He is a former Wexford hurling captain and a host on Newstalk's flagship sports programme 'Off the Ball'. With Wild Irish Retreats he is part of a team that is focused on the rejuvenation of the Irish language in relation to nature reconnection. With Nature of Man he runs retreats and online programmes with men that creates a space for them to do their own internal spiritual work. He also takes teams/groups of all kinds to the woods for overnight camps that focus on connection; to self, teammate and place. In this enlivening conversation, Diarmuid shares with us his unfolding path of purpose. We explore experiences of being truly listened to, of generosity of spirit, receiving love and developing self-acceptance. All throughout the conversation Diarmuid is pointing to a greater connection with the moment, people, and nature, and we note the significance of consciously leaving space for more aliveness and wildness in our lives. This is a selection of highlights from episode #203 of The 80,000 Hours Podcast. These aren't necessarily the most important, or even most entertaining parts of the interview — and if you enjoy this, we strongly recommend checking out the full episode:Peter Godfrey-Smith on interfering with wild nature, accepting death, and the origin of complex civilisationAnd if you're finding these highlights episodes valuable, please let us know by emailing podcast@80000hours.org.Highlights:Luisa's intro (00:00:00)Thinking about death (00:00:24)Uploads of ourselves (00:05:32)Against intervening in wild nature (00:12:36)Eliminating the worst experiences in wild nature (00:16:15)To be human or wild animal? "In the human case, it would be mistaken to give a kind of hour-by-hour accounting. You know, 'I had +4 level of experience for this hour, then I had -2 for the next hour, and then I had -1' — and you sort of sum to try to work out the total… And I came to think that something like that will be applicable in some of the animal cases as well… There are achievements, there are experiences, there are things that can be done in the face of difficulty that might be seen as having the same kind of redemptive role, as casting into a different light the difficult events that led up to it."The example I use is watching some birds successfully raising some young, fighting off a couple of rather aggressive parrots of another species that wanted to fight them, prevailing against difficult odds — and doing so in a way that was so wholly successful. It seemed to me that if you wanted to do an accounting of how things had gone for those birds, you would not want to do the naive thing of just counting up difficult and less-difficult hours. There's something special about what's achieved at the end of that process." —Peter Godfrey-SmithIn today's episode, host Luisa Rodriguez speaks to Peter Godfrey-Smith — bestselling author and science philosopher — about his new book, Living on Earth: Forests, Corals, Consciousness, and the Making of the World.Links to learn more, highlights, and full transcript. They cover:Why octopuses and dolphins haven't developed complex civilisation despite their intelligence. How the role of culture has been crucial in enabling human technological progress. Why Peter thinks the evolutionary transition from sea to land was key to enabling human-like intelligence — and why we should expect to see that in extraterrestrial life too.Whether Peter thinks wild animals' lives are, on balance, good or bad, and when, if ever, we should intervene in their lives.Whether we can and should avoid death by uploading human minds. And plenty more.Chapters:Cold open (00:00:00)Luisa's intro (00:00:57)The interview begins (00:02:12)Wild animal suffering and rewilding (00:04:09)Thinking about death (00:32:50)Uploads of ourselves (00:38:04)Culture and how minds make things happen (00:54:05)Challenges for water-based animals (01:01:37)The importance of sea-to-land transitions in animal life (01:10:09)Luisa's outro (01:23:43)Producer: Keiran HarrisAudio engineering: Ben Cordell, Milo McGuire, Simon Monsour, and Dominic ArmstrongContent editing: Luisa Rodriguez, Katy Moore, and Keiran HarrisTranscriptions: Katy Moore
“For me, the whole motivation is to facilitate people to come to a place of vision, is to be really activated in their gift, and really starting to deliver their gift to the world, because the world needs it to function better.”In this episode, Ingrid and Jean-Claude take us into their work in nature and people connection, through the Wisdom of the Earth School in British Columbia, Canada, and their work in France with Troiseme Option. In particular we explore their adult immersion program, a 1-3 year full-time program that uses nature connection to take participants on a transformative journey, one that helps them connect with their vision and gifts and prepares them to bring those gifts out into the world. We discuss the purpose of immersion, how the journey is healing, and where some of the participants have taken the work after finishing the program. We also learn about what the adults learn from their interaction with the children's' programs, how nature connection differs in different cultures, and the power of deep listening. We hope you enjoy!Read the Podcast Transcript HereAdult Immersion ProgramThere are still openings in the Adult Immersion Program at Wisdom of the Earth this September, if you are interested in participating. Originally trained as a physical education school teacher in his native France, Jean-Claude left the beginnings of a career as a professional soccer player when he almost died from a serious illness. This awakened him to a path of meaning and nature connection, and he spent over a decade as a mountain wilderness guide, leading groups of children, at-risk youth, and adults on horse, ski, and foot through the French Pyrenees, to support them in connecting to their inner Wild Nature. He established a remote mountain equestrian centre with over 150 horses, now run by a woman he mentored when she was a teen.About IngridIngrid Bauer is the co-founder of Wisdom of the Earth, and has been working with and sharing deep connective practices for over 30 years. The mother of 4 children aged 14 to 35, Ingrid is committed to growing peace from the roots by addressing how we practice compassion with ourselves and each other, how we nurture and educate children, and how we embody interdependence in creating communities that nourish and care for each living being within the whole web of life.Visit Living Connection 1st for more information about our work in nature connection and people connection.
