Send us a textA Tahoe childhood can shape an athlete for life—and Noah McMahan proves it. At 19, he's a Gonzaga steeplechaser who keeps his easy runs on dirt, wins Broken Arrow 11K off a Hayward Field PR, and carries hard-earned lessons from the World Mountain Running Championships in Spain. We talk about the quiet confidence it takes to recover from injuries, the patience to build fitness through a long collegiate season, and the racecraft to navigate tight European singletrack when the start line explodes. We dig into what it means to balance D1 expectations with trail ambitions: coach buy-in, smart training blocks, and the reality of fitting a “fourth season” into a college calendar. Noah opens up about recruitment from a small Nevada school, why team culture sold him on Gonzaga, and how a kinesiology major helps him stay healthy. He breaks down the Worlds course—road surge, singletrack congestion, switchback duels—and the two changes he'd make next time: more hill-specific work and earlier positioning to avoid bottlenecks.Gear talk includes Nike Ultrafly on race day, a rotation that's open to Saucony for daily miles, and curiosity about adding poles for steeper 23K goals. We share inspiration from Max King, Kilian Jornet, Jim Walmsley, Ruth Croft, and the next wave of hybrid athletes bridging track, road, and mountain disciplines. If you're a young runner considering a future in trail running—or a fan who loves the sport's evolving pathways—you'll hear a clear blueprint for turning college structure into a sustainable pro trajectory. If this story resonates, follow the show, share it with a teammate, and leave a quick review on your favorite app. Your support helps us bring more emerging voices and big trail dreams to the mic.Follow Noah on IG - @noah_mcmahan_Follow James on IG - @jameslauriello Follow the Steep Stuff Podcast on IG - @steepstuff_pod Use code steepstuffpod for 25% off your cart at UltimateDirection.com!

Originally uploaded September 22, reloaded October 5th. Wednesday, September 17th, MBN was on the road to Detroit for CAR - the Center for Automotive Research's 60th annual Management Briefing Seminars. The event moved from The Grand Traverse Resort & Spa to Michigan Central the refurbished railroad hub in the city. This interview was with President Dr. Robert McMahan, Kettering University, Flint, MI. » Visit MBN website: www.michiganbusinessnetwork.com/ » Subscribe to MBN's YouTube: www.youtube.com/@MichiganbusinessnetworkMBN » Like MBN: www.facebook.com/mibiznetwork » Follow MBN: twitter.com/MIBizNetwork/ » MBN Instagram: www.instagram.com/mibiznetwork/ Overview of CAR MBS & 2025 Edition: The Center for Automotive Research (CAR) returns with its flagship Management Briefing Seminars (MBS) 2025, scheduled for September 15–17 in Detroit, hosted in the iconic Michigan Central Station. This relocation signals a bold renewal, marrying automotive heritage with forward-looking mobility innovation. The MBS platform is built to convene leaders across original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), suppliers, mobility services, government, and infrastructure, enabling connection at the nexus of policy, technology, and business strategy. CAR's 2025 tagline—“a new era, a new home”—underscores the intent to redefine expectation. MBS is positioning itself not merely as an industry conference, but as a decision-making engine: the place where executives, strategists, and policymakers gather to debate the future of mobility under one roof. Content will explore major disruptions in the sector: electrification, autonomous systems, infrastructure, regulatory reform, and sustainable business models. Panel sessions and keynotes will examine how shifting global competition, supply chain sovereignty, and policy uncertainty challenge legacy businesses — and empower new entrants. The agenda promises curated sessions across themes: policy and regulation, technology foresight, industry transformation, and strategic planning. CAR will deliver resources through the Whova app and partner portals — slides, video, and supplemental materials — ensuring attendees can revisit content long after the event. Selecting Detroit and Michigan Central Station is deeply symbolic. It reflects a belief in returning to the roots of American mobility while leaning into reinvention. The venue choice embodies the tension the industry faces: honoring legacy while disrupting its own foundations. For businesses and stakeholders, MBS 2025 offers several tangible value propositions: Policy Intelligence: gain insights into regulatory trends, infrastructure planning, and legislative shifts critical to mobility investments. Strategic Exposure: thought leadership, scenario planning, and competitive benchmarking beyond daily operations. Network Leverage: depth of access — from OEM C-suite to technology firms to government actors — opening doors for partnerships, investment, and collaboration. Content Longevity: recorded keynotes, slides, and materials will endure, making MBS a reference resource, not just a live event. Ecosystem Alignment: bringing together fragmented actors in mobility to foster alignment around standards, strategy, and shared goals. Challenges remain. The agenda is still in flux, meaning attendees must remain adaptable. Logistics of Detroit, legacy industry expectations, and maintaining inclusion for smaller firms will require careful curation and execution by CAR. In short, MBS 2025 aims to be more than a conference — it wants to be a turning point in mobility strategy. By marrying Detroit's symbolism with future-forward content, CAR seeks to reset how the auto/ mobility ecosystem convenes, defines direction, and collectively moves forward in an era of rapid transformation.

