On the Wednesday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by FanDuel and Edgar Snyder & Associates, host Christopher Carter welcomes Post-Gazette Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo to discuss coach Mike McCarthy's old-school ideas for tight ends Darnell Washington and Pat Freiermuth. Can a 1990s-style role within the offense work for that duo with Aaron Rodgers at QB and an improved set of pass catchers including DK Metcalf, Michael Pittman Jr., Germie Bernard, Roman Wilson and Jaylen Warren around them? And how capable is the current roster of playing that more physical style of the past? Our duo tackles those questions, then talks QBs and how pivotal this summer could be for Will Howard as he looks to prove he deserves consideration for the QB2 role next to Mason Rudolph and Drew Allar. May 27, 2026 - Season 16, Episode 141 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Wednesday morning show, Alex Kozora and I get right into discussing how excited we are to hear from several of the Pittsburgh Steelers' coaches on Wednesday afternoon as part of the team resuming their OTA practices this week. The Steelers re-signed DL Dean Lowry to a one-year contract on Tuesday, so Alex and I address that transaction and what it means for the defensive line depth chart moving forward into the offseason. On the heels of the Steelers restructuring the contract of TE Pat Freiermuth recently, Alex and I go over all the details related to that transaction. We also discuss the team's current salary cap situation as of Tuesday morning and why the team might need to restructure the contract of at least one more veteran player before the 2026 regular season gets underway. The finer details related to the four-year contract extension that K Chris Boswell recently signed have now surfaced, so with that, Alex and I address the known numbers and the impact of that deal on 2026 and future years. Recently, Steelers OG Mason McCormick was tabbed as the team's most underappreciated player by one media outlet, so we discuss if that is an accurate designation as he enters his third NFL season. Alex and I also address the possibility that McCormick could be in line for a very lucrative contract extension next offseason. How will new Steelers HC Mike McCarthy attack training camp this summer when it comes to him listening to the likes and dislikes of the veteran players under contract with the team? We dive into that question during this show. Alex and I end this show by discussing the current statis of college QB Brendan Sorsby and whether he'll ultimately be part of the annual supplemental draft. We talk about the plausibility and probability related to the Steelers possibly being interested in drafting Sorsby should he ultimately be eligible for that draft process. This 79-minute episode also discusses several other minor topics not noted in the recap above and we make sure to answer a few listener emails we have received to close out this show. steelersdepot.com Learn more about your ad choices. Steelers reporter Mike DeFabo of The Athletic joined the show. Mike doesn't think the Steelers will keep four quarterbacks. Can Patrick Graham maximize this defense? Ricco Dowdle has not been at OTAs. "I think this is going to be a great offense for Pat Freiermuth." Mike thinks Will Howard will be the backup. Nick Herbig's future is strongly in his hands and the Steelers may need to do a lot for him to stay in Pittsburgh.
Hour 2 with Joe Starkey: Steelers reporter Mike DeFabo of The Athletic joined the show. Mike doesn't think the Steelers will keep four quarterbacks. On the Wednesday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by FanDuel, host Adam Bittner welcomes Post-Gazette Steelers insider Christopher Carter to react to colleague Gerry Dulac's hints that GM Omar Khan and coach Mike McCarthy could be looking closely at Oregon TE Kenyon Sadiq on Day 1 of the NFL draft. Is tight end a big enough need to justify a first round pick with Pat Feiermuth and Darnell Washington already in the fold? Could the team have lingering doubts about Freiermuth after he was largely sidelined by departed OC Arthur Smith last year? Might there be concern about Darnell Washington re-signing past 2026? And how might later round options like Oscar Delp fit into their plans? Our duo tackles those questions, then reacts to McCarthy's latest growing comments about Will Howard. Are they purely authentic? Or is the front office using praise for Howard as a smokescreen? Could it have anything to do with Aaron Rodgers' future? Or is there a different motivation? Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