In his book “The End of Eden: Wild Nature in the Age of Climate Breakdown,” Adam Welz provides stunning examples of the devastating impact of climate change on the natural world. In this episode of Bloomberg Intelligence's ESG Currents podcast, the author joins BI director of ESG research Eric Kane to discuss why he prefers the term climate breakdown over climate change, how he selects species to focus on given the myriad examples, and why it's important to look beyond the impact of climate change on humans. This Earth Day, I'd like to honor the importance of our connection to the natural world by welcoming the insightful Derrick Jensen, an author and environmental activist whose work has profoundly influenced me from an early age. We explore the stark contrast between our knowledge of commercial jingles and movie stars versus our understanding of the stars in the sky and the edible plants in our own backyards. How has our relationship with nature changed so drastically over the centuries? And what does this mean for our souls and our future?Derrick paints a vivid picture of a world teeming with life, a stark contrast to the ecological devastation we witness today. Can we truly comprehend the rapid pace of loss that's occurring right before our eyes? We discuss the concept of addiction, not just in terms of substances, but in how we've become enslaved to technology and convenience. What are the implications of this enslavement for our planet and our very humanity?Join us as we grapple with these questions and consider the idea of communal decision-making. Could it be the key to balancing innovation with tradition, action with contemplation? And what might we learn from the Okanagan decision-making process that honors the perspectives of youth, elders, mothers, and fathers? Tune in to find out how we might navigate the complex relationship between our technological advancements and the natural world we seem to be drifting away from.Hailed as the philosopher poet of the environmental movement, Derrick Jensen is author of twenty-five books, including The Myth of Human Supremacy, Endgame and A Language Older Than Words. He holds a degree in creative writing from Eastern Washington University, a degree in mineral engineering physics from the Colorado School of Mines, and has taught at Eastern Washington University and Pelican Bay State Prison. He has packed university auditoriums, conferences, and bookstores across the nation, stirring them with revolutionary spirit.Books mentioned in this episode:A Language Older Than Words by Derrick JensenAll books mentioned on this podcast can be found at sometherapist.com/bookshop or by following the Amazon affiliate links provided here. In this conversation, Dr. D and Dr. B discuss the challenges and shortcomings of the current education system and treatment practices for young people. They explore the need to honor adolescents' unique needs and wild nature, and the importance of helping children find their own meaning and purpose. The conversation highlights the role of parents in shaping their children's paths and the importance of self-reflection in parenting. They also touch on the debate between coaching and psychotherapy. Overall, the conversation emphasizes the need for systemic changes to make education and life more meaningful for young people. Takeaways The education system is not set up for energetic young men and needs to be more aligned with their needs. Parents should focus on helping their children find their own meaning and path, rather than imposing their own expectations. Anxiety can serve a purpose and should be harnessed and used in a productive and healthy way. Fearful and guilty parenting can limit a child's opportunities and growth. Preventing limitations in children involves honoring their individuality and supporting their unique paths. Thanks for listening to this episode of Pagecast, brought to you by Jonathan Ball Publishers. This episode features Author Adam Welz, speaking about his latest book - The End of Eden Wild Nature in the Age of Climate Breakdown. Typically, discussions on climate change highlight the adverse effects on human societies due to storms, droughts, and sea level rise. Yet, it's the natural world, facing a sixth mass extinction due to ecosystem disruptions and rising temperatures, that bears the brunt of climate breakdown. This has endangered countless species, signalling a rapid loss of the natural world. "The End of Eden" navigates this narrative by offering a unique perspective on the struggles of wild species across diverse ecosystems globally. Through a mix of natural history, firsthand accounts, and modern research, Welz introduces us to the intimate struggles of several species against climate breakdown. This book stands out for its deep research and beautiful prose, aiming to foster a deeper human-nature connection and urging action to protect the natural world. In this episode of Pagecast Welz is in conversation with CapeTalk Afternoon Drive host, John Maytham. Enjoy the episode!

