EP22: Mental and Emotional Resilience for Entrepreneurial Success

Bryan Leach spent his school days and much of his early life “chasing a series of brass rings.” A self-described “anxious achiever,” he basked in the social cache of attending Harvard, Oxford University, and finally Yale Law and later clerking for U.S. Supreme Court justices and making partner at a major firm. Eventually, though, he found himself wanting to be more creative and to put something new into the world. He founded Ibotta, leading cashback rewards network in the United States and the first-ever performance-based marketing tool, one which powers large loyalty programs with major corporations like Kroger, Walmart, and Dollar General. This new venture required not only a new set of skills, but a whole new mindset from the one he developed as a lawyer. Being driven by praise and reward helped him to advance academically and professionally, but left him averse to taking risks–a trait essential to entrepreneurship.  As a lawyer, he was used to boasting his credentials and “being paid to be right,” while as an entrepreneur, he had to stand on the strength of his ideas and the results he delivered. How could he change his perspective so that the same obsessiveness and passion that made him successful didn't burn him out or drive him crazy?  The answers are somewhat paradoxical. You have to be vulnerable enough to care deeply about your work, but also be OK if it never works out and you don't get what you want. By asking more questions, showing you don't have all the answers, sharing credit as well as pressure, you show yourself to be a more effective leader than if you act like you can do it all and have it all under control. The bigger the company grows, the more you must trust others to help control it. Though you must keep your identity from being too wrapped up in your company, your personal history and life events will show up in your work style. Bryan tauts the virtues of therapy and shares how he navigated the many instances of what Ben Horowitz calls WFIO (We're F**ked, It's Over). Everyone has WFIO moments, and their own unique path to success, despite our cultures insistence on sharing only superhero stories. In this episode, Bryan shares how, through  mental and emotional resilience, we can successfully navigate our own course.    Quotes “You have to figure out how to build the muscle of rebounding from emotional setbacks and failure at a much higher rate than you ever did when you were striving to be a lawyer.” (9:18 | Bryan Leach) “It's very tempting to fall back on that storytelling trope that we have as a society which overemphasizes the contributions of the founder, hides all the struggles of the founder, and also leads everyone to kind of expect that.” (19:28 | Bryan Leach) “The more vulnerable you are, the more you admit you don't know, the more you seek opportunities to apologize, take responsibility, the stronger you come across, the more authentic you are seen as a leader, the more effective you are.” (25:03 | Bryan Leach) “A lot of people who are successful are happy to share credit but when there's blame they internalize all that blame within themselves. What you should be able to do is share credit and share ownership and responsibility for problem solving, so you're not putting the weight of the Western world on your shoulders all the time.” (28:30 | Bryan Leach)  “You have to create a world where if the company fails you're still OK and proud of yourself, and you're still happy and you learn things and you can go on and try something different. VOE Podcast from the Daniels College of Business

Bryan Leach took an unorthodox path to becoming the founder and CEO of Denver-based Ibotta, beginning his career as a lawyer. After a lightbulb moment and swift career change, Leach has led the cashback technology company for a decade, guiding it to more than 40 million downloads and delivering over $1.1 billion in cash rewards to its users. And, with nearly 750 total employees, Ibotta has been named one of the fastest-growing companies in America by Inc. Magazine in each of the past four years. Leach joined the VOE Podcast to chat about his unique career path, what he's learned at the helm of Ibotta and where Denver stands as a technology hub. Nick Greenhalgh: As the founder and CEO of one Denver's fastest-growing technology companies, the last two years have been a whirlwind for Bryan Leach. When Covid-19 struck, the longtime Ibotta leader organized weekly calls with area business leaders to discuss how they were navigating the choppy waters of a never before experienced pandemic. Now, after a decade at the helm of the cashback technology company, Leach joined the VOE podcast to share his wisdom on building culture at a fast-growing firm, how Ibotta attracts and retains key employees and what Denver needs to do to remain relevant as a tech hub. Welcome, Bryan, to the VOE Podcast. Bryan Leach: Thanks for having me. Nick Greenhalgh: Great to have you here. Before we sort of get into where Ibotta is today, I want to take a step back and talk a little bit about your background. You sort of have an unorthodox path to tech founder and CEO, with a full-fledged career in law, prior to landing at Ibotta. What led you away from law and into tech? Bryan Leach: I loved many aspects of being a lawyer. I thought it would be just like it was on television, like it was in A Few Good Men. It turned out that there were fewer fence line shootings in Cuba that I got to investigate and fewer cross examinations in swashbuckling form, and a little bit more research and writing. And I enjoy research and writing, but I'm really an extrovert, and I like interacting with people more often. And the trials were great, but they weren't very frequent, compared to the writing portion. So I started to sort of find entrepreneurial things to do within the law. So I started by helping to build an international arbitration practice at my firm, which meant dreaming up our different approach to international arbitration, going and learning about it, getting the credentials, traveling to conferences. And I realized that I was not super well suited for international arbitration when I went to a conference in Rio and I was the only person there who was monolingual. I was from a city that no one had really heard of in the international arbitration world, and a firm that really didn't do any of this work. I also realized that I was enjoying pitching my business so much more than practicing the actual business. So I would win the business, and then what I won was a chance to write 250 pages of briefs. So I realized that the sales element was actually what I loved, and that being a trial lawyer is really telling stories and s...

Ibotta CEO, Bryan Leach - graduated from Harvard, went to Oxford on Marshall Scholarship and then got his law degree from Yale in 2005. Then after a year clerking for US Supreme Court Justice David Souter and joining a Denver law firm, he quit law after he saw someone on an airplane taking pictures of business cards with a phone. The observation made him realize that people would rather take pictures of shopping receipts to “coupon” after they buy something than the other way around. Ibotta was born and is now the biggest consumer tech company in Denver, and the third most-used shopping app in the U.S. Ibotta was launched in Denver back in 2012 and now, with more than 400 employees, 23M downloads, nearly $100M in funding, and partnerships with Anheuser-Busch, Target, Wal-Mart and 1500 other brands. The company is focused on getting millennials to start shopping brick and mortar and help stop the wave of retailers closing physical locations. Ibotta ("I bought a...") is transforming the shopping experience by making it easy for consumers to earn cash rewards on everyday purchases through a single smartphone app. The company partners with leading brands and retailers to offer rewards on groceries, electronics, clothing, gifts, home and office supplies, restaurant dining, and more. Having worked with eBay, Drizly, Jet.com, Pumaliterally every brand, to better engage consumers with their phone and get them back into physical stores.
