview, Summitt and Joe discus what kills warehousing companies. Summitt and his team have direct experience working with 3PLs in the USA and are familiar with the challenges that can negatively impact warehousing companies. Labor problems are a key issue, including high turnover rates, cultural challenges, low productivity, and high labor costs. Poor technology is another major challenge that can limit productivity and hinder a company's ability to compete effectively. Bad customer fit can be costly for warehousing companies, as the wrong customers may require extra resources, lack technological expertise, and cost more to support. Customer acquisition costs can also be a significant challenge, particularly in a competitive market. Growth, especially in terms of real estate, can be a complex issue for warehousing companies and requires careful planning and management. Today's episode is the second of a few episodes in which I will be talking about quotes that I took from my gift book for graduating athletes called, "Inspiration for the Graduate." As it is graduation season right now, I thought it would be appropriate to highlight some of the quotes in that book. I wrote the book, so I could give it to my graduating seniors. I soon had other coaches asking me how they could get it, so I published it, and it has been my bestselling book by far.I am running a special on "Inspiration of the Graduate" for the month of May. Usually, it retails for $7.95, and the 10-pack is $70.00. However, right now, you can get individual copies of it for just $6.95 and the 10-pack for $65.00. Go to the Shop page of the SlamDunk Success site to order it.In today's episode, I actually talk about two quotes, both of them about the team theme in the book called, "Discipline." The quotes are by two of the all-time great college basketball coaches - Bobby Knight and Pat Summitt. I think they get at the heart of what discipline truly is and why it is so important for success.
Welcome again to the Bill Bradley Collective, where it is part two of this week's double drop: a conversation profiling legendary Tennessee women's college basketball coach Pat Summitt. Over a career spanning nearly four decades, the late Summitt set the record book for all to try and catch. Eight national titles, eighteen Final Four appearances, 1,000+ wins and an Olympic gold medal are among her many notable accomplishments, but her legacy goes far beyond the stat sheet and the hardware. Summitt's career and eventual ascension of her and the Lady Vols' program coincide with the rise and growth of the sport, itself. The greatest and highest profile rivalry the sport has ever seen, matching Tennessee and UConn, has attracted more eyes to the women's game than any other and is in large part responsible for the elevated profile the sport maintains today, and Summitt and Huskies coach Geno Auriemma were the catalysts. Her place among the greatest coaches in college basketball history; the fight with early-onset Alzheimer's disease that ended her career and took her life far prematurely; and the brief but sordid coaching career of son Tyler are all also considered in this week's profile of the late coach Pat Summitt on the Bill Bradley Collective.