In Episode 137 of "The Dustin Gold Standard," Dustin continues with his analysis of the 1995 paper “Industrial Society And Its Future,” which predicted almost everything that we are facing today. No, this paper was not a science fiction novel, it was a warning to mankind about what was to come if we did not destroy the technological system. Tonight, Dustin discusses what the world will look like in 50 years if the system wins the war against humanity, nature, and freedom, and how the author believes a war can be waged against the system using Wild Nature as the counter-ideal. Episode 164: Are you a fan of Raptors or birds of prey? Members of this large group of magnificent birds include hawks, eagles, falcons, and owls. For many of us, seeing raptors in cities and in the wilderness is awe-inspiring. To learn more about these amazing birds, I am joined by Lisa Owens Viani and Allen Fish, co-founders of the nonprofit Raptors Are the Solution (RATS). We begin by chatting about the wonders of raptors and why Lisa and Allen have devoted so much of their lives to helping these birds. We then discuss the impact that anticoagulant rodenticides is having on raptors and wildlife. Used worldwide, rodenticides (or rat poisons) affect not only rats, but also large numbers of non-target animals including raptors, bobcats, mountain lions, coyotes, bears, and fish. Rodenticides enter the food chain when animals eat poisoned rodents and receive secondary exposure. Anticoagulant rodenticide ingestion can lead to immune suppression, rodenticide-induced mange, internal hemorrhaging, and death. The overgrowth of rats is caused partly by a lack of predators. We talk about how the poisons we use to control rats end up harming or killing the very predators that are efficient at keeping rodent populations in check. This interview contains vital information about how we can be better caretakers of our shared environment. All of us can take action to protect raptors and wildlife from anticoagulant rodenticides. What can we do? Start with avoiding the use of toxic rat poisons. Don't make your yard a rat haven. Exclusion, sanitation, and trapping are effective nontoxic methods of rodent control. Visit the Raptors are the Solution website for tips on how to make your yard less attractive to rats, educational resources, an activist toolkit, and more at raptorsarethesolution.org Guests: Lisa Owens Viani is a long time environmental writer and wildlife advocate. Lisa co-founded and directs Raptors Are The Solution- or RATS, a project of Earth Island Institute. RATS educates about the ecological role of raptors and the enormous danger that they and all wildlife, as well as pets and children, face from the wide use and availability of anticoagulant rat poisons. RATS partners with other agencies, scientists, municipalities, and NGO's to work toward eliminating toxic rodenticides from the food web. RATS' multi-pronged approach includes public education as well as legislative and legal work to achieve better regulation of these products. Lisa was honored as the Fund for Wild Nature's Grassroots Activist of 2021 and received a Special Achievement Award on behalf of raptors from the International Owl Center in 2018. Allen Fish is the Associate Director for Conservation and Community Science at the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy. Allen is also the director of the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory since its founding in the mid 1980s. The Golden Gate Raptor Observatory is a four-decades-old community-science program of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy in cooperation with the National Park Service. It's set up to monitor the largest migration site for birds of prey in the Pacific Flyway. Allen was a Lecturer at UC Davis from 2003 to 2011 where he taught Raptor Biology. Allen has a long history of writing and public speaking on raptor biology and conservation, urban wildlife ecology, climate change impacts, and the power of community science. Allen was awarded Bay Nature's Environmental Educator of the Year Award in 2016 and Golden Gate Audubon honored Allen with the Elsie Roemer Award for Conservation in 2020. In 2011, Allen assisted Lisa in founding Raptors are the Solution. Allen lives with his family in Berkeley, and has recently become obsessed by the lives and ecology of dragonflies. Note: I was inspired to pursue this topic when I noticed that I wasn't hearing as many owls at night in my neighborhood. When disoriented rats began stumbling around our yard during the day and several were found dead in our yard, I did some research and discovered that rat poisons or anticoagulant rodenticides were the likely culprit-not