S7E20 -From Beads to Bronze: Konstance Patton's Detroit‑Born Legacy

Detroit is Different

“I didn't think if I stayed, I'd be alive'—that electrifying moment, when Konstance Patton revealed how everything changed the moment she stepped out of Detroit, sets the tone for this compelling episode. In a deeply resonant conversation with Khary Frazier, Patton weaves together the threads of her Black Detroit legacy—from ancestral roots in the Carolinas, Virginia, and New Orleans to intergenerational artistry that stretches back to her grandmother's kiln in Brightmoor and massive bead‑worked Last Supper in a Petoskey museum. She reflects on formative childhood memories riding a bike past seven‑mile gravesites, the comfort of her grandmother's quilts and pottery, and how early encounters with classical violin and swimming taught discipline and collaboration. Through her travels—from a shocking culinary awakening in London to soulful inspirations in Egypt, India, Italy—Patton found her voice in visual storytelling. Now, drenched in paint at her annual ‘potluck' gatherings at Detroit's Talking Doll Studios, her immersive events bring together healing, yoga, music, food, and multi‑generational Black creatives. She tears back the curtain on how grief, burnout, and pandemic‑era protests catalyzed her bold new goddess sculptures—resin and bronze Venus figures cast with beads and needles from her lineage—and how her guerrilla‑style Imani portrait in NYC still stops strangers in their tracks. With upcoming shows at the DIA and deep ties to Detroit institutions like Bird's bar and Talking Doll Studios, this episode captures a living legacy—rooted in the past, dynamically shaping the future of Legacy Black Detroit. Interesting show of Metro Detroit stories today. In the fun category, recently a listener asked why Norris Howard isn't the Baron of Brightmoor, because of the alliteration. He explains why he's the Prince. There was so much demand for Michigan Central's big concert that it sold out - and so have all the tickets for the tour since we recorded this episode and posted. So I won't include that link. Then we get into the race for U.S. House, where Adam Hollier didn't get enough valid signatures to make the ballot, dealing a blow to the possibility of black representation for Detroit and nearby areas. Norris gets into why it matters, but also people need to get their stuff together. This one might rattle some folks. Norris Howard is in straight from Brightmoor on this one. 00:53 - Norris Howard gets his wish as plans are in place to bring Raising Cane's to Metro Detroit (that's not the controversial part)  More: https://www.hometownlife.com/story/news/2023/09/12/raising-canes-canton-new-location-ford-road/70830842007/ 02:50 - The UAW walks out at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network, with more than 1,100 on strike. Between this, the possibility of a strike, and general feelings - are we on the eve of labor power really gaining some traction? 09:22 Then we dive into what's been going on in Hamtramck and the rise of the right wing in the community. Their mayor recently posted about an appearance he had with former National Security advisor Michael Flynn, and there was conflict at the Hamtramck Labor Day festival where city leaders wanted lead the parade and not be next to an LGBTQ group. The changing demographics of the city are driving some to move out, others to not go there, and how the words by some of "everyone is welcome" aren't heard that way and wear thin because of their actions.  Background reading: Free Press: https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/wayne/2023/09/12/trump-michael-flynn-muslims-mayor-hamtramck/70800550007/ Hamtramck Review: http://www.thehamtramckreview.com/mayor-and-city-council-object-being-near-lgbtq-group-in-parade/ Daily Detroit: https://twitter.com/TheDailyDetroit/status/1700229547281522956   Feedback as always - dailydetroit - at - gmail - dot - com or 313-789-3211 Follow us on Apple Podcasts: https://lnk.to/dailydetroitonapple  Or Spotify: https://lnk.to/dailydetroitonspotify  Thanks to our members: http://www.patreon.com/dailydetroit  Or those who do a one-time contribution: http://www.buymeacoffee.com/dailydetroit

Episode Notes A class-action lawsuit initiated in July 2020 is demanding the City of Detroit establish a meaningful water affordability program for low-income residents and a permanent end to water shutoffs. Arguing for the plaintiffs, the ACLU and NAACP were in federal court on February 3 to oppose a motion by the City of Detroit to dismiss the lawsuit. We thought this would be a good time to share, in two consecutive podcast episodes, a conversation that was started last year with participants and facilitators of the Detroit Community High School Makerspace in Brightmoor, who are approaching the water crisis by attempting to democratize access to clean water. "The true purpose of education is to awaken the gifts of our young people." The words of Bart Eddy have guided him and the students at Detroit Community High School (DCHS) for over twenty years. Much of that stated ideal is manifested through the DCHS makerspace, which has become a vital part of the DCHS curriculum and the Brightmoor community. Bart Eddy, co-founder of DCHS and its makerspace, joined Riverwise in February 2020 and again during the summer to discuss the importance of shaping an educational environment around community needs and the various interests of a diverse student body. Along with the bike repair shop, they've been working on a water filtration and catchment system which will allow water-insecure households in Brightmoor and, eventually, across the city, to collect drinkable water from accessible neighborhood water stations. In this 13th installment of the Riverwise Podcast, we present Eddy's insight into the potential of the Makerspace to nurture community while expanding our definition of ‘place-based education'. In the next Riverwise podcast episode, we talk to several current and former DCHS students who share more on the water filtration system and what it means to conceive and execute a project that has an immediate impact on families struggling in their community. The Riverwise Podcast is bringing together Detroit citizens to consider new and forms of resistance to continuing economic and political marginalization in communities of color. For over three years now, the Riverwise collective has created media that depicts local activism and the profound new work being done in Detroit neighborhoods. Through the quarterly Riverwise magazine, Riverwise community conversations, and the Riverwise Writing Workshop, we're developing our collective voice.
