Arranged for a group of our volunteers to visit Lubee Bat Sanctuary Hi Carole, Thank you for your interest in Lubee Bat Conservancy. How about Thursday, April 12? We prefer tours in the afternoon @ 1:00, but can accommodate as early as 11:30. Tours typically last 1-2 hours. Guests will be engaged with an age appropriate powerpoint presentation, followed by a visit to our primary bat facility. We house over 200 bats representing 12 species, including the Malayan Flying Fox which can attain a wingspan of 6'. All of our bats are frugivorous, and guests have an opportunity to observe them interacting with numerous fruits and enrichment devices. We typically request a donation of $15/person for private tours, but I can reduce the cost to $10. Please let me know if you would like to schedule the tour. Best regards, Brian Pope, Director Lubee Bat Conservancy 1309 NW 192nd Ave. Gainesville, FL 32609 www.lubee.org   Spoke at Animal Day in Massachusetts Invited by Dean Diane Sullivan who arranges this every year at the college of law where she teaches. Stayed at the Wyndham in Andover. The talk was well received by about 50-60 students.   I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story.  The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/   I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story.  My hope is that others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and our shared planet.     You can help feed the cats at no cost to you using Amazon Smile! For over 30 years, the Lubee Bat Conservancy has worked to preserve and protect bat species around the world. In addition to its conservation work, Lubee supports much-needed scientific research and public education on the importance of bats for insect control, pollination, and seed dispersal. Despite their fascinating behavior and physiology, these remarkable animals are increasingly under threat of extinction from a wide range of causes, not the least of which is the manner in which the more than 1200 known species of bats are maligned in pop culture and media, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. Director of the Lubee Bat Conservancy, Brian Pope, is guest. In the recent episode of the podcast, I speak with Brian Pope of Lubee Bat Conservancy. Brian has been working with animals his entire life, and but joined Lubee and started working with bats full time in 2007.  I learned a lot speaking with Brian, mainly that bats love playing with toys and taking things apart, that they can eat nearly 5,000-7,000 insects a night, that they are the only things that can pollinate agave plants (which are crucial in the production of tequila), and that they are being used by the Center for Disease Control, the National Institutes of Health, and the US Army Medical Research of Infectious Diseases to find cures for some of the world’s deadliest diseases. Brian puts a lot of myths about bats to rest, including that they are blind, that they are all nocturnal, and that they don’t all echolocate.

Brian Pope is a Managing Direct for Barings Alternative Investments. Barings is a name you have heard more from over the last couple of years here in Charlotte. They have hosted the 1st and 2nd Southeast Fintech Venture Conference on the 26th Floor of the Barings building in downtown Charlotte. They have also been active in the community from a community service perspective. We are also seeing Barings more frequently in the business press as their employees are great resources for the local and national media. Click here to listen. All of that is great for Charlotte and Barings. We are fortunate to have them in Charlotte. Today, though, I sat down with Brian to explore the alternative investment landscape from his perspective. We talk at length about the private equity, venture capital and growth equity markets which is an active private investment space where Brian spends his time. He takes a long-term professional approach on how to invest in these asset classes. Listening to him discuss the nuances of the return potential and risk aspects of early stage investing is very interesting. Surely it’s nice to have a very large portfolio to take a disciplined and calculated approach to managing across these private markets. We took a quick detour to talk about the Charlotte startup scene to hear Brian’s first hand views on the positives in the community relative to the global opportunity set. The momentum and increased local resources are hard to miss these days and is clearly at the top of mind of many people. We also dove into the discussion of why companies are waiting longer to go public and the continued support companies have from private market investors. It was a topic I’ve wanted to discuss with Brian since we booked this interview in late 2018. He didn’t disappoint as it really leads us through the final 30 minutes of the interview – including a look into what else the Charlotte startup community may have to offer in addition to Fintech. Thanks to Brian and his team for everything they do for the Charlotte Startup community. We are fortunate to have them in the community and loved having Brian on the podcast. Local Notes and Thoughts  Dan Roselli and Packard Place are continuing to build their Public House/Keg-Side Chat event. Come join me on Wednesday March 20 as I sit in/drink in for Dan as a guest host and welcome Derek Wang from Stratifyd. Derek and his team have done phenomenal things here in Charlotte and I can’t wait to sit down and discuss some aspects of their growth over the last 4 years. QC Fintech is also in the process of interviewing for their spring class and after speaking with Dan recently they are seeing some really good companies. Be on the lookout for announcements for the spring class and the opportunities you will have to meet them and ultimately support them as they come to Charlotte for 12 weeks to incubate their ideas and companies. Brian Pope was elected Lafayette City Marshal in December 2014, after defeating  Kip Judice in the runoff to succeed longtime incumbent Nickey Picard, whom they'd both defeated in the primary election. The late J.B. Cormier was the fourth candidate in the primary election.Picard's time had passed. Pope's had barely begun when he leapt into the 2015 race for Lafayette Parish Sheriff in support of Scott Chief of Police Chad Leger. It was a fateful decision that might end up ending Pope's political career with the possibility of jail time ahead of him.Pope used the power and authority of his office in an attempt to help Leger's campaign and to hurt Mark Garber's campaign. Garber won the election. Pope has been dealing with the legal repercussions of his acts since 2015.Pope then refused to turn over emails believed to be related to his campaign activities on behalf of Leger which were being sought by The Independent. Emails were erased from the marshal's server but not from Lafayette Consolidated Government's backup servers. The emails were discovered and Pope was found to have violated the state's public records law by refusing to comply with the original request.Later, a Lafayette Parish grand jury indicted Pope on seven felony counts — five counts of malfeasance and two counts of perjury. He's awaiting trial on those charges and has asked that his trial be delayed until next year. The Lafayette City Marshal's office works primarily with Lafayette City Court to enforce bonds, subpoenas and collect fines and fees. Pope, then, is an officer of the court who has found him self being charged (and in some cases convicted) of law violations, has turned his once sedate office into something of a spectacle. When it was revealed in a deposition related to the original email case that Pope has been personally pocketing fees and garnishments in apparent violation of a 2011 opinion from the Louisiana Attorney General, Aimee Boyd Robinson decided she had had enough of the shenanigans. She recruited Steve Wilkerson and together they decided to launch the campaign to recall Brian Pope.On June 12, they filed their petition with the Louisiana Secretary of State's office to formalize the process. They have 180 days from that date (December 12) to reach their goal of  getting 1/3 of the voters in the city-wide district to sign a petition to force a recall election on Pope's tumultuous tenure. That's about 28,00o signatures. They are half-way into the effort. If the recall campaign succeeds (signatures will be counted and verified by the Lafayette Registrar of Voters), a recall election asking voters whether they want Pope recalled or not will appear on the ballot in the spring 0f 2018. If voters oust Pope, there will be a special election in the fall of 2018 when anyone (including Pope) can run for what will by that time be the remaining two-plus years of his term.During that time, Pope's legal battles will continue roll through the courts, ensuring that the Marshal's problems remain high visibility news in Lafayette. And there's still the matter of whether taxpayers can foot the bill for Pope's legal costs.Aimee Boyd Robinson discusses the effort to recall Brian Pope in this podcast.