Is college still worth it? As tuition rises and dropout rates soar, the big question everyone's asking is: how do we prepare young people for a future we can't predict? In this episode, Dr. Robert McMahan, President of Kettering University, unpacks the evolving crisis in higher education and what it truly means to prepare students for the future. He sheds light on the rise of “adulting” classes as a symptom of a larger issue: students entering college without essential life skills. Dr. Robert gives us a peek into Kettering University's integrated experiential model, where students rotate between 12 weeks in class and 12 weeks in cooperative placement roles at real companies—not internships, but embedded work. We also look into why traditional four-year universities are struggling, facing declining public trust, overcapacity, and the looming demographic cliff, and how new learning models and market disruptions are forcing a much-needed reimagining of higher education. Dr. McMahan emphasizes that future-proofing students isn't about teaching them fixed skills like coding, but cultivating habits of mind: critical thinking, adaptability, resilience, and the ability to solve complex problems. ________________ This episode is sponsored by Workhuman: Don't you hate how every HR company out there says they are powered by AI? In a recent episode of "Discovering Grayslake," the spotlight shone on McMahon Services—a company that has grown from humble beginnings into a trusted leader in restoration and cleaning services. Hosted at Agora Co-Working, the conversation with Tom McMahon and Hunter from McMahon Services offered a wealth of insights for homeowners, business owners, and anyone invested in the well-being of their community. This blog post distills the main themes and actionable advice from the episode, diving deep into the nuances of restoration, emergency preparedness, insurance, and the power of community involvement. Whether you're a Grayslake local or simply looking to safeguard your home, these expert tips will help you prepare for the unexpected and build stronger community ties. Table of Contents The McMahon Services Story: From Window Washing to Restoration Experts Tip 1: The Critical Importance of Rapid Response in Emergencies Tip 2: Why Homeowners Should Call Restoration Pros Before Insurance Tip 3: Proactive Home Maintenance to Prevent Disasters Tip 4: Understanding and Optimizing Your Insurance Coverage Tip 5: The Value of Community Involvement and Local Connections Tip 6: Empathy and Support During Times of Crisis Final Thoughts: Building Resilience and Community Spirit The McMahon Services Story: From Window Washing to Restoration Experts McMahon Services' journey began with Tom's grandfather, a Chicago fireman, who started the business by washing windows. Over the years, the company evolved—thanks in part to a pivotal connection with a local insurance agent—into a full-service restoration provider. Today, McMahon Services offers: Water damage restoration Fire and smoke cleanup Mold remediation Biohazard cleanup General cleaning and home improvement services With a staff of over 30 employees and a decade of service in Grayslake and Hainesville, McMahon Services is a testament to the power of adaptability, family values, and community engagement. Tip 1: The Critical Importance of Rapid Response in Emergencies Key Insight: In restoration, time is everything. The sooner professionals arrive, the better the outcome. Why It Matters: Water damage can escalate quickly, leading to mold growth and structural issues within hours. Fast action minimizes damage, reduces costs, and increases the likelihood of salvaging personal property. Actionable Advice: Choose a local provider:** McMahon Services' local ownership allows them to be on-site within an hour, a crucial advantage over larger, less nimble companies. Have emergency contacts ready:** Store the number of a trusted restoration company in your phone and on your fridge. Don't wait for insurance approval:** Immediate mitigation is often required by insurance policies and can prevent claim denials due to “neglect.” Expert Tip: Even if the water seems minor, hidden moisture can cause major problems. Professionals use specialized equipment to detect and dry out unseen water in walls and floors. Tip 2: Why Homeowners Should Call Restoration Pros Before Insurance Key Insight: Restoration experts can help you assess the situation and guide you on whether to file a claim. Why It Matters: Not all water or fire