Send us a textThe US Fish and Wildlife Service decided to "manage" barred owls by shooting half a million of them over the next three decades. Jason, Rob, and Asher (along with the postal workers at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry) are upset about this plan for addressing the predicament of invasive species. Surely there's a finer tool than a double-barreled shotgun for conserving ecosystems and protecting the species that inhabit them.Warning: This podcast occasionally uses spicy language.Sources/Links/Notes:Bill Lucia, "Plan Finalized to Kill Thousands of Barred Owls around Northwest," Washington State Standard, August 28, 2024.U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Final Barred Owl Management Strategy, August 2024."Killing barred owls to save northern spotted owls: Rethinking American wildlife conservation," On Point, WBUR, 9/5/2024.Avram Hiller, Jay Odenbaugh, and Yasha Rohwer, "A Dystopian Effort Is Underway in the Pacific Northwest to Pick Ecological Winners and Losers," New York Times, August 8, 2024.Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, "Northern Pikeminnow Sport Reward Program."Robert Dietz and Brian Czech, "Conservation Deficits for the Continental United States: an Ecosystem Gap Analysis," Conservation Biology, August 16, 2005.Tom Murphy, "Metastatic Modernity #12: Human Supremacy," Metastatic Modernity Video Series, August 9, 2024.Support the show
Brian Czech, founder of the Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy, is an ecological economist and former conservation biologist. Brian joined me just after returning from COP15 and, thankfully, says the fallacy of economic growth is finally being discussed at these critical conferences. On the episode, Brian explains the relationship between economics and the planet's biosphere before introducing steady state economics, an economic model which prioritises stability and the protection of planetary boundaries. He also describes his time working for the US government, and walks us through the trophic theory which dismantles any techno-utopian argument that we can innovate our way out of the climate crisis and continue to enjoy growth for growth's sake.Planet: Critical investigates why the world is in crisis—and what to do about it.© Rachel Donald Get full access to Planet: Critical at www.planetcritical.com/subscribe

For the 2022 Earth Overshoot Day special of PGAP, we observe the occasion by welcoming Brian Czech, founder of the Centre for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy (CASSE). As a figurehead of the Degrowth movement, Brian makes a perfect voice of reason for this year's Earth Overshoot Day, which falls on July 28th. In this episode, Brian reflects on the formation and history of CASSE with host Michael Bayliss and how the Steady State and Degrowth movements intersect. He shares his decades of experience and fascinating anecdotes to draw the point home that a steady state revolution is necessary to stop the endless growth paradigm from bringing earth overshoot day all the way to January 01st. Brian Czech has a Ph.D. in renewable natural resources. He is the founding President of CASSE (https://steadystate.org/), and a prolific author. His scientific articles have appeared in dozens of peer-reviewed journals, dealing primarily with ecological and economic sustainability issues. His books include Supply Shock: Economic Growth at the Crossroads, released in May 2013, Shoveling Fuel for a Runaway Train, which calls for an end to uneconomic growth, and The Endangered Species Act: History, Conservation Biology, and Public Policy. Brian is also an Interdisciplinary Biologist in the national office of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, where he received a 2010 Star Award for outstanding performance. He has played a leading role in engaging the environmental sciences and natural resources professions in ecological economics and macroeconomic policy dialog. Check out Earth Overshoot Day (https://www.overshootday.org/)and Global Footprint Network (https://www.footprintnetwork.org/) for a rundown on Earth Overshoot Day. According to their press release (https://www.overshootday.org/newsroom/press-release-june-2022-english/) for Earth Overshoot Day 2022: “Each year, Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity has used all the biological resources that Earth regenerates during the entire year. Humanity currently uses 75% more than what the planet's ecosystems can regenerate—or “1.75 Earths.” From Earth Overshoot Day until the end of the year, humanity operates on ecological deficit spending.” Further: “Earth Overshoot Day 2022 lands on July 28, earlier than last year. Over 50 years of global overshoot have led to a world where aggravated drought and food insecurity are compounded by unseasonably warm temperatures. As the date indicates, humanity continues to widen its annual ecological deficit two years after the pandemic-induced resource-use reductions exceptionally pushed the date back temporarily by 24 days.” As you can see, EOD2022 is an absolute riot! Biologist Paul Ehrlich reflects on the 1972 MIT study, The Limits to Growth, on its 50th anniversary – including the fact that it has been refuted (poorly), ignored, and confirmed. The study was done by a team of scientists commissioned by the Club of Rome to develop a computer model to simulate the interaction of earth and human systems. It revealed that continuation of the then-current trends in population, industrialization, resource use and pollution would result in overshooting the carrying capacity of the Earth and result in a general collapse at some point