When Testament finished touring behind their debut album The Legacy, they had zero songs written for a follow-up. The label didn't care—they demanded another record immediately. Scrambling to fulfill their contract's 40-minute minimum, the Bay Area thrash band wrote The New Order in the studio, added an Aerosmith cover, tossed in some classical-influenced instrumentals, and somehow delivered one of 1988's most essential thrash metal albums. In this episode of Dig Me Out 80s Metal, hosts Jason Ziak, Tim Minneci, and Chip Midnight explore how Testament turned deadline panic into precision thrash. They break down Alex Skolnick's astonishing guitar work (recorded when he was just 19 years old), Chuck Billy's evolving vocal style, the power grooves that made Testament stand apart from their thrash peers, and why this album should've earned them a spot in the “Big Five” of thrash metal alongside Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax. If you love Metallica, Anthrax, Overkill, or Bay Area thrash metal, this episode unpacks why The New Order remains a thrash clinic 37 years later.Episode Highlights:0:00 – Introduction to 80s Metal poll results and Testament's victory over Motörhead, Anthrax, and Blackfoot1:03 – Band history: Testament's origins as Legacy, their Bay Area roots, and the contract crisis that shaped The New Order3:47 – What works: Alex Skolnick's classical-influenced precision playing at age 19, the power grooves, and the locked-in rhythm section8:12 – “Into the Pit” – Why Testament's most-played live song became a thrash anthem (even though it's not about moshing)12:20 – “Disciples of the Watch” – Breaking down one of the album's heaviest tracks and Skolnick's sweeping guitar mastery15:04 – The Aerosmith cover: How “Nobody's Fault” became an unexpected highlight and showcased Testament's versatility18:29 – The instrumentals: “Hypnosis” and “The Dirge” as atmospheric breathers that elevate the album's pacing21:44 – “Trial by Fire” – The single that featured on MTV's Headbangers Ball and showcased Testament's unique arrangements24:03 – What doesn't work: Chuck Billy's Metallica-influenced vocals and missed melodic opportunities29:59 – Original vs. remastered versions: Why the remaster brings the bass and drums forward for a fuller sound34:47 – Worthy Album ratings across the board and why this is Testament's quintessential record40:05 – Testament's evolution from The New Order to their heavier modern sound on 2025's ParabellumSubscribe to Dig Me Out for weekly deep dives into 70s rock, 80s metal, 90s alternative, and 2000s rock. My guest for Episode #325 of the My Favorite Mistake podcast is Phillip Cantrell, EVP of Strategy at United Real Estate, founder of Benchmark Realty, and author of Failing My Way to Success: Lessons from 42 Years of Winning and Losing in Business. EPISODE PAGE WITH VIDEO, TRANSCRIPT, AND MORE Phillip reflects on more than four decades of entrepreneurial ups and downs across printing, real estate, and related ventures. He openly shares how devastating mistakes—including putting “all his eggs in one basket”—forced him to reinvent his approach. What looked like a catastrophe in 2007–2008 became the turning point that fueled Benchmark Realty's rapid growth to nearly 2,000 agents. “Failure is going to happen. If you don't make mistakes, you're not doing anything.” In this conversation, Phillip and I talk about the difference between scaling vs. scrambling, the dangers of playing “not to lose” instead of “playing to win,” and why documenting processes is essential for growth. He also explains why your only real competitor is “the man in the mirror” and how daily reflection helps him learn from mistakes and avoid repeating them. This episode is packed with timeless lessons on leadership, resilience, and learning from failure—whether you're in real estate or any other industry. “If you play not to lose in business, you're already losing.” Questions and Topics: What's your “favorite mistake” from your career? How did putting “all your eggs in one basket” impact Benchmark Realty? What did you learn from losing agents and clients during the mortgage crisis? How did you develop the flat-fee brokerage model, and what risks did you see at the time? Did you ever doubt whether that new model would work? How did you rebuild Benchmark from five agents to nearly 2,000? Why is it important to look outside your own industry for best practices? What do you mean by the difference between scaling and scrambling? How does documenting processes create better outcomes? Why do you say your only real competitor is “the man in the mirror”? What role has reflection and journaling played in your leadership growth? What advice would you give younger entrepreneurs about learning from mistakes?

Leah Marx has a cell phone smuggled to inmate-informant Anthony Brown, part of the FBI's increasingly ambitious scheme to catch dirty jailers. Jailers quickly discover the phone, however, and trace it to the FBI. Scrambling to hide Brown from the feds, the department enlists Sexton, who helps change Brown's name in the computer system and dubs the plan Operation Pandora's Box. For 18 days, from August-Sept. 2011, Marx struggles to find her informant. The effort to erase Anthony Brown from jail records showed how far leaders would go to shield themselves. A young deputy became central to the cover-up, and what began as a contraband phone case quickly spiraled into an obstruction probe. Reporter Chris Goffard, who previously told the story of Dirty John, guides listeners through this extraordinary clash between the Sheriff's Department and the FBI.

Today's word of the day is ‘apron' as in luxury tax as in salary cap as in penalties as in the NBA as in MLB. What are we talking about!? The Boston Celtics have been blowing it all up… kinda. Jrue Holiday is gone. Kristaps Porzingis is gone. Hundreds of millions have been saved in penalties. (17:40) The NBA Draft is here! The first round is on Wednesday. Second round on Thursday. Cooper Flagg is an easy number one. Then things get interesting! The Brooklyn Nets have the most first round picks ever! (24:30) Aaron Rodgers says he's only there for one year. That's it. Then he will disappear. (34:30) Review: Dean Spanley. (39:30) NPPOD. Everyone needs to watch the Pirates and Brewers game today. Trust me! (43:15) The Arizona Diamondbacks are getting $500 million from the state. Yup, remember public financing was over. Ha! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The National Endowment for the Arts has withdrawn more than half a million dollars worth of grants that arts organizations all over Oregon were relying on. Portland Playhouse got a letter that said it would not get $25,000 meant for its production of August Wilson’s and Joe Turner’s "Come and Gone" that was to open the next day. Other organizations that saw their funding pulled include All Classical Portland, Oregon Children’s Theatre, NW Children’s Theatre, Passinart: A Theatre Company, and Profile Theatre. Portland Playhouse donors quickly made up the theatre’s lost $25,000 grant, but future federal funding is looking bleak to many Oregon arts organizations. Many of them met this week with Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, who vowed to do everything in her power to get federal funding restored. Claire Willett is a Portland-based playwright, artist and grant writer. She’s been following the NEA funding cuts for Oregon Arts Watch and joins us to share the latest developments.