In this hour, Dorin Dickerson wonders how much of a priority finding a new TE may be for the Steelers this offseason. Also, Ray Fittipaldo from The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette comes on The Fan Hotline. And Pirates' manager Don Kelly just showed us how much he cares about the team! April 1, 2026, 8:00 Hour
Steelers legend Rocky Bleier joined the show. Rocky has given back so much over the course of his life – not only on the football field, but on the battlefield of Vietnam. He talked about giving back to the community and the people that he loves so much. Rocky said it's a lot of things that interest him, which includes giving back to military members. Rocky didn't watch any of the flag football over the weekend, but knew about the NFL team getting worked over by the team of pro flag football players. Rocky talked about the transition in Steelers football going from Mike Tomlin after nearly 20 years on the sidelines. Rocky thinks Mike McCarthy can build and win in Pittsburgh. Bill Shaner from Hampton Beer Outlet joined the show. Bill credited Donny for the weight loss and the wedding over the weekend. Bill talked about his friendship with Adam Crowley, who said he'd be jailed for 24 hours if a certain threshold got met today. Bill is so honored to be part in today's radiothon and to have a successful local business. Bill said he would be donating roughly 3000 meals to the cause today. Steelers TE Pat Freiermuth joined the show. With baseball starting tomorrow night, Pat shared that he was a diehard Red Sox fan growing up in Massachusetts, but he has pivoted to the Pirates. He said he will be at the home opener next Friday. He said basketball was his favorite sport growing up, but he gave that dream up in high school when football really took off. Chris wants to play golf with Pat at some point this summer after they couldn't set up a date last year. Pat reflected on Mike Tomlin and the process of him stepping down after nearly 2 decades as the Steelers head coach. Pat said he had a feeling of personal let down because they have been unable to get over the playoff hump and drought that has gone on for nearly 10 years. Pat said he is excited about the future with Mike McCarthy in charge. He can't say for sure if Aaron Rodgers is coming back. Pat gave a lot of props to Will Howard and him taking advantage of sitting behind Rodgers all season long while he was out with an injury. Pat is getting married later on this year back home in Boston and gave a shout out to Donny for the big wedding over the weekend. Pat shared his feelings on the importance of giving back to the community and the reason he has for being kind and friendly to everyone he has an encounter with. Pirates in-game reporter Hannah Mears from SportsNet Pittsburgh joined the show. Hannah said there is a strong optimism coming from the Pirates on the 2026 season. Hannah talked about Konnor Griffin going through the minor leagues at hyper speed and how quickly he could end up in the bigs. Who does Hannah think will have a breakout season for the Buccos?

On the Wednesday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by FanDuel and Edgar Snyder & Associates, host Adam Bittner welcomes Post-Gazette Steelers insider Christopher Carter to discuss potential winners and losers in the transition between former coach Mike Tomlin's staff to new coach Mike McCarthy's. Could Pat Freiermuth finally see an elevated role at tight end, given McCarthy's success at the position elsewhere? Will he see more targets not only relative to fellow tight ends Jonnu Smith and Darnell Washington but other receivers and backs as well? Will McCarthy find ways to use DK Metcalf more effectively? And could an interest in finding a viable No. 2 receiver like USC's Makai Lemon in the NFL draft potentially help in that pursuit? And could Jaylen Warren find better opportunities in the running game in McCarthy is able to open up the pass game more relative to former OC Arthur Smith? Our duo tackles those questions, then analyzes which names may lose prominence. Will Derrick Harmon still be seen as a key piece of the future and the heir to Cam Heyward's role along the defensive line? Or could a coaching change disrupt his development? Will Patrick Queen retain his role as the signal caller of the defense? Or could his contract price him out of that role under new DC Patrick Graham? With other linebackers like Payton Wilson and Cole Holcomb in the fold? And what is Jalen Ramsey's future in the secondary? Are the Steelers willing to pay him elite DB money for an uncertain role? Or could the new staff prefer to build around younger players like Joey Porter Jr. and invest Ramsey's big salary elsewhere? Our