only responsible for the dying and dead rats, but also for the decreased owl numbers. I decided to write an article Silent Night- The Unintended Consequences of Rodenticides and in doing my research, I discovered Raptors Are the Solution (RATS). Folk collective Spell Songs was born as a musical companion to the two books of meditations on nature by writer Robert MacFarlane and artist and naturalist Jackie Morris. The recordings are tender naturalist-chamber-folk spell-poems of wildness, beauty, loss, and hope, inspired by the creatures, art and language in The Lost Words and The Lost Spells books. Each spell is a summoning of sorts, conjuring an animal, bird, tree or flower - from Barn Owl to Red Fox, Oak to Bramble, Jay to Jackdaw - with which we share our lives and landscapes. The musicians wrote together on their “open plan” of musical ideas for Spell Songs II: Let The Light In, combining their guitar, harp, cello, keyboard, woodwind, kora, percussion and vocal harmonies. Spoken voice, whispers, accents, dialects, native languages, birdsong, the bark of foxes, the soft sound of a moth's wing, the sound of a children's climate strike; all increase the intimacy and power of the musical world conjured by Spell Songs II. Spell Songs performs excerpts from the new album; and Scottish singer Julie Fowlis and Senegalese-born kora virtuoso Seckou Keita chat about the project from London. This is the grand finale poem of Karla's Spoken Word debut “Not My Country”. This poem speaks to the way nature calls us home, in a time of human destruction and devastation. As a modern human and woman, what does it mean to embrace my wildness? Am I wild or domesticated, and what does that even mean? I explore that and my feelings about it in this week's podcast.Episode Highlights00:30 When we look at our pet cat and dog, and the birds outside, we believe that they have something we don't have, and we call it wildness.01:01 We preface the word “instincts” with “wild,” and feel there's something magical and mysterious going on there.01:15 We have the sense that there is something very powerful and intense and desirable about wildness, but most of us shy away from identifying what that is or connecting with it.01:20 Humans crave connection with the wild part of ourselves, but we get weird about how we embrace it.01:37 We criticize ourselves for the qualities we identify as being wild, even if we desire more of those qualities in ourselves.02:10 If I can't predict what someone's going to do, that's scary.02:50 We have plenty of rules about how we are supposed to be, act, think, and even feel. Rules about what it means to be a good person.04:05 If I go out and lay in a soggy heap on my lawn, which is what I feel like doing, what will my neighbors think? That's not acceptable as a civilized person!04:45 Part of me is intensely jealous of my cat's ability to lay in inconvenient sunbeams and give zero fucks if it makes it hard for us to walk down the stairs.05:15 Am I allowed to just lay in a sunbeam because I think that would feel nice right now? That I even question this is proof I've lost my wildness.05:30 It's the tiny impulses that we squash because we judge them as too ridiculous to pursue, but those small impulses are our wildness calling us to play.06:01 Faced with my inaction, I come up with a lot of excuses.06:17 The truth is that I could do things, I am just NOT doing them.07:09 What are the things that a wild human would do that I am not doing?07:42 The wild part of myself is the one who wants to kick off all of the made-up responsibilities I feel compelled to enact every day.08:25 Thumbing through Instagram for an hour every day doesn't make me feel embodied or great about being human, but skipping with glee over a hill can do that.08:40 Are we capable of taking a minute to be barefoot and connect with the ground with our bodies without thinking about what it all means?11:13 I don't see humanity breaking out of our narrow paths of acceptable behavior very often in ways that are fun and unthreatening, but I want more of that.11:23 Most of us follow the routine that we built up over the course of our life without ever questioning it or trying something too different.11:41 There's no other creature who uses alarm clocks. This tells us a lot about people in comparison to the rest of the natural world.12:00 The power of our minds and emotions is that we can sabotage ourselves from doing something that comes naturally and make it hard just by thinking about it too much.13:11 Wild creatures don't agonize or lament their activities, they just do them and move through it.14:10 Our language when speaking about our instincts is often about giving up or giving in.15:40 