Howard Thies is the founder of Arctic Man, a winter race that combines snowmachines, skiers and snowboarders. It takes place at Summit Lake in Paxson, Alaska and it pairs a snowmachiner and a skier or a snowmachiner and a snowboarder. It's one of the fastest and most unique races in the world. Skiers and snowboarders start at 5,800 feet and descend to the bottom of a canyon. There they link up with their snowmachine partner, who passes them a tow rope and hauls them uphill for over two miles. Once they're at the top, skiers and snowboarders separate from their snowmachiner and point it 1,200 feet to the finish line. The fastest competitors have reached speeds of up to 90 miles per hour. The idea for Arctic Man came from a bar bet between Howard and two other guys. He wagered he could beat them to the bottom of the mountain. So, they all gave the bartender $100 and agreed the winner would take all. Howard won that bet and soon after created what would become Arctic Man. The first one was in 1986. 10 teams competed that year. The next year, there were 25 teams. And then in the 90s, there were 65 teams. It kept growing, becoming more and more popular among racers, families and partiers. For the racers, it was an opportunity for glory and cash; for families and party people, it was spring break. Over the years, it's become a lot of different things to a lot of different people. And Howard's been there the whole time organizing and keeping the peace. He's 75 now and he's amazed at what Arctic Man turned into, but he's unsure of how much longer it will continue. This year, maybe next year. Maybe even the year after that. It's just so much work and he's getting older and can't do everything he once did — setting the course, for example, by putting up fences, flags and gates. Even the idea of passing it on is funny to him. He laughs and says, “First of all, nobody's that stupid.”

The final episode in a series about IMEG's refreshed Sustainability Plan features Olivia Paxson, a structural engineering designer with the firm. Olivia is also the Sustainability Plan's champion in IMEG's St. Louis office, where she collaborates with her co-workers to implement the plan's mandated and optional initiatives. “We've already switched to LED lighting and that's thanks to the people we rent from,” she says. “We have a dishwasher, and we have reusable utensils, and we're really close to a metro line as well as bus stations.” Like most IMEG offices, the St. Louis team is a tenant in its building and will be working to find more ways to collaborate with the other tenants and the owner to enact further changes. Olivia is excited over the effort she has seen across IMEG and the potential for meaningful change. “I think this collective action is so important because one individual can only do so much,” she says. “All the offices have come together—different people of different backgrounds, and they're not all engineers. We've got such a variety of people and because we're able to come together I think we can be pushed so much further.”

What if Armando Bacot averages 16 points and 13 rebounds a game this season? These are great hypothetical questions that will have impacts not only on these players but also RJ Davis, Harrison Ingram, Elliot Cadeau, Jae'lyn Withers, etc.Host Isaac Schade and Coach Pac Kilby take you through each of these “what if…?” Scenarios.Locked On Tar Heels Discord: https://discord.gg/rsRVGmcUFollow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

The 2023-24 UNC Basketball Roster Preview series continues, moving to the grad transfers. We've already tackled the incoming freshmen (Elliot Cadeau and Zayden High), the two returning sophomores (Seth Trimble and Jalen Washington), plus the two juniors (Stanford transfer Harrison Ingram and West Virginia transfer James Okonkwo), the lone scholarship senior (RJ Davis) and Jae'lyn Withers. Today we tackle Brown transfer Paxson Wojcik. Wojcik move from the Ivy League to the ACC as a 6'5 shooter who's made 36% of his career threes. Is the translatable to UNC? Wojcik is not just a shooter, but averaged seven rebounds and three assists last season in 34 MPG. How much will he play at UNC and what will he average? Coming from a lineage of basketball players, including his dad who used to be an assistant for UNC and is now in the same role at Michigan State, how does Wojcik's background help his on-court performance? Isaac Schade and Pac Kilby break it all down. Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

For all fans, some good news this week: there's officially under 100 days until tipoff. And for Tar Heel fans, an especially good week as Carolina and Kansas announced a true home-and-home series, the first of its kind between the two schools. We'll (sorta) try to contain our excitement and speak to why we're so hyped on this and think these mini-series should exist across the entire college basketball world. Also, a final transfer deep dive into former Brown Bears star Paxson Wojcik –– what he adds to this season's Tar Heel roster and how his skillset could transfer from the Ivy League to the ACC.X/Threads: @PointPasserPod
Past life regression is an ancient method for recalling past life incarnations. Used by elders of Atlantis, the ancient Greek mystics and philosophers, and medieval Kabalists to reclaim past wisdom and capabilities, past life regression reappeared in the mid-twentieth century. At first a curiosity, soon past life regression was used as a psychotherapy technique, particularly for recalcitrant problems not relieved by more conventional therapies.
Jeff and Paxson from the Alaska Landmine break down what transpired over the last five months with the proposed Holtan Hills housing development in Girdwood. It started with a proposal from the Heritage Land Bank in 2021 to build housing in Girdwood. It heated up when many Girdwood residents opposed the development at an Anchorage Assembly meeting in December 2022. In February, the Assembly voted to table the development, preventing it from moving forward. Since, Paxson uncovered how a small group of wealthy Girdwood residents manipulated Anchorage community councils with misinformation related to the project. The situation is a case study in how rich and powerful people abuse the public process to stop new housing from being built.

Kansas freshman MJ Rice entered the transfer portal on Wednesday and is a SF that North Carolina should take a long, hard look at as a potential replacement for the players that transferred out from the ‘3' position – Tyler Nickel, Dontrez Styles, Puff Johnson, not to mention Leaky Black running out of eligibility. Paxson Wojcik talked with Inside Carolina and discussed his commitment to North Carolina, including why he's not concerned about the transfers out or last season's results. Dalton Knecht's highlights are impressive. Kennedy Todd-Williams has committed to Ole Miss. After a subpar year for UNC, and a strong closing run for Vanderbilt, many in the Carolina fan base have begun rumbling about Jerry Stackhouse as a potential replacement for Hubert Davis. This is just silly and the numbers prove it. Not only is it too early to even think about firing Coach Davis, Coach Stackhouse, one of the greatest Tar Heels of all time, is not the right fit, at least with things as they are now. Transfer portal season is upon us. Carolina has reached out to Brown grad transfer Paxson Wojcik and Towson grad transfer Nick Timberlake, both 6'4 guards. One night Harry handed a camera to her and Cate found her niche. She was hired on to staff as the official summer stage photographer. Dark Matter with Art Bell - Gregory Paxson Past Life Regressions
When I started my business, I honestly didn't even know what copywriting was. I immediately jumped to the context of the legal jargon, trademarks, etc. Then I realized that copywriting is the fundamental art and science behind the way everything is worded. Nothing is really by accident when we're talking about a successful business owner and how they're deploying copywriting on their websites, their pages, their social media, and in anything they do. I think that it's so powerful. I wanted to have a true expert join me to unpack this a bit. Enter, Jess Jordana Paxson! Jess Jordana is a copywriter (a.k.a. heart translator) who helps creative business owners turn their passion into words people actually "get." She runs Jess, XO, a copywriting agency for creative entrepreneurs and is the founder of The Promptlate® Shop. She's worked with everyone from solopreneurs to organizations like The Rising Tide Society, The GUIDE Culture, CEO School, and The Social Bungalow. We're unpacking the different dimensions of business where copywriting comes into play, talking about holistically how we can use it better in our businesses, and what it's really designed for so you can find someone to work with who will align with your vision and work with you to be able to express your voice accurately through copy. * Related episodes: 170. The Final Four Is Not On The Schedule - A Michigan State Basketball Podcast.
December 8, 2022: Michigan State returns home after a successful trip to Happy Valley with a quick turnaround again but this time their opponent won't have a rest advantage. The Brown Bears of the Ivy League visit on Saturday coming off a tight one point win over in-state rival, Rhode Island and carry a five game winning streak into the Breslin. Led by MSU assistant coach Doug Wojcik's son, Paxson, the Brown Bears will look to pull off an upset over the Spartans. Despite MSU being a 16 point favorite, there is a lot for the Spartans to work on in this game. They will need to carry over their solid defense and improved play from AJ Hoggard to win this game in a comfortable fashion. But rest assured, MSU will be tested by a Brown team that can score from behind the arc and leads the nation in defensive rebounding allowing only an 18.9% offensive rebounding percentage from opponents. Mercifully, after this game MSU will have 11 days rest before their next game. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

This episode features excerpts from an oral history conversation between Marjorie “Marj” Paxson and Jean Gaddy Wilson recorded in 2007 for the National Women and Media Collection's 20th Anniversary. Wilson talks with Paxson about her career in media, her role in the establishment of the National Women and Media Collection (NWMC), and her views on the state of journalism for women at the turn of the 21st Century. About the Guests: MARJORIE “MARJ” PAXSON Marjorie “Marj” Bowers Paxson was born on August 13, 1923, in Houston, Texas. She attended Rice University in Houston for two years, where she worked on the student newspaper, the Thresher. In 1942 Paxson transferred to the University of Missouri and graduated in 1944. While at the University of Missouri, she worked on the Columbia Missourian. Over the course of her journalistic career, she held various reporting, editorial, and publishing positions at the United Press, Associated Press, Houston Post, Houston Chronicle, Miami Herald, St. Petersburg Times, Philadelphia Bulletin, Idaho Statesman, Chambersburg Public Opinion, and Muskogee Phoenix. Paxson was also named editor of Xilonen, an eight-page daily newspaper published for the United Nations World Conference for International Women's Year held in Mexico City in 1975. She retired in 1986 and continued writing a column for the Muskogee Phoenix until 2004. In 1987, Paxson donated $50,000 and her personal papers to help establish the National Women and Media Collection at the Western Historical Manuscript Collection (now administered by the State Historical Society of Missouri). Marjorie “Marj” Paxson died on June 17, 2017. JEAN GADDY WILSON Jean Gaddy Wilson is a professional consultant who has spoken on five continents and who spent fourteen years as a Professor of Journalism at the University of Missouri. She is a co-author, along with Brian S. Brooks and James L. Pinson, of the journalism textbook Working With Words: A Handbook for Media Writers and Editors. She is the founder of New Directions for News, an innovation think tank, at the University of Missouri School of Journalism, and her work led to the founding of the Journalism and Women Symposium (JAWS) and the International Women's Media Foundation. She co-founded the National Women and Media Collection (NWMC) with Gannett publisher Marj Paxson and the Western Historical Manuscript Collection (now administered by the State Historical Society of Missouri).
For this week’s episode, I’m joined by NYU psychologist Jonathan Haidt, author of several books, including (with Greg Lukianoff) The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure and The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion. Jonathan is also the co-founder of Heterodox Academy, where I serve on the advisory council. Despite that connection, this is our first extended public conversation. This is not, however, the first time I’ve engaged with Jon. After a talk some years ago, I asked Jon a question during the Q&A session, which I reintroduce here. Heterodox Academy’s mission is very important, but does focusing exclusively on viewpoint diversity prevent us from acknowledging that some viewpoints are more cogent than others? Jon’s recent Atlantic article “Why the Past 10 Years of American Life Have Been Uniquely Stupid” generated a lot of discussion, and he elaborates on his theory of “structural stupidity” here. He claims that, at the national level, the Republican Party’s hostility to moderation has made it structurally stupid and unable to examine its own premises, while left-dominated “epistemic institutions,” like journalism and academia, are mired in their own kind of structural stupidity. I find the structural analysis compelling, but I think it elides the fact that some of the Republicans’ policy position are not, in themselves, stupid at all. Jon is concerned that increasing intolerance on the left, especially on college campuses, may be caused by generational changes in child development. Gen Z is the first generation to have had access to social media as children, and they also had far less unsupervised free play than previous generations. I ask Jon whether this shift can account for groupthink around COVID-induced school shutdowns and drastic changes in attitudes toward trans and racial issues in the US. While the academy no doubt leans left, there is much more viewpoint diversity in economics departments than other areas. Jon has some interesting ideas about why. And finally, I ask Jon whether religion could play a role in increasing viewpoint diversity. It was great to finally connect with Jon. I hope and suspect it won’t be the last time we sit down for one of these conversations. This post is free and available to the public. Paxson joined Mark Schanowski and Stacey King to talk about his long career as a player and executive with the Chicago Bulls. We discuss some revised history in his comments. And where do Zach LaVine, Lonzo Ball, DeMar DeRozan, Patrick Williams and Nikola Vucevic fit among the best starting lineups in the East? Are they better than New York, Boston and/or Philadelphia?