duo tackles those questions and more. On the Tuesday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by FanDuel, host Noah Hiles welcomes Post-Gazette Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo to analyze the impact Mike McCarthy's hiring to replace Mike Tomlin as coach could have on the offense. Could he get more from players including DK Metcalf, Pat Freiermuth, Roman Wilson, Darnell Washington, Jaylen Warren and others under contract for 2026? Was that a point of emphasis for owner Art Rooney II and GM Omar Khan in making this move? And what will that mean for the QB situation with Aaron Rodgers' future uncertain ahead of names like Mason Rudolph and Will Howard? Our duo tackles those questions, then ponder what McCarthy could be looking for in an offensive coordinator. Will it be another established name like Arthur Smith, who's now off to Ohio State? Or could he lean on a younger name from his own coaching tree? With Scott Tolzien being one notable option from that list? Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. It's a double pod week, and Cam Heyward and Hayden Walsh are getting you ready on the morning of a massive playoff matchup against the Texans. The guys are joined by Steelers standouts Pat Freiermuth and Connor Heyward. In this episode:
Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's the team's distribution of reps at tight end between Pat Freiermuth and Jonnu Smith. Freiermuth is the better blocker and somewhat surprisingly, has been the better receiver this year as well. So why does Arthur Smith insist on playing Smith so much? Alan breaks it down. How would a fight between Callas and Bechtold turn out? This is a historically mediocre version of Steelers/Ravens. The buzz has died down even from a year ago. However, this is a huge game for Tomlin. John Harbaugh is under some pressure, too. Can they ever get over the lump with Lamar Jackson? This is a massive swing for playoff odds. Do Steelers fans even want to make the playoffs? But a win will get fans excited again. Even if the Steelers lose out, they probably won't get a great draft pick. Joe really benefits from protein bars during the show. Lamar looked more healthy last week. Joe is taking the Ravens, as does Donny, albeit in a lower scoring game. Have the Steelers become the Eagles "Dream Team" in terms of disappointment? Will the Steelers attendance take a hit with another loss? Calls on the Steelers, one expecting a collapse and a Tomlin resignation. Another caller expects the Steelers to win in Baltimore. George Pickens reverted to his true self last night, but he still was probably worth keeping for one more year. "Timeliness" has been a problem for Pickens this season. We remember Antonio Brown in a hot air balloon. Ray Fittipaldo joins to discuss the struggles of both the Steelers and Ravens, if Mason is the best option currently. the outlook for Freiermuth, how much we'll see Adam Thielen, has TJ Watt lost a step, Heyward's play, the differences between the Steelers and Ravens in addressing their secondaries, free association, who has been the Steelers MVP? It's the internationally acclaimed numbers game: - 1,672, the Steelers yards differential over their past 17 games; 48 - Muth's percentage of snaps this season; 41.7 - Steelers conversion rate on 4th downs; 45 - Ben's TDs vs the Ravens; 22 - Lamar's record-season wins in December and later; 15 - Lamar's TD passes this year; 0 - Lamar Jackson has no TD passes in 3 straight starts; 1 - turnovers from Darius Slay; 5 - Lamar giveaways since week 11, the most in the NFL; 8 - receptions by Adam Thielen; 39.4 - Lamar's completion percentage on passes traveling 10 yards; 40 - the number of Steelers/Ravens games that have been one-possession contests; 39.3 - million dollars spent on Mark Andrews; 3 - since 2019, the Steelers are 3-30-1 when they lose the turnover battle. The Pirates made a trade for "the password", but Joe has a bad feeling about it. Donny seems more optimistic. This is definitely not a proven hitter. Who are some actual options for big-name hitters? Are the Pens going to be a playoff team? They've been the most entertaining team in town. Maybe the Pens should be a blueprint for the Steelers. Ron has been spotted in Pittsburgh. The Bechtold Breakdown with Sean - LeBron James 10-point streak ends, Penn State looks like it has it's next head coach. Steelers/Ravens quiz turned ugly. Donny prevailed but both guys struggled. College and NFL picks and Steelers over/unders.

Adam Crowley and Dorin Dickerson react to the response from Steelers' QB Aaron Rodgers regarding why TE Pat Freiermuth hasn't been getting many of the passes in games this season.
Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo from the PG joined the show. Ray said the final 5 games matter a lot in the future of Mike Tomlin, but it would take them losing almost all of them for Ray to put the percentage at like 30% of Tomlin being let go. What has better chances – Aaron Rodgers back at QB or Marcus Freeman as the new head coach? Ray isn't sure how much we see of Adam Thielen on Sunday, but doesn't think it would take all that much juggling. Ray said Roman Wilson and Ben Skowronek would see less playing time if Thielen cracks the lineup. Ray is one of the many that are curious as to why Jonnu Smith still gets more snaps than Pat Freiermuth. Poni asked Ray about the failed attempts of building the receiving corps in the last few seasons. Ray gave a little look at the injury report as of today. How bad of a signing was Darius Slay? Ray thinks it is simple for Will Howard seeing game action this season – injuries to both Rodgers and Mason Rudolph. The only caveat could be the team completely falling out of the playoff picture. Ray can't bring himself to picking the Steelers on Sunday.
On the Wednesday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by FanDuel and Edgar Snyder & Associates, host Adam Bittner welcomes Post-Gazette Steelers insider Christopher Carter to analyze T.J. Watt's recent play ahead of an NFL Week 14 matchup with the AFC North rival Baltimore Ravens. Is Watt's play as bad as his critics seem to think? Or has he been better than he's given credit for with sky-high expectations? Are his most dominant days behind him? Or is he reliant on teammates including Alex Highsmith, Nick Herbig, Cam Heyward, Keeanu Benton and Derrick Harmon around him to find room to make plays? And what does the Steelers defense need from him to reach the NFL playoffs? Our duo ponders those questions plus OC Arthur Smith's tight end usage. Why has Pat Freiermuth's role been so diminished? Is Jonnu Smith getting more playing time for valid reasons? Or is he just Smith's personal favorite? Why should the pass catching pecking order be behind DK Metcalf for names like Freiermuth, Smith, Calvin Austin III, Roman Wilson and Darnell Washington? And to what extent have the TEs failed to live up to preseason expectations? Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
The Penn State coaching search is a disaster. Where does Penn State go? Brian Hartline goes to USF and Kalani Sitake is staying at BYU. WPIAL legend Matt Sieg was going to pick between Pitt and Virginia Tech, but committed to West Virginia. Pat Freiermuth is frustrated with his lack of snaps and lack of targets.
Hour 4 with Bob Pompeani: The Penn State coaching search is a disaster. Where does Penn State go? WPIAL legend Matt Sieg was going to pick between Pitt and Virginia Tech, but committed to West Virginia! Pat Freiermuth is frustrated with his lack of snaps and lack of targets. There is a real chance that Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, and Joe Burrow could all miss the playoffs. The Penguins should trade Tristan Jarry to play Sergei Murashov and Arturs Silovs.

Ben Roethlisberger wanted Pat Freiermuth to go down and burn the clock instead of scoring a long touchdown. The Steelers defense couldn't stop anyone. They needed a touchdown and it's hard to take that chance. Ben was critical of the Steelers defense, and specifically the secondary. Ben doesn't think the Steelers need another receiver.
Hour 3 with Bob Pompeani and Joe Starkey: Ben Roethlisberger wanted Pat Freiermuth to go down and burn the clock instead of scoring a long touchdown. Ben was critical of the Steelers defense, especially the secondary. Mullsy the Snowman may have won us a Marconi. Will Howard returned to practice. Jeremy Fowler says the people inside the Steelers organization would entertain bringing Aaron Rodgers back next season.
