For the 2022 Earth Overshoot Day special of PGAP, we observe the occasion by welcoming Brian Czech, founder of the Centre for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy (CASSE). Biologist Paul Ehrlich reflects on the 1972 MIT study, The Limits to Growth, on its 50th anniversary – including the fact that it has been refuted (poorly), ignored, and confirmed. The study was done by a team of scientists commissioned by the Club of Rome to develop a computer model to simulate the interaction of earth and human systems. It revealed that continuation of the then-current trends in population, industrialization, resource use and pollution would result in overshooting the carrying capacity of the Earth and result in a general collapse at some point in the first half of the 21st century. The study results were published in the 1972 book, The Limits to Growth, which holds the record as the top-selling environmental book. The book was authored by four system dynamics scientists (Donella Meadows, Dennis Meadows, Jørgen Randers, and William Behrens III). Steady staters have something to say about biodiversity conservation. Brian Czech is a case in point, if not in spades. In this week's episode, Brian Czech and Rick Tibbetts (producer of The Steady Stater) provide candid and cogent reactions to the 2020 presidential election from the steady stater point of view. The two CASSE colleagues discuss the current state of the election, why 68 million Americans voted for Trump, and what a Biden victory might mean for steady staters.

There is so much to say about the Trophic Theory of Money that we had to break the topic down into two parts! In this episode, Brian Czech fills in the gaps from last week's discussion of agricultural surpluses and ancient currencies. He then shifts the conversation to today by identifying the implications of the trophic theory of money for modern economic policy.

There is no theory in economics more down to Earth than the trophic theory of money (TTOM). Born out of an epiphany in ecological economics by Brian Czech, the TTOM offers the clearest explanation to the ecosystem we call “the economy” and the origins of money. To be a steady stater is to be against GDP growth. That’s not the same as being against GDP as a metric. GDP is an invaluable tool for measuring environmental impact and mustn't be discarded, as some in the degrowth camp suggest. What should we do in response to the key messages of the 2020 documentary, Planet of the Humans? This is a continuation of the discussion begun in part one of the webinar, Planet of the Humans: a Sequel. In part 2, our panel explores actions we can take now – to avoid terminating  human civilization. What should we do in response to the key messages of the 2020 documentary, Planet of the Humans? This is a continuation of the discussion begun in part one of the webinar, Planet of the Humans: a Sequel. In part 2, our panel identifies, considers and recommends actions we can take now – to avoid terminating or greatly harming human civilization. Both parts of the webinar addressed the roles of overpopulation, overconsumption and economic growth in the most serious environmental crises we face. The webinar was co-hosted by GrowthBusters and World Population Balance. Coronavirus has brought the economies of the world to a grinding halt. The world is (almost) universally mourning the recession – almost. There is a small, but rising chorus of hopeful speculation that the increasingly apparent deficiencies of our growth-obsessed economic system make it ripe for this crisis to shock it onto a more sustainable path. We invited Brian Czech, executive director of the Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy (CASSE) to explain how this recession is “setting up a brighter future for the generations to come.” Our “suicidal obsession with economic growth has caused us to make some bad deals. What happens at the end of the recession is what really matters. Episode 10: Brian Czech is the executive director of the Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy (CASSE). Czech served as a conservation biologist in the headquarters of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from 1999-2017 and as a visiting professor of natural resources economics with Virginia Tech through most of that period. He is the author of three books: Supply Shock, Shoveling Fuel for a Runaway Train, and The Endangered Species Act: History, Conservation Biology, and Public Policy. He has published over 50 academic journal articles in more than 20 peer-reviewed journals. Czech is a frequent speaker, commentator, and a regular contributor to the Steady State Herald, CASSE's blog. He has a B.S. from the University of Wisconsin, an M.S. from the University of Washington, and a Ph.D. from the University of Arizona. Economic growth is the number one public policy goal around the world, yet our pursuit of growth is “pulling out the rug from our own kids’ and grandkids’ future,” according to Brian Czech, founder and president of the Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy. He wants us to understand economic growth is physically impossible to sustain on a finite planet, it’s depleting nonrenewable natural resources and degrading or eliminating crucial habitat for other species. Czech authored Shoveling Fuel for a Runaway Train in response to his analysis of the conflict between economic growth and sound environmental stewardship. The conservation biologist taught ecological economics for over a decade at Virginia Tech, and in 2013 penned Supply Shock: Economic Growth at the Crossroads and the Steady State Solution.