damage is covered by standard policies. Filing unnecessary claims can raise your premiums or result in denied coverage. Actionable Advice: Call restoration first:** Let professionals assess the damage and provide a ballpark estimate. Understand your policy:** Many homeowners are unaware of exclusions (e.g., sump pump failures, sewer backups). Get documentation:** Restoration companies can provide detailed reports and photos to support your claim if needed. Expert Tip: Ask your restoration provider to walk you through the insurance process—they often know what adjusters look for and can help you avoid common pitfalls. Tip 3: Proactive Home Maintenance to Prevent Disasters Key Insight: Many emergencies are preventable with regular maintenance and a little foresight. Why It Matters: Simple oversights, like not detaching hoses in winter, can lead to burst pipes and costly repairs. Sump pump failures are a leading cause of basement flooding. Actionable Advice: Winterize your home:** Detach hoses and shut off exterior hose bibs before freezing temperatures hit. Test your sump pump:** Pour water into the pit to ensure it activates. Consider a battery backup system for power outages. Inspect plumbing and appliances:** Regularly check for leaks, corrosion, and wear. Document your property:** Take photos of valuables and home improvements for insurance purposes. Expert Tip: Schedule seasonal maintenance reminders on your calendar. Prevention is always cheaper than restoration. Tip 4: Understanding and Optimizing Your Insurance Coverage Key Insight: Many homeowners are underinsured or lack the right endorsements for common disasters. Why It Matters: Rising home values and new building codes can leave you under-protected. Not all policies cover basement backups, sump pump failures, or detached structures. Actionable Advice: Review your policy annually:** Meet with your insurance agent to discuss changes in your home or coverage needs. Ask about endorsements:** Ensure you have coverage for water backup, mold, and other common risks. Update for renovations:** Any home improvement or addition should be reported to your insurer. Expert Tip: Keep a digital and physical copy of your policy and inventory list in a safe, accessible place. Tip 5: The Value of Community Involvement and Local Connections Key Insight: Being active in the community builds trust and ensures help is close at hand when disaster strikes. Why It Matters: Local businesses are more invested in the well-being of their neighbors. Community events foster relationships that can be invaluable in times of need. Actionable Advice: Support local businesses:** They're more likely to go the extra mile for their customers. Get involved:** Attend or volunteer at local events, parades, and clean-up days. Network:** Join local chambers of commerce or neighborhood groups to stay informed and connected. Expert Tip: Familiar faces in the community are more approachable during emergencies. Don't hesitate to reach out to those you've met at local events. Tip 6: Empathy and Support During Times of Crisis Key Insight: Restoration is about more than repairs—it's about helping people through some of their toughest moments. Why It Matters: Disasters are emotionally taxing; a compassionate approach makes a world of difference. Empathy builds lasting relationships and trust. Actionable Advice: Choose companies that care:** Look for service providers who emphasize empathy and support. Lean on your community:** Don't be afraid to ask for help or offer it to others in need. Practice kindness:** Small gestures—like checking on a neighbor after a storm—strengthen community bonds. Expert Tip: Restoration professionals often have resources and advice for coping with loss. Don't hesitate to ask for guidance beyond the technical repairs. Final Thoughts: Building Resilience and Community Spirit The story of McMahon Services is a reminder that resilience is built on preparation, relationships, and a willingness to help others. By taking proactive steps—maintaining your home, understanding your insurance, and connecting with your community—you can weather life's storms with greater confidence. Remember: Quick action saves property and peace of mind. The right insurance coverage is your safety net. Community is your greatest resource in times of need. If you're in Grayslake or the surrounding area, consider reaching out to McMahon Services for restoration needs—or just to say hello at the next community event. And wherever you are, take these