Our language Support the showYour donations mean the world to me and allow me to continue to create content each week. This month (May 2021) is #mentalhealthawarenessweek and I am doing a series of 5 interviews with friends & colleagues in my field of psychology around this year's theme of NATURE. This first episode of this series is with Lian Brook-Tyler and she is talking about WILD NATURE Lian is the co-founder of Primal Happiness soon to be known as 'WAKING THE WILD' and a Soul Embodiment Guide for leaders and magical ones. Her mythical journey began when she leapt from corporate leadership onto the path of spirituality, after she suddenly, and somewhat mysteriously, recovered from 15 years of chronic pain and anxiety. That inexplicable transformation led her to immerse herself in discovering what creates struggle, and conversely, how to create a life overflowing with love, beauty, and magic. Her work today is focused on leading men and women along the soul-led, open-hearted sovereign path of Waking The Wild… guiding them to reclaim their wildness and actualise their deepest gifts. Lian lives in a 400-year-old, quintessentially English country cottage with her husband, two children, and an array of ginger rescue animals. She is living into her vision of liberating wild souls to be the unique medicine they came here to be. I hope you enjoy listening to Lian's magical wisdom around waking her wild heart, and how this has impacted her life for the better. Love, Charli X You can find my free Facebook group for women here

Ecoterrorism isn’t a word you hear a lot these days and it’s usually associated with groups like Greenpeace. That might be changing. In 2011, a biotechnology researcher was shot and killed in Mexico. A group called ITS took credit. "We have said it before, we act without any compassion in the feral defense of Wild Nature," reads the group’s manifesto. Is the new generation of activists using violence to save the planet or satisfy a darker, more nihilist urge? You can listen to War College on iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play or follow our RSS directly. My guest for this transmission is Joanna Lambert, a psychotherapist who is greatly inspired by Carl Jung's work with inner alchemy and Clarisa Pinkola Estes' book Women Who Run With the Wolves. Joanna's practice is focused on helping women reclaim and cultivate their wildish nature from the inside out as the divine feminine energy rises in modern society. Joanna and I get into a deep discussion about the resurgence of the feminine nature into society and how being willing to do the inner work shapes who we are from the inside out, as well as helps the collective to embody higher consciousness living.Resources mentioned in this transmission: Women Who Run With the WolvesDr. Christiane NorthrupFrancis WellerRudolf SteinerConnect with Joanna online: WebsiteInstagramLiberate Your Self Podcast online: WebsitePatreonInstagramThis podcast is supported by a group of benevolent beings on Patreon. Telling a story of young environmentalists reaching for their dreams. In This Podcast: Becoming a scriptwriter had been a goal she set to the side while she worked her way into corporate finance law. However, when Vivienne DeCourcy heard the story of a young award winning garden designer's journey, she found her way back. She shares how searching for a garden design consult then filled her need to connect to nature and introduced her to an amazing woman with an amazing story. This is the background of how the film Dare to Be Wild was completed. Don't miss an episode! Click here to sign up for podcast updates or visit www.urbanfarm.org/podcast Vivienne came from a long family line of market gardeners, academics and rebels, yet somehow found herself having lived for 20 years in a Chicago high rise practicing corporate finance law. She really missed the landscape of her childhood - between Dublin and West Cork, and after getting breast cancer in her early thirties, she left corporate law, followed a childhood dream and started writing scripts. She went back home and bought a small hill farm where her love for natural landscape, writing, and trying to make the farm hers, came together and gave her the opportunity to write the script for Dare to be Wild, released spring 2016. DARE TO BE WILD, is a romantic adventure based on the true story of two young environmentalists, whose quest is to show the world the power of wild nature as they reach for their dreams - one garden, one vast desert, at a time. SPECIAL UPDATE: This film opens on Netflix APRIL 1st! Go to www.urbanfarm.org/daretobewild for more information and links on this podcast, and to find our other great guests.