in the first half of the 21st century. The study results were published in the 1972 book, The Limits to Growth, which holds the record as the top-selling environmental book. The book was authored by four system dynamics scientists (Donella Meadows, Dennis Meadows, Jørgen Randers, and William Behrens III). Gaya Herrington, whose 2020 analysis of The Limits to Growth was published in Yale's Journal of Industrial Ecology, described the study and book aptly: “the authors identified society's relentless pursuit of growth not as the solution to, but the cause of, so many of the environmental and social crises that plague humanity still today.” “....what is it about Homo sapiens that leads us to the limits as a moth to a flame. Can we?” – Brian Czech, Executive Director of the Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy Read The Limits to Growth: Online Read, but includes scans of pages and downloadable charts https://collections.dartmouth.edu/teitexts/meadows/diplomatic/meadows_ltg-diplomatic.html High Quality Scan https://collections.dartmouth.edu/content/deliver/inline/meadows/pdf/meadows_ltg-001.pdf Mentioned in Our Discussion of The Limits to Growth: Limits to Growth 50th Anniversary Events - on Club of Rome website https://www.clubofrome.org/ltg50-events/ UN Event June 2-3: Stockholm+50: a healthy planet for the prosperity of all – our responsibility, our opportunity View live on the web: https://www.stockholm50.global/events/programme The Stockholm+50 Conference: What You Need to Know and Why It Matters https://unfoundation.org/blog/post/the-stockholm50-conference-what-you-need-to-know-and-why-it-matters/ Take this survey before June 2: https://www.stockholm50.global/state-planet-global-public-survey June 10 seminar: Limits to Growth +50: Can Economies Keep Growing Indefinitely on a Finite Planet? In this episode we talk with Brian Czech, Executive Director for the Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy, about what a steady state economy means, where and whether it overlaps with circular economy thinking, and what its implementation might mean for the food system as a whole.
In our first podcast episode of the year, Brian Czech takes a moment to remember some of the steady staters who left us in 2021: David Schindler, Valerius Geist, Mason Gaffney, Dick Lamm, Thomas Lovejoy, E.O. Wilson, and Lisa Vandemark. Brian lists their achievements, shares personal encounters, and reflects on life, death, and limits. Our conversation with Dick Lamm: The Almost Steady-State President (October 2020)
The balance of nature. Balancing resources among nations. Balancing politics with the raw facts of overpopulation. Working in the population education field is a constant balancing act, and David Paxson has been on the tightrope ever since establishing World Population Balance in 1991. Listen to him discuss his voluminous insights with Brian Czech in this week’s episode of The Steady Stater.
Despite the incredible successes in conservation, overall, something isn't working. We are losing ground. What are the missing links? Delving deeply into this question, we keep butting up against the fundamental conflicts between economic growth and wildlife conservation. With my guest Brian Czech, we tackle this subject head-on., Brian documented the causes of species endangerment for US Fish and Wildlife Services only to have his findings squelched as a taboo subject in any conversation in government where politicians and officials are committed to growth as a policy goal, but also in NGOs and conservation groups. Brian retired from USFW and founded the Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy (CASSE) and published a candid and open letter, “Farewell to FWS – Goodbye to Gag Orders” In today's full world economy” we must instill the public economic policy makers toward a full tilt transition from unsustainable growth to a steady state economy. Steady staters have something to say about biodiversity conservation. Brian Czech is a case in point, if not in spades. In this episode, Czech presents a “unified theory” of biodiversity conservation encompassing aspects of conservation biology, evolutionary ecology, ecological economics, and political science. Even the philosophy of science is not off limits. (Don’t miss the “epistemological kicker” on non-human knowledge).
On Wednesday, January 6, 2021, a group of far-right radicals stormed the U.S. Capitol to prevent the congressional certification of Joseph R. Biden as president. At first glance, the insurrection had nothing to do with GDP growth, right? Yet further reflection leads us to connect some overlooked dots. A Trump-like obsession with growth is part of a broader mentality that too readily incorporates reckless, selfish, and destructive behavior and politics. Brian Czech explains the connections in this first special episode of The Steady Stater.Music citation:Long Road Ahead by Kevin MacLeodLink: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/3996-long-road-aheadLicense: https://filmmusic.io/standard-license
2020 has been a trying year for us all. A global pandemic, racial reckoning, and presidential election barely scratch the tumultuous surface. Thankfully, 2020 didn’t only deliver duds. There is much to be thankful for! In this episode, Brian Czech gives an uplifting rundown of CASSE projects, initiatives, and organizational growth from the past year. Though we cannot undo the horrors and hardships that many suffered in 2020, we hope that this episode gives you a glimmer of hope for a brighter, fully sustainable future. From all of us at CASSE, happy holidays and may 2021 be a joyous, steady-statish new year!