On the Tuesday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by FanDuel, host Noah Hiles welcomes Post-Gazette Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo to talk about Aaron Rodgers as he prepares to face his former team this week. Is the veteran QB ready for the challenge of taking down the Green Bay Packers in NFL Week 8 at Acrisure Stadium? What will he have to say about his first game as a Packers opponent? Will his comments be similar or different than they were in the lead-up to the NFL Week 1 matchup with the New York Jets, who cut him this offseason? And how will others including coach Mike Tomlin and players like DK Metcalf, T.J. Watt, Cam Heyward, Jalen Ramsey and Patrick Queen approach the situation? Our duo tackles those questions, then tight end usage within OC Arthur Smith's offense. How can names like Pat Freiermuth, Jonnu Smith and Darnell Washington repeat their NFL Week 7 success against the Cincinnati Bengals? And can Rodgers continue to get the ball to Freiermuth in particular for big numbers in the absence of serious WR2 options behind DK Metcalf? Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Post-Gazette Steelers insiders Gerry Dulac and Ray Fittipaldo report from the Steelers facility after Tuesday's practice leading up to the team's "Sunday Night Football" matchup with the Green Bay Packers. Can we expect reinforcements at wide receiver, with Calvin Austin III set to return after missing the last two games with a shoulder injury? How does that affect coordinator Arthur Smith's offensive game plan? Is Pat Freiermuth back to producing at a high level along with fellow tight ends Jonnu Smith, Darnell Washington and Connor Heyward? How is Aaron Rodgers continuing to play at such a high level at 41 years old? Can we expect the offense to keep humming with Jaylen Warren and DK Metcalf? And what adjustments can coordinator Teryl Austin make to get the defense led by T.J. Watt and Cam Heyward back on track? Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
Nick thinks there isn't a concrete plan for Pat Freiermuth. There is more of a plan for Jonnu Smith and Darnell Washington. Nick doesn't think there's tension between Freiermuth and Aaron Rodgers, but there's not much of a connection. Mike Tomlin took a shot at Andrew Berry in Cleveland for trading Joe Flacco to the Bengals.
Hour 2 with Bob Pompeani and Joe Starkey: Nick thinks there isn't a concrete plan for Pat Freiermuth. There is more of a plan for Jonnu Smith and Darnell Washington. Mike Tomlin took a shot at Andrew Berry in Cleveland for trading Joe Flacco to the Bengals. Top quarterback prospects in 2026 NFL Draft. Penn State fired James Franklin and Front Office Sports has learned that if Franklin gets a new job, the money can offset from what they owe him.
Hour 4 with Bob Pompeani and Joe Starkey: Mike Tomlin called out Browns general manager Andrew Berry for trading Joe Flacco. Tomlin said Berry must be smarter than them in Pittsburgh. Kevin Stefanski admitted he had no idea Flacco was being traded. Bob thinks Tomlin might be trying to stick up for Stefanski. It's strange and people wonder if this means the Browns will be worse than Cincinnati. The Steelers field was poor at Acrisure Sunday.
Mike Tomlin called out Browns general manager Andrew Berry for trading Joe Flacco. Tomlin said Berry must be smarter than them in Pittsburgh. Bob thinks Tomlin might be trying to stick up for Kevin Stefanski. Tomlin disagrees with Will Graves that the environment hasn't been great for receivers looking to be more involved in the offense.
Tomlin took a shot at Brian's question! What do you do with Pat Freiermuth? Tomlin isn't concerned and said Freiermuth's time will come. Darnell Washington has improved as a pass catcher. The first play of the game was stunning!
Hour 3 with Joe Starkey: The Mike Tomlin Press Conference. Mike Tomlin's thoughts before the Steelers play the Bengals on a short week on Thursday Night Football. What do you do with Pat Freiermuth? Tomlin isn't concerned and said Freiermuth's time will come. Darnell Washington has improved as a pass catcher.
Pat Freiermuth is becoming less involved in the pass game. Darnell Washington has been a good blocker but taken away Freiermuth's snap counts. The Steelers ran the tush with Connor Heyward and worked pretty well. Jalen Ramsey brings a toughness to the defense and an attitude they need.
On the Wednesday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by FanDuel and Edgar Snyder & Associates, Post-Gazette Steelers insiders Christopher Carter and Brian Batko ponder Pat Freiermuth's lack of usage early this season. Is his lack of presence in the passing game a problem for OC Arthur Smith and QB Aaron Rodgers? Has it simply made more sense to get the ball to other targets including DK Metcalf, Calvin Austin III, Jonnu Smith and Darnell Washington? And how much could his role in the offense change depending upon who the Steelers are playing in a given week? Do the Cleveland Browns in NFL Week 6 present a better matchup? Our duo tackles those questions, plus a flurry of AFC North trades this week, including Joe Flacco to the Bengals and Alohi Gilman to the Ravens in exchange for Odafe Oweh. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
Aaron Rodgers is our Steelers MVP so far. The Steelers LVP for Joe is Freiermuth. Freiermuth only played 15 snaps against the Vikings, but Bob thinks he will play more. Bob's pick is Roman Wilson. Joe is interested to watch Keeanu Benton.