TRUE CRIME - On this episode of Those Conspiracy Guys we look at one of the longest running terror campaigns in history and the most prolific serial criminal in America, Ted Kaczynski also known as The Unabomber. From the late 70s Ted Kaczynski sent explosive packages through the post to unsuspecting colleges, universities, airlines and academic personnel right up until his capture in Montana in 1997.The FBI began looking for this mysterious bomber after a package was found in the hold of an American Airlines flight that had failed to detonate. The primitive bomb could have done a lot of damage and some similar bombs had been sent to Northwestern University and other colleges, to be opened by computer science and engineering professors. This reign of terror lasted for 20 years as the FBI were unable to find any evidence to discover the identity of the bomber, and they created a task force to try to capture even some small piece of evidence to apprehend this unattainable terrorist.Ted Kaczynski was a bonifide genius with an IQ of 167 and he was accepted to Harvard at just 16 years of age. His college experience was far from idyllic however; thanks to the hands of DR Henry A Murray Ted was subjected to MK Ultra mind control techniques and it was reported to have broken his psyche. This is cited as the reason for Teds crimes after his capture, but because of his intelligence he was able to elude capture from the FBI and the hundreds of agents assigned to the case. Ted would leave small clues and taunt the law enforcement with red herrings and secret messages in the bombs. One such secret message was not so much a note as a novel; known as The Manifesto, titled ‘Industrial Society and its future’ was a scathing and cynical critique of modern society and its reliance on technology and industrialisation. Ted longed for a society that was much closer to ‘Wild Nature’ and this could be why he decided to check out of modern society and live in a box cabin in the woods of Montana. The Manifesto however was the key piece of evidence that would be used to apprehend him using new state of the art forensic techniques.Every bomb that passes through the hands of the FBI was rigorously examined forensically by the FBI but no trace of DNA or fingerprints could be found. Enter James Fitzgerald FBI field agent and soon to be forensic linguistics expert, who cracked the code of the manifesto and exposed the identity of Kaczynski. Using pattern recognition and linguistic analysis Fitzgerald was able to identify the Unabomber speech and a very public sting operation was set up so the FBI could finally put a name to the bombs. The B&E Podcast #095 "Embracing the Wild Nature of Creativity" w/ Shane Martin Soundcloud Link: soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: "If we could just let go a little more, who knows what we could create." Wow. This quote from our guest is the centrepiece for this fantastic conversation on creativity process and learning to embrace some of our powerlessness in grappling with the process. POINT #1: "RIDE THE WAVE" -We don't control much of how creativity or inspiration works. It has a life of its own. If we fight it, we will get tossed and smashed under the waves. If we learn to embrace it and work with it, we can achieve something amazing. POINT #2: "FOOLS OF THE TRADE" -We can fight technology, we can fight the tools, we can curse them, we can get aggravated, but in the end, it's all neutral. We decide our involvement with it, and how much we engage with it. We still decide its influence in our lives. POINT #3: "HUMBLE PIE" -Humility can serve us as artists in profound ways. It helps us detach, it helps us find freedom, and helps us surrender to the creative process. So Today is day 3 of the 7 day total transformation. This is the challenge, " Can we give ourselves permission to give an outside source the power to move us into a new mindset? You know we have made our choices for a reason. It seems it was safe for some unknown reason to hide in the idea that we were somehow more spiritual, caring, loving and sensitive if we show others that we understand their pain, their lack.Guess what we have to awaken in our mind is the dream we share that boat.As I write to you today I am excited share the discovery of my revamping my map. Will I succeed in 7 days to realign my delights, my passion into an expression of a truly free and honourable life?Witness my change give me feedback on what you can see as my transformation.Visit Vickers Tree

Nature means something different to everyone. It’s a towering old-growth redwood forest to some. Deep silent canyons to others. And urban community gardens to others. Defining what is “pristine nature” is even more dicey. Just ask conservation biologists trying to figure out the best ways to preserve ecosystems and their flora and fauna. Co-host Susan Moran interviews Emma Marris, whose new book called “Rambunctious Garden: Saving Nature in a Post-wild World” sheds light on how notions of wilderness preservation are evolving to accommodate the ever-changing natural world, and our own role in it. Tom McKinnon interviews Jeff Bisberg of Albeo Technologies about the new lighting revolution in solid-state LEDs.