The time has come to reject the fuzzy notions that "everything will be okay" while populations grow and economies expand. Humankind is headed for misery and collapse if we fail to take unprecedented action to stabilize our footprint. Unfortunately, our brains didn’t evolve to deal with the 21st century. Frankly we need some “uncommon sense.” In this episode, Brian Czech and Rick Tibbetts discuss a book that provides just that — Uncommon Sense: Shortcomings of the Human Mind for Handling Big-Picture, Long-Term Challenges by Peter Seidel.
About Brian Czech Brian Czech is the founding president of the Center For The Advancement Of The Steady State Economy (CASSE). Czech served as the first conservation biologist in the history of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from 1999-2017, and concurrently as a visiting professor of natural resource economics in Virginia Tech’s National Capitol […] The post Episode 64: Adopting A Steady State Economy To Protect Wild Nature With Brian Czech appeared first on Rewilding.
In this week's episode, Brian Czech and Rick Tibbetts (producer of The Steady Stater) provide candid and cogent reactions to the 2020 presidential election from the steady stater point of view. The two CASSE colleagues discuss the current state of the election, why 68 million Americans voted for Trump, and what a Biden victory might mean for steady staters.
There is so much to say about the Trophic Theory of Money that we had to break the topic down into two parts! In this episode, Brian Czech fills in the gaps from last week's discussion of agricultural surpluses and ancient currencies. He then shifts the conversation to today by identifying the implications of the trophic theory of money for modern economic policy.
There is no theory in economics more down to Earth than the trophic theory of money (TTOM). Born out of an epiphany in ecological economics by Brian Czech, the TTOM offers the clearest explanation to the ecosystem we call “the economy” and the origins of money. In this episode, we examine this theory through the lens of ancient cultures and the food chains of nature.
Overshoot Day — the day when our resource consumption exceeds planetary capacity — fell on August 22 this year. In other words, we’re living on borrowed time and starting to pay the price with climate change, sea-level rise, and biodiversity loss. The date is calculated by the Global Footprint Network (GFN), a key ally in advancing the steady state economy. In this episode of The Steady Stater, Brian Czech interviews his first guest on the podcast, GFN CEO Laurel Hanscom.
To be a steady stater is to be against GDP growth. That’s not the same as being against GDP as a metric. GDP is an invaluable tool for measuring environmental impact and mustn't be discarded, as some in the degrowth camp suggest. In this episode, host Brian Czech examines the merits of monitoring GDP, and the need to view GDP growth in the 21st century as alarming, not encouraging.
Discussions of the economy are fraught with misleading and manipulative terminology, often designed to improve corporate reputations, stimulate consumption, and grow the GDP. This week, host Brian Czech exposes a dozen linguistic tricks and rhetorical ploys. While the style of this episode is lighthearted and sardonic, the outcome will be more critical thinking about economic growth.
This episode is the second of what will be an ongoing series on Steady State Economics. In my mind, this approach to the economy provides the best option moving forward in light of the environmental crises developing due to approaches to the economy focused upon economic growth. One of the things that appeals to me about this approach is that it is compatible with both capitalism and socialism, so that it is adaptable and adoptable to most of the worlds existing economies. A country does not have to switch to capitalism or socialism or deal with the struggle that would be the result of debating and seeking such a switch. My guest for this episode is Dr. Brian Czech. Brian is the founder and present Executive Director of Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy (CASSE). Brian’s books are listed below, but the one this interview is based upon is his Supply Shock: Economic Growth at the Crossroads and the Steady State Solution. Although Brian does not get beyond the understanding of those of us who are not economists, he provides us with a thorough and excellent understanding of the development of growth economies and why those approaches to the economy not only are not sustainable, but are the cause of the crises we are beginning to experience. Such an understanding is necessary to recognize why a Steady State Economy is an essential solution for our future. In addition to Supply Shock, Brian’s other works include: The Endangered Species Act: History, Conservation, Biology, and Public Policy Shoveling Fuel for a Runaway Train: Errant Economists, Shameful Spenders, and a Plan to Stop Them All Best of the Daly News: Selected Essays from the Leading Blog in Steady State Economics, 2010-2018 The music for this episode is from a clip of a song called 'Father Let Your Kingdom Come' which is found on The Porter's Gate Worship Project Work Songs album and is used by permission by The Porter's Gate Worship Project. You can learn more about the album and the Worship Project at theportersgate.com.