lessons to heart: prepare, connect, and support your neighbors. That's the hometown way. This episode is sponsored by Lockton, click here to learn more Watch the full video on YouTube - click hereDr. Robert McMahan, President of Kettering University, started out as a kid with binoculars, staring up at the stars, fascinated by the unknown. Now, he's shaping the next generation of leaders who will drive innovation in the auto industry before they even step foot into the workforce. For Dr. McMahan, leadership isn't about power—it's about unlocking the potential of those around you. He believes a true leader creates an environment where people thrive, where great ideas don't just exist but move forward.Too often, companies think they've built a culture of leadership because they've put values on a poster in a conference room, but when you ask employees what those values are, they can't tell you. Dr. McMahan is determined to change that. At Kettering, leadership is modeled, not just taught. Leaders must make tough decisions, but transparency matters—helping people understand why decisions happen so they feel connected to the bigger picture.Kettering isn't your typical university. It operates on a co-op model, where students spend half their time in class and the other half working in the industry. This hands-on approach means graduates don't just have theoretical knowledge—they have actual experience solving problems inside organizations. This model benefits students and keeps the university ahead of industry trends. Students rotate between school and work, bringing back insights about what's happening. That constant feedback loop helps Kettering adapt its curriculum to match the industry's ever-changing needs, making it one of the most future-focused universities in the country. But who is McMahan outside of work? He is a Joni Mitchell fan, an aerobatic pilot (not a great one, he admits), and a lifelong astrophysics nerd—he even had a poster of an astrophysicist on his wall in college. More importantly, he's the kind of university president who walks the halls, buys students coffee, and keeps the conversation going. Because leadership isn't just about decisions—it's about connection. Themes discussed in this episode:The role of education in shaping future automotive leadersWhy the auto industry must shift from command-and-control to authentic leadershipThe key to building an organization with values that drive real cultural changeHow Kettering's co-op model gives students real-world experience before graduationHow future automotive careers will evolve and why students must adapt nowThe disconnect between academic learning and corporate expectations—and how to fix itThe power of real-time industry feedback in keeping STEM education future-readyFeatured guest: Robert McMahanWhat he does: Dr. Robert K. McMahan is the seventh President of Kettering University, where he has led a decade of transformation, strengthening its reputation as a leader in STEM and business education. With a background spanning academia, government, and venture capital, he has been instrumental in shaping innovation policy, technology investment, and engineering education. His career includes roles as a physics professor, science advisor to North Carolina's governor, and senior strategist at In-Q-Tel. Senator Chad McMahan returns to the show this week, where he presented me with an unexpected question about my past. He inquired how hitting rock bottom enabled me to start anew and forge a path that has brought me to where I am today.   The primary focus of his visit was to discuss the school choice bill, which has passed the House and is now headed to the Senate for a vote in the coming weeks. Senator McMahan and I share a common view in support of school choice in Mississippi. We believe this legislation will challenge both underperforming and well-performing public schools while also redirecting public funds to private institutions.   However, I personally oppose this bill, not only because I am against rewarding the Democrats in Jackson, Mississippi, who have led their city into conditions resembling a third-world scenario marked by lawlessness, death, and destruction, but also because I disagree with allowing these children to attend schools in more disciplined, successful neighboring districts.   Additionally, we touched upon Senator McMahan's efforts to increase transparency and accountability within the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) regarding a variety of issues.