There's a lot of questions surrounding the steady state economy, principal among them being "what is it?" We decided to answer this most fundamental question in this week's episode of The Steady Stater. As one of the few experts on the subject, host Brian Czech provides a readily understandable introduction to what the steady state economy is, what it entails, the structure of the real economy, and the fallacies associated with the so-called "information economy."
Welcome to the Steady Stater! A podcast produced by the Center for the Advancement of the Steady State EconomyI'm Brian Czech. In this inaugural episode, I will be introducing myself, the details of the show, and some of the topics I will be discussing in future episodes. The Steady Stater is the only podcast dedicated to advancing the Steady State Economy, which is an economic philosophy seeking save our planet by curbing overconsumption, overpopulation, and halting GDP growth. Now more than ever is the time to speak up, so that's exactly what we're doing. We hope you enjoy listening and support our cause by signing the position on our website calling for a Steady State Economy: https://steadystate.org/act/sign-the-position/Thanks for listening, and I'll see you next week!

Our mission is to chart a path for human civilization that – rather than causing greater misery – enables good lives on a healthy planet. We advocate and support a smaller, truly sustainable human population – through dramatic and voluntary reduction in birth rates. We envision a world where no one suffers in dire poverty and misery for lack of enough food, water, and other basic needs. Coronavirus has brought the economies of the world to a grinding halt. The world is (almost) universally mourning the recession – almost. There is a small, but rising chorus of hopeful speculation that the increasingly apparent deficiencies of our growth-obsessed economic system make it ripe for this crisis to shock it onto a more sustainable path. We invited Brian Czech, executive director of the Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy (CASSE) to explain how this recession is “setting up a brighter future for the generations to come.” Our “suicidal obsession with economic growth has caused us to make some bad deals. What happens at the end of the recession is what really matters. Have we learned enough about the shortcomings of GDP growth on a full planet to NOT climb right back on that horse? Despite the incredible successes in conservation, overall, something isn't working. We are losing ground. What are the missing links? Delving deeply into this question, we keep butting up against the fundamental conflicts between economic growth and wildlife conservation. With my guest Brian Czech, we tackle this subject head-on., Brian documented the causes of species endangerment for US Fish and Wildlife Services only to have his findings squelched as a taboo subject in any conversation in government where politicians and officials are committed to growth as a policy goal, but also in NGOs and conservation groups. As a result, Brian retired from USFW and founded the Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy (CASSE) and published a candid and open letter, “Farewell to FWS – Goodbye to Gag Orders”. In today's full world economy”, we must instill the public and economic policy makers toward a full tilt transition from unsustainable growth to a steady state economy.

How can policymakers be persuaded to abandon the most widespread public policy goal on Earth? In our last episode, Brian Czech explained that economic growth cannot be sustained perpetually on a finite planet. This episode continues that conversation with the conservation biologist and economics expert. Here, he explains why pro-growth economists proliferate, and offers his prescription for making the shift to a steady state economy. Brian Czech is founder and president of the Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy, and author of Shoveling Fuel for a Runaway Train and Supply Shock: Economic Growth at the Crossroads and the Steady State Solution. Economic growth is the number one public policy goal around the world, yet our pursuit of growth is “pulling out the rug from our own kids’ and grandkids’ future,” according to Brian Czech, founder and president of the Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy. He wants us to understand economic growth is physically impossible to sustain on a finite planet, it’s depleting nonrenewable natural resources and degrading or eliminating crucial habitat for other species. Czech authored Shoveling Fuel for a Runaway Train in response to his analysis of the conflict between economic growth and sound environmental stewardship. The conservation biologist taught ecological economics for over a decade at Virginia Tech, and in 2013 penned Supply Shock: Economic Growth at the Crossroads and the Steady State Solution. In part one of a two-part conversation (recorded in 2007 but just as relevant today), Brian explains our obsession with GDP growth, its failure to eliminate poverty and increase happiness, and why it’s failings are not commonly acknowledged